Like many of the children of the 80s and 90s, I had a grandfather who fought in World War II. Like most veterans, he was incredibly proud of that fact, and like most children of the 90s, I grew up virtually fighting my grandfather’s war in games like Medal of Honor or Call of Duty. Well, not precisely. You see, he fought in the Pacific Theater, a part of the war that video games, and media in general, have decided to ignore, with a few exceptions such as The Pacific, Letters from Iwo Jima, and games like Medal of Honor: Rising Sun and Call of Duty: World at War.

I’ve always suspected that’s because it’s so morally acceptable to kill Nazis. There’s no justification needed. They’re Nazis. They’re evil. You have to kill them, so you do. It’s probably why there has been no shortage of World War II games over the years. They’re just so easy to make. You don’t need to come up with an original premise, story, weapons, enemies or game mechanics. You just drop a guy, probably American, into World War II, and have him kill Nazis. Why? Because they’re Nazis, man.

"Like most World War II games, Enemy Front opts to focus on the war’s European Theater. The story follows Robert Hawkins, an American (because of course he is) journalist who is more dedicated to finding the war’s next great story than fighting the Nazis."

Like most World War II games, Enemy Front opts to focus on the war’s European Theater. The story follows Robert Hawkins, an American (because of course he is) journalist who is more dedicated to finding the war’s next great story than fighting the Nazis. Of the course of the game, he’ll join up with various groups of resistance fighters – the Polish, the French, the Dutch – and gradually come to the realization that the war, and the people fighting it, are more important than finding the next great story, and Hawkins ultimately dedicates himself to telling the stories of the brave men and women who persevere against the Nazis in the face of impossible odds.

It’s a nice thought, on paper. The problem is that the plot is patently ludicrous. Hawkins is billed as an everyman, a background character, and for a while, you believe it. At least, until an early level sees your French contact, who is going to smuggle Hawkins and his partner, a photographer, out of Nazi occupied France, captured by the Nazis. The photographer, of course, is too frightened to do anything except cower behind a nearby rock, but not Hawkins! Armed with nothing but a pistol, he sets off after the Nazis, decimates a few dozen Nazi soldiers, destroys a Panzer tank, and saves the contact single-handedly.

He then uses the fame from the ensuing story to procure a spot on a top secret Dutch team sent on a mission to destroy the Nazi supply of heavy water, and thus delay their attempts at crafting a nuclear weapon, because this is clearly something that journalists did all the time in World War II. The sheer stupidity of the plot might be bearable if every character Hawkins interacts with wasn’t perpetually shocked by his frightening capacity for bloodshed, but everyone continues to view the man as some sort of liability, often referring to him as “newspaper man” and questioning his ability to contribute to the cause as though he hasn’t brutally and efficiently dispatched dozens of Nazis before their very eyes.

"I wish I could tell you that the story, which is poorly written in addition to being about as intelligent as a bag of rusty hammers, is the worst part of Enemy Front, and that the gameplay makes up for it, but I can’t. Every aspect of this game, from the stealth to the enemy AI, is heavily flawed."

I wish I could tell you that the story, which is poorly written in addition to being about as intelligent as a bag of rusty hammers, is the worst part of Enemy Front, and that the gameplay makes up for it, but I can’t. Every aspect of this game, from the stealth to the enemy AI, is heavily flawed. The allies in question are, of course, nearly useless, and rarely contribute to the combat scenarios you’ll find yourself in. The enemies aren’t that smart either, often running around corners into your bullets, but you’re allies are definitely worse, so it’s up to Hawkins to get everything done It’s a good thing for these Europeans that American photojournalists are here to save the day! He’s so efficient that one wonders why the U.S. didn’t just drop him into Berlin with a couple of rifles and grenades and call it a war, but apparently that never crossed the minds of the top brass.

The gameplay is what you’d expect from a first-person shooter in the post Call of Duty 4 world. Hawkins is allowed two primary weapons, a pistol, and a few grenades and other explosives, and left to find his way through the game’s rather large levels. The environments are one of the few things Enemy Front gets right. They’re big and expansive, and allow you to approach most of the situations any way you please. In fact, it’s sometimes more efficient to avoid large groups of enemies entirely, and just sneak through the areas. You won’t get to see Hawkins’ magnificent killing prowess this way, but hey, them’s the breaks.

Unfortunately, opting to turn the whole thing into a sneaking mission raises other problems. It’s possible to sneak up behind enemies and execute a stealth kill, but the animations take far too long to make them viable, likely because Hawkins is enjoying himself too much, and executing one usually means leaving yourself open to being spotted by other enemies, who will run up to you while you finish choking and stabbing your victim and begin shooting you at point-blank range. This is a problem because you aren’t invincible during these scenes, which makes the stealth kills almost pointless in any given situation.

"No, the biggest problem is the bugs. Enemy Front crashed on me the first time I ever launched it. That probably should have been a sign of where things were going, but I continued on, and the game continued to crash during loading screens, after I died, and really any time it found convenient."

Still, the game does give you other tools to be sneaky. You can throw rocks to distract enemies, use loud sounds to mask your shots, and mark enemy locations on your minimap for future reference. The game even provides a meter that measures how aware your enemies are of your presence. Once again, however, stealth far better in theory than it is in practice. Enemies are fairly frequent, and it’s hard to get around them all without being spotted. It’s definitely possible, but it’s time consuming, and it’s far more efficient to just murder everything you see before moving on.

Thankfully, murdering things is fairly satisfying, even if the game is a little generic. Guns are loud, and enemies react fairly well to being hit, which lends everything a sense of weight. CI Games even borrows a bit from their Sniper: Ghost Warrior series, as the game will occasionally zoom out and follow bullets to their intended targets in slow motion. It’s a nice touch, and the sniping is one of the game’s better aspects. Unfortunately, even the satisfaction you’ll gain from this is short-lived due to the game’s awful hit detection, which makes everything a bit of a gamble. Shooting a guy in the head or the gut will occasionally produce no reaction, but shoot that same guy’s earlobe? Headshot, baby!

And that brings me to Enemy Front’s biggest problem. No, it’s not the graphics. The game uses the CryEngine, but you’d be forgiven if you didn’t notice because of the poor character models and the low-res environmental textures. No, the biggest problem is the bugs. Enemy Front crashed on me the first time I ever launched it. That probably should have been a sign of where things were going, but I continued on, and the game continued to crash during loading screens, after I died, and really any time it found convenient.

"Enemies have a startling tendency to drop through the floor, as one did when I was about to snipe him (though his icon continued to face me on my minimap for quite a while afterwards, no matter where I turned), and certain scripted sequences will sometimes trigger improperly."

We’ve already talked about the shoddy hit detection, but that isn’t the game’s only other issue. Enemies have a startling tendency to drop through the floor, as one did when I was about to snipe him (though his icon continued to face me on my minimap for quite a while afterwards, no matter where I turned), and certain scripted sequences will sometimes trigger improperly. This, coupled with the frequent crashing, makes it nearly impossible to enjoy what few good points the campaign has.

I say the campaign because Enemy Front also has a multiplayer mode. There are only four maps and three modes: Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, and Radio Transmission. The last of the three is the most interesting, a spin on territories modes that require you to capture and hold radios long enough for them to send a signal, with the added wrinkle that capturing two radios that are next to one another will boost the signal, and fill your team’s bar up even faster. Unfortunately, the game is pretty much bereft of players, and the small amount of maps and modes means that this probably won’t change anytime soon.

What we’re left with, then, is a World War II game that attempts to do something different, but ultimately fails due to a poor story, mediocre gunplay, awful AI, weak game mechanics, and a slew of technical problems. It’s a shame, because you can tell that CI Games in genuinely trying here. But if this is the best they can do, perhaps it’s best if they stay out of World War II.

A visually shoddy, yet alluring title from CI games bound to send you into whorls of reminiscences.

It’s been ages since any game has tackled the theme of the World Wars since the success of the series like Call of Duty, Medal of Honour, Brothers in Arms et al. Enemy Front goes back to the theme that we have all loved, and although the theme seems to have been overused, CI Games have made a solid entry in the market with a WW II game that they have rolled out from a different perspective, involving the Polish.

The game may feel very much like the earlier World War games, but yet has a personality of its own and doesn’t seem hackneyed or redundant. Using the CryEngine 3, the game was released on both the consoles of the older generation as well as on the PC platform. The game fares modestly across all the platforms although with the CryEngine 3 mentioned, it does seem to be a disappointment.

" Particle effects and alpha processing are not neatly done, resulting in fires looking rather odd and having no element of transparency. Player animations are at times rigid and seem as if some characters in the game are having fits."

Enemy Front on the Xbox 360 does look enrapturing at first look, but it most certainly doesn’t utilise the full potential of the MS console. The game pits you in the midst of ravaged cities and country sides which are beautifully detailed, although the lack of high resolution textures is felt often. While most buildings and objects are carefully detailed, some very obvious elements like the ground and crenellations strewn here and there for cover have a dearth of detailing which is a disappointment.

Even so, the depth of field in the game is sufficient and there isn’t more one could ask for in this regard. Whilst great pains are taken to detail the guns and make them react to the worldly elements (like light) in the game, vegetation is a let down with trees and bushes looking like green planks stuck on huge toothpicks. Anti-aliasing is not much of complain if you discount the shadow outlines.

Particle effects and alpha processing are not neatly done, resulting in fires looking rather odd and having no element of transparency. Player animations are at times rigid and seem as if some characters in the game are having fits. The negatives aside, the game still does have really good shadows.

Lighting in the game has been exquisitely used to its advantage and lends the game a charm, supplemented by the shadows, even if somewhat marred by the lack of proper anti-aliasing techniques. Anisotropic filtering is missing and it quite wrenched my heart to see such a beautifully crafted game lack that. On the other hand, ambient occlusion IS in place, but not ubiquitously.

You may come across it here and there as you chance to scrutinise a certain bundle of planks, or a door you’re about to go through, or certain stone blocks lying about. It does help the game to look better, and even though there isn’t much of it available, better that little than none.

" . The lighting system on the PS3 retains the same brilliance like that on the Xbox 360. Ambient occlusion is present, but again, cannot be seen throughout the game and only certain objects flung about the map feature that. Soft shadows and texture mapping are almost at par with the 360 but at some points they don’t hold up against its MS counterpart somehow."

The Ps3 version of the game remains largely the same as the Xbox 360 version. The textures on the PS3 are the same as that of the Xbox, but it shoots ahead in particle effects and a very minute improvement in the alpha processing; the latter’s difference is almost invisible to the eye so the improvement counts for nought.

The shadows largely remain similar across the two platforms although anti-aliasing on shadows is seemingly better on the Sony console. The lighting system on the PS3 retains the same brilliance like that on the Xbox 360. Ambient occlusion is present, but again, cannot be seen throughout the game and only certain objects flung about the map feature that. Soft shadows and texture mapping are almost at par with the 360 but at some points they don’t hold up against its MS counterpart somehow.

Depth of field as is again at par with the MS console but the shading and texture mapping are marginally better. Anisotropic on the PS3 isn’t a great improvement but it is there nonetheless. All in all, there isn’t anything that makes the game radically different on either platform and hence there is no real rivalry about which console plays the game better.

Both consoles have no horizontal tearing problems or stuttering issues. frame rate problems are minimal, but still noticeably there on both the consoles, more so on the PS3.

"Reflections are pretty good and the water effects are excellent to behold in the PC version of the game. The 3D skybox in the game is brilliant and the depth of field and the detailing for the same does not give opportunity for many complaints. Even with the unkempt utilisation of the CryEngine 3, the game’s lighting and bloom effects are quite exquisite which makes roaming out in the open a delight."

On the PC, the game looks infinitely better; bear in mind that Enemy Front looks better in comparison to the consoles, but per se the game leaves one wanting a lot more. Discounting the fact that the game fails to touch the graphical benchmark of the time, it is decorous.

Whilst the texture mapping is visibly better in every aspect vis-a-vis the consoles, it still lacks proper detailing. Again, the lack of detail is felt most when looking down at the ground; it looks bland and unreal. The same is the case with some of the walls of buildings where they seem like painted cardboards.

Reflections are pretty good and the water effects are excellent to behold in the PC version of the game. The 3D skybox in the game is brilliant and the depth of field and the detailing for the same does not give opportunity for many complaints. Even with the unkempt utilisation of the CryEngine 3, the game’s lighting and bloom effects are quite exquisite which makes roaming out in the open a delight.

Character actions/animations occasionally suffer, evident from their clothes not being responsive to the elements around (to wind, movement etc.).Shadows on the other hand are good in the game and so is ambient occlusion. AO utilised in the game is not the best to be seen out there, but it’s not a damper at all.

That may be so, but the foliage is downright appalling. The trees and grass are not appropriately detailed and do not react to the player moving through them. The game has paltry system requirements with the game being capable of running on a PC with 2.5+Ghz dual core processor like the Intel E4700 with 3 Gigabytes of RAM and a low end card like the 8800 GT or even the Radeon 3850.There have been reported issues of card heating in some cases but it has been most common in PCs with SLI configuration.

Even with such low a system requirement, the game occasionally suffers from frame rate drops but it is nothing that would make you flustered. A few patches in due time should set the game right on track.

"The game’s soundtrack is brilliant and enrapturing and gels in with the theme of the game flawlessly. The story of the game is a little different with a solid gameplay. One thing that I really found appealing was the HUD of the game. It may be a trivial matter but it indeed does add to the aesthetics of the game."

Incontrovertibly, Enemy Front fails to attain the graphical touchstone set by the game industry’s current game. Just so. Even with the drawbacks, I quite enjoy the game as it is. There were times when I felt frustration as to the game lacking the necessary pre-requisites, but eventually I was engrossed enough to not mind that.

The game’s soundtrack is brilliant and enrapturing and gels in with the theme of the game flawlessly. The story of the game is a little different with a solid gameplay. One thing that I really found appealing was the HUD of the game. It may be a trivial matter but it indeed does add to the aesthetics of the game.

It’s definitely not a must play game, but if you’re into FPS games, are a fan of Nazi killin and the World Wars in general, this game is not like to disappoint, if you willingly forget that the game has been made on the CryEngine 3.

CI Games’ Enemy Front will be arriving in India 10 days after releasing worldwide. It will be out on June 20th for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, retailing for Rs. 2999 on the former two platforms and Rs. 1499 for the latter.

Enemy Front will be a significantly different experience from CI Games’ other shooters. It takes place in World War II but will feature a stronger narrative told in flashbacks and feature different means to complete missions. You can either snipe enemies or go head on with the run and gun approach.

You’ll also have the ability to take a stealthy approach and take part in sabotage missions. The campaign will take you across Europe, including Norway and Poland, and will see you fighting alongside Resistance fighters in order to take down the Nazis.

Have you gotten your hands on Enemy Front yet? What are your thoughts on the game thus far? Let us know in the comments.

Enemy Front, the CryEngine 3 fueled World War II shooter by CI games and Bandai Namco for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, has finally released today after a series of unexpected delays that saw it being pushed back from its initial projected release. And while it’s good news that the game is finally out, the bad news is it came out at the worst possible time, landing right in the middle of E3 week. So… yeah, anyone who was hoping for this game to spark a revival of World War II themed shooters in the market? That might not happen anymore, since this game is just likely to get lost in the rush of E3.

In addition to the game’s intense and engaging (and heavily marketed) single player campaign, there will also be a variety of multiplayer modes that will support up to 12 players online, although again, their success might be compromised by this game’s unfortunate release date.

Hopefully, I’m wrong and the game still manages to do well. From everything I have seen of it, it looks like a true work of passion.

Check out how multiplayer works in the upcoming WWII shooter.

Bandai Namco Games America and CI Games have released a new trailer for Enemy Front, it’s upcoming “modern WWII” shooter but instead of the campaign, we get a look at how the multiplayer will function. Multiplayer supports up to 12 players and includes assaults, sniping and capturing different points across different European battlefields. Check it out above.

The main meat of Enemy Front is the single-player campaign in which you’ll play as war correspondent Robert Hawkins as he works with the Resistance to topple the Nazis in France, Germany, Norway and Poland. You’ll have a chance to snipe, sabotage or use stealth in order to get through missions. If you want to fire your way through various missions, you’re fully capable of doing that as well.

Enemy Front will be releasing June 10th on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Let us know what you think of the multiplayer trailer in the comments below.

Join the Resistance and the end the Nazi threat in CI Games' shooter.

Foul events are afoot in the 1940s and Hitler is up to no good. No, this isn’t the plot to Wolfenstein: The New Order. Instead, this is how Enemy Front, developed by CI Games and published by Bandai Namco Games America, starts off. You’ll be playing as war correspondent Robert Hawkins but you won’t be looking for that next Pulitzer. You’ll be fighting alongside Resistance solders and taking on the Nazis across France, Germany, Poland and many more locations during World War II. Check out the story trailer for the game to learn more.

Unlike that other WWII shooter that CI Games is known for, Enemy Front will offer you a wider variety of choices with which to take down the Nazis. You can use stealth, sabotage, sniping or just go in guns blazing. The game’s story takes place in flashbacks and hopefully it doesn’t echo Tarantino’s default ending.

Enemy Front will release on June 10th for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Pick it up at GameStop for the Special Edition package which includes the M1 Garand, Webley Pistol, exclusive DLC, a new mission “Raid on St. Nazaire” and the game’s soundtrack for $49.99.
