It is not a downgrade.

When Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was shown off at the PlayStation Experience keynote, a lot of people were obviously pretty excited, but there was also some dissatisfaction about what was perceived to be a difference between what the E3 debut trailer of Uncharted 4 last July, and what we finally got this week (in common parlance, a downgrade).

Now, Uncharted 4’s 3D Environment Artist Anthony Vaccaro has come out to discuss the differences between the E3 build of the game and the PlayStation Experience one. “Here are just a couple of things about those comparison shots.

1.Time of day is different in both. – Our first trailer is at night, moonlight. Our gameplay demo is early morning. So the moonlight is slightly over exaggerated to give more contrast to give it that night feeling but enough light so you can see whats going on. Dawn is not a time of day where you have a lot of contrast.

2. His face is so spec-y [editor’s note: specular] in the first image! – Have you seen the trailer? He literally just gets up out of water so his face/chest/shirt are wet and have a high sheen. Bottom one he is not wet so of course he looks dry.

3. Trailers are Art Directed for every frame – A trailer is not gameplay so we have the ability to do a lot of art direction in that shot, that could otherwise hamper gameplay. It allows us to give a lot more emotion to a trailer.”

I mean, that sounds reasonable. Plus, come on guys, this is Naughty Dog. If anyone has earned the benefit of the doubt, it’s these guys!

Nintendo seems to be in the process of building itself a solid lineup for the Wii U this holiday season- Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2 will be available for their console for the all lucrative holiday season, we knew that, and earlier today, they confirmed that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U would be launching November 21 as well. Now, they have confirmed that Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, the puzzle platformer game that they first revealed this E3, will be launching for the Wii U on December 5 in North America.

Unlike most other retail games, Captain Toad will launch for just $40, which makes it an attractive proposition for families looking to get their kids a big game for Christmas as a present; it will also support some Amiibos (Nintendo’s NFC enabled toys) some time in 2015, although it is not yet clear which ones exactly it will support.

The release date for Europe or Japan has not yet been announced, and in Europe at least, Nintendo has delayed the game into early 2015.

That the Wii U has so far struggled on the market, in spite of a great lineup of varied exclusive games, is no secret. However, this past E3, Nintendo went all out, with an all new format and such a refreshing emphasis on only that which matters- loads of games, with real time actual gameplay footage and no pre-baked CG.

Certainly, that, coupled with the release of Mario Kart 8, seems to have breathed new life into the Wii U, which has seen its sales surge around the world in the last month or so- and now, a new research conducted by GamesIndustry.biz and IHS shows that consumer interest in Wii U did in fact shoot up following their E3- in fact, nearly 150% more people plan on buying a Wii U now than they did before the Digital Event.

The survey was across all three next gen consoles, and the results for the other two aren’t quite as dramatic. There was a very modest rise in the number of people who want to purchase an Xbox One following Microsoft’s E3; amusingly enough, the number of people who want to buy a PS4 dropped in the wake of E3, though again, the number was negligibly small.

It is also worth noting that as many people are now interested in the Wii U as Xbox One- the battle for second place this generation may be harder fought that we originally thought.

No Man’s Sky, the incredible procedurally generated indie game that sets players off into the expanse of space, letting them explore it all for themselves, is an incredible indie game that Sony highlighted at their E3 conference last month, and which has since garnered incredible hype.

However, that hype is not necessarily always the best thing, believes the co-founder of Hello Games, the studio that is developing the title.

“I think that we strayed into this area that is not just excitement, but kind of like hype, and hype is your worst enemy as a developer, because it’s that thing that’s really impossible to deliver against. It’s great that people have that excitement, but all it makes me want to do is actually go quiet and go and make the game,” Sean Murray said to Gamespot.

“I think it is just pressure, you know? But I think the way we work we’re happy with. I’ll give you an example. Every other developer I meet keeps saying ‘oh, how many is Hello Games now post-E3, it must be, like, 50 people? You must be hiring like crazy!’ But that’s not our attitude at all.

“We definitely don’t want it to affect us. And I think it would be this ludicrous mistake as well. You could almost write it out that Hello Games would come back from E3, hire loads of people, go crazy, and never be seen again. But it’s also quite nice that we have enough interest, because it allows us to just focus on making the game,” Murray said.

Well, it’s great to see that is keeping a level head, but his game looks dope, and the hype so far is completely warranted. Hopefully, with him not getting carried away, the final product lives up to all the excitement and enthusiasm.

Electronic Arts and Bioware showcased a demo for Dragon Age: Inquisition behind closed doors at E3 2014 and has now revealed part two of said walkthrough to the world with creative director Mike Laidlaw’s input. There are plenty of things going on in the demo including a rescue mission and the confrontation of a “dangerous adversary” of sorts. Check it out above.

Dragon Age: Inquisition features both old and new cast members, teaming up with you – the High Inquisitor – as you confront the forces of darkness led by Morrigan the witch from Dragon Age: Origins. You’ll travel to far off lands and explore the largest Dragon Age world ever created by Bioware to recruit armies to your cause, even assaulting a few forts in the process.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be out this October for PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Stay tuned for more information in the coming months and let us know what you think of the gameplay in the comments.

Like seriously, this game is shaping up to be great.

2K Australia and Gearbox Software teamed up to showcase some new footage from the upcoming Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, set between the events of the first and second game with a whole new cast of characters on Pandora’s moon. We get an extended look at some of the mechanics in the game including the ground pound, elemental abilities, and much more.

We also get a look at how Wilhelm’s abilities work out, especially when it comes to his drones Wolf and Saint. While Wolf functions as an attacking drone, Saints will work to support Wilhelm. Of course, Wilhelm can also be upgraded to do more damage and use his own embedded technology which includes the Vengeance Laser for murdering peeps while taking damage.

That’s only the tip of the iceberg for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel which is due out this October for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Shuhei Yoshida says the coverage of TV show Powers could have been made shorter.

President of SCE Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida recently talked to Gamereactor after the Gamelab conference held recently and talked about some of the positive feedback from Sony’s E3 2014 media briefing. It wasn’t all positive though – many criticized the conference for spending way too much time talking about TV shows like Powers and devices like PlayStation TV.

Yoshida agreed that, “We spent too much time talking about Powers. So we could have made [that] a bit shorter. So that was a mistake.”

Well, at least responsibility was taken on something and hopefully it won’t happen again.

Overall though, the rest of the conference was fairly good with reveals for Entwined, Bloodborne, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Dead Island 2 and much more. It’s hard to deny that it felt slightly inferior to Microsoft especially with all the games being shown one after another. Which media briefing did you enjoy more? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Ubisoft has found itself in the midst of a storm regarding female characters (or the lack thereof) in all of its video games recently, and they haven’t exactly handled it all that well. Now, this latest statement by them, which was made in an entirely different context, will probably make things much, much, much worse for them on that front.

“I know some people asked about the hostage in the demo. I mean, when we did that design we felt a lot of empathy with the hostage,” technical artist Oliver Couture told Rock Paper Shotgun. “We wanted people to want to protect her. If the hostage gets killed a team loses the game, so we wanted players to care about the hostage so that’s the design we chose.”

Wow, Ubisoft, just… wow. You couldn’t get any more patriarchally condescending even if you tried, could you? At least their next statement makes it a teensy bit better. Just a little bit, but still.

“But we’re also gonna have male hostages. That’s part of the plan,” he confirmed.

A paltry bit of the plethora of fun that was beheld at E3 2014.

Another great convention was underway and it had its horde of excitement and disappointment, amongst which we found ourselves witnessing all sundry sorts of games ranging from the jaw dropping ones to the most ridiculous ones and some even that make you ask ‘why?’.

In that plethora of games did we find the ones that really appealed to us in different respects, both good and bad, and occasionally the hilarious. Here’s a small little list of what the E3 had in store for us this time, more awesome than anything else.

The list is in no specific order.

15. Battlecry

Battlecry is a game is that has been in the line for some time and it it’s a quirky but interesting game. Ample amount of blood and gore add to the visceral beauty of the game, making this action packed fast paced multiplayer action combat game a treat to behold.

With a world with a ban on gunpowder, the melee combat seems highly polished and the game has a nice and gritty gameplay.

"In order to build that trailer, all the systems that we've been talking about have to exist otherwise it would be nothing."

No Man’s Sky is a game that by all rights should not exist- it’s a game of staggering scope and ambition, and it’s being made by a four man team. It’s the kind of game that not even full fledged AAA developers have the gall to tackle, so the fact that it exists, and looks so amazing, and is being developed by four guys, naturally makes people sit up and take notice. It also makes people wonder if there is a catch.

But there isn’t- in an interview with Kotaku, game creators Sean Murray and David Ream discussed their title, and its development.

“The [E3] trailer, that’s real-time,” Ream said. “In order for that trailer to exist as it is we captured from real time. Everything in the game, that is the game functioning. In order to build that trailer, all the systems that we’ve been talking about have to exist otherwise it would be nothing. From the outside you go, ‘Wow, how can that be true?’ From the inside, in order to show anything it has to be true.”

“We did build prototypes,” Murray said. “We built prototypes for those creatures. On the fly I can change all those dinosaurs to be completely different. We come out and people say, ‘How can it be real?’ and it’s just a really weird question to be answering.”

No Man’s Sky looks amazing, and it will be made available on the PS4 and PC. Stay tuned for more coverage.
