Just like in the UK, F1 2018 debuted at the top of the sales charts in France the week of its release (weekly sales charts for games in France are staggered by a week). And, very unlike the UK, in spite of F1 2018 shooting its way to the top, the top five charts continue to be dominated by Nintendo and Nintendo games, with three out of the top five games being Switch exclusives.

This includes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at second place, Super Mario Odyssey at fourth place, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at fifth place, with Shenmue 1 and 2 HD debuting in third place. The top five is all we get from France, so that’s all the information that we have—but at the very least, it is clear that F1 and Shenmue had good launches there, and that Nintendo’s evergreen games continue to do strongly (as would be expected from them).

Just a week ahead of its official one year release anniversary, news has emerged that the Nintendo Switch has crossed a significant sales milestone in France- the console has sold 1 million units in the territory. It managed this feat in under a year, which also makes it the fastest selling console in France in history- tracking well ahead of the PS4 and Wii, which are the two other fastest selling consoles of all time in the country.

This should come as a surprise to no one- continental Europe has always been a strong territory for Nintendo, with France being their strongest territory there of the entire lot, and the system has been doing remarkably well there since its release.

The question for now is whether or not the Switch will maintain this pace of sales going forward, though for now, two months into 2018, it seems to be showing no signs of slowing down.

At this point, it’s well established that the Nintendo Switch seems to have done well everywhere– that apparently includes France too, which is a part of Europe, a territory that Nintendo has been historically weak in. In France, the Switch sold 105,000 units over its launch weekend- this is the best launch Nintendo has ever had in France ever, exceeding even the Wii’s, which sold 95,000 in its debut weekend.

That’s not all, either- apparently, this is the best console launch, from any console manufacturer, in France, ever. That means out of all Sega, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo systems sold, the Switch has managed to sell the highest over its launch weekend.

Sales were certainly driven by interest in the system’s core concept, its great marketing, and the stupendous The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild– it remains to be seen whether or not Nintendo can continue maintaining this level of success, but for now, they’re certainly off to a great start.

We know Heavy Rain was a 18 rated game, and that may have led to a few sales loss, but a new edition is being made that makes it more Teen friendly. The game loses a few content to get that desired rating drop in Europe. PEGI (which is a rating agency in Europe) rated Heavy Rain ’18’ citing, “extreme violence, violence towards defenceless people, sexual violence and strong language.”

The new version will not be available in the entire Europe but only the French market and is being named as Heavy Rain Edition Modifiée. The name is self-explanatory. The new rating for this edition is ’16’ and features, “realistic looking violence, nudity of a sexual nature, and strong language”.

Sony’s confirmed that the PS3 has sold more than 3 million units since its launch in March 2007, in France. The Xbox 360 has only managed to sell 2.3 million units in the country.

The figures, released by GFK charttrack are very solid and they also reveal that software sales for the console has bought in €418 million in revenue, which equal about 8 million units sold, this is far higher than both the Xbox 360 and Wii who has made €239 million and €337 million, respectively.

The PS3 has sold more than 42 million units worldwide since it’s launch.

The Trioviz for Games SDK allows 3D viewing on traditional 2D displays, and full 1080p support.

French outfit Darkworks has partnered with stereoscopic 3D specialists Trioviz SAS to create the technology, and they are currently looking at ways of synching it with the Playstyation 3.

“Launching with little support for console games, 3D TVs present a chicken-and-egg dilemma; consumers are waiting for a critical mass of 3D content to justify the purchase while developers are waiting for an installed base of 3D TVs that justifies the development investment,” said Jon Peddie, president of the Peddie Research Group.

“The Trioviz technology serves as an excellent bridging solution. Developers and publishers don’t have to invest in multiple 3D solutions for multiple platforms, and consumers can play the same 3D console title on their existing HDTVs and then on their new 3D TVs.”
