Supercharge your pro early in NHL 26 with this guide to quickly unlocking all of the 28 X-Factors available in the game.

X-Factors are special abilities for your pro in NHL 26, that let you step up your game in ways that mere Traits cannot. With one X-Factor and slot available to you at the start, you will have some work to do, in order to unlock additional X-Factors for use in the remaining two slots.

This NHL 26 guide will detail everything you can do to unlock more X-Factors for your pro.

Be A Pro Conversation Response

The Trait: Confidence response plays a critical role in future dialogue options, as it gives you extra points towards unlocking both X-Factors, as well as Traits.

Interview Question Responses

In subsequent interviews, always select the Confident response option. The first question will grant you +2 Trait Points, and the second will gain you +2 X-Factor Points.

Activities

As each day advances, expend energy towards X-Factor Training via the Activities menu. This will slowly earn you the additional X-Factor Points you will need to unlock the remaining X-Factors. Once you have exhausted all of your Energy for the day, switch to the Health sub-menu, and spend as much of your pro’s Health as you can afford in exchange for additional Energy, up to the point he becomes Exhausted.

Carefully Advance Day through the week until the next Energy replenishment, then rinse and repeat. Before you know it, you will have all the X-Factor Points you could possibly need to unlock the X-Factors you really want.

Those are all the ways to maximize your pro’s potential in order to unlock all 28 X-Factors in NHL 26.

A revitalized Be A Pro mode and enhanced presentation elements do wonders for this year's hockey game.

I didn’t go in expecting much out of another annual NHL game. The series has been stuck in a rut for nigh on a decade now, doing small tweaks here and there without significant overhauls. Last year saw a drastic upgrade in AI and graphics, but the modes were severely outdated. Imagine my surprise when they shined up Be A Pro mode for NHL 26. And, plot twist, it’s actually good. This year’s NHL game is a notable step up, but let’s start by looking at the on-ice gameplay.

A good slice of the on-ice gameplay improvements are difficult to explain. Everything just feels better than last year—more fluid and meaningful, but not by a significant amount. Much of this can probably be traced to all the NHL EDGE data being used. The real-life NHL has been utilizing EDGE data to track tendencies and hard-to-pin statistics for many years. EA decided they wanted some of that for their own game, and the results are a more nuanced AI system. The nuance is subtle, but it’s certainly there. I could go over every detail EDGE tracks in the game, but suffice it to say it covers two key areas in the rink: puck movement and player tendencies.

"Gameplay feels more authentic thanks to real-life NHL EDGE data."

In gameplay terms, it translates to players controlling ever so slightly differently from one another—and not just due to stats. Those imperceptible qualities can now be measured. In particular, contextual habits like suddenly being quicker when near the net or being more accurate with sneaky corner shots. You know, things that fall between the cracks of the actual stats. If you’re a casual player, you’ll hardly notice these little player quirks, but after dozens of hours with the game, it adds longevity and freshness when things would otherwise begin feeling stale and overly familiar. NHL fans are sure to enjoy the more data-driven player ratings this time around in general, even if the goalie ratings seem rather low across the board.

But hey, that’s hardly something to get worked up about considering the goalie overhaul that’s been made to this year’s title. The most noticeable change for me as I put on the pads and stood in front of the net was the ability to animation-cancel. You can make split-second saves and not have to watch the animations play out before engaging in another butterfly. Oh, and there’s a reported 80 or so new goalie animations from last year too. Goalies are much more adaptable and fluid, and that’s a great thing in terms of both the AI and player-controlled goaltenders.

"The goalie overhaul has rendered them much more adaptable and perceptive."

However, I do have a slight misgiving with the new goalie system: it’s far too automated. You can stand there as the goalie without your hand on the controller and he’ll automatically make a glove save or move his pad in front of a stray puck. Yes, the improved goalie AI is good, especially with preemptive anticipation, but it also takes agency away from the player when controlling them. I still had to position myself near the puck to avoid the stray goal, sure, but the AI is just too smart with its movements to make goaltending a satisfying position to main. Alas, goalies remain the most simplistic position to control, even with this year’s revamp.

On the other hand, Be A Pro mode has gone through some genuinely great updates. Press conferences and interviews are voice-acted, and for the first time in many years, they sound rather convincing in their delivery. It’s shocking to say that about a modern EA Sports game, but it’s true. Interviewers sound realistic and natural, pausing and hesitating as if they’re nervous or just thinking through a question. Although the player character and coaches aren’t voiced, this effort to enliven the media and press aspect of the game is admirable.

"Press conferences and interviews are voice-acted with convincing delivery"

Dialogue choices during these moments aren’t as meaningful as most role-playing games or anything, but it finally matches EA’s other sports games at the very least. Besides just influencing certain game-day tendencies, your answers have a small effect on your social media presence or locker-room dynamic. Most of the time, the outcome is telegraphed next to your answer options, but not always. I like the new abilities tied specifically to dialogue too. Simple as they are, they make it feel like you’re leveling up charisma or persuasion, providing something other than traditional stat boosts for your player.

Perhaps the biggest addition to this year’s Be A Pro is the non-NHL stuff. Your created player undergoes much more of a journey getting to the NHL than in previous titles. I enjoyed playing through a full minor league playoff while working to prove my worth to the NHL scouts. But I can’t rest on my laurels once in the NHL or I’ll be kicked back to the minor league. Play poorly in the big leagues and you’ll find yourself back in the AHL all over again. This year’s Be A Pro provides deeper development arcs for your created character and raises the stakes in a satisfying way.

"The new Form Score tracker is a chart that tracks player improvements and declines on a game-by-game basis"

And tracking your development is easier than ever with the new chapter structure. Want to immediately be in the midst of an NHL season and just focus on the “important” stuff? No problem—just skip to the next chapter and you’re there in the NHL regular season. For busier gamers, the option to skip weeks and entire months to reach your next chapter milestone is a very convenient feature. I also like the new Form Score tracker. It’s a chart that tracks player improvements and declines on a game-by-game basis, relaying player development in real time. Though, there was a constant ticking sound from the Form Score tracker that never ceased; hopefully such a glitch is patched because it becomes distracting and unnecessarily grating.

But one thing that’s not grating on the ears is the soundtrack. The licensed music is a nice mix of popular rock and alternative bands, but it’s the separate Be A Pro soundtrack that especially impressed me. Enjoy mellow lounge music? Well, it’s that with a bit of rich lo-fi butter spread across, resulting in one of the most original sports mode atmospheres I’ve encountered recently. That’s a rare thing in the age of consolidated EA Sports titles where originality can often suffer for trends that yield reliable yearly profits. To put it in the words of the modern zoomer: the Be A Pro mode menus are a vibe. They generally load faster than last year too, so that’s cool.

The menus in general load a little quicker and they look prettier too. Though there’s still slowdown when browsing player ratings or doing most things in the online modes. What doesn’t feel slow and groggy is the game-day presentation. The IQ statistics during games look sleek and seamless. Various useful percentages and statistics pop up dynamically on the ice during transitions without being distracting. This overlay of contextual info provides something useful to glance at in between all the action.
The commentary booth is the same Cybulski/Pounder duo from recent years, but I’ve noticed more seamless conversations this time around.

"Useful percentages and statistics pop up dynamically on the ice during transitions without being distracting."

I’ve reviewed three sports games this year, and one commentary moment from this very game beats them all. My Be A Pro center got the game-winning overtime goal in the previous game, and lo and behold the broadcast booth acknowledges it games later. And it gets mentioned so casually too—a remark on how careful the opposing team should be of me due to my recent overtime goal. It was a little referential moment that made the game feel immersive and reactive. This referential commentary extends to seasonal stats, player tendencies, and game highlights in general, and it’s all done in a surprisingly organic and seamless way.

But it’s not just the commentary that feels authentic—the crowds and broadcast presentation are improved from last year too. The crowd swells up to a roar during intense moments, eventually reaching a fever pitch when tied late in the 3rd period or during overtime. There were times I had to lower the volume due to thunderous crowd noise (that’s a good thing).

"The presentation is far more cinematic and interesting than prior years."

Legacy achievements finally get time to shine this time around. Winning the AHL Calder Cup or the monolithic Stanley Cup in the NHL actually feels significant. Your team takes time to pass around the trophy as the crowd cheers them on. Some teams actually have unique walkouts and mascots this year, and I’m hoping every team eventually gets their own sooner rather than later. Add to this a bunch of unique cinematics throughout Be A Pro career and presentation has been a success for this year’s NHL title.

HUT has been streamlined and iterated upon a bit too. Offline players finally have something to dig into with the new Cup Chase mode. Cup Chase provides players opportunities to test their team-building skills through multiple seasons. There are even exclusive rewards unique to this mode, making it worth doing for HUT aficionados who prefer online matches. Speaking of online, HUT adds a new ranked infrastructure, providing the kind of competitive content that was lacking last year. Another interesting addition to HUT is player combinations, which add bonuses to team lineups. Conceptually, boosting lines that share similar traits, such as player nationality or real-life team, sounds like a cool wrinkle, but it can easily result in some lopsided min/maxing. Now players are incentivized to match players a specific way on their line or risk losing out on the bonuses, which can hurt the freedom of team-building. One addition I do like is the hero and icon players that can be added to a team. Having legacy players like Sergei Fedorov on a team of contemporaries just adds a bit of personality and nostalgia to team-building.

"Line Combinations add bonuses to teams based on shared features among the players."

That about sums up my time with NHL 26. My opinion on Franchise and the other modes remains unchanged from last year’s review, and that’s because they’re largely identical to last year’s game. But this year has added a lot of meaningful changes that overhaul the experience in ways I really appreciate. I personally didn’t feel the addition of NHL EDGE data all that much, but it does add authenticity that superfans of the sport will appreciate. Be A Pro is awesome now, which is a big surprise, and the presentation has been improved across the board. NHL 26 is a step up from last year and the first one worthy of just about everyone’s time in recent memory.

Along with a focus on competitive multiplayer with a new ladder system, NHL 26 will also include a new game mode for offline players.

With the September 12 release date for EA Sports NHL 26 being just around the corner, the company has now revealed new details about how the Hockey Ultimate Team mode will work in this year’s instalment, and what kind of new features we can expect from the game. Along with this, there is also a new trailer for the upcoming hockey title, which you can check out below.

The first thing players will notice in EA Sports NHL 26 is the brand new main menu for the game. The redesigned menu focuses on reducing clutter and speeding up overall interactions that players will have with the title. Overall, the redesigned main menu is set to let players get into matches more quickly with faster load times, and keeping features that players want closer to the surface.

EA Sports NHL 26 is also getting a new game mode for players who prefer offline matches in the form of the Cup Chase. The new mode is an 18-game session with playoffs at the end, as well as best-of-three rounds. The game mode has been described as a “connected season format” with player progress and performance being important. Cup Chases have their own reward tracks that are separate from the XP Path. Cup Chase progress also, however, feeds into the overall XP Path.

For online players, HUT now has a proper competitive system, complete with ladders and Ranked game modes. Ranked will feature divisions, with the matchmaking floors ensuring that players never feel like they’re losing progress even if they lose a few games. Once a player reaches a certain division, they can’t be demoted below it. Reaching the higher-ranked Qualification Division also unlocks the most competitive stage in the game mode – HUT Champs. This is the division where the best players compete against each other, with winners then moving on to the Ultimate Ranks, which has season-specific jerseys as rewards. The ladder also resets with every seasonal cycle.

Team building in HUT is also getting more improvements in an effort to prevent the mode from just turning into a collection game where only the highest overall cards matter. HUT in EA Sports NHL 26 will feature a salary cap system, as well as player combinations to provide more depth to the team building. Player combinations are essentially ways for teams to get bonuses depending on the players in the roster, with requirements ranging from item type to nationalities, to even team links. Bonuses from this can affect Ability Points, Salary Cap space, and even overall ratings.

The system, along with the salary cap, feeds into the new seasonal programs that will be coming to HUT. Each season will bring with it four core programs: Captains, Heroes, Icons, and Rookies. Each program, in turn, will feature multiple drops throughout the year, and Alumni items are being reworked into being their own distinct card type.

HUT will be kicking off its first season early, before the game’s launch, with a season titled Fresh Ice. The season will include objectives, Moments and rewards. Those who buy the Deluxe Edition of EA Sports NHL 26 will also get their hands on a Fresh Ice player. Paired with this, the game is also bringing with it a new live content program dubbed Chel Weeks. Each one of these Chel Weeks will feature daily content drops spread out over five days, and the first of these will feature the Cult Superstars theme that spotlights fan-favourite hockey players.

EA Sports NHL 26 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For more details, check out some of the new systems powering the upcoming hockey title.

EA's signature NHL series returns with an added emphasis on goalies and much needed gameplay balance.

NHL 26 shifts from last year’s more offensive-oriented innovations to focus more on goaltending. The result is a far more dynamic defensive AI and a new goalie system dubbed crease control. Tying all the iterations together is the collaboration with NHL’s EDGE, which allows a stream of complex data points across real rinks into the virtual space of the game. While particular insights into Franchise and Be A Pro mode aren’t revealed at this time, there’s a lot of additions and changes to this year’s hockey game worth looking at. Here’s everything you need to know before purchasing NHL 26.

Mix of Generic and Authentic Face Scans for Player Models

EA’s NHL series still lags behind their other sports titles when it comes to player facial scans—well, aside from College Football where the scanning of hundreds of teams’ players just isn’t feasible today. In previous NHL games, only breakout star players had their likeness meticulously and authentically scanned, relegating other players to one of two lesser options: AI scans, or the uncanny generic character creation assets available to use in-game. NHL 26 is keeping this same structure, with more players getting the AI scan treatment than before, as seen through gameplay footage and previews.

80 New Save Animations

One aspect EA is adamant about improving is how goalies react and play. NHL 26 is practically overhauling the entire goalkeeping aspect of the game. The most immediately noticeable upgrades are the 80-plus new save animations. Better yet, goalies can now interrupt an animation to react to surprise situations. This will make it more of an authentic challenge to score goals, but also allow much smoother and responsive gameplay when playing as goalie yourself.

Goalies Behave with Unique Personalities

Despite the added variety, canned animations can still feel somewhat inauthentic if that’s all that’s driving the AI. NHL 26 has an another way to keep goalies from feeling predictable and generic and that’s it’s new size-based behavior system. Now the smaller goalies step out towards the ice to confront breakaway skaters with their positional agility using stick pokes and other moves to act on the shot. While larger more imposing goalies stick to the back of the net like a wall.

Positional Logic System for Goalies

But the big gameplay additions come in the form of what EA terms a positional logic system. Every veteran NHL gamer knows how effective, and in some cases broken, the quick cross-net one-timer is against AI goalies. Well, this year attempts to challenge that. Goalies now anticipate such opportunities by spreading across the net when the AI detects the possibility. This should not only provide better authenticity but also allow more scores via fake passes and trick shots.

New Ice-Q 2.0 Uses Real NHL EDGE Data

Moving on from goalies to general skaters, an overhauled AI system dubbed Ice-Q 2.0 arrives for NHL 26. This is more than mere PR-speak on behalf of EA, the NHL itself has partnered to give the series first-ever NHL EDGE real-time data. NHL EDGE is used to track various data points in real life games such as puck speed, skater acceleration, and puck score positions across infrared arena cameras.

How NHL EDGE Data is Used in the Game

All of this is being implemented into the game to better simulate player attributes, player tendencies, and the overall presentation and style. The game will use 14 infrared cameras to gather and track this data using the same system the real NHL does in their games.

Unique Player Tendency Habits

EA is also making an effort to differentiate players and make them more identifiable through their play. They’re doing this through a new AI system dubbed Tendencies. Tendencies are more subtle quirks, like wrapping the puck around tiny holes on the side of the net or powering through the center with confrontation in mind. These include some stat boosts but are more driven by specific AI habits, and with 22 Tendencies at launch, there’s a reasonable amount to differentiate players.

More Detailed Broadcast Presentations

Of course, where NHL EDGE makes its presence known in real life hockey is the stat sheet and replay booth. And this is precisely how replays operate in NHL 26. Using all that useful data, replays now show valuable info like puck speed along with a dozen other more in-depth stats. Expect a whole lot more info to be present during game broadcasts this time around.

Nerfed Vision Control

NHL 25 heavily promoted its new Vision Control mechanic last year; that’s still here, but it’s nerfed a bit. Vision Control is a way to maintain forward posture and space around the ice in front of the neutral zone. The thing that’s getting nerfed? Unlimited use without any downside. It was far too beneficial to just always use forward facing Vision Control in an aggressive fashion. Now they’ve taken feedback, balanced things a bit, and are penalizing over-usage of Vision Control. We don’t know the specifics on how this is balanced, but it should keep gameplay more realistic and competitive.

Addressing Player Feedback

The team at EA is doing more than just Vision Control adjustments. Following the feedback from last year’s game, several gameplay functions have been tweaked and balanced. Toe Drags, for example, are possible while skating backwards or sideways and not just when going forward. My favorite addition is a deception pass out of a fake shot, something that wasn’t at all fluid or organic in previous games. Wrist shots aren’t mentioned among the feedback items, which is disappointing considering how unnecessarily convoluted the control scheme was for wrist shots in NHL 25.

Overhauled X-Factors

X-Factors no longer provide passive buffs to skaters. The focus this time around is on situational X-Factors. Like other EA sports games, these X-Factors activate when a player is on a hot streak or in a high pressure situation. The added situations here serve to make each individual skater more unique, dovetailing with the Tendencies mentioned earlier. And for RPG fans, each X-Factor has three tiers that can be leveled up for greater effects. NHL 26 has 28 X-Factors in total with more to come in future updates.

Historic Players Added to HUT

For longtime NHL fans, the inclusion of all-time greats like Sergei Federov and Chris Pronger to HUT makes team-building even more attractive. A range of historic players from the past get grouped into Heroes and Icons categories. There’s six each at launch with more to drop as the year progresses.

Cross-Play

While EA’s NHL series is still limited to just PlayStation and Xbox platforms, at least cross-play works well between the two consoles. Cross-play will work within the WoC and HUT modes, allowing for both co-op and competitive play against friends through invitations and invites.

Release Times

The trend of staggered launch days continues and shows little sign of stopping. NHL 26 officially launches for retail worldwide on September 12th. That’s a full seven days after the early access launch on September 5th, which is available only for Deluxe Edition buyers and members of EA Plus, who get a 10-hour early access demo.

Platforms and Editions

Like last year, EA’s NHL game is available only on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. There’s only two editions at launch, the basic 69.99 standard edition, including a HUT NHL Player Pack, two World of Chel Battle Pass XP Boosts, and a Matthew Tkachuk item worth 99 overall. And the Deluxe Edition at $99.99, of which the price was suspiciously absent on the official website. This edition includes the following:

7-day early access (starting September 5)

4600 NHL Points

HUT Starter Choice Pack (83 OVR)

HUT NHL Player Pack

HUT Icon Choice Pack (86 OVR)

HUT Heroes Choice Pack (84 OVR)

Matthew Tkachuk 99 OVR item* (available immediately in NHL 25 with digital pre-order)

EA Sports NHL 26 will make use of NHL Edge data to model its players attributes, Tendencies, and even the in-game presentation.

After having officially unveiled EA Sports NHL 26 earlier this month, EA Sports has now revealed more details about the upcoming hockey title with a new trailer providing a deep dive into its gameplay. The trailer, which you can check out below, gives us new details about the ICE-Q 2.0 system that is powering the hockey game this year, and how it will affect gameplay.

ICE-Q 2.0, itself powered by the NHL Edge data gathered from real-world matches, will ultimately result in smarter AI and give them better internal tools to make decisions. Some of the NHL Edge data used by ICE-Q 2.0 includes skating acceleration and top speed, shot location and velocity, save percentage by zone, heat maps of player movement, puck possession time and zone usage, and body orientation and reaction time. This data is gathered through 14 infrared cameras, puck sensors, and jersey tags. Ultimately, this data all feeds into the game’s player attributes, Tendencies, and presentation.

While player attributes are fairly self-explanatory, Tendencies essentially encapsulate how players behave in a match. As described in the official post accompanying the video, Tendencies are player habits rather than being simply stat boosts. All in all, EA Sports NHL 26 will feature 22 unique Tendencies at launch, and might get more through post-launch updates. Presentation, on the other hand, will make matches feel more immersive thanks to new overlays, broadcast visuals, smarter replays, and stat-driven analysis.

Goalies are also getting an upgrade with the new Goalie Crease Control System. The aim of the new system is to provide more reactive goalkeepers that feel like they could be more capable of handling defense. To help this, more than 80 new animations have been added for goalkeepers saving a goal. This, along with new save logic and more positional awareness for AI-controlled goalies lets them pre-emptively fill out gaps in their team’s defenses.

Positioning for goalies is also now being tied to a player’s size and style. Juuse Saros, for example, known for being a more aggressive and smaller goalie, will challenge shooters and work at taking away their angles more actively. Larger goalies like Darcy Kuemper, on the other hand, will take advantage of more positional plays, staying deeper and relying on their own larger bodies to block shots.

The last of the big features of EA Sports NHL 26 is the fact that its X-Factors system is getting reworked. Having been built anew from the ground up, new X-Factors – numbering at 28 in total at launch – are built around specific gameplay identities, and will feature visual triggers and tactical outcomes. Each X-Factor now has three tiers of effectiveness, with abilities getting more pronounced the higher the tier gets.

EA Sports NHL 26 was announced with a new trailer earlier this month. The ice hockey game is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on September 12. Along with this, EA has also detailed a Deluxe Edition for EA Sports NHL 26, what kinds of in-game bonus goodies players will be able to get.

A Deluxe Edition of NHL 26 is also available for pre-order, giving players seven days of early access to the game ahead of its release.

EA has officially announced the newest entry in its ice hockey franchise – EA Sports NHL 26. The game is slated for release on September 12, and will be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The cover athletes for the Deluxe Edition of EA Sports NHL 26 have also been confirmed to be brothers Mathew and Brady Tkachuk, along with their father Keith Tkachuk. The title was announced with a trailer which you can check out below.

Along with the game itself, the Deluxe Edition will also offer players seven days of early access ahead of its September 12 release date, as well as other in-game goodies – 4,600 NHL Points, the HUT Icon Choice Pack, the HUT Starter Choice Pack, and the HUT Heroes Choice Pack, along with the World of CHEL Vanity Set.

There are also bonuses for buying either edition of the game, including the HUT NHL Player Pack, Matthew Tkachuk with 99 OVR being unlocked for instant use in last year’s NHL 25, and two XP boosts for the World of CHEL Battle Pass. Grabbing the standard edition of the game will also get you 500 NHL Points – a bonus that isn’t available in the Deluxe Edition of the game.

“My dad, Brady and I are all unique and play the way we want to. Sharing the cover of NHL 26 is an extension of that,” said Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk, who will also be the cover athlete for the standard edition of the game. “I’ve always tried to bring my own style to the ice, and seeing that captured in NHL 26 makes it feel like it is really me out there.”

When it comes to gameplay features, EA Sports NHL 26 will feature a revamped Be A Pro mode, which will take players on a journey from being a rookie in the sport to being an NHL superstar. The game mode will feature new storylines, characters, and even cutscenes, and will have players compete in various competitions, like the World Juniors, all the way to the draft and the big leagues.

As you might expect from a sports title by EA in this day and age, NHL 26 will also feature an Ultimate Team mode. According to the announcement, the mode will offer players “an all-new, dynamic way to compete” with new mechanics for team building, ranked matches, as well as an offline mode. Considering the title’s updated athlete roster, NHL 26’s Ultimate Team mode will also feature new Heroes and Icons player cards, as well as visual upgrades.

“NHL 26 is the most true-to-life experience we’ve ever built,” said creative director Mike Inglehart in the announcement. “It was created with fans who crave hockey authenticity in mind — the ones who live and breathe the game and know how it should feel. From deeper gameplay detail to the biggest Be A Pro update since NHL 21, everything we’ve done this year is about bringing them closer to the teams they love and the moments that define the NHL.”
