With over 2 million G in Gamerscore.

Achievements and Trophies are now commonplace, but it is easy to forget how new and fresh the concept of a universal and persistent progress tracker for games tied to your online presence was back in 2005, when the Xbox 360 first launched. That gave Xbox a hell of a head start on the concept- universal Trophies weren’t a thing on PSN until 2008, and are still not a thing on Steam or Nintendo.

So it should come as no surprise that there are now over 100,000 Achievements on Xbox Live- these are spread across Xbox 360 and Xbox One games (as well as Games for Windows Live, Windows Phone, Windows 8, and Windows 10), both retail and Xbox Live. 3100 titles have now launched with achievements, with a total of 2,300,227 Gamerscore spread between them. That’s a lot of Gamerscore points, guys.

Achievements are still a thing on Xbox One, though they have evolved far past their initial conception on Xbox One- the 1000G limit for games no longer seems to apply, and Achievements, as well as their associated rewards, are more sophisticated now.

It was a genius, progressive move by Microsoft- which is the reason it became an industry standard like it did.

More Capcom games jump ship.

As Games for Windows Live winds down, the question of what will happen to games that depended on the service for their online infrastructure looms large in many people’s mind. Today, we got at least a partial answer to that question, as Capcom confirmed that three of its more high profile PC releases- Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising: Off the Record, and Resident Evil 5- will be migrating over to Steamworks early next year to provide a framework for online play.

“With the global popularity of the Steamworks platform, we’ve seen high demand from fans to bring these highly requested titles to this platform,” Capcom said.

“Moving to Steamworks will allow more fans across the world to enjoy these games.”

If you already own the games, they will automatically be transitioned over to the new platform, so you don’t need to worry about rebuying the titles, or adding non Steam games to your library.

Another one bites the dust.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, the acclaimed flight sim and combat game from Namco Bandai games, released on PC a few years ago, and it made use of Microsoft’s detested and despised Games for Windows Live DRM. Over the years, Microsoft has winded support for it down, and titles previously using the service either ditched any form of DRM or migrated to Steam altogether.

One of the last holdouts was Ace Combat, and now, Eurogamer reports that an upcoming update will let users ditch GFWL for that game as well. The game will migrate to Steamworks, and let you keep your save files and your achievements, so it is a very well done, thoughtful update as these things go.

Games for Windows Live shuts down in July 2014; Microsoft is reportedly re-investing in PC gaming this year, but exactly what form this investment takes (and whether it will be as ghastly as GFWL was) remains to be seen.

The overhaul of Live begins.

In a recent statement, Microsoft has announced that it will no longer be selling PC via the Xbox.com marketplace after August 22nd. Of course, you can still play any titles previously purchased through Games for Windows Live, and the service will still continue to operate. However, whether third party titles that are available on the service will continue to be sold, along with any of their DLC, is up to the respective publishers.

The reason for this change is to ultimately usher in the update of Xbox Live overall for the release of the Xbox One. This will include the end of Microsoft Points, used for purchasing games on the Marketplace, and the introduction of payment systems using real money, similar to the PlayStation Store.

Considering how Games for Windows Live’s growth has been horribly stunted in comparison to services like Steam and even Origin, it only makes sense for Microsoft to consolidate resources elsewhere.
