A prominent leaker has said that though the rumoured Final Fantasy 9 Remake is indeed in the works, the alleged remake of its successor isn't real.

Square Enix is of course at work on the final instalment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, though past reports have claimed that with Final Fantasy 9 and 10, the company also has additional Final Fantasy remake projects in the works. According to fresh claims from a typically reliable leaker, however, that might not be entirely accurate.

As per prominent leaker Midori, only half of the aforementioned rumour is true. Responding to a question on Twitter, Midori recently claimed that though Square Enix does indeed have Final Fantasy remakes in the works, a remake of Final Fantasy 10, contrary to past reports, doesn’t exist. That said, the leaker also claims that the long-rumoured Final Fantasy 9 Remake is indeed real and in the works.

When the rumoured remake will be officially unveiled remains to be seen, though fans of Final Fantasy 10 will be disappointed to know that it isn’t being brought back as some may have anticipated, if Midori’s claims are indeed accurate.

Recently, a remake of Final Fantasy 9 was seemingly teased by Naoki Yoshida, director and producer of Final Fantasy 14 and producer of Final Fantasy 16. Read more on that through here.

Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks and months.

The combined sales of Final Fantasy 10 and Final Fantasy 10-2 have exceeded 20.8 million units, Square Enix has revealed.

Final Fantasy is a series that keeps on growing and changing, sometimes for the better and sometimes not, but its thanks to that very ever-changing nature that even the older games of the series never really feel like they’ve been made redundant. There’s always an audience out there that’s willing to go back to the series’ earlier instalments.

Case in point, Final Fantasy 10 is continue to enjoy success. In fact, the entire Final Fantasy 10 series – which includes Final Fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 10-2, and the HD remaster collection that includes both – has now collectively sold over 20.8 million units worldwide. Square Enix has confirmed that figure to Gematsu, revealing that the games have sold an additional 6.8 million units since their collective sales were reported at 14 million units back in 2013. It’s highly likely that those sales have mostly (if not entirely) come from the remasters.

Meanwhile, there’s plenty of upcoming Final Fantasy releases to look forward to as well. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion launches this Winter, with Final Fantasy 16 coming in Summer 2023, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launching in Winter next year.

These bosses have multiple ways to pummel their foes and just when you think it ends with one form, a crazy transformation awaits.

With how many different types of boss fights we’ve seen over many decades of gaming, those with transformations still continue to be incredibly relevant. Sure, they may end up prolonging fights but at least they look super-cool (or downright terrifying, depending on who you’re fighting). Let’s take a look at 15 insane transformations for bosses here. Spoilers follow so be warned.

Yami – Okami

The battle with Amaterasu’s archenemy Yami plays out over five different phases. Yami’s first form is akin to a sphere with an intricate glowing red design that can lash out with tendrils and launch missiles. Its second form takes on a greenish appearance which segregates into platforms and can use fire to attack. Hilariously, it becomes a kind of slot machine for its third phase while its fourth form is a yellow sphere that has legs and arms. All of this culminates in a giant claw extending from the sphere while the arena is covered in darkness, missiles and lasers.

Multiple titles in Square Enix's legendary RPG series will find their way onto Sony's streaming service throughout the year.

There are few franchises that can really manage to stand the test of time. One of those select few happens to be Final Fantasy. The series began all the way in the NES era and has continued on in some form to this very day with 15 (soon to be 16) mainline titles and a variety of spin-offs and individual sequels. With Final Fantasy 7‘s release in 1997, the brand also became closely associated with PlayStation, and now that game will appropriately be the first in several classic entries coming to the PS Now service.

As announced earlier today, five classic Final Fantasy titles will be coming to PS Now starting this month with the remastered version of the original Final Fantasy 7. In October, Final Fantasy 8 Remastered will follow, and then in November will be Final Fantasy 9 to round out the original PS1 released trio of titles. Then for December, it will be a double whammy with HD remasters of Final Fantasy 10 and its sequel, 10-2. There will be a number skip here as 11 was a MMO title, but 2022 will begin with the release of Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age.

These titles will begin coming to the service starting on September 7th, which you can download or stream on all PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 as well as compatible PCs.

Join us for a look back on a great year of gaming.

Video games have gone through their share of changes and evolutions over the years. Nevertheless, it’s always nice to look back and appreciate the games of old which either shaped genres as we know them today or provided unforgettable experiences. So two decades later, let’s take a look back at 15 of the best games from 2001.

Halo: Combat Evolved

From being a third person shooter on the Mac to a first person shooter exclusive to Xbox, Bungie’s IP saw its fair share of changes. When it debuted, it presented incredible gun play, well-crafted missions and large sandbox-like levels that rewarded all kinds of play-styles. All of this along with Marty O’ Donnell’s stellar score turned Halo into a juggernaut and Microsoft into a venerable gaming force for years to come.

Check out some of the most over-the-top, comical and devastating summons.

What makes a great summon? Is it the ability to wreak utter devastation? Is it the summoning animation that’s either intricate, succinct or a fine balance between the two? Maybe it’s the overarching impact on the gameplay and story of a role-playing game. Let’s take a look at 15 of the best summons in RPGs and what makes them so good.

Judgment – Golden Sun

Djinns in Golden Sun were fairly straightforward but combining them wielded some devastating results. The true power move was utilizing four of the same element to bring in the heaviest of hitters. While the main difference is the amount of damage dealt by a specific element, Judgment is still perhaps the most iconic. There’s nothing quite like a winged knight with a lion shield decimating everything on the surface in spectacular yet quick fashion.

In November 2019, Microsoft announced that a large number of Final Fantasy titles would be coming to Xbox Game Pass in the future. Since then, of the ones that are confirmed, a few (Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8 Remastered, Final Fantasy 9, and Final Fantasy 15) have been added to the service’s catalog, but many others remain missing.

Final Fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 10-2, Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age, Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 13-2, and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 were all also among the games that were confirmed for Xbox Game Pass, but these haven’t yet shown up in the service’s library. However, Microsoft confirms that though their arrival will be a bit belated, they’re still planned for Game Pass, and will be coming in 2021.

A Microsoft spokesperson said to True Achievements: “As we announced at X019, we are excited to bring the Final Fantasy franchise to gamers with Xbox Game Pass. We have done so throughout 2020 and will continue to do so in 2021 and beyond. We look forward to announcing specific launch dates for more Final Fantasy titles in the future.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft and Square Enix have also been in discussions to bring Final Fantasy 14 to Xbox One for some time now, so here’s hoping that happens sooner rather than later. Whenever that does happen, it’s unlikely it will come to Xbox Game Pass.

Tearful reunions and heroic sacrifices alike define Square Enix's stellar RPG series.

The Final Fantasy series may tell a different story with each new sequel (exceptions abound, of course) but each of them has an incredible moment or two that stays with you. While cataloging each and every one of those will take a long, long while, let’s take a look at what we think are 15 of the most emotional moments from the entire series. Spoilers – and we mean major spoilers – for almost every game in the series abound.

Vivi’s Past – Final Fantasy 9

Final Fantasy 9’s cast has this ineffable charisma that makes it hard to not like them. Vivi the Black Mage is one example, being relatively kind but also easy to manipulate and down on himself more often than not. However, Vivi is actually a manufactured Black Mage, created in Dali by Alexandria as a prototype soldier and accidentally separated from his ilk. Upon reaching Dali and learning the truth – that its villagers are responsible for keeping the entire Black Mage production under wraps – Vivi becomes even less self-assured. When Black Waltz 3, a winged Black Mage, arrives to recapture Garnet, the other Black Mages attempt to protect Vivi despite initially capturing him. They all fall, leading to Vivi facing Black Waltz 3 and taking the first steps to defining his purpose throughout the journey.

Being eaten alive sucks but it's certainly a living for these foes.

Of the many ways, getting eaten or swallowed alive is probably one of the worst (not that we’d know). Unfortunately, there are plenty of enemies in video games that can pull this off. While many interesting gameplay dynamics open up, such as fighting your way out from the inside or trying to avoid being eaten, other times it’s just one agonizing death on top of the rest. Let’s take a look at 15 video game enemies with mouths so big they can literally swallow you.

Choking Weed – Gradius 3

It’s bad enough that you have to shoot past a weed-infested level with killer plants extending from the floor and ceiling to hit you. But then you come across Choking Weed, whose Venus Flytrap-style mouth opens up to actually suck you in. Fortunately, the rate at which its jaws close is slow enough to evade. Just be careful when it suddenly decides to dip forward.

Charting the highs and lows of Square Enix's flagship franchise.

Without question, Final Fantasy is one of the biggest video game franchises ever. Having been around since the NES days, the series has always been synonymous with grand, sweeping stories the likes of which very few other properties have been able to come close to in terms of quality, and there’s been more than a few Final Fantasy games that have gone down as generation- and genre-defining classics.

One of those classics will be getting a remake very soon (or, well, the first part of a remake, at any rate), when Final Fantasy 7 Remake launches on April 10, and in the lead-up to that, we (and millions of others) have been looking back on the highs and lows of the series over the years. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at all the mainline numbered Final Fantasy games, and ranking them from worst to best.

So without further ado, let’s get started.

#16. FINAL FANTASY 14 (ORIGINAL RELEASE)

Final Fantasy 14 came at a time when the series as a whole was perhaps in the worst shape of its life. Final Fantasy 13 had been come across as something of a disappointment in 2009, and the fact that FF14 was an MMORPG meant that quite a few automatically lost interest as well. It didn’t help that when the game launched, it was utter crap (to put it mildly). Thanks to being terribly unpolished, being ridden with performance issues, featuring an interface that was a nightmare to navigate, and core interaction, exploration, and combat mechanics that were an absolute chore, the original Final Fantasy 14 was perhaps the biggest misstep this series ever made. Of course, Square Enix did manage to turn things around, to the extent that Final Fantasy 14 as we know it today is probably one of the best games in the series- but we’ll get to that soon enough.
