Square Enix’s three MMORPGs- Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, and Dragon Quest X- all of them successful in their own right, will be getting a massive crossover event, reports Siliconera.

A sage from Dragon Quest X will take a great ark and visit the world of Final Fantasy XI, looking for a lost slime. This will initiate a Monstrosity event, where players can play as a Blue Slime. Players will be able to get special Slime gear.

Spriggan, a monster from Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, will also show up in Final Fantasy XI- apparently, moogles can talk to spriggans. Like with the Blue Slime, players will be able to play as a spriggan and get special equipment.

Over in Final Fantasy XIV, Shantotto, the powerful black mage from Final Fantasy XI, will show up in Eorzea; players will be able to join her in a FATE, where if you defeat her, you will be able to recruit her as a minion. Similarly, a golem from Dragon Quest X will show up as a FATE in Final Fantasy XIV, and if you defeat it, it can join you as a minion.

Shantotto will also be showing up in Dragon Quest X, where she puts you on a quest to recover lost items. If you do that, you win a Chocobo hat. Similarly, A moogle from Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will give Dragon Quest X players a quest too. Complete this and players get a Cactaur Mask.

The crossover events start December 11, when content from A Realm Reborn and Dragon Quest X will show up in Final Fantasy XI; Dragon Quest X will have the Final Fantasy XI crossover between January and February 2014. The Dragon Quest X and Final Fantasy XIV crossover will take place later, between February and March. Finally, the two crossovers for Final Fantasy XIV will take place in the end of January to early February 2014.

Promises a "shift in technology" to outdo services like Gaikai, OnLive and more.

It’s not just Microsoft and Sony – even Square-Enix is getting the Cloud computing business. It recently announced a new Cloud gaming architecture, Project Flare, to connect servers as a “virtual supercomputer” that will “revolutionize the way users interact” by effectively boost the efficiency of processing.

Square Enix director of business development Jacob Navok spoke to Polygon and stated that, “So up until now when we’ve talked about cloud gaming, we’ve mostly talking about streaming games. They weren’t really cloud games to us. Gaikai, OnLive and the other companies were just putting a console in the data center. They weren’t actually changing anything about it. There was a shift in the distribution model, there was a shift in the business, but there wasn’t a shift in the game design. It wasn’t a shift in technology.”

Taking Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the team rigged a tower of several hundreds of cardboard boxes together in-game and had the bottom box shout out, causing the remaining boxes to go flailing about. According to Square Enix, this wouldn’t be possible on a current console or PC. Another example of the “shift in technology” is showcasing the perspective of each party member in Final Fantasy XI all at once.

“Now we’re not saying the next Deus Ex game is going to be Deus Ex: Boxes, but you can imagine what we could do if these weren’t just boxes but people or NPCs or enemy characters or lots and lots of robots flying. We could possibly achieve real-time battles that look like battles in the Lord of the Rings movies.”

Project Flare is currently 2 to 3 years away from launch. What are your thoughts on it? Let us know in the comments.

Yoichi Wada, CEO of Square Enix, has revealed that Final Fantasy XI is the most profitable game they have produced. The game was released on the PC and Xbox 360 and has proved to be a strong performer, even after all these years.

Final Fantasy XIV meanwhile is one of the worst game launches ever, and seeks to undo all the good work they did with Final Fantasy XI. The game will be launched again on the PS3 next year. There are a lot of active players who have totaled up to 200,000 hours in the game.

“Looking at profitability, it’s the top of all past Final Fantasy games,” he said at the VanaFest 2012 event where a new expansion to Final Fantasy XI was announced. You can check out the trailer to that over here.

The recent natural disasters that have struck Japan have forced the servers for Final Fantasy 14 and Metal Gear Online to shut down temporarily.

Square Enix has temporary halted service on Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV, while Konami has temporarily suspended Metal Gear Online. The stoppages appear to affect both in and outside of Japan.

The decisions follow a request from Japanese power companies that all consumers conserve electricity, particularly during peak hours.

Final Fantasy XI and XIV will be offline for a week until March 20, Square Enix said.

In comparison to the other devestation caused by the earthquakes in Japan this is really rather insignificant, but fans of these titles may wish to know. Our condolonces to all who are affected by the incidents in Japan at the moment.
