Undertale may be coming to Nintendo's quirky console.

Undertale is one of the surprise success stories of last year- the quirky retro RPG came out of nowhere on the PC, where it swiftly garnered a fan following for its unique story and storytelling, and went on to subsequently get some rave reviews. The game would go on to win multiple fan polls for ‘Greatest Game Ever,’ including GameFAQs’, and it would also sell a million copies worldwide, according to SteamSpy. It would also go on to win GamingBolt’s own coveted Indie Game of the Year award.

It is, in other words, an indie game success story, the kind of indie breakout hit that systems undoubtedly want to be associated with. And apparently, now, one of the big three is reaching out to the developer of Undertale, to have the game put on their system. The surprising thing is, it’s neither Microsoft, nor Sony- it’s Nintendo who are doing it.

Posting on his Twitter (the Tweet has since been deleted), Nintendo of America’s Akinwale Lakeru, who is their head of developer support, reached out to Toby Fox, the developer of Undertale, requesting a chance to talk. Fox later confirmed that Nintendo had reached out to him, saying, “It’s surreal that it’s newsworthy that a Nintendo rep tweeted at me. I actually already talked to Nintendo about a port months ago, but Game Maker (what I use) doesn’t export to any Nintendo platforms.”

Which, of course, may be the reason why Nintendo reached out to Fox in the first place- they may want to discuss how to bring Game Maker over to 3DS or Wii U, or maybe the enigmatic Nintendo NX. They’re hardly the only ones offering to help Fox, too, since Broken Rules, who have previously been responsible for some excellent ports to the Wii U, have publicly offered to help with the porting process on Twitter as well.

So, it looks like there is a lot of interest in bringing Undertale to Nintendo (which makes sense, after all, Nintendo pioneered this style of game with Earthbound)- now we just have to see if the pieces fall into place, and if so, which system Undertale will be headed to.
