Final Fantasy 15, on Nintendo Switch at last (though not in the way you might have wanted it).

Although Square Enix had previously expressed interest in bringing Final Fantasy 15 over to the Switch, they had made it clear that they weren’t looking at bringing over the mobile adaptation Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition, and that it would be the full thing if anything. Well, uh- I don’t think they were entirely honest, because Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition HD has been announced for PS4, Xbox One, and, yes, Nintendo Switch.

The PS4 and Xbox One versions are available to download right now; the Switch version is being withheld for now. Presumably, it too was meant to be a part of the delayed Nintendo Direct, as an “available now” announcement, and Square wants to maintain that.

So, while this isn’t ideal, this officially means that Final Fantasy 15 is now available in some form or the other on every active system on the market (or will be, once the Switch version actually comes out). Hurray.

Square Enix’s audacious port of Final Fantasy 15 to smartphones, Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition, will be launching on iOS on February 9, the game’s listing on the App Store has revealed. The game will be released in episodes, with the first episode being free to download and play, the next two costing $0.99 each, and the ones after that all costing $3.99. The entire story can be had for $20, should the player desire.

Final Fantasy 15 Pocket Edition will bring all of Final Fantasy 15 to smartphones- at last as far as the story goes. The game will have a chibi artstyle, which I presume is well suited to the less powerful mobile games.

Pocket Edition isn’t the only upcoming port of the game- PC players can finally play it too, since Final Fantasy 15 will be launching on PC later this year. As for Pocket Edition, while right now, only the iOS release has been confirmed, hopefully it will be a simultaneous launch on iOS and Android.

It looks kind of... cute?

Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition, a special version of the game made for iOS and Android devices, came as a bit of a surprise to everyone when it was announced at Gamescom last month- after all, who expected one of the most cutting edge games on the market to be put on smartphones?

But Final Fantasy 15 is indeed coming to mobile devices, and while a lot of concessions have been made- for instance, it has adopted a highly stylized chibi-style look in the transition- it will still be Final Fantasy 15, on the go.

If you are curious what that chibi style might look like in motion, you can check out the new video for the game below, which also shows us more gameplay footage, showing off the chibi style in motion- things don’t look half bad here at all, actually. Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition is due out on iOS, Android, and Windows mobile devices (with a later release also coming to Windows PCs).

"Whether it would be the right thing to do" is still up in the air for dev team.

After announcing Final Fantasy 15 Pocket Edition, a mobile friendly adaptation of Final Fantasy 15 which will have 10 episodes, director Hajime Tabata expressed the possibility of it coming to the Nintendo Switch in the future.

In conversation with IGN at Gamescom, Tabata noted that, “There is certainly a chance. It’s certainly not zero. Obviously we’d have to think about what the meaning and what the significance of bringing this to Switch would be. You know, whether people would want to play it and whether it would be the right thing to do for our team.”

That being said, Final Fantasy 15 Pocket Edition doesn’t have controller support on mobiles and would likely have to be playable in handheld mode only, unlike other Switch titles that can be played in docked and handheld mode.

As noted in the Twitch Gamescom live show, Tabata hinted at the team wanting to do more with the franchise on Nintendo Switch. While no announcement came regarding Final Fantasy 15 on the hybrid console, Final Fantasy 15 Pocket Edition wouldn’t be a bad fit. After all, it’s unlikely that the Switch can handle the PS4/Xbox One version without some serious optimization and changes.

Final Fantasy 15 will head to PC in early 2018 though and also have more content in the form of the Comrades DLC (which adds co-op multiplayer) and Episode Ignis.
