Whether it's excellent combat, top-notch story-telling, extensive build-crafting, or all three, these action RPGs deliver the goods.

Role-playing game fans have had it pretty good over the years, and among the many flourishing sub-genres, action RPGs have consistently offered some of the best experiences. Even with the many titles integrating RPG mechanics into their makeup – be it through loot chases or stats – there are plenty of standouts. Check out our picks for the 30 best action RPGs of all time, starting with:

30. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Don’t Nod’s second major action RPG, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden was released early last year, and it turned out to be a way better experience than Vampyr. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden was an excellent action role playing game with plenty to do with story being its main focus. Throughout the game’s narrative, players would have to make tough decisions which can result in any of the five endings.

The Xbox 360 was Microsoft's first major success in the console space and offered some excellent first-party and third-party titles.

The Xbox 360 is when Microsoft became a major player in the console space, with a larger outreach than its predecessor and three solid flagship franchises in Halo, Forza and Gears of War. While it suffered from issues like the Red Ring of Death in the early going – to say nothing of the later Kinect era – the seventh generation console still supported some amazing games in its lifespan. Let’s look at 15 of the best here.

Grand Theft Auto 5

Rockstar Games’ most successful title, Grand Theft Auto 5 redefined how detailed and lifelike open-world games could be. On top of its gorgeous visuals and intricate world, it pushed the boundaries of the franchise’s established formula with three protagonists, heists, activities like sports, hunting and racing, and memorable side stories. The fact that it achieved all of this on seventh-gen console hardware is a feat, that too without considering GTA Online.

These reactive game worlds will always live on in our memories.

The power of player agency is something that games have often utilized to elevate experiences over the years, and that’s something that can take many forms. Something that we don’t see too often is game worlds reacting to and changing in response to what the player does in truly meaningful ways, but when it does happen in a game, it’s hard not to be impressed by it. Here, we’re going to talk about a few games that did just that.

DEATH STRANDING

This was probably the most obvious choice for a list such as this one. Death Stranding is built all around the idea of players’ actions and their cooperation having a significant impact on the game’s world. What was once a barren wasteland might look entirely different based on what players were doing. A once-deserted landscape might have a long highway stretched over it now. Mountains that were once desolate and almost impassable might have networks of ziplines scattered across peaks and valleys. It’s very effectively done, and adds so much to the gameplay experience.

Whether it's real-time hack and slash action, looter shooters or big budget open world titles, these action RPGs are the creme of the crop.

Ever since the release of Dragon Slayer in 1984, the action RPG genre has grown by leaps and bounds throughout the decades. Various sub-genres and franchises have been born, each presenting their own compelling combat loops and gameplay systems. Let’s take a look at 30 of the best action RPGs of all time.

Dark Souls Remastered

More than a decade after its original release, it’s still impressive how much Dark Souls has influenced gaming. Dark Souls Remastered is a fairly straightforward enhanced edition, providing a 60 FPS frame rate, higher resolutions, and improved lighting and alpha effects among other minor improvements. But the core of the title, from the excellent pacing and pitch-perfect design, the madness of levels like Sen’s Fortress and Blighttown, and the wonder upon finding Anor Londo remain to this day, as does the solid combat and boss design.

As fun as these games could be, their conclusions inspired more than a bit of healthy debate from fans. Take a look at what made them so divisive here.

You can’t always have the perfect ending. Whether it’s a difference in vision or expectations, some games just don’t end how you’d like them to. But while some endings are received poorly by some fans, others may find them to be somewhat endearing. Let’s take a look at 10 video game endings that divided their fanbases. Spoilers abound so be warned.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor

That Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor’s story veers off course from the original lore is one thing but the climax comes out of left field. When finally facing the Black Hand, Celebrimbor is separated from Talion, the Black Hand commits suicide, Sauron is reincarnated in his body and Talion suddenly has to fight him in a QTE battle. Got all that? Once he succeeds, Celebrimbor wants to peace out but Talion wants to make a new Ring of Power, thus setting up the events of Shadow of War. Overall, it felt like a strange way to set up a sequel rather than provide any real closure for Talion but he still got his revenge. So there’s that.

While Xbox Game Pass has been praised for providing a wide selection of titles for both PC and Xbox subscribers, it also supports Android gaming via the cloud. This allows for playing big-name games on tablets and phones. But what if you wanted to turn your phone into a retro gaming device? Microsoft has you covered.

On Xbox Wire, the company announced that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers could now play 16 Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on Android phones and tablets via backwards compatible. Check out all of the games below with some having touch controls enabled.

Banjo-Kazooie

Banjo-Tooie

Double Dragon Neon

Fable 2

Fallout: New Vegas

Gears of War 2

Gears of War 3

Gears of War: Judgment

Jetpac Refuelled (touch controls enabled)

Kameo

Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark Zero

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

Viva Piñata (touch controls enabled)

Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise (touch controls enabled)

More games will be “coming soon” to the service, expanding on the retro functionality even more. Xbox Game Pass continues to grow with more games added each month. Even big new releases like People Can Fly’s Outriders are joining the service at launch. What the future holds for retro games remains to be seen but being able to take some of them on the go is a nice bonus.

Pulling off a great ending in video games is harder than you'd think.

It’s easy to underestimate just how important an ending can be for a game. The overall experience could be fantastic but have an underwhelming ending, thus tainting an overall great game. Bad endings in video games are nothing new but there are other ways to mess up a conclusion. Let’s take a look at 15 annoying things about endings that more than a few players will have dealt with.

DLC Required

Remember how Frank West valiantly sacrificed himself at the end of Dead Rising 4 so that Vicky and Brad could escape? Yeah, that’s not the “true” ending. Purchasing the Frank Rising DLC reveals that West actually became a zombie, got better and then maybe escaped (or not, depending on your choices). Unfortunately this wouldn’t be the first time that a game’s “true” ending would be gated behind DLC – see Asura’s Wrath, also conveniently published by Capcom.

Sometimes, we all need to experience the power of the dark side.

The very existence of video games is predicated on choice, in some form of another. While some games present choices to players in how they want to play, others do so more directly, by letting players decide the direction the narrative takes, or how events unfold. Sometimes, what consequences those choices will lead to is made instantly clear, while other times, those consequences don’t rear their heads until much later in the experience. In this feature, we will be taking a look at fifteen times when video games presented players with good or bad choices, and how they responded if players took the latter.

There will be spoilers ahead for all games we speak of, so if we start talking about any game you don’t want spoilers for, skip ahead to the next entry.

GENOPHAGE (MASS EFFECT 3)

The first act of the final game in the trilogy revolved around the conflict between the turians, salarians, and krogans beginning to resolve itself, as in the face of a much greater threat in the form of the Reapers, an agreement was reached for curing the genophage, the biological weapon that almost drove the krogans to extinction, in exhange for the krogans’ support. Commander Shepard was soon presented with the choice of switching out the real cure with a fake one, to keep the genophage intact and deceive the krogans- if players took that choice, not only were the consequences implicitly disastrous for an entire race, it could also lead to Shepard having to gun down Mordin Solus, one of the best characters in the series.

15 times the big boss took a vacation at the wrong time

You’ve vanquished the creatures of the night, prevented a secret society from enslaving humanity, and barely averted nuclear war from breaking out worldwide. Congratulations never feel quite earned however until you’ve taken down the big bad responsible for the whole ordeal. The final boss fight has been a staple ever since video games began to have endings at all with King Koopa holding the princess in another castle, but with games pushing into new and exciting narrative territory, we’re seeing more titles go without that climactic final set piece. Or at least the final set pieces they do offer aren’t against a singular antagonist, as it traditional. Spoilers ahead, but please do share your favourites in the comments.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

While the mid-game confrontation against Metal Gear Sahalanthropus is an epic battle across Afghanistan against a giant mech in that kooky Kojima fashion, there is after all, over half the game to go once Venom Snake and his Diamond Dogs take down the machinations of Skull Face and his strange vendetta against English. Chapter 2 conversely doesn’t have quite the same impact when you face down a few larger conflicts at seemingly random points in a casual playthrough. The ending of the game sends our heads spinning for different reasons, but the lack of those amazing Kojima final bosses makes us wonder if Hideo was really the man who sold the world.

Sometimes an ending makes you think. These 15 times made us just think "what?"

Always leave them wanting more, they say. The ending of a game is a precious thing. After all your hours of effort put into seeing through the latest AAA blockbuster hit, we all hope for a satisfying conclusion that leaves us excited to see what’s to come, or wraps everything up neatly from a years long series. Though some of those more artsy games with large stories to tell can sometimes be hard to figure out, leaving dangling questions sometimes we don’t get an answer to. From the really deep endings that demand analysis and still make little sense to the ones that were just out to lunch, we’re here today to talk about 15 Video game endings that raised more questions than answers. Oh, and spoilers…obviously.

The Order: 1886

The Order: 1886 had a fantastic premise when it was first announced, and if the entire thing wasn’t over in a totally linear 6 hours, perhaps it would have been better received. Just as the story gets going with the hero Galahad, who learns the terrible truth that the head of his order has known the truth of the Lycans all along and harboured one as his own son, forced to be a martyr to keep the order stable, the game just cuts out into lame sequel bait and we’re left asking where the last 6 hours of our lives went.
