The start of the 3D era was a time of janky platforming controls and jagged visuals enveloped in fog. Even classics like <em>Mario 64</em> can be rough with today’s lens. But as soon as devs got accustomed to 3D tech, games started looking good again. Though, not all played good. Many PS3-era games struggled to break past repetitive hack and slash mechanics, while others leaned on gimmicks. Others feel fresh and intuitive, sometimes rivaling modern game releases. Here are 15 older games that still rock in 2025, both visually and mechanically.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Dead Space</h2>
<p>If there’s one game that hardly needs a remake today, it’s the original <em>Dead Space</em>. Don’t get me wrong, the remake is awesome, but the 2008 original still holds up remarkably well. The graphics were at the top of the industry and still look amazing today. But it’s the way the atmosphere was crafted that particularly leaves a lasting impression on us. The diagetic HUD is partly to thank for the top-notch immersion, but the Necromorph designs are especially timeless in their ability to send a chill down gamers’ spines. <em>Dead Space</em> also doesn’t have an ounce of jank in its DNA; it feels remarkably precise and intuitive to play today. We’re still seeing tons of triple-A games use that iconic over the shoulder perspective, and we have the original <em>Dead Space</em> to thank for convincing us that it’s awesome.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Crysis</h2>

<p>Back in 2007, <em>Crysis</em> was the rosetta stone benchmark for PC performance. Today, maybe not as much, but it can still be confused as a modern game. It was one of the games boasting advanced volumetric lighting and crazy far draw distances, and the lush jungle environments made for an attractive display piece to show off that tech. Crysis was also pretty dang modern with its gameplay systems. The campaign let players freely explore the tropical sandbox with its wide-linear design. Like the studio’s <em>Far Cry</em> titles, a smorgasbord of vehicles were up for the taking to accomplish missions in varying ways. If the day/cycle or gunplay didn’t impress, the visuals sure did, and continue to.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Red Dead Redemption</h2>
<p>The year was 2010, gamers were absolutely starving for an immersive wild west game, and Rockstar was the one studio poised to do it. They already released <em>Red Dead Revolver</em> in 2004 and had the technology to finally meet the setting’s great potential. And that they did. <em>Red Dead Redemption</em>’s sprawling open world is filled with fun activities and more interesting personalities than you can fit in a stage coach. It’s Rockstar’s best pre-<em>GTA 5</em> game to return to have good time without much friction. And it’s highly recommended players go back to this gem to understand <em>Red Dead Redemption 2</em>, as it functions as a sequel to that game. It’s not hard to fall in love with it today given the tight gunplay and solid graphics.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Max Payne 3</h2>
<p><em>Max Payne 3</em> is the second pre-<em>GTA 5</em> Rockstar game that’s easiest to return to today. The big selling point is the bullet-time mechanic from previous entries being turned up a couple notches. There’s not a single game that I can think of that does slow-mo shootouts as well as <em>Max Payne 3</em>. The modern third-person shooting feels great to control, and carefully lining up slow-mo dive shots is a joy. Being the Rockstar game that it is, cinematics are top-notch as well, with zero loading between cutscenes and player-controlled action sections. A port to today&#8217;s platforms would be appreciated, but the graphics actually hold up just fine without need for an upgrade.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Dying Light 1</h2>
<p><em>Dying Light</em> achieved something few games outside <em>Assassin’s Creed</em> were willing to do at the time, and that’s a realistic and smooth parkour system. What’s more, you can parkour across pretty much any building or object in the large open world. Besides the advanced parkouring, the game also boasted dynamic day/night lighting that still impresses today. <em>Dying Light</em> is the newest game on this list, but the dark atmosphere and gritty story have an edge over its sequel, <em>Dying Light 2</em>, making it well worth playing 10 years later, especially to see Kyle Crane’s earlier adventures.</p>

<p>David Cage games were always ahead of their time, but it wasn’t until <em>Heavy Rain</em> until they started being legitimately fun to play on top of that. You can probably thank <em>Heavy Rain</em> for PlayStation’s recent narrative emphasis. The game was largely an interactive choose your own adventure movie. But unlike TellTale’s string of narrative games, <em>Heavy Rain</em> had truly spectacular graphics that many felt were lifelike at the time. The game still holds up today, partly thanks to its simple gameplay mechanics (it’s hard to make quick time events janky) and high budget graphics and acting talent.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Ninja Gaiden Black</h2>
<p>And then there’s rarities like <em>Ninja Gaiden Black</em> which boast deeply technical gameplay that still feels smooth today. For being a 20 year old game, it sure does feel fluid and intuitive to pull off combos, thanks in part to great optimization. It also holds up to current trends in game. <em>Ninja Gaiden Black</em> was notorious for being one of the most difficult games at the time, but it fits well beside contemporary titles like <em>Elden Ring</em> and <em>Hollow Knight Silksong</em> with its difficulty. With distinct art direction and stylishly detailed character models, it’s a game that’s still easy on the eyes.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Borderlands 2</h2>
<p>Many were rubbing their eyes when <em>Borderlands 4</em> was revealed. Accusations were thrown around that it looked like the previous <em>Borderlands</em> games, and they’re not too far off. <em>Borderlands</em> has maintained a bold cartoonish look since the first game, but it’s really the second entry that polished and solidified its identity. Just like the graphics, the gunplay holds up remarkably well today. And with memorable villains like Handsome Jack, the story remains the best the series has ever seen.</p>

<p>If you can get a hold of a rare copy of DriveClub, do yourself a favor and grab it. The PS4 exclusive was notable for its photo-realistic rain effects and grounded yet approachable driving mechanics. I regularly see racing fans comparing modern driving games’ weather effects to DriveClub. That’s how dang good the game looked. While the online component can’t be experienced today, the single player career has plenty of races and challenges to warrant the price of admission. And with a simcade handling model that’s not too intimidating to learn yet difficult to master, you’ll find yourself glued to the rainsoaked windshield for many hours even amid today&#8217;s racers.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Far Cry 2</h2>
<p>I know, I know, it’s easy to overlook <em>Far Cry 2</em> now that we have over six entries, but it does some pretty unique things. A number of playable and non-playable mercenaries can be rescued and hired to go on missions with you. These teammates can be permanently killed if they’re not rescued or healed in time, making it easy to feel attached to them. Other than the buddy system, the game just looks great, featuring a robust African open world environment. If you’re a fan of the <em>Far Cry</em> series, the second game is a must-play that holds up perfectly fine today.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim</h2>

<p>Ever since <em>Skyrim</em>’s release in 2011, players have memed it to death. One of the most popular memes, that being its constant string of re-releases, still finds itself with legs even now. It’s the game that refuses to die, whether it be because of its wealth of quests, role-playing possibilities, or extensive mod support. Even without any mods, it still looks and plays fantastic. Sure, you’ll encounter a handful of backwards-flying dragons, but even the bugs are worth experiencing in this beloved open-world RPG.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Batman Arkham City</h2>
<p>2011 was a good time for games in general. <em>Arkham City</em> also came out in that year and it represents Rocksteady’s zenith. <em>Arkham City</em> is their most beloved game for a reason; it’s got the tightest example of their signature freeflow combat, some of the most intricate and addictive world design, and some amazing characterization. A lot of late PS3/Xbox 360 games still manage to look good today, but <em>Arkham City</em> looks and plays downright flawless.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Uncharted 2: Among Thieves</h2>
<p>Speaking of timeless PS3 titles, <em>Uncharted 2</em> just refuses to feel outdated. The rollercoaster pacing and attention to detail continues to be emulated and studied today. Even detractors of <em>Uncharted</em> 1’s gameplay love the way <em>Uncharted 2</em> improved aiming and enemy encounter design. If you want to see what makes the <em>Uncharted</em> series so special, check out <em>Uncharted 2</em>, it sets up the rest of the games wonderfully and plays like a modern-day adventure title.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots</h2>
<p>But if there’s any PS3 game that went above and beyond its contemporaries, it’s <em>MGS 4</em>. In true Kojima fashion, the storytelling is outfitted with a ridiculous amount of bells and whistles, perhaps even overstaying its time in the spotlight just a bit (looking at you hour-long cutscene). Motion capture was some of the most advanced for the time, and the voice talent gave Hollywood a run for their money. Many fans even say the gameplay is the best the series has ever had. It’s also the only game in the <em>MGS</em> series besides <em>Peace Walker</em> to feature the Psyche Gauge. Stealth was emphasized because killing spiked the gauge, making Snake more prone to shake while shooting. Now if only we’d finally get a remaster or port of <em>MGS 4</em> so more players could experience it.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">The Last of Us</h2>

It represents Naughty Dog at their absolute peak.<em> The Last of Us</em> shocked just about everyone with its realistic graphics and mo-cap in 2013. And the brutal melee takedowns and hard-hitting story kept us hooked ever since. It’s hard to overstate just how good the original game plays all these years later, which is why all these remasters and remakes seem somewhat redundant to many fans. The original holds up so well today, and with a story so iconic and gripping, we won’t see the last of <em>The Last of Us</em> anytime soon.</p>

<p>There isn’t a heap of enemy variety in Nathan Drake’s first outing in <em>Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune</em>. Mercs and pirate-types aside, the monster-like infected Descendants at least provide a terrifying alternative when they first arrive. Their persistence does start to wain though, but still, the game excels as a piece of cinematic storytelling more than anything, and the Descendants provide a firm narrative backbone to support ultimate final boss Atoq Navarro’s stance that the pathogen which formed the Descendants is far more valuable than any golden treasure. Drake and Navarro’s showdown is more a stand-off than battle; Drake waits for him to reload, edges closer in three movements, a brief bit of hand-to-hand, QTE, done.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Far Cry 2</em></strong></p>
<p>Yet another excellent game that doesn’t really have a boss battle. It has enemies, of course, some weaker, some stronger, but in a genre where there are at least one or two boss fights, <em>Far Cry 2</em> stands alone. The assassination of the game’s faction bosses and old lieutenants is rudimentary, with primary antagonist The Jackal – the arms dealer whom your mercenary was originally hired to kill – serving more as a narrative think-piece as the story goes on. He’s someone believed to be bad by profiting from death, but that’s exactly what you do in order to get close to him. A final showdown wouldn’t make sense in this context.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Prey (2017)</em></strong></p>

<p><em>Prey (2017)</em> has no boss fights whatsoever. Sure, the substantially dangerous form of Typhon the Nightmare perpetually antagonises the player throughout the game but the fact killing it is optional, either slay or evade, means it can’t be considered a true boss fight. It’ll respawn anyway, whatever you do. The most humungous of all Typhon, the Apex, doesn’t need to be fought in the traditional sense either. There are two ways to kill it: one, self-destruct Talos I, and two, detonate the Coral to destroy the Apex without damaging Talos I. Even central antagonist Walther Dahl doesn’t need to be killed, with distinct outcomes depending on whether you choose to kill or stun him.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Deus Ex</em></strong></p>
<p>In <em>Deus Ex</em>, you will engage enemies on the elite side of difficulty but the game’s usual fayre of tactical, first-person combat involving stealth, cover, and hit-and-run strategy is consistent with regular hordes of enemies as it is the elite. A principal idea – and a relatively ground-breaking one for the time – in <em>Deus Ex</em> is for the player to spend their time developing their stealth skills alongside augmenting their character’s nano-tech. It’s a system seen today in games like <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em>, a multi-directional upgrade tree that can tune player-characters towards damage absorbing human tanks, weapons specialists, or hacking and lock picking experts. There just aren’t any major bosses with which to test your builds and skills, but <em>Deus Ex</em> still shines as a bright forbearer for dystopian RPGs to this day regardless.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>The Last of Us</em></strong></p>

Plainly, the studio just isn’t that fond of boss battles, and this is true of their zombie-ravaged post-apocalyptic survive-a-thon series (the horrifying Rat King from <em>The Last of Us 2</em> aside). Joel and Ellie’s first outing sees the pair face-off in arena-type locales against overpowered enemies – the bloaters in the school gymnasium and the creepy hotel basement spring to mind – but these are strong, recurring enemies consistent with the timeframe in which the host has been infected, according to <em>The Last of Us</em> lore. The one possible exception in is Ellie’s battle with David inside the burning restaurant. It’s a one-on-one battle of wits, but Ellie at the time doesn’t have any of her inventory so it can be argued this encounter is not a true boss fight.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Max Payne 2</em></strong></p>
<p>Remedy Entertainment’s bullet-time third-person shooter started out with numerous boss fights; mobsters, in the first <em>Max Payne</em>, who could withstand heaps of punishment. <em>Max Payne’s</em> second entry largely did away with this formula. Leader of the Squeaky Cleaning Company Kaufman was a tougher than usual foe, but still didn’t take too many bullets before going down. The game’s final battle against Vladimir Lem plays out more like a puzzle encounter than a one-on-one fight of brute force. Max must shoot the legs of the scaffolding Vlad is standing on then take out the support of the spire above him before being able to target him directly. The final phase is akin to a boss fight, to be fair, but it’s barely a test.</p>

<p>Like Naughty Dog, Rockstar are a studio which by-and-large eschew boss battles in their open world games. <em>Red Dead Redemption</em> is no different; there are no major boss fights to speak of. Central antagonists Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella, and Dutch van der Linde whom John Marston is forced into hunting down across the vast Wild West don’t have final encounters resembling boss fights. The only encounter close to a boss fight is Jack Marston’s duel with Bureau of Investigation ringleader Edgar Ross, but this is just a duel – a dishonourable one for Ross – but a commonplace duel all the same. This encounter only has notoriety for the gravitas of revenge attuned to it by John’s son Jack.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Grand Theft Auto IV</em></strong></p>
<p>The only conceivable boss fight in <em>Grand Theft Auto</em> history is the showdown with Big Smoke in <em>GTA: San Andreas</em>. All other fights, even against central antagonists, are gunfights or chases against narratively significant adversaries, but they’re not stronger than regular enemies. Niko’s final showdown and execution of Pegorino, accessible via the revenge ending option, is a thrilling chase sequence rather than one-on-one boss fight. Prior to this, Niko’s final encounter with major tormentor Dimitri Rascalov involves sneaking through the decks and cargo holds of the Platypus, with a brief cutscene emerging once Niko has wiped out all Rascalov’s goons.</p>

<p>Yeah, you’re probably thinking that <em>Alien: Isolation</em> is a game with a boss encounter; the persistently stalking Xenomorph is surely the boss, right? Well, yeah, maybe. <p>The ways in which <em>System Shock</em> was ahead of the curve are numerous: it’s exploration of prescient themes centring on artificial intelligence, transhumanism, ascension, and the human soul is still grimly thought-provoking; its physics engine revolutionised how objects act in 3D spaces; its morally grey antagonist grounded its fantastical setting; it’s emphasis on player choice and options to avoid combat via ground-breaking hacking abilities. <em>System Shock</em> is an all-time classic, inspiring <em>Prey</em>, <em>Dishonored</em>, <em>Portal</em>, to name a few.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Outcast</em></strong></p>
<p>A fully explorable open world appearing two years before <em>Grand Theft Auto III</em> isn’t why <em>Outcast</em> is ahead of its time. No, this 1999 sci-fi cult classic delivered immersion by the bucketload, far above anything that had come before. NPC conversation was integral to the narrative, but each had daily routines to follow, opinions on each other, and opinions on you the player. An early example of a reputation system, NPCs will help or hinder you based on how well you’ve treated them. Enemy soldiers are progressively weakened by lack of food or resources too, the result of activities you complete for the leaders of each region.</p>

It’s gorgeous grassland plains, swamps, and misty mountaintops encouraged horseback exploration; fast travel was not the optimal way to get around. Rockstar deliberately culled the pace of <em>Red Dead’s</em> sequel, stuffing the open world with a smorgasbord of side activities and random encounters. Open world games released today are struggling to reach the levels of freedom <em>Red Dead Redemption 2</em> presented.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Mirror’s Edge</em></strong></p>
<p>Flowstate is a remarkable thing when it happens in games. The sense of body and mind working in tandem, fluidly, uninterrupted. Games had toyed with parkour before <em>Mirror’s Edge</em> but none elicited the serene flowstate <em>Mirror’s Edge</em> did. This is in large part to its first-person perspective, it’s almost texture-less clean lines and minimal, distraction free colour palette switching between bright white and bold primary colours. <em>Dying Light</em> comes close, but the innovativeness of <em>Mirror’s Edge</em> is tough to beat.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Metal Gear Solid</em></strong></p>
<p>An absolute genre-defining masterpiece, <em>Metal Gear Solid</em> changed perceptions of what video games could be via its unashamedly cinematic approach to storytelling, it’s ground-breaking stealth gameplay, and ingenious fourth wall breaking shenanigans. Never had a video game toyed with the player as much as <em>Metal Gear Solid</em>; etching Meryl’s codec frequency into the game’s physical CD case, or – most famously – the Psycho Mantis battle requiring players’ switch controller ports to evade his mind-reading ability.</p>

There really was nothing like it at the time. A wholly unique experience with an ending, like some of the world’s greatest art, wide open to interpretation.</p>

It’s incredible how much destruction developer Volition managed to build into its gameplay, and whilst there was a multiplayer component to the game the single player campaign was treated to this bar-raising destruction tech too. Players could reshape the world around them with unparalleled freedom. See a locked door? Blast a hole in the surrounding rock. Want to infiltrate a guarded building? Fashion underground tunnels with rocket launchers. Prior games included scripted destruction, but <em>Red</em> <em>Faction</em> was the first to grant players pure unscripted world-altering capabilities.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Shenmue</em></strong></p>
<p>Sure, <em>Shenmue’s</em> stately slice of Japanese life divides fans and critics to this day, but the developer’s ambition for what they hoped would become a sprawling series was certainly ahead of its time. Introducing the concept of open world game design to mass audiences (well, Dreamcast players at least), <em>Shenmue</em> heightened immersion through its day and night cycles, NPCs with jobs and routines, and dynamic weather. The interactivity inherent in its detailed world cemented <em>Shenmue</em> as a trailblazer too, ranging from mundanely examining the objects of a kitchen drawer to hitting the arcades for some vintage game time.</p>

<p><em>Prototype’s</em> Alex Mercer is the perfect anti-hero. It’s as simple as that. So many powers and abilities are stuffed into his skillset that there was no more powerful a feeling possible in games than raising utter carnage in downtown Manhattan and barely feeling a scratch from an army desperate to stop you. In blending shapeshifting, superhero-esque aerial acrobatics, offensive and defensive body augmentations, thermal vision, guns, tanks, and helicopters, Radical Entertainment risked <em>Prototype</em> being a sludge of mechanics. Instead, <em>Prototype</em> is a blast; combining so many combat mechanics seamlessly truly was an achievement ahead of its time.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Battlezone</em></strong></p>
<p>Never had a game merged first-person action, real-time strategy, base building, and tank simulation as cohesively as 1998’s <em>Battlezone</em>. Whilst the similar-in-scope <em>Uprising: Join or Die</em> released a year earlier it didn’t have the same sense of finesse that Activision’s effort exuded. <em>Battlezone</em> dripped in atmosphere, featured dynamic missions inside an engaging dual-perspective campaign, and – crucially given its melding of disparate genres – a sleek interface innovative for its simplicity.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>RAGE</strong> </em></p>
<p>You can debate until you’re blue in the face on the memorability of <em>RAGE</em>. It brought legendary developer id Software back from the brink of mediocrity, but it’s shooting, premise, enemies, story – all middle-of-the-road at least. A solid 7/10. <em>RAGE</em> though had an ace up its sleeve: megatexturing. This tech wasn’t new at the time, but thanks to game engine id Tech 5 <em>RAGE’s</em> environment artists were able to build in an endless stream of unique textures. Dynamic scaling based on PC capability kept the game running at 60fps too; another feature prevalent nowadays but none-too-common back in 2011.</p>

<p>1993’s <em>Syndicate</em> put you in command of four trenchcoated, mirror-shaded cyborgs undertaking a corporation’s nefarious dealings via the trigger of a minigun. Gameplaywise, you’d take to the streets – early examples of living cities – to assassinate, coerce, rescue, or destroy, depending on your objective and whims. There was intelligence beneath the bloodshed too, a satirical mirror exposing the tunnel vision of rampant consumerism. <em>Grand Theft Auto</em> took these themes and ran with it, but <em>Syndicate</em> was the first to do it.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Far Cry 2</em></strong></p>
<p>If <em>Far Cry 2</em> were released today, it might be criticised for an overly minimalist approach to open world game design that’s become much more commonplace than it was back in 2008 when it originally released. Thing is, it’s <em>Far Cry 2</em> that arguably started this trend. A true pinnacle of emergent gameplay, zones aren’t acquired like a shopping list and NPCs don’t tend to function as quest givers. Instead, it’s up to you to head into the bush a cause your own trouble, but beware as guns often malfunction, exploded vehicles cause rampant bushfires, healing is strictly limited. Far Cry 2 had the confidence here to blend FPS with survival mechanics, with <em>Metal Gear Solid V, Fallout 4</em>, and <em>The Forest</em> to name a few taking many leaves out of its book.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Silent Hill 2</em></strong></p>
<p>Dealing with mature, taboo, brushed under the carpet subject matter in such visceral ways; intrinsically linking a character’s innermost desires and torment to gameplay, to monsters encountered; in crafting an atmosphere so noxious it chokes you – these are all reasons why <em>Silent Hill 2</em> is an ahead of its time masterpiece, and stands the test of time some 22 years later. In a way, <em>Silent Hill 2</em> is experimental; for one, its story is told extremely subtly. A very hands-off approach which many developers, plus Konami themselves, haven’t learned from.</p>

<p>The guerrilla warfare aspect and lack of a radar in <em>Metal Gear Solid 3</em> turned sniping into a fairly important mechanic. Rifles could be used to scout ahead and pick off foes from a safe distance, after all though you still had to be careful about leaving bodies. The true test came when facing The End – if you actually tried fighting him, then tracing his position and not getting caught out was key, especially with how incredible his aim could be. This also opened up a number of strategies like capturing and releasing his parrot while using the directional microphone to find his position.</p>
