Square Enix recently released the TGS trailer for their upcoming MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV. Thr trailer looks epic and all, but I will be cautios. Final Fantasy games have had a tendancy to disappoint, lately.

The trailer begins with the camera panning over several beatifully rendered locales of the game’s fantasy world. Many creatures that Final Fantasy fans might be familiar with have returned.

Later on in the trailer, we are feasted with dragons battling each other, epic scenes of battles and other typically Final Fantasy scenes. It looks interesting till now, but as I said, I still have my doubts.

It was recently announced that due to techincal issues, the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV will be released in March 2011.

Square Enix has announced and elaborated upon the release details for Final Fantasy XIV, the latest entry in the long running JRPG franchise. The fourteenth game is due for release this Spetember on the PC, and sometime next year on the PS3.

The catch here is that Final Fantasy XIV is in fact an MMORPG. While the previous MMO Final Fantasy venture, Final Fantasy XI, is generally regarded to be a moderate success, it faced quite a few problems all of its own. For this new release, Square Enix looks keen to avoid any hassles.

A Beta phase for the Windows version will begin in early July 2010, the publisher said.

In addition, a special edition will be releasing a week in advance on September 22nd. The special edition package includes:

EARLY ACCESS – Play a few days prior to the release of the PC Standard Edition
BEHIND-THE-SCENES DVD – Get an insider look at the making of FINAL FANTASY XIV with exclusive video content, interviews and more in this special documentary DVD
SECURITY TOKEN – A FINAL FANTASY XIV branded Security Token used in addition to your regular password
ADVENTURERS BRANDED TUMBLER – Carry a small piece of Eorzea around with you with this branded tumbler
MAP OF EORZEA – A detailed map showing the key areas of Eorzea, essential for the committed traveller
TRAVEL JOURNAL – Record your travels in this journal filled with pages of never-before-seen concept art
FREE GAMEPLAY- 30-day free gameplay
GUEST PASS – Invite a friend to play free for a limited time
GAME DISC
GAME MANUAL

Sounds interesting, but can it hold its own against MMO behemoth World of Warcraft?

Sqaure Enix recently confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV will remain an exclusive to the PS3, and blamed the decision on Microsoft’s ‘closed’ infrastructure. Apparently, Xbox LIVE, Micrsoft’s online service, is too ‘closed’ for the upcoming MMO, so Final Fantasy XIV is going to remain an exclusive to the PS3 for conoles- yet.

“The main reason why we couldn’t go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system,” explained game director Hiromichi Tanaka. “[Live is] different to the normal internet environment, so when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice.

“Microsoft has a different point of view: they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live. We’re still talking to… We couldn’t come to an agreement on Xbox Live.”

Pfft, typical Micrsosft, messing things up and losing out on big marketshares…

Final Fantasy XIV is due for release on the PS3 and PC.

It was already known that a Final Fantasy spin-off was in development at Bionic Commando developer GRIN before the studio shutdown. However, details and video of that game, which is apparently a sequel to Final Fantasy XII, have come out tonight.

Titled FORTRESS, the game is currently still in development at an unnamed studio for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. This Final Fantasy is different, taking the game to an action genre in the world of Ivalice.
