PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara, who resigned from Sony in September, has joined Amazon UK as director of PC. This was revealed by MCV though it’s unclear what Gara’s role entails for Amazon UK.

Gara played an instrumental role as PlayStation UK boss, handling marketing, finance, sales and other roles. Having joined in September 2011, Gara was in charge of both UK and Ireland business for PlayStation and helped the brand reach third place in terms of console market share. The PS4’s release saw the console become the top selling gaming console in the UK.

Gara’s role as PlayStation UK boss was subsequently taken up by Warwick Light, who served as general manager of PlayStation for Eastern Europe and the Nordics. We’ll find out what Amazon UK and Gara have in store for the future so stay tuned for more details and let us know what you think in the comments.

Warwick Light announced as Gara's successor for managing director of PlayStation in UK and Ireland.

Managing director for PlayStation in the UK and Ireland Fergal Gara has announced his resignation from the company. He will be replaced by Warwick Light, general manager of PlayStation in East Europe and the Nordics.

Gara stated that, “I have had a fantastic time leading the PlayStation business in the UK and Ireland over the past four years. I am very grateful for having had this opportunity and I want to thank my team who have been amazing and, of course, Jim [Ryan], for his support along with the wider PlayStation family who have helped make this period as successful as it has been.”

Joining the role in September 2011, Gara has been with the company for almost four years and oversaw both the PS3’s peak in the industry and the rise of the PS4 in the UK. He will be leaving Sony to pursue a “new professional venture” though it isn’t known if this will be within the games industry.

Fergal Gara believes others should up their game in the casual experiences department.

Nintendo’s financial woes – detailed several times over – could be a major hurdle for the entire industry. This is according to Sony UK MD Fergal Gara who states this despite acknowledging the 3DS as the best selling console of 2013.

Speaking to TrustedReviews, Gara said, “[The decline of Nintendo] could be detrimental to the market, unless people like us raise our game and help tap into the younger consumer group that they serve rather well.

“That is the challenge to us. We need to bring maybe more family-friendly, more casual experiences into the market. I think there’s a big market segment there that we should take the challenge to engage and I see lots of potential to do that.

“The DS family was the bestselling format last year, despite the stellar sales of the PS4 for the last four or five weeks, it was still the best selling console or console family.”

As 2014 begins, we’ll see if Nintendo can turn things around as Sony and even Microsoft surge ahead.

If you thought the imminent arrival of the PlayStation Vita 2000/Slim in the UK would bring a price cut to the older model, then think again. Sony will be phasing out the old PS Vita, and as such is running out of stock. That leaves very little reason to provide a price drop.

Speaking to VG247, Sony UK MD Fergal Gara addressed the idea of a price drop. “We don’t need to, there’s very little stock in the trade. It’s all but sold out. On this occasion there’s no immediate need to start discounting the old model.”

How long will it remain on the market? “Weeks. In short, if this model wasn’t coming we’d be running out of stock very fast. The timing’s nice in terms of clearing out the old model.”

The PlayStation Vita 2000/Slim releases in the UK on February 7th and will retail for £180. Will you miss the old model? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Sony UK MD Fergal Gara has stated that Ready At Dawn’s The Order: 1886 will be arriving on the PlayStation 4 “later this year. Previous rumours and teases from the studio have indicated that the action adventure exclusive could be out in Autumn 2014.

It was during the announcement of the PS Vita 2000 being available in the UK on February 7th that Gara stated, “Things kick off again in a short few weeks with the launch of infamous Second Son, another great first party title starting to push the boundaries of what PS4 can do. We have Driveclub, again coming from our first party studios, and we have The Order 1886 coming later in the year. So that’s just a flavour of what our own studios are bringing out this year.”

Expectations seem to be high for the game – Sony is already rumoured to be internally calling it the first “Naughty Dog game” for PS4 (which is a good thing).

PS4 "not in stock fully at retail" for UK.

Though it’s sold 4.2 million units worldwide, Sony UK MD Fergal Gara has stated that the company is finding it hard to meet demand in the UK. Stock levels apparently aren’t as high as Gara would have liked.

“We are still not satisfied, we are still not in stock fully at retail.”

Gara also stated that the global figure of 4.2 million units is a “suppressed figure” and that with the console set to launch in Japan and being under-supplied in other retail markets, it’s highly likely the overall number will increase ever further going forward.

“Of course we haven’t launched in Japan and we’re still not fully meeting demand in other major territories. That [4.2 million] is a suppressed number and one that will grow considerably from here. The UK is a big chunky part of that. I’m very proud we got our fair share of stock, but it’s still not enough. We want more, we need more. Retail is still not stocked fully.”

Nintendo 3DS is best overall selling console.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 saw a very strong launch across the world, most especially in the UK where it became the fastest selling platform in the country’s history since the PS Vita. According to MCV, it’s sales even managed to surpass the Xbox 360’s annual sales. At last count, it has sold 3 million consoles worldwide.

Sony UK MD Fergal Gara stated that, “We are delighted with the very strong sales of PS4 to date. Since we unveiled the console, gamers have shown huge interest in the PS4. Our focus now is rebuilding stock levels so those have not been able to get a PS4 can finally experience the next-gen.

“I’d like to thank the gamers, our retail and publishing partners who played a big part in making this success possible.”

As good as the PS4 did though, it didn’t beat the Nintendo 3DS in terms of overall sales. We did get Fire Emblem: Awakening, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, a new Zelda and Pokemon and many other games for the platform, so it’s understandable.

Managing director Fergal Gara says this was one "with the gamer in mind".

Speaking to Bloomberg in a video interview (transcribed by GameSpot), Sony UK managing director Fergal Gara has stated that, “The economics of PS4 are far closer to the economics of PS2 than they are to PS3.”

This comes off recent tear-downs which indicate that the console costs $381 to manufacture, compared to its $399 retail price. In comparison, the PS3 cost $840 to manufacture when it was released in 2006 and retailed for $599, making for a very significant loss.

“So if you consider with PS3, it was a highly bespoke architecture; it was expensive to make. And we weren’t making money on many of those devices, even at a high price point. With PS4 we come at it at a very lean price point and our economics will be far, far favorable to the PS3. So that is a job to be commended really for the internal team and of course it’s done with the gamer in mind.”

The PlayStation 4 is currently set to launch tomorrow in Europe.

Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine, Sony UK MD Fergal Gara confronted the long-standing issue of whether or not company will issue a bundle for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita when the former launches in November. When asked about the rumours, which first surfaced at Gamescom, Gara stated that, “Well a couple of things have evolved about since then. I think that clearly demonstrating what the two machines do when they come together was a big step and I think Gamescom was a key moment for that.”

Gamescom was the first time that Sony showed off the Remote Play feature for PlayStation Vita, which allows you to play PS4 games on the device. The demo in question was Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

“Seeing the consumer reaction and actually an upsurge in Vita sales immediately following that demo was very encouraging to see. So there is interest in the mechanic. Right now, as I sit here today, we’re not producing a box that fits a PS4 and PS Vita in that one box. We we could probably change our mind in the morning and still have it ready for launch to be honest so it’s not a big decision. It’s not a hard thing to do.

“At the moment sat down with our retail partners discussing exactly what they want the PS4 launch pack to look like. And its very easy for us to work with them and say looks lets create a package that contains PS Plus, Killzone Shadow Fall, PS Vita, PS4, shall we do that?

“And they put it together as a bundle, let’s call it a soft bundle but it basically means they package together the bits. And they may want to put in FIFA 14 for example or any other third party title and say there’s your PlayStation mega bundle for x pounds. Would we work with them to support them to make that it happen? Yes”.

As of now, there aren’t any hard and fast plans for a bundle when the PS4 launches, and this appears to be the case for when several months after the console’s release as well. “Ambivalent is maybe too strong a word. We’re still in the planning phase so it’s not a yes, its not a no. And the option is still there to pick up the two of them. We’ll make it happen in the ways that are best for our retail partners really and we’ll work with them. The concept is becoming more real by the week”.

What you be interested in such a bundle? Let us know in the comments below. The PlayStation 4 is slated to launch on November 15th in North America and November 29th in Europe.
