Whether self-published or under a larger company, these developers suffered their share of outside meddling.

Whether you’re a small studio making ends meet or a huge triple A developer, game development is tough. The process is rife with creative decisions, technical issues, and general turmoil. So of course, it doesn’t help when a publisher – who helps bankroll a project and markets it – utterly mucks about with development. Let’s take a look at 13 games that suffered from publisher interference, both allegedly and obviously.

Dragon Age 2

Don’t you just love it when a publisher wants a sequel for your game? Especially with just 14 to 16 months for development? Such was the fate that befell Dragon Age 2 thanks to Electronic Arts and as a result, BioWare ended up cutting a lot of story content and scaling back on the locations (besides crunching continuously). Granted, the sequel would find some appreciation, especially for what it offered in its short development cycle, but such haphazard development wasn’t needed.

Worst company in America was quite apt for Electronic Arts.

You really don’t get voted into the worst company of America, twice, for no reason. Whether you enjoy their games despite the publisher behind them or not, it’s taken more and more mental gymnastics over the years to really understand the logic behind some of the most horrible things Electronic Arts has ever done to the industry itself.

Mass Effect Andromeda Blunder

When you have what is easily the most well known, respected and loved sci-fi series of the last generation under your belt and need to take it into the next generation, you should probably do all you can to make sure that the series is continued in a way that respects that legacy, right? While the story of what went so terribly, terribly wrong with Mass Effect Andromeda is a long one of ambition, mismanagement, politics and tech within Bioware, it was ultimately Electronic Arts who pushed the game out the door anyways, and then shelved the series indeterminately while splitting up the development team in the process.

Mobile version designed to cater to "typical mobile play patterns".

Dungeon Keeper recently released for iOS and Android, and has been getting skewered by the press and gamers alike for its transaction model. The game places heavy time limits on the most basic of tasks, which can be sped up by spending gems. Of course, the gems require real money to purchase and the game constantly reminds you to purchase them in order to speed up the proceedings.

EA Mythic’s Jeff Skalski addressed these concerns to TabTimes, stating that, “It’s important to emphasize that we designed a game that is built around the typical mobile play patterns. This means Dungeon Keeper is meant to be played on the go multiple times a day with a few minutes here or there. This way of playing allows fans to naturally progress as a free player.

“That’s not to say you can’t quickly blow past 30 minutes in one sitting by summoning new minions, reorganizing your dungeon layout, find a keeper to attack, check in with your guild, queue up your next digs then take on a new event raid before calling it a night.”

The game seems to have a fairly decent average on both the Play Store and App Store, although there are tons of negative reviews overall. Stay tuned to see how quickly EA back-peddles from this practice, if they do at all.
