Ubisoft’s Freedom Cry DLC for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was originally intended to be just that – downloadable content. However, the desire to spin off Adewale’s quest into a standalone adventure arose, and now Assassin’s Creed IV: Freedom Cry is available for the PS3 and PS4.

You can still pick up the DLC for the original but this release is for those who only want to play Freedom Cry. It’s a standalone title that does’t require the original game to play, and it’s exclusive to the PS3 and PS4 for now. The PC version will be out on February 25th with no plans for an Xbox version.

Freedom Cry follows Adewale, formerly Edward Kenway’s first mate, as he works to free slaves and prove his own worth as a member of the Assassins Brotherhood. Adewale finally has his own video game as Ubisoft has announced that Freedom Cry, the first campaign based DLC for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, will be releasing as a standalone game tomorrow on PSN. It will be available for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in North America with a launch due in Europe later this week.

What distinguishes Freedom Cry now that it’s a standalone game? Not much – except you don’t need Assassin’s Creed IV in order to play it. It’s an odd equation for sure but for those who finished the game on another console and want to continue their quest on the PS3/PS4 without needing the original game, it’s worth a look.

Freedom Cry received decent reviews when it first released and centers around Adewale’s quest as an Assassin. You’ll be freeing slaves, hunting down mongrels and even meeting up Edward Kenway at some point. Thoughts on this development? Let us know below.

Ubisoft has finally announced the release date for the single-player DLC “Freedom Cry” for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. It will release on December 17th for Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC and December 18th for PS3 and PS4. Those who have purchased the Season Pass for the game will receive the DLC as part of the package.

The DLC will see players take on the role of Adewale, Edward Kenway’s first mate, as he embarks on his own adventure as an assassin. Composed of nine missions, the story takes place 15 years after the events of the main game and will see you starting off in Saint-Domingue. Though it hasn’t been revealed how, Adewale will eventually be rescuing slaves – which make sense considering he started life as one.

Meanwhile, those interested in multiplayer can pick up the Blackbeard’s Wrath DLC, now available for all platforms which adds three new characters, including Blackbeard himself, to the online experience.

The voyage of Edward Kenway in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag may have come to an end, but the universe is very much alive with DLC. Ubisoft Quebec is responsible for developing the Freedom Cry DLC, which sees side-character Adewale take center stage.

Creative director Wesley Pincombe spoke to Eurogamer about the same to Eurogamer, and stated that, “This is primarily an Adéwalé story – Edward isn’t present – but we do shoot a couple of lines back and forth with him reminiscing about his past.”

He also indicated that there would be clues for the next Assassin’s Creed hidden in the game. “There are some [hints] but our fans will only discover them in the future. They’re in your face, but you’d have to be a hardcore fan to understand them.”

As of now, the multiplayer-only Blackbeard’s Wrath DLC will release first, followed by Freedom Cry. What does the future hold for Assassin’s Creed? We’ll have to wait till next year (most likely before November 2014) to find out.

The latest issue of Game Informer seems to have revealed the release date for Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag’s DLC Freedom Cry. Freedom Cry’s content was previously teased by way of a leaked Trophies list, which indicated that you’ll be freeing slaves and fighting back against injustice. It was later revealed that players would be taking on the role of Adewale, Edward’s first mate, over a four hour storyline. Keep in mind that Adewale was freed by the time Black Flag started – so this serves as an epilogue where he sets out to free his kind.

Queen Anne’s Revenge
Playing as Blackbeard, perform an acrobatic kill and a gun kill in less than 10 seconds.

Preemptive Strike
Playing as The Orchid, block 10 abilities from opponents with Sabotage.

Elevator to the Gallows
Kill a player using a lift that has been trapped with Booby Trap.
