Square Enix has confirmed that their upcoming RPG, Final Fantasy XIII-2, will be supported with DLC after its release. Downloadable costumes, monsters and weapons will be part of the DLC packs, producer Yoshinori Kitase said at the Tokyo Game Show (via Siliconera).

Some of the downloadable content, though, will be available as exclusive stuff to only those who pre-order the game before its January release date.

This comes as somewhat of a shock, because Square rarely releases DLC for Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy XIII, of which XIII-2 is a sequel (duh), got no DLC.

“Regarding the DLC content, we feel that the final product is 100 per cent enjoyable… it’s the complete package. So we’re not planning any DLC at this time,” Kitase said.

Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed several details on the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII-2 in a fan event which took place over the week, as reported by Andriasang.

He first announced that the game’s development is now 90% complete, after a one and a half year development time till now. He said that the release date will be confirmed at an event in Tokyo, which is obviously TGS (Tokyo Game Show), which kicks off Thursday morning. We do know that the game’s slated for a January 2012 release in the US and early 2012 in the UK, but if development is going so strong, with even English voice work out of the way, who knows, we could have the game by December.

When asked how long the game will be, Kitase said that the main plotline will be shorter than Final Fantasy XIII’s, but extra content will keep fans busy. When asked if the game will have any DLC, he was told by the PR guys to not answer. Unfortunately. But he did say they’re looking into it.

Hints about a planned special edition for the game, and players with FFXIII save files being rewarded in XIII-2, were also dropped.

The voice recording for the English version of Final Fantasy XIII-2, to be released next year, has been completed now.

Ali Hillis, voice actor of Lightning (protagonist in FFXIII and recurring character in XIII-2) wrote on Facebook: “”Well… it seems that we have wrapped recording on FFXIII-2.”

She also said that her work with Mass Effect 3 (as Dr. Liara T’Soni) is “still in process.” She is also working on a game that she “can’t talk about.”

FFXIII-2 is supposed to release in US in January and in “early 2012” in Europe. Here’s what we think Square needs to do with FFXIII-2 to ensure it improves over FFXIII.

Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be released in Europe in “early 2012”. In Square’s latest release schedule, it says that Final Fantasy XIII-2 will still release in US in January, as announced a little time back, but in Europe, it’ll release a few months later maybe.

Square Enix has confirmed to VG247 that the Jan release date is only for US regions.

Square Enix has launched the official website for their recently announced Final Fantasy XIII-2. The website only carries a high quality logo of the game for now but expect it to get the trailer and other assets for the game soon.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be releasing for PS3 and Xbox 360. Square’s confirmed it’ll be getting a 2011 release, atleast in Japan.
