These diamonds-in-the-rough didn't get anywhere near the recognition they deserved.

The PS3 might be regarded by many as the dark horse of the PlayStation console family, but by the end of its lifecycle, the console had managed to accumulate an impressive library of excellent games nonetheless. Of course, a byproduct of that is that its library also had a fair few games that ended up flying under the radar for a great many players, even if they were deserving of far greater attention and recognition. Here, we’re going to talk about a few such PS3 titles that didn’t grab the masses the way they should have.

ENSLAVED: ODYSSEY TO THE WEST

Ever the masters of narrative-driven single-player experiences, back in 2010, Ninja Theory delivered Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, a game that many consider one of the studio’s best works ever to this day. Sadly, the game ended up a commercial failure. Though acclaimed by many for its storytelling, characters, performances, and its take on the classic Chinese tale of Journey to the West, for whatever reason, it failed to attract a sizeable audience.

Bigger isn't always better.

The allure of an open world game is something that most developers find very hard to ignore, and though there are many studios out there who do end up using all of that real estate in all the right ways, there are just as many who don’t do it nearly as well as they should. Whether it’s because of a lack of interesting content or a lack of content, period, all too often, open worlds in video games end up feeling barren, unengaging, uninteresting. Here, we’ll talk about a few such games.

METAL GEAR SOLID 5: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Metal Gear Solid 5 is and always will be a stealth masterpiece, and while nothing will even diminish the game’s mechanical strengths, its open world doesn’t quite stand as tall. The open world maps are full of vast stretches of nothing populated only by the occasional enemy patrol, and getting from point A to point B ends up feeling like a chore. The emergent sandbox of the game’s web of mechanics does alleviate some of those issues, but by and large, it’s hard to shake the feeling that The Phantom Pain’s open world wasn’t executed nearly as well as it could and should have been.

Bigger doesn't always mean better, and these ten games exemplify that all too well.

We all love a good open world game, and here at GamingBolt, we take every opportunity we get to gush on and on about some of our favourite ones. But maintaining a consistent level of quality across a massive open world experience isn’t exactly an easy task, and there have been more than a few examples of games over the years that have failed to do just that. Here, we’re going to talk about some of the worst open world games we’ve ever had the displeasure of playing.

DYNASTY WARRIORS 9

Dynasty Warriors as a series lives and dies by its large scale high-octane 1v1000 battles, and so, in Dynasty Warriors 9, Koei Tecmo and Omega Force, in their infinite wisdom, decided to… dilute that with an open world setting? This is a prime example of a series chasing a popular trend without any regard for whether or not that trend will be suited to its strengths. Worse still, not only did Dynasty Warriors 9’s open world detract from the game’s other strengths, it just wasn’t a very good open world to begin with itself.

Creating a compelling open world can be challenging. Here are 15 games that show a huge amount of potential but falter in one way or another.

Making an open world game can be extremely challenging, especially if you’re trying to balance a compelling narrative with player freedom, interesting level design and fun activities (while ensuring it all runs smoothly). Not every open world game can achieve some or all of that and the sheer hype around them can only amplify one’s disappointment. So let’s take a look at 15 of the most disappointing open world games that stumbled in one way or another.

Two Worlds

The timing of Two Worlds’ release, coming up after The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, might seem like it created lots of unfair expectations. Unfortunately, this wasn’t helped by developer Zuxxez proclaiming it to be “a more focused, grittier experience” than Oblivion with “much more complex” magic, a “more complex society” and more depth to the horse riding. The final result was a mess with graphical issues, a cliched story wrought with awful voice-acting, repetitive combat and bugs galore. Some of the environments looked nice and the world was appropriately large. But that “deep” horse riding was a nightmare to control, souring the experience all the more. Overall, Two Worlds is looked back upon as a meme and an albatross that it’s successor had to bear.

These are the biggest video game maps of all time.

As technology has evolved and allowed developers to do more impressive stuff in their games, video games in general have gotten larger and larger and expanded in scope. That’s not to say that we didn’t have large game worlds until recently, but we certainly have had a lot more of then in the last decade or so. In this feature, we’re going to talk about the biggest maps ever used in video games, and we’ll be counting down, beginning with #50, and ending with what is to this day the biggest video game map of all time.

Do keep in mind, that though it’s natural to assume that when we talk about big game maps, we might be talking about open world games only- but that’s not the case. Whether its an open world game, or an open ended game that’s not particularly open world, or a huge map that we’ve seen in multiplayer play- it’s all fair game for this list. Also, do keep in mind that randomly generated maps were not considered for this feature.

A final note before we begin- there’s every possibility that we might have missed out on some game you were expecting to see on this list, and if we did, it’s either because the exact sizes of their maps aren’t known to us, or because we simply forgot! If it’s the former, and you know what the sizes are, please tell us! If it’s the latter, please remind us.

So without further ado, let’s jump into it.

#50. ASSASSIN’S CREED UNITY

The open world action by developers Ubisoft has its fair share of issues, sure, but its world is one aspect that can’t be faulted. It’s a joy to explore, and it’s also pretty big. At about 2.4 km2, there’s more than enough space in this virtual world to explore and lose yourself in.

Codemasters racer FUEL may be the most open game ever created, according to producer Phil Wright. FUEL is arguably the most open-world game there is, Wright told VG247. Apart from the artificial boundaries at the edges of the game world, the only impediments to going where you want are natural, be that water, a sheer rock-face, or using the wrong type of vehicle (for example, trying to drive a road car up a steep slope off-road). It takes a few hours to drive from one edge of the landscape to another, but it can be done. The title, shipping at the end of May, features a meld of American environments, the collation of which was a labour of love for developer Asobo.

Asobo did a lot of research, using satellite image data of large areas of the more remote and wild parts of North America, including Mount Rainier, Crater Lake, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, to name a few, Wright added. Some of the team also took a long road trip into Wyoming, travelling hundreds of miles through vast wilderness gathering video footage and photographs in an effort to capture the epic scale they wanted to put across in the game. The resulting world in FUEL is a conglomeration of the more spectacular natural scenery from all of this data, a sort of best of the North American wilderness.FUEL hits 360 and PS3 on May 31. Theres a PC version as well, but we can’t find a date for it right now.
