Neither of the two is due out this year, though Final Fantasy 9 Remake could release sometime in 2026, a prominent leaker has claimed.

A remake of Final Fantasy 9 and a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics have been in the rumour mill for a couple of years at this point, and though there has been little to no official communication from Square Enix to confirm (or deny) reports, leaks continue to insist that both projects are very much in the pipeline.

In fact, prominent leaker NateTheHate recently threw his weight behind those claims again. Spotted by VGC, in the lead-up to last week’s State of Play presentation, the leaker claimed that both titles were still very much in “active development”. As per the leaker, neither will is expected to release in 2025, but he claims Final Fantasy 9 Remake in particular could release sometime in 2026.

What that means for when Square Enix will choose to announce these titles is anyone’s guess. A Nintendo Direct presentation focused on the Switch 2 is scheduled for April 2, which might presumably serve as a suitable stage for such reveals- though that’s purely speculation at this point.

"The series does lend itself well to that kind of storytelling, and we love Tactics as well. It’s probably about time that we do a new one," says Naoki Yoshida.

A potential remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics has been in the rumour mill for several years at this point, and even though official word on whether or not it exists remains elusive, Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida – who’s also the director and producer of Final Fantasy 14 – has indicated that he, at the very least, is personally interested in seeing Final Fantasy Tactics be brought back.

In a recent interview with TheGamer, when asked about whether there was any likelihood of seeing a Tactics spinoff for Final Fantasy 16, Yoshida said that though FF16’s setting and core mechanics wouldn’t lend themselves to a tactics game very well, the series as a whole does fit that genre, adding that it’s “probably about time” a new Tactics game was developed.

“How would we even do the Eikon versus Eikon battles in that style?” Yoshida said. “If you have the Eikons, how many squares is an Eikon going to be? You have more people out there as well, so what about the wait time in between? … But the series does lend itself well to that kind of storytelling, and we love Tactics as well. It’s probably about time that we do a new one.”

Final Fantasy Tactics remaster was first spotted in a massive list of unannounced titles in 2021’s GeForce Now leak. In February last year, journalist Jason Schreier seemed to reaffirm the game’s existence, but later in the year, Final Fantasy Tactics creator Yasumi Matsuno said there were no “current” plans to bring the series back.

Series creator Yasumi Matsuno, in responding to fans on social media, said you'll have to ask Square Enix about the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster.

While rumours about Square Enix working on a remaster for seminal tactical RPG Final Fantasy Tactics have been going around for quite some time, the game’s creator, Yasumi Matsuno, has taken to social media platform X to state that there are no current plans to remaster the game.

Responding to a question on X, Matsuno states that fans would have to ask Square Enix about the potential remaster, and that it’s all he can say in his position. For the sake of reference, Matsuno is one of the people credit with the Ivalice sub-series in Final Fantasy, with titles like Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy 12 being parts of the Ivalice setting.

Back in February, Bloomberg’s Jason Schrier stated that a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics was in the works. Square Enix itself hasn’t made any real announcement about the game, and the last we heard of any game set in Ivalice was Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood‘s Alliance Raid setting, which featured characters from Final Fantasy Tactics.

Final Fantasy Tactics was originally released on the PlayStation One back in 1997 in Japan. The game has since been ported to PlayStation Portable as Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions in 2007, and eventually made its way on to iOS devices.

Bloomberg's Jason Schreier indicates that the remaster is real, though further details (official or unofficial) have yet to be revealed.

After the infamous GeForce Now leak and many games on that list proving accurate, the wait is on for Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster. Square Enix hasn’t provided an indication that it’s coming, but it teased that the Tactics team is “incredibly busy at the moment” and has “other things to do” when speaking to Finaland.

If that weren’t enough, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier says it’s “coming,” in a recent tweet. He didn’t specify anything further, so he’s either repeating established rumors or not at liberty to say more. Your guess is as good as ours.

First released in 1997 for Japan on the PlayStation One, Final Fantasy Tactics is a turn-based tactical RPG. It’s the first game in the series to introduce the setting of Ivalice and featured several developers who worked on the Ogre Battle series (to which Tactics Ogre is related). Renowned as one of the best games ever made, it was ported to the PlayStation Portable as Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions in 2007.

Much as we may pine, these games won't be getting easier any time soon.

We take for granted how some games are made these days. Easing the player and keeping the experience balanced seems a given but some games subvert this rule. They’re fairly difficult to play from the outset due to their gameplay but also because of one’s lack of knowledge on how to make them easy. These are the games that you kind of wish had an easy mode when they first released rather than making you scratch and claw to make them easy. Not that they’ll ever get optional easy modes but it’s still interesting to look back and examine why they were so difficult. So without further ado, let’s take a look.

Dark Souls Remastered

Combat in FromSoftware games always has a straightforward explanation – hit this button to attack, this button to dodge etc. However, the greater nuances like stamina management, invincibility frames while rolling, the significance of certain stats and what to build towards take more time to understand. That’s not even considering the design of bosses in games like Dark Souls Remastered or the order to go to certain areas given the game’s world design. Suffice it to say but if this or the original was your first Dark Souls, it was a struggle.

Adding insult to injury is all in a day's work for these bosses.

For every boss fight in today’s modern age that makes us question our patience, there are boss fights from the old days that did much more. These weren’t bosses that were simply difficult. No, these bosses were metaphorical mountains to climb and by the time you beat them, there was that feeling of something incredible being accomplished. Let’s take a look at 14 of the hardest retro boss fights of all time.

C’thun – World of Warcraft (2006)

If you were bold enough to battle C’thun in World of Warcraft, then you were in for some pain. Introduced with patch 1.9 in 2006, C’thun was insanely tough, randomly swallowing select players and digesting them slowly. Such was C’thun’s power that he could insta-kill raid group members with a single beam attack. Even weakening him for short periods of time did little to affect his health. When Blizzard realized that C’thun was effectively unbalanced, it stepped in to nerf him. Those who were there, however, will remember his terror forever.

Good news; Final Fantasy Tactics: War Of The Lions still exists! The game has been delayed till late July, for which assistant producer Shiina is very sorry. But, in a bid to smooth things over, Shinna has answered a few questions on the upcoming title:

Is the slow-down problem solved?

Yes! It’s definitely faster, comfortable to play.

We’ll show it in the trailer or a movie clip.

Is it a universal app?

No. We’ll release iPhone ver and iPad ver both.

When will you release the iPad version?

Now we plan to release it 1 month later than iPhone version.

Supported 3GS?

Yes! Absolutely!

3G also supported?

No. We tried to support 3G but it was toooo slow to play the game.

Does it have the Multiplayer mode.

Nope. We had to cut it off for iOS devices.

Add-ons?

No. We don’t plan to release add-ons now.

Did you add the autosave function?

Yes! Exactly!

If you get a phone call, the game will be automatically saved and you can get back to the game immediately.

Honestly…it took much time to add this function. It made the dev team exhausted.
