"As a AAA VR game developer, we are just not able to justify the expense needed going forward," the studio says.

2023 may have seen a bevy of excellent new games, but for the people making them, it’s been a devastating year, thanks to constant industry-wide layoffs and a number of notable studio closures. Now, another developer has announced that it’s being shuttered.

First Contact Entertainment – known for its virtual reality shooters like Firewall: Zero Hour, Firewall Ultra, and Solaris: Offworld Combat – has announced on Facebook that it will be shutting down. The studio attributes its closure to “the lack of support for VR within the industry”, saying it cannot justify the expenses that would be required to keep moving forward.

“After almost 8 years of working with the most amazing team I’ve ever had the pleasure of being part of, I’m sad to announce that we will be closing our company First Contact Entertainment by the end of the year,” the announcement post on the studio’s Facebook page reads. “The lack of support for VR within the industry has eventually taken its toll. As a AAA VR game developer, we are just not able to justify the expense needed going forward. We are a team of fearless innovators willing to push new technologies to its limits. I am extremely proud of the team and grateful to our investors, our partners and of course our community of dedicated and passionate players.”

That, of course, means that Solaris: Offworld Combat 2, which was announced earlier this year, has been cancelled.

Developer First Contact Entertainment has also released a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming multiplayer shooter.

The PlayStation VR2 is only a few months old yet, but so far in its life, it’s in desperate need of proper killer apps. First Contact Entertainment’s first person shooter Firewall Ultra has looked like a game that could potentially fit that description since it was revealed last year (not least because its predecessor is still one of the best games in the original PS VR’s library), and now, we know exactly when it will be coming out.

First Contact Entertainment has announced that Firewall Ultra will be out for the PlayStation VR2 on August 24, a little over a month from now. The game’s Standard Edition will be priced at $39.99, while a Digital Deluxe Edition – which will include early unlocks for four contracts, four contractor outfits, four weapon camos, and the Operation Pass – will be available for $59.99. Meanwhile, pre-ordering either of the two editions will also net you the the Reaper X75 legendary weapon.

A gameplay trailer has also been released for the multiplayer shooter. You can check it out below.

After launching last year for the Oculus Quest, First Contact Entertainment’s Solaris Offworld Combat is coming to PlayStation VR. The first person shooter is out today for the platform and sees teams of four players competing in the Virtual Holofields for a chance at glory. Check out the launch trailer below to see it in action.

Solaris Offworld Combat isn’t your usual team deathmatch multiplayer shooter. It sees two teams competing to capture and hold a control point. However, the point moves every 30 seconds, which means you’ll need to think fast to capture it again. The team with the most points wins.

Along with utilizing the DualShock 4 controller, the title supports the PlayStation Aim controller, providing the sensation of recoil. Solaris Offworld Combat is available digitally for PlayStation VR today but PlayStation Plus subscribers can avail of a 50 percent discount for the first two weeks. Stay tuned for more details on updates and future content in the meantime.
