For the good or for the bad?

The Assassin’s Creed movie had me cautiously excited- although video game movies have universally sucked so far, this one looked a bit different. It had big name talent attached to it (Michael Fassbender), and it seemed like it was actually treating its source material seriously and with some respect. That, and Assassin’s Creed is actually the kind of game that would lend itself to a movie pretty damn well.

It was originally projected to release some time next year, but now it’s been delayed, which is a bit of a bummer. The delay is because the movie seems to be suffering in development, having suffered multiple script rewrites and production issues; the success of Days of Future Past, the X-Men movie from earlier this year, also mean that Fox is more interested in exploiting the X-Men property by striking when the iron is hot, meaning that that has also probably diverted some resources from the Assassin’s Creed movie.

Oh well. I guess I’ll say the same thing I say when games are delayed- take your time, as long as you deliver a compelling product.

The Portal composer is currently looking into a cover that might contain some or all of his melodies.

Portal composer Jonathan Coulton, famous for the song “Still Alive”, is currently battling Fox for the use of one of his covers in the popular TV show Glee.

The show features a bunch of high school teens performing covers of famous hit songs. They employed Coulton’s cover of the Sir Mix-a-lot number “Baby Got Back” recently without crediting Coulton for his work.

According to a blog post, Coulton states, “They also got in touch with my peeps to basically say that they’re within their legal rights to do this, and that I should be happy for the exposure (even though they do not credit me, and have not even publicly acknowledged that it’s my version – so you know, it’s kind of SECRET exposure).”

“While they appear not to be legally obligated to do any of these things, they did not apologise, offer to credit me, or offer to pay me, and indicated that this was their general policy in regards to covers of covers.”

Interestingly, Coulton has legal rights to his cover of the song. It wouldn’t be an issue if Fox had credited Coulton, or, you know, not used his version in the first place. But they did.

“It does not appear that I have a copyright claim, but I’m still investigating the possibility (which I consider likely) that they used some or all of my audio.”

The hour-long comedy will follow EA's popular first person shooter franchise.

Three Kings for television? If it’s pulled off correctly, then why not? According to Deadline, popular (and controversial) TV network Fox has announced that they’re developing EA’s Battlefield: Bad Company as an hour-long comedy series.

According to the site, “Electronic Arts‘ hit video game Battlefield: Bad Company is headed to the small screen. Fox has put in development Bad Company, an hour-long action comedy based on EA’s bestselling video game from Alias alum John Eisendrath, Sony TV and studio-based Happy Madison.

“Written by Eisendrath, Bad Company features the main characters from the game. It follows four renegade soldiers as they exit military life and enter the private sector. But trouble is never far behind as they realize their commanding officer had used them to further the ends of a shadow unit within the government and now wants them dead to cover his tracks. Eisendrath is executive producing with Happy Madison’s Doug Robinson and EA’s Patrick Bach and Patrick O’Brien.”
