Truly insurmountable odds.

Games often throw bosses at us that pose a true test of skill, but every so often, they even go a step beyond that. They pit us against bosses that are designed as impossible encounters, that more or less require you to lose, either as special encounters or story-related set-pieces. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at a few such boss encounters. Without further ado, let’s get started.

GENICHIRO ASHINA – TUTORIAL FIGHT (SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE)

Basically every boss fight in Sekiro can be a hopeless one depending on what kind of a player you are, but the tutorial boss fight against Genichiro Ashina in the opening minutes of the game is actually hopeless. It’s designed as a super-tough encounter, so the average player simply cannot get past it, and losing the fight leads to a a story cutscene where the Wolf’s arm gets cut off. It is technically possible to defeat Genichiro in this encounter, but all this does is give you a slightly altered cutscene, where your arm still ends up getting cut off.

The stuff of nightmares.

Seeing a massive, grotesque, hairy spider in real life would give you a heart attack, but seeing that same thing in a video game counts as an amazing experience. Thankfully, over the years game have provided us with plenty of nightmare fuel. In this feature, we’re going to take a look at fifteen of the scariest creatures and entities in games. Given the vast pool of options available to us, it’s a given that we’re going to miss out on many terrifying creatures, so if any of your favourites get left out, sound off in the comments below.

With that out of the way, let’s get started.

PYRAMID HEAD (SILENT HILL 2)

Silent Hill 2 has the legacy of being one of the greatest horror games ever created, and there are plenty of reasons for that. One of those reasons is Pyramid Head. This terrifying, faceless monster is one of the scariest things we’ve ever come across in a Silent Hill game, and that’s saying something. Their hulking figures inspire fear the moment you lay your eyes on them, and watching them silently strut about with murderous intent strikes a primal fear in the player like few other things do.

When you need some extra tension in your life, these bosses are there for you.

What’s a good climax without a little bit of tension? There has to be moments where the protagonist is at least challenged, otherwise you just have One Punch Man. These moments often work exceptionally well in video games due to the personal investment players feel in the goings on, and how they strip away the power fantasy that players have slowly been growing into with the player character themselves, before turning that right back around for the hype conclusion. Be sure to share your favourites in the comments, and beware spoilers.

Senator Armstrong – Metal Gear Rising: Revengence

Metal Gear is well known for being surprisingly over the top. Metal Gear Rising Revengence doesn’t climax a game full of ridiculous Cyborg against Cyborg action with a battle against some huge walking tank (though that comes before the climax), but against a corrupt politician. Getting his powers from a small loan of a million nanomachines, son, Senator Armstrong uses his enhanced durability and strength to knock around Raiden like so much scrap metal, and would have succeeded if not for the meddling of Blade Wolf

Some bosses just won't die when you want them to.

We’ve covered all kinds of bosses lately. Disgusting bosses, anticlimactic bosses, bosses that keep coming back for more, you get the drift. However, there’s a special kind of boss that warrants attention for their inability to die, at least legitimately and in certain parts of certain games. So while they may be invulnerable in one fight, you can probably best them later. For other situations though, let’s look at 15 video game bosses that you can’t kill, no matter what. Warning: The word “impossible” and variations of it are repeated a lot.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Fortune (1st Battle) – Metal Gear Solid 2

It’s not like “Lady Luck” Fortune is the toughest boss to kill in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. She possesses a portable rail gun that can rip you apart easily but damaging her initially is impossible because bullets simply don’t hit her. Chalk this up to an electromagnetic device on her person that can deflect bullets and even disable nearby explosives. Whatever the case may be, just don’t waste your bullets in the early going.
