Playable on PS5 and PS4, Stray follows a cat who finds themselves falling into an unknown city, revealed to be run by robots. Alongside navigating its deteriorating corridors and alleyways with the drone, B-12, they must also evade the Zurk, a mysterious bacteria that feasts on organic and inorganic matter.

Released in 2022, Stray received positive reviews from critics and bagged a few awards, including Best Independent Game and Best Debut Game at The Game Awards.

As for the other titles, EA Sports WRC 24 is playable on PS5. It’s packed with the usual Career, Championship, and Time Trial modes while featuring cars from the 2024 season of WRC, WRC2 and Junior WRC. Then there’s Totally Accurate Battle Simulator for PS4 and PS5, which allows for simulating battles involving hundreds of comical wobblers. It even has online multiplayer.

After they go live, these three titles will be available until December 1st. In the meantime, you have until next week to subscribe to Essential (and higher tiers) for Alan Wake 2, Cocoon and Goat Simulator 3.

Ultimate Team Chemistry

The synergy or chemistry between players on your Ultimate Team is what determines how well they function as a team. Rated on a scale of 0 to 3, the ideal total team chemistry would be 3 multiplied by 11, or 33 chemistry points.

Individual chemistry is determined by club, league, and nationality, and under the best of circumstances, all 11 players would have to share all three traits for maximum chemistry effect.

Realistically, however, you will likely have an overlap of between 1 and 2 chemistry traits as you assemble your team.

Timing Trades

Snatching up the best deals on cards on the market has always been a matter of patiently waiting out the mass movements in prices. Weekends, beginning on Friday evening specifically, are the ideal time to shop around for deals as that is when the largest cohort of sellers comes online. Cross-play has expanded the size of the pool even further, with both generations of Xbox and PlayStation now able to trade with each other.

The greater majority of sellers also tend to dispose of their cards without much thought, or worse, panic selling in response to steep price drops. This presents an opportunity to get valuable cards on the cheap, as one man’s trash can be another man’s treasure.

Heroes And Icons

These two card types are a pricey but powerful addition to any team, with unique chemistry effects on both league and nationality. However, they are naturally hard to come by, at least not without investing large amounts of money in-game. Ideally, you will have one or two on your squad, while focusing on building up ordinary cards through Evolutions.

Evolutions

Cards with already respectable ratings can be ascended to their best stats through Evolutions. While not always available for every position at any given time, as the seasons progress you will be able to put your players through multiple Evolutions, and raise their overall ratings, by completing objectives as and when they are offered.

Live Events

This is the go-to limited-time mode for your squad to compete in special scenarios. Accessible via the Event Hub, certain criteria may have to be met first, in terms of squad composition, ability, and matches played.

Objective completion will earn you rewards such as packs, all of which is now much more easily viewable in the new user interface.

Tournaments

A returning favorite, this rotating mode may not always be available for play. When the Tournaments do drop however, they will have certain requirements to enter, as well as limits to entries.

Gauntlets

These groups of up to five matches also rotate, initially being made available once a fortnight. Gauntlets have you running a fresh squad for each match, with the goal of completing objectives. While this is not an elimination mode, winning more leads to greater rewards.

Rivals

Rivals is still here, but with added improvements.

Bounties are relatively simple challenges that you can be offered before your round of Rivals, the successful completion of which can earn you rewards such as Rival Stage Skips to progress faster, or the more mundane coins and packs, among others. Whether you win or you lose, you get to keep your prize.

Duels are more competitive Bounties, wherein both you and your opponent have the same challenge at stake.

Champions

With the removal of Playoffs from Champions, you must now qualify instead through accumulating Champions Qualification Points, and attaining a certain minimum Rivals Division.

Challengers

If you can’t crack the Divisions, Challengers offers the same broad experience without the astronomically high level of play.

Career Mode Setup

Begin by choosing to manage the career of either a Player or a Manager. Any necessary updates in terms of data must be downloaded after this step through the prompt, but can also be done manually via Settings -> Edit Teams -> Download Updates.

Manager Career

Managers can be custom created, if Real Managers aren’t suited to your style.

A Manager’s career progresses by assembling a winning squad through scouting and developing recruits with the assistance of coaches, and then amassing trophies.

Youth Scouting

The three youth talent scouts are foundational members of your management staff, as they are who discover the talent pool for your Youth Academy to sign, and who in turn will eventually develop into prospective picks either for the squad or to trade away.

A scout with good judgment affects player quality, while experience determines the player quantity scouted each interval.

A number of other scouting factors can be tweaked as well, from location to positions to roles.

Youth Squad

These up and comers represent the new blood that you can tap into for further development, either for the team or to trade. Scouts can only do so much as they seek out above average OVR recruits based on criteria that you have set, with the remainder of the task down to player development of specific styles and skills at the hands of competent coaches.

Youth talent can also be recognized in periodic youth tournaments in order to slowly but surely raise their OVR, until they eventually qualify for a real team.

Global Transfer Network

Up to six scouts can be dispatched to scour the world for professional talent based on pre-determined instructions. These can range from age to style to role and everything in between. Once again, the scouts’ judgment and experience determine quality and quantity of prospects, respectively.

The scouts will periodically submit reports, providing you with basic information on potential recruits. More advanced reports can then be requested, including player value and estimated transfer fees.

Once you have a shortlist, it is time to begin negotiations for a trade, with a number of acquisition methods at your disposal. Whether you opt to buy, loan, or swap, be aware that lowball offers can be rejected outright with no room for further discussion.

Coaching

Coach Management is how Managers select and hire coaches from the Coach Market. These Coaches level up players in specific departments, thus improving the abilities of the squad as a whole.

Hiring coaches is as straightforward as picking one for specific player skill development, though good tactical knowledge is just as important.

Coaches level up over time themselves, based on wins garnered with tactical presets, so it is advisable to hold on to coaches with an average rating if you already employ them.

Live Start Points

Analogous to fantasy football systems, Live Start Points let you play a speculative version of events from the ongoing real-world season, built on a foundation of real-life data. You can jump in at any point in the timeline as well. Both Players and Managers can embark on this alternative reality journey.

Player Career

While playing as a Real or Icon Player is straightforward, new player avatars can customize their background through Origin Stories.

A Player’s career progresses by going through training, completing objectives in matches, and various other gameplay activities.

These Origin Stories will have some bearing on team relationships and career progression.

Leveling Up In Career Mode

Players, on the other hand, must complete a variety of Training Drills and match objectives in order to drive up their Manager Rating, which has a bearing on whether your player gets shunted to the sidelines or worse, off of the team.

Bronze Pack Opening

These packs listed under Classic Packs in the Store are the tried and trusted method to essentially exchange the currency spent on buying them for the sell value of their contents, which almost always turns a tidy profit. The margins are not huge, but good enough when done in bulk runs.

Transfer Market Sniping

By filtering for players using PlayStyles and Chemistry Styles, you can snap up the cheapest possible players on sale, by quickly cycling through the Minimum Buy Now pricing in increments of 50. Once you snipe a cheap offering, you can flip it for a few thousand in profit. This method takes advantage of other impatient buyers who are simply seeking a player with a specific style, regardless of pricing.

Timing

The greater majority of the playerbase only logs in to play the game during certain timeslots and days of the week, i.e after working hours and on off-days. Ideally you will avoid making purchases or sales during periods of the lowest player activity as anyone online at those times are the truly hardcore audience. Instead, wait for the weekends, or late evening in Europe on weekdays, for the most number of players to be online when. This also applies to online matchups.

Squad Battles

A grinding method versus the AI, Squad Battles is the route for casual players who just want guaranteed coins while playing the game normally. 

Moments

These are short and quick games that serve to build skills while rewarding you with packs.

Online Draft

A versus mode online, this high stakes mode requires either 15,000 coins or 300 FC Points to enter, but the coin returns are significantly higher if you are semi-competent at playing the game against other players.

Unlock Archetypes

In order to unlock twelve more Archetypes beyond the first one selected, navigate to My Pro, then select ‘Enter Archetypes’ at the bottom. Select each locked Archetype in order to view the three distinct in-game currencies that can be used to unlock them.

Level Up Archetypes

Each individual Archetype has a 50 level progression system that you will unlock for their rewards. Over time, the Archetype card will go from Bronze, to Silver, then Gold, and finally Icon to exhibit progression.

The Archetype Card Backgrounds can also be customized via the Clubs Store, under Essentials for either 5,000 Clubs coins, or 50 FC Points.

Be A Pro Conversation Response

The Trait: Confidence response plays a critical role in future dialogue options, as it gives you extra points towards unlocking both X-Factors, as well as Traits.

Interview Question Responses

In subsequent interviews, always select the Confident response option. The first question will grant you +2 Trait Points, and the second will gain you +2 X-Factor Points.

Activities

As each day advances, expend energy towards X-Factor Training via the Activities menu. This will slowly earn you the additional X-Factor Points you will need to unlock the remaining X-Factors. Once you have exhausted all of your Energy for the day, switch to the Health sub-menu, and spend as much of your pro’s Health as you can afford in exchange for additional Energy, up to the point he becomes Exhausted.

Carefully Advance Day through the week until the next Energy replenishment, then rinse and repeat. Before you know it, you will have all the X-Factor Points you could possibly need to unlock the X-Factors you really want.

Only when a new entry makes significant, fundamental changes does it serve as an exception to this genre-specific rule. Unsurprisingly, EA Sports FC 26 is not such an exception. It is, instead, exactly what you would expect- an iterative yearly upgrade that retains the established framework while making tweaks based on player feedback. Thankfully, that is something that the game does quite well. Though FC 26 isn’t a huge leap over its predecessors, and though not all of its changes make meaningful difference, those that do work make it worth a look for fans of the sport and the franchise.

One of FC 26’s headlining changes is the instant demarcation between two different play styles. There’s Competitive, which is the default for Ultimate Team and all other online or multiplayer modes, and retains past FC and FIFA titles’ focus on speed and adrenaline-fueled action. Then there’s Authentic, which players can choose in all offline modes (primarily Career Mode), which, as its name suggests, attempts to emphasize authentic simulation to a far greater degree by slowing down the pace of the game. In years past, the franchise has consistently struggled to find the balance between those two sides, and has often received criticism for going too far in one direction on the other. Having both available as different options to appeal to different players, then, is a clever solution to the problem.

It works, too, because you can definitely tell the difference. Personally, I much prefer Authentic Mode, which is much more suited to my Career Mode-centric play sessions. With the moment to moment on-pitch action slowed down, the game places greater focus on each individual phase of play, which means each action on the pitch feels more meaningful. Defending feels weightier and more precise, midfield build-ups and battles take on a much more tactical form, and attacks seem like they rely more on pace differences and speeds of plays.

A winger bombing down on a counter and a bulky center back chasing him back shouldn’t have the same pace, which is something that past FIFA and FC games haven’t always been great at reflecting- and though it doesn’t feel like FC 26 has fully solved that issue with its Authentic Mode, it does feel like it has gotten closer than certainly its immediate predecessor did.

I do realize, of course, that the series’ faster, arcadey, almost ping pong-esque gameplay style does appeal to a vast portion of the audience – and even to myself, from time to time – but I am glad nonetheless that not only has FC 26 made a conscious effort to walk back on FC 25’s excessive tendencies in this area following criticism from fans, but has also done it, for the most part, quite effectively. Thankfully, those who do prefer that faster, more arcadey style of play do have access to it as well, so even if you want to retain that faster moment to moment action in Career Mode, not just in the multiplayer offerings, you can certainly go ahead and do just that.

EA Sports FC 26 makes a handful of other notable changes to Career Mode, though they’re not all as successful. For instance, players are now offered more ways to engage with the mode, with several specific scenarios being offered as an option when you’re starting out your career, tasking you with anything from dealing with a significant points deduction at the start of a season to winning a certain amount of trophies to grappling with a unique set of financial circumstances hamstringing your club’s development. Another option lets you simulate a total of five leagues at the same time, which will be a particularly popular option for Career Mode enthusiasts, I imagine.

While those additions do feel meaningful, others feel a bit more superfluous. For instance, the new Unexpected Events feature proclaims to throw, well, unexpected curveballs at you in the middle of a season every now and then, from players suddenly deciding that they want to leave for some reason or the other to unforeseen injuries or retirements.

Really, however, this in particular just feels like EA just taking an ordinary part of the Career Mode experience and slapping a label onto it to make it feel like a significant new addition. Dealing with unexpected player related events is what Career Mode has always been built on, and this just seems like a different skin that doesn’t even change that much on the surface, much less at its core.

On the pitch, EA Sports has been promising long requested improvements made to defending gameplay, and at least if you have stuck with the FC games the last couple of years, it’s likely that you will quickly notice the difference.

Tackles feel more efficient, defensive movements feel much more accurate and reliable, and things such as automatic tracking back for players not in your control (just as one example) do come across as meaningful improvements to defensive player AI. Of course, the FIFA / FC games are no strangers to making abundant gameplay tweaks and changes with post launch patches, and not always for the better – FC 25’s early months (and beyond) still stand fresh in series fans’ memories – so here’s hoping that FC 26 doesn’t end up walking back on its defensive gameplay changes.

"If you haven’t played these games before and just wanted a good football game, then this is as good of a title to look into as any other EA Sports FC game."

If you are already a fan of the series, then you will find plenty to like in this game across the board. From the changes made to the on-pitch gameplay in response to player feedback to ones made to the structure of the specific modes, to even the franchise’s long overdue recognition of the fact that its immense audience may want two completely separate styles of play – EA Sports  FC 26 is a great game for those already on board with the series.

But if you’re not? Well, if you have played previous games, and didn’t care much for them, or were hoping for dramatic changes, this title is not for you. If you haven’t played these games before and just wanted a good football game, then this is as good of a title to look into as any other EA Sports FC game.

Electronic Arts confirmed that bugs preventing players from entering the game and connecting them to sub-optimal data centers, resulting in lag, were resolved fairly quickly. However, it’s currently investigating issues such as controller inputs occasionally not registering or dropping completely in matches, PC optimization and stability woes, and more.

Two New Gameplay Presets

FC 26 separates gameplay into two new presets: Competitive and Authentic, each based on how and where players take to the pitch. Competitive gameplay tunes towards high player control and responsiveness, with a focus on online modes such as Clubs and Ultimate Team. Authentic gameplay presents the action in higher realism, with a truer-to-life match tempo designed for offline play and Career Mode. EA Sports believe these two modes align the experience more closely with player expectations.

Refined Gameplay Fundamentals

For this year’s iteration, EA Sports adopted a simple ethos: ‘make gameplay better.’ They’ve absorbed a wealth of community feedback and addressed long-standing concerns. As a result, core gameplay fundamentals have been reworked and updated, from dribbling, passing, and shooting, to tackling and goalkeeper reliability. Physicality and match tempo have also been refined, with EA confident these updates will fix issues that’ve hindered earlier titles.

Dribbling Reworks

Dribbling sees the most comprehensive overhaul in FC 26, improving agility and responsiveness both on and off the ball. Dynamic Dribbling provides better control and increased consistency alongside re-tuned Touch Intervals, adjusted Foot Preference logic, and refreshed animations, including faster jog dribbles and sharper turns Animation consistency in relation to player height balances performance between short and tall players. Altogether, these reworks bring new levels of authenticity and fluidity to one of football’s core skills.

Re-evaluated Movement

Responding to community feedback that players feel too sluggish and heavy, FC 26 introduces explosive acceleration and razor-sharp turns, with running animations reworked to appear more natural. The fastest players now feel appropriately quick, with attacker-defender speed differentials improved to achieve more realistic balance. Acceleration types have been reduced to three, allowing for more predictable patterns of play.

Smarter Goalkeepers

A bugbear for FC’s community is the feeblemindedness of the game’s goalkeepers, with complaints ranging from poor positioning and shot deflecting, to unrealistic animations. In response, EA Sports are drumming up a suite of improvements to make goalkeepers more reliable. Changes include improved deflection control and shot stopping ability, which incorporates the ability to better read shot trajectory. Positioning now utilises machine-learning AI, enabling goalkeepers to intelligently position themselves in the box and between the posts.

New PlayStyles

Fixing reports of FC 25’s PlayStyles being unbalanced, EA Sports FC 26 adds, consolidates, and reworks existing PlayStyles whilst introducing a suite of new ones. These additions include the ability to dominate aerial battles with Aerial Fortress, deliver headers with pin-point accuracy with Precision Header, specialise in creative play via the Inventive PlayStyle, become a physical force with Enforcer, or become a player known for extravagant finishes via Game Changer. The latter exemplifies FC 26’s consolidation of pre-existing PlayStyles in that it retools the capability of the former Flair PlayStyle.

More Community-Led New Features

Leading with feedback-inspired accessibility features, FC 26 aims to set a new standard on accessibility in annual sports titles. Working with the Accessibility Design Council, EA have developed a High Contrast mode which enhances the visual separation between players, pitch, and events, making the action clearer for visually impaired gamers. Options within High Contrast mode include pitch saturation sliders, customisable colours for home and away kits, referees, and the ball, plus player and stadium shadow toggles, and improved subtitles. High Contrast mode will be available in PvP play.

New Player Roles

Four new Player Roles are being introduced in FC 26 to provide opportunities to customise tactical approaches beyond regular formations. These new Player Roles include Ball-Playing Keeper, Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, and Box Crasher. The new Roles join the existing roles, and on the whole the system has become more flexible meaning, for example, attacking players can express themselves with more freedom to join in other areas of play. Accompanying Roles is Versatile, a brand new Focus, which encompasses just-mentioned freedom into a Focus which can be added to Fullback, Classic 10, Winger, Poacher, and Advanced Forward roles. Furthermore, ten new Focuses for existing Roles are incoming, each seemingly with versatility in mind, from freeroaming wingbacks, to ball-winning box-to-box midfielders and false 9s who’ll run into the box from deep.

Redefined Manager Career

In response to demand for more variety, different, or unique challenges in Career Mode, FC 26 is introducing the Manager Live Career experience, a dynamic hub with evolving challenges and scenarios that’ll change on a weekly and monthly basis throughout the season. Some of these challenges will align with real-world events, from tense Champions League knockout tournaments to navigating the chaos of transfer deadline day.

New Archetypes

Aiming to deliver a more meaningful progression system in FC 26 are Player Archetypes. Inspired by thirteen real-life icons of the sport, players will be able to unlock, develop, and progress their Player Career unlike any previous football sim. The Archetypes are intended to offer a more personalised and strategic form of player development, encouraging progression which mirrors an individual’s style.

Signature Perks

EA Sports FC 26’s Signature Perks are new abilities which are tied to player Archetypes and their unique Specialisations. With Specialisations being unique to specific Archetypes, players already have potential to hone in on their areas of expertise, an example being a physical enforcer archetype who specialises with strength and positioning attributes. Signature Perks provide temporary attribute boosts to fulfil a chosen playstyle further, and come in three varieties: action-based, mechanic-based, and team-focused.

Changes to FUT

Sweeping changes are coming to Football Ultimate Team, with a raft of updates which again are the result of player feedback. Changes include competitive gameplay reworks which place renewed focus on control and consistency, revamped Rivals and Champs, match outcome improvements which should alleviate any frustration if an opponent leaves during a draw, and Live Events, a brand new form of matchmaking touting various match settings and entry requirements alongside new Tournaments and Gauntlets formats.

Rivals Revamp

Details on FC 26’s revamped Rivals mode aren’t complete yet, but from what we know it’s clear EA feel players of all skill levels want Rivals to feel exciting and more rewarding, even if their team doesn’t win. A newly introduced system is Bounties, which can trigger during a Rivals match. Examples include scoring the last goal or keeping a clean sheet, with rewards coming for completed Bounties there’s always something to play for. Likewise, ante-upping Duels pool the Bounty between each player, ensuring only one player can reap the reward. New Limited Checkpoints track losses and will relegate a player back to a more appropriate skill level faster than waiting for a season to end.

Quality of Life Improvements

Numerous quality of life improvements pepper FC 26: revamped match importance ensures formations echo a match’s significance whilst form logic improvements ensure players can break out of a poor run of form more naturally. UI tweaks in the shape of out-of-position indicators, with-and-without ball views, and active tactic shortcuts smoothen in-game friction whilst a tactical spider-chart breaks down tactics into an easy-to-understand format. There’s a whole host of QoL improvements throughout gameplay and career mode in FC 26.

Ultimate Edition Pre-Order Bonuses

EA Sports FC 26 Ultimate Edition comes with a suite of extras: 4500 FC Points for Switch players, 6000 for everyone else; an additional FUT EVO slot; the Season 1 Premium Pass, and up to seven days of early access beginning 19th September. Those who pre-order will earn a trio of ‘early bird’ bonuses: a +99 shot boosting EVO, an ICON player item, and a 1-in-5 OVR ICON 93+ player pick.

There’s a lot of cool new stuff to enjoy in FC 26 as a result, and a lot of those additions are aimed at regaining lost ground from last year. Without further ado, let’s dive into how FC 26 is setting itself apart from its predecessor.

1. Stamina Nerfs on AI Teammates

Stamina on AI-controlled teammates is going to get quite the nerf, with the change aimed at bringing a new layer of challenge to your matches. You’re going to have to get really smart with positioning and get better at retaining possession while paying close attention to your players and their stamina levels if you want to get ahead.

2. Refined AI Teammate Positioning

If the thought of having to manage your players’ stamina has you wondering how you’re ever going to win a match when the AI gets your players too focused on the central areas of the field, have no fear. EA has paid attention to that particular wrinkle and responded with a player AI that is poised to position them better when things are heated.

That could offset the stamina nerf, making for a more balanced experience that makes each match a lot more exciting and immersive, and just more engaging overall as you try to dominate the field and carve a path to fame.

3. Nerfed Boosts and Through-Balls

Addressing another gripe players had with FC 25, EA has nerfed the L1 boost’s speed and the power of your initial through-ball to better simulate a real-life experience without the undue advantages that players were deriving from the speed boosts in last year’s title.

Once again, it could work very well with other optimizations to vastly improve the gameplay loop on offer in EA’s upcoming title, and allow the experience to feel a lot more authentic. We’re particularly interested to see how these changes will be implemented in the Competitive and Authentic modes, considering how they’re both aimed at different kinds of players.

4. A New Free Kick Camera Angle

Adjustments to the free kick camera angle are geared towards bringing you as close as you can be to the action while providing a better view for you to line up the perfect shot.

This is quite a welcome change, affording more depth to the gameplay loop through small yet meaningful changes, a sign that EA is indeed working to make FC 26 a football simulator that does the best possible job it can to bring you as close to the real thing as it can.

5. New Stadiums

With over 170 stadiums, including some great ones from across the world, FC 26 is taking the immersion to new heights. Among the most notable ones is the Inter Miami Chase Stadium and, of course, the return of the ever-famous Maradona Stadium, which was conspicuous by its absence in FC 25.

With a host of new visual touches also slated to improve the experience, it looks like every pitch you play on is going to be brought to life in a way that can make you expect to even feel the grass at your heels every time you take the field.

Its Career Mode brings unique, dynamic weekly and monthly goals for your manager that can be quite immersive to engage with. Mirroring the real world, they could present occurrences like Champions League knockout stages, transfer deadlines, and scenarios crafted to give you something to think about as you go about building a team that has it all.

The Competitive gameplay preset is going to be excellent with the ability to be affiliated with multiple clubs, while additions like dynamic live events and a few changes to Rush mode can make things even better.

For instance, Live Events now feature varying entry requirements and a revamped rule set for Rush gameplay. In addition to an increased lobby size and the new Be-A-Goalkeeper System, Club Rush could just be among FC 26’s most outstanding features. Gauntlets is a new Ultimate Team mode that requires you to bring in a new squad for up to five matches. While you don’t have to worry about elimination, you definitely want to win more than you lose, considering that an improved win-loss ratio results in better rewards!

For those of you who like to build the best squads you can, this one’s going to be quite the entertainer. And with Linked Events added into the fray, things are going to be quite hectic indeed.
