With this feature, we'll be highlighting 20 major upcoming horror games of 2026 and beyond that genre fans should be watching closely.

Horror games are entering a bold new era. With more powerful hardware and increasingly ambitious developers, the genre is expanding far beyond simple jump scares into deeply psychological, cinematic, and mechanically inventive territory. From atmospheric slow burns and survival horror revivals to co-op chaos and narrative-driven nightmares, 2026 and beyond is stacked with plenty of games that are worth looking out for. To that end, we are taking a look at 20 new horror games that look ready to keep players sleeping with the lights on.

Silent Hill Townfall

Silent Hill has made a grand comeback as of late, and Townfall takes the iconic franchise in a more experimental direction – focusing heavily on psychological storytelling and building atmospheric tension. Early teasers suggest a strongly narrative-driven experience that leans into surreal horror and several plot twists, and that will be coupled with thrilling exploration and mind-bending puzzles – and it’s definitely one of the hottest games of the near future.

If the annoying grain filter has been stopping you from heading to Minakami Village on console, this one is going to be good news to you.

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have put out a tweet addressing complaints about a grain filter that’s drawn the ire of many players diving into the demo of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly on consoles. A new toggle is in the works, allowing anybody unhappy to disable it completely, experiencing the game’s visuals in their full quality.

We touched upon the filter in our own review, lamenting the lack of an option to disable it. While the PC version of the game does indeed allow you to do so, it was a baffling omission on consoles. It’s heartening to see the developers acting quickly to ensure this is addressed as soon as possible, ahead of the game’s March 12 release.

The remake’s demo has been largely well-received aside from a few complaints, with the grain filter featuring prominently among them. However, there has been no indication that the option to disable it is heading to the Switch 2, the last remaining platform where the game is playable. It certainly would be welcome to see the revamped visuals and lighting in all their glory, irrespective of the platform it’s on, after all.

You can check out the tweet below as you wait for the game to drop if you’re thinking of joining Mio and Mayu on a chilling adventure that takes them to some very dark places.

With this feature, we will be taking a look at 20 of the best horror games that continue to linger in your memories and haunt your nights long after the credits roll.

Horror games have a unique way of crawling under your skin – not just through jump scares but through appropriate atmosphere, interesting storytelling, or even the creeping dread of the unknown. Over the years, the genre has evolved from relatively simple survival experiences to deeply psychological journeys that use tricks like mechanical horror or the inherent fear of the unknown to create experiences that linger in our memories long after the credits roll. With this feature, we’re counting down 20 of the best horror games of all time, each offering a distinctive brand of terror that lingers long after the screen fades to black.

Silent Hill f

Silent Hill f takes the long-running horror franchise in a completely new direction, setting its story in 1960s Japan instead of the fog-covered town for the better. Silent Hill f expertly blends psychological horror with grotesque body transformations, crafting a disturbing experience that is both tragic and mesmerizing. Every frame oozes dread, and the hauntingly beautiful visuals serve as a chilling contrast to the decay creeping beneath the surface.

Whether it’s an appetite for adrenaline, an addiction for tension, or sadistic curiosity, horror games continue to scare us.

Establishing how much fear can a game conjure in the name of entertainment is wholly subjective. Our nightmares aren’t collective. With this in mind, the top horror games on this list are deeply varied – cosmic nightmares, haunted houses, malevolence, gore, and hostility, it’s all here in ghoulish splendour. And, in a move which opens us up to rampant criticism, this rundown is presented in order, from chilling to terrifying.

Still Wakes the Deep

A shoo-in for scariest game of 2024 so far, Still Wakes the Deep duties you as electrician Caz aboard a bleak, ocean-rusting North Sea oil rig before an accident occurs and situations go awry. It’s best not to know too much before stepping aboard, but safe to say The Chinese Room have delivered an atmospheric horror for the ages, replete in equal measure dread and mystery.

We take a look back at the rich history of horror games and count down 30 of the best games the genre has to offer.

Horror games stand tall as one of the most popular genres in the medium, which sits at the top right besides first-person shooters and action adventures. Over the last few decades, countless developers have provided varied takes on a horror game ranging from psychological horror to survival horror and action horror among a slew of other subgenres. With this feature, we are taking a look back at the rich history of horror games and counting down 30 of the best horror games of all time

Resident Evil 2 Remake

Resident Evil 2 Remake is an excellent re-imagining of the survival horror classic, and it stands tall as one of the best remakes of recent memory. The game presents a striking rendition of the familiar Raccoon City, complete with new puzzles and third-person shooting mechanics that make this experience a lot different than the original. While the campaign is definitely on the shorter side, plenty of side content, including but not limited to Ghost Survivors, should keep you occupied for a long time.

They may not be as remembered by the vast majority as other classics, but these PlayStation 2 titles are still significant.

Among the hallowed eras of console gaming, the PlayStation 2 is considered one of the greatest. It brought us so many acclaimed titles in series like Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto – the list goes on.

However, several other titles, some underrated and others outright ignored, deserve to be remembered. It could be the port of a PC title or that one legendary movie tie-in that no one else remembers. Let’s dive into them.

The Thing

Trying to make an impact in the survival horror genre, especially with juggernauts like Silent Hill and Resident Evil around, is no easy task. Nevertheless, The Thing had interesting hooks, like the Fear/Trust system. If an NPC believes you were The Thing, they could attack, but even if unsure, they’d remain distrustful and ignore orders. They can also become scared, lash out, commit suicide or die from heart attacks. It wasn’t perfect, but The Thing presented a tense atmosphere with strong environmental variety.

These games use the best of atmosphere, writing, and direction to give players the scariest spooks in their starting minutes.

Horror games are dime a dozen, but few have openings that really unease the player from the outset. To that end, here are 15 of the best games that have scary openings.

The Evil Within 2

The Evil Within 2 is easily the best horror game that the studio has put out to date, and it features one of the scariest openings that’s sure to remain etched into your memory long after the credits roll. You start out in front of a flaming house, and upon entering you hear the screams of your beloved daughter. As you make your way through the rubble, you encounter Lily – who is enveloped in flames. She comes close and chokes you to death, wakes Sebastian up from this horrible nightmare, and kickstarts the narrative.

The upcoming Dead Space remake looks absolutely amazing, and we really hope that these games return with a similar treatment.

While there’s no shortage of new and interesting horror games coming in the near future, it’s only natural that we crave to see classics of the genre reappear with a fresh coat of paint. This is precisely why the upcoming Dead Space remake has been the subject of so much hype and anticipation, and also why Capcom has been hard at work on remakes of early Resident Evil games. Of course, we’d really like to see many other games receive the same treatment. To that effect, here are 15 horror games that we would like to see return as remakes.

The Evil Within

Tango Gameworks made a splashing debut with The Evil Within back in 2014, which went down as one of the best horror games of the generation. While the game is still playable by modern standards, the graphics and gameplay have started to show some noticeable cracks. As such, a modern remake with updated graphics and smoothed-out gameplay mechanics would really make fans want to re-experience the classic all over again.

No matter how much time passes or how often we revisit them, these 15 titles remain as scary now as they did back in the day.

The horror genre is in pretty good health these days with games like Resident Evil Village and Returnal seeing success. Meanwhile, indie titles like World of Horror, Little Nightmares, Mundaun and many more continue to garner attention. And while the genre has seen its ups and downs over the decades, there are plenty of classics that remain scary to this day. Let’s take a look at 15 of them here.

Silent Hill 2

Konami struck gold with Silent Hill when it was released in 1999 for the PlayStation One. However it would be the sequel, released a mere 19 months later, that cemented itself in the halls of horror gaming. Silent Hill 2 didn’t just give us iconic horrors like Pyramid Head – it explored the consequences of one’s actions, the confrontation of deep-seated trauma, and the manifestation of one’s inner nightmares. That it was impeccably paced, well-written and atmospheric as a whole also helped distinguish it among other classics.

There's just something about spooky scary spirits that gets us every time.

Do you like scary video games? Do you prefer the spookiness of the ethereal, the ghostly, the paranormal over everything else? Good news – there are plenty of games with paranormal happenings that will keep you spooked for a good long while. Let’s take a look at a few of them here.

Song of Horror

What if you faced a terrifying being that could also learn from your actions and plan accordingly? That’s The Presence, the antagonistic force of Song of Horror. The title features a number of characters, each exploring the house of Sebastian P. Husher and facing off against the terrifying Presence. When one character dies, the next continues the story, investigating in their own way. However, The Presence will learn from each incursion and hunt you down.
