Highly anticipated sequels, titles with long development times, interesting games that fell flat - 2022 is rife with disappointment.

With all the delays to 2023 and titles that remain without release dates, this year has still been great for video games. Classics like Horizon Forbidden West dominated headlines but even smaller titles like Tunic, NORCO and Citizen Sleeper have been exceptional experiences. But for every game that showed promise, there have been several disappointments thus far. Let’s take a look at 15 such titles here.

Diablo Immortal

The day it was announced, nearly everyone expected Diablo Immortal to be a pay-to-win shitshow. The final product somehow exceeded their wildest expectations with a battle pass, premium battle pass, empowered battle pass, materials, bundles, cosmetics – anything and everything was for sale. Let’s not even get into entire endgame mechanics – like Awakening – only accessible by spending money. The real tragedy is that even if that was all stripped away, you’re left with a middling, dumbed-down clone of Diablo 3 with a terrible UI and loot.

Castle sieges are available to try out along with the Edit Mode for creating custom Officers. The latter can also be transferred into the full game.

After launching for Japan in November 2021, Koei Tecmo has released the demo for Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires in North America and Europe. It’s playable on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch (sorry, PC players).

The demo offers the chance to experience the improved castle sieges, both the invasion aspect and defending from invaders. Edit Mode is also available, allowing one to create their own officers for battle. These can then be transferred into the full game on release, for those playing the demo on the same platform.

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires releases on February 15th for the West. Unlike the open world approach of Dynasty Warriors 9, it returns to a more traditional layout of stages while still focusing on the strategic thinking of the Empires series. In addition to Edit Mode, there are more than 700 Generic Officers to command and 94 Musou Officers. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

The demo will come to consoles, though not PC, and will allow you to transfer some data to the main game.

It’s almost hard to believe, but it’s been nearly 4 years now since a new Dynasty Warriors game has hit the scene. The series was once one of the most steady releases from Koei Tecmo, but after Dynasty Warriors 9 tried some new things that didn’t quite hit, it went somewhat dormant. That will change with Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires, a reworked version of that game. While the game was once planned for this year, it was hit with the delay bug awhile back. However, you should be able to try it out relatively soon.

The publisher announced today that a demo would be coming. It will feature playable scenarios based around the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Battle of Red Cliffs, two well known events in the ever retold narrative. Unfortunately, no date was given for when to expect the demo, but considering how the game is set to launch in just a few months, it should be fairly soon. You will also be able to transfer character customization data from the demo to the main game, which you can see a little of through here. It’s worth note that so far only a Japanese demo has been announced, with no mention of when a western-based version would come.

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is set to release February 15th 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC. The demo has been announced for all those platforms with the exception of PC. We’ll keep you updated for when more specifics are released.

Army Affinity, Secret Plans and much more can be expected on top of all the usual intrigue, strategy and castle sieges.

Koei Tecmo has announced that Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires will be coming to players in North America on February 15th, 2022. It will be available for PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5. Check out the latest trailer below which showcases the various mechanics that can be expected.

One of these is “Secret Plans” which activates during missions and which can succeed or fail depending on certain conditions. On success, allies will receive buffs but beware – enemies can also use Secret Plans and foiling them provides a strong advantage. There’s also Army Affinity with an officer’s unit now having a military unit type as a characteristic.

These types include Infantry (which are better at attacking siege weapons), Archer (can perform simultaneous attacks) and Cavalry (deals more damage to enemy HQ). Each has weaknesses and strengths against the others, and having the advantage means dealing more and taking less damage. Stay tuned for more details en route to the game’s release.

Koei Tecmo says it will announce a new launch window "in future updates."

Omega Force’s Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires has seen a delay. Originally slated to release in early 2021, Koei Tecmo has delayed it to an unknown date. In a recent statement, the publisher said that the development team is “working hard on delivering the best game possible” and that it will “announce the new launch window in future updates.”

It also released an image from a scene in the opening movie, which you can see in the tweet below. As an expansion to the open world Dynasty Warriors 9, which garnered mixed reviews from fans and critics, Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires returns to more traditional, smaller stages. Along with an enhanced character creator, it also expands the domestic system and character relationships.

Fans of the Empires series can expect the Ways of Life to return and there will also be several different positions to start with, from ruler to a wandering officer. Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is currently in development for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

This year’s Tokyo Game Show came to a close after a new digital format, one that seemed to be pretty successful, and as usual it was filled with lots of titles from lots of publishers. We’re also close to a new generation of consoles launching, so there’s so much to pay attention to. After the show, Japanese players were polled as to what their most wanted games were after TGS ended and, while most were what you expect, a few surprises slipped in.

The polling was done via major Japanese gaming media Famitsu, Dengeki, 4Gamer, and V Jump. It was to determine what games that had released on September 24th or later the public was most excited for. While it’s no surprise that Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise was at the top of the list, it is a bit of a shock that it was not number 1. That spot ended up going to Genshin Impact, the recently released free to play action title. Capcom, however, really was the MVP on the 15 game list having three other titles beside Rise on there: Resident Evil Village, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition and Monster Hunter Stories 2.

The rest of the list was somewhat predictable, including Final Fantasy 16, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, NeiR Replicant and Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires. Cyberpunk 2077 also managed to just make the list at 13, the sole western title. Mobile had a pretty strong presence, too, as a few slots were taken by mobile-only titles such as Sakura Revolution and Project Sekai Colorful Stage! both from Sega.

Thanks to Siliconera for translating and compiling the list. You can see it, as well as the platforms for each title, in full below.

Genshin Impact (PC, PS4, iOS, Android; also coming later to Switch and PS5)

Monster Hunter Rise (Switch)

Get a look at the upcoming musou update.

At this year’s Tokyo Game Show, we got the announcement of the newest game in the long running musou series, Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires. While a new game in the franchise is nothing shocking, some were surprised since it seemed as if Koei Tecmo was done with the experimental entry in the series that did not go over well. But Empires is changing things up, it looks like, and we got some new screens.

The Empires expansions to the series has often combined the musou action with the more methodical strategy of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms titles, of which Dynasty Warrior spawned from. It seems this game will be slightly different as it will change up a lot from the base Dynasty Warriors 9, including scaling back its open world nature. In this entry, you’ll also be able to create a character, which the screenshots mostly focus on. It seems to be very familiar to the character creator in Nioh 2, Team Ninja’s most recent RPG release. There’s a screen of some characters gathered in a meeting and one from the frantic action.

Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires is set to release sometime in 2021 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.

Partake in diplomacy and Siege Battles alike for current and next-gen platforms.

Koei Tecmo has revealed that Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires is in the works and will be releasing in early 2021. Along with PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo and PC, it’s also slated for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Check out the trailer below for a little of the game.

Unlike the problematic open world approach that Dynasty Warriors 9 took, Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires is more like its strategy-heavy predecessors. You can still partake in 1 vs. 1000 battles against several mobs and Siege Battles are available to assault specific points. The Edit Function has also been “further evolved” though more details are needed on that.

Otherwise, you can expect to hire different officers, build relationships, manage economic, sovereign and shogun functions, and much more. Customizing one’s own officer is also possible thanks to various parts that can be changed around. We’re still keen on how the game actually plays so stay tuned for more information in the coming months.
