Apple continues to struggle with non-iPhone products.

Apple has released their most recent quarterly earning numbers, and despite a rise in the sale of their most popular product, the iPhone, their numbers show a significant decrease from the same quarterly period last year. This year’s total revenue was $35.3 billion, with the net profit being $6.9 billion. Still nothing to scoff at, but when compared to last years quarterly earning or $35 billion in revenue, and $8.8 billion in net profit, we can see that there has been almost a $2 billion dollar drop in profit. There’s no not noticing that kind of money disappearing.

Apple reports that while their iPhone sales rose from 26 million to 31.2 million, sales of iPads and Mac computers dropped by a combined almost 4 million.

Apple is hopeful that their new OS and line of products will help them bounce back from the profit decline. Apple CEO Tom Cook had this to say, “”We are especially proud of our record June quarter iPhone sales of over 31 million and the strong growth in revenue from iTunes, software and services. We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014.”

With this loss in profit on tech, it’s fair to assume that Apple could be considering throwing its hat into the console gaming ring, especially with the huge success of the iOS mobile gaming platform.

Do you think Apple is headed for console development?

Chi Onwurah concerned about the sociological and industrial trends of women in the gaming industry.

If you thought the case of equality for women in the gaming industry was limited to professionals themselves, then Labour MP Chi Onwurah’s comments in British Parliament recently will change your mind.

Speaking to the House of Commons, Onwurah stated that, “It is certainly the case that the video games industry is a modern one; one would hope that it would be reflective of society, including those who play games, but it is not.

“My figures show that only 6 per cent of those who work in ICT in the UK games industry are women, despite the fact that they make up 50 per cent of those who play the games.”

Rather hilariously (and sadly), two major companies that refused to provide information on their percentage of female employees on confidentiality grounds are Microsoft and Google.

“That is rather strange, because it suggests either that Google and Microsoft do not know how to aggregate and anonymity such information – which, given that they are leaders in big data management, is worrying – or that they have so few women employees that giving the figure would necessarily identify individuals. That is also very worrying.

“I am worried that Microsoft and Google, which are role models in their own right, do not appear to want to let anyone know how well – or how badly – they are doing.”

Onwurah spoke about doing more than just providing “mere warm words”. “As well as improving the image of ICT, we need to look at the working environment of women in ICT, and at higher, secondary and, very importantly, primary education, which my hon. Friend mentioned, and careers advice. We also need to look at our culture, which socializes girls to think that ICT is not for them.”

We’ve all seen the Angry German Kid raging at his Unreal Tournament game, but what about the real freakouts? Here are some gamers who have just hit the wall.

In some cases, literally.

10. Jacob

Classic quote: “You ****! Now I can’t join session with him!”

Ever wondered if 9 year olds really do play Halo? Well here’s your answer, and its not pretty. Granted, Mr Cameraman is pretty mean, but I bet you weren’t expecting this…

9. Gameboy fun

Classic quote: “NO! Why’s the game making me go there!”

It looks like children don’t just rage on the 360.

8. Married couples

Classic quotes: “I’m sick of fighting!”

Yes, even couples play video games! And this couple appear to be having some…growing pains.

7. Runescape freakout

Classic quote: “Dude, why don’t you just make a new account? ” “I won’t have any levels, I won’t have any rankings, I won’t even know how to make a FIRE!”

Losing ones account to anything can be a frustrating experience. For some more than others. Apparently this kid was so pissed off, he doesn’t have the will to use the toilet.

6. The F Man

Classic quote: *censored*

When every second word that comes out of your mouth is a curse, maybe it’s time to hang up the joypad.

5. The Modern Warfare 2 animal

Classic quote: “Aaaaaaaaaaah!”

I have to admit, I’m not really sure what this is. Possibly some small rodent.

Playing MW2.

Update: This video is no longer available.

4. Why you shouldn’t play games for extended periods of time

Classic quote: “I’ve been playing Call of Duty for 17 hours straight…”

We’ve all pulled an all-nighter before; hunkered down with a beer in one hand, controller in the other, nachos spilled over the floor and covered in a big warm duvet. But 17 hours straight? It all just got a little too much.

Update: This video is no longer available.

3. 74 million is worth a lot these days

Classic quote: “He smited me then it all went downhill, everything went blury…”

It’s not fun to get killed in any game, but when you die in Runescape, you die in real life you can lose a lot of virtual items. Watch what happens when this kid loses his virtual life savings.

Update: This video is no longer available.

2. Don’t mess with her…

Classic quote: “You know where I am…you fatass motherfu****”

I hate to say it, but maybe there really is a correlation between WoW and gaming freakouts. This one is a little different however, our friend here is threatening her guild members with a big pole. Nice.

Update: This video is no longer available.

1. The Greatest Freak Out Ever

What better way to round off this list than with the Greatest Freak Out Ever. Meet Stephen. He’s angry and a little scary.

Update: This video is no longer available.

Easter eggs, in our context, are defined as an intentional hidden message, in-joke or feature in an object such as a movie, book, CD, DVD, computer program, web page or video game.

In other words, it’s the developers hidden little secrets that only the most determined gamer will unearth. GamingBolt has been trawling through our back catalogue of our favourite games to find some of gaming’s best easter egg funnies.

Adventure

Easter Egg: First!

Most of you probably will have never heard of the game Adventure, but upon release on the Atari 2600 in 1979, it became the first game to have an easter egg- a secret room with the words ‘Created by Warren Robinett’ written inside.

Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony

Easter Egg: RRoD

Go to your safehouse and look at the left had side of the TV. It’s pretty gloomy, but you should be able to make out an Xbox 360 with the dreaded Red Rings of Death. This was found on the PS3 version.

Half Life Source

Easter Egg: Valve brand coffee

On the level Office Complex, the employee lounge has one very familiar looking coffee machine…

Diablo II

Easter Egg: The Secret Cow Level

Blizzard have always been known for having a little humour about their games, as shown by the numerous pop culture references found in World of Warcraft. But Diablo II introduced a whole new level with this easter egg; once you have acquired the leg of Wirt and defeated Diablo, go back to town and transmute. You will find a portal to a level known only as the Secret Cow Level. And yep, you guessed it, it is filled with Hell’s beef, all looking to devour your brains. They’re high levels though, so understand the challenge you are taking on!

Metal Gear Solid

Easter Egg: Only awkward teenage boys need apply!

Although Metal Gear Solid contains enough easter eggs to fill a small book, this one stands out from the rest. Before freeing her or the DARPA chief from prison, you can peer down on them from a ceiling vent. Keep popping your head in and out of the vent and you will see the different stages of her workout routine- including one where she buffs up wearing just her underwear.

Batman Arkham Asylum

Easter Egg: Jason X

Just before the final boss fight, there is a room with Joker on a TV screen. Just as you enter the room, to your left there is a sofa and some papers up on a wall. If you zoom in on one of the papers, you will see a drawing of Jason with a chainsaw.

Fallout 3

Easter Egg: Alien Blaster

You can find this easter egg as soon as you step into the Wasteland. Go to Minefield, and head directly north until you find a crashed UFO. You will pick up a radio transmission called, “Recon Craft Theta Beacon”. Follow this noise until you spot another UFO in the mountains. Nearby is a dead alien clutching a gun- the Alien Blaster, and the most powerful weapon in the game.

Far Cry

Easter Egg: Road Hogs

You ever seen a pig driving a buggy? No? Me neither.

But to see it done in Far Cry, simply park a buggy in an awkward place (ie on a flight of steps) then wait in nearby shrubs for a few minutes. It does take a while, but eventually a pig will appear and start driving the buggy!

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction

Easter Egg: The Wilhelm Scream

For those of you that don’t know, the Wilhelm Scream is a widely used and clichéd technique used in films when a character dies. Just type ‘Wilhelm Scream’ into Youtube. But Mercenaries put on of their own into the game; go to any city and use your field scope to zoom in on Wilhelm (he looks just like an ordinary civilian, but the word underneath will say ‘Wilhelm’ instead of ‘civilian’). Now all you have to do is shoot him to hear the infamous Wilhelm Scream!

Doom 3

Easter Egg: Rude Marines

At the beginning of the game when you are handed your Palm Pilot by the man at the kiosk, the seller will start typing on his computer. Hover next to him and read the message…

Tony Hawk’s Underground

Easter Egg: Mortal Kombat

On the level THUG, skate about until you come across a snowman. If you Boneless over him just right, you’ll knock off his head and your screen will flash the word FATALITY!- a reference to the MK games of old.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Easter Egg: Bill Gates

On the Hokkaido mission, there are two guards talking about their new vehicle. One of them mentions that he has just got a 640 gigabyte mp3 player. The other one scoffs, saying you don’t need that much. This is a reference to Bill Gates infamous statement made back in 1981, ‘640K is more memory than anyone will ever need.’

Saints Row 2

Easter Egg: The Game Studio

In the North Shore Marina District, there is a building with shops on the waterfront called the North Shore Marina Super Mall. There is a glass tunnel that runs through the center of the building, which contains a vending machine and a door next to it. Go in the door and into the room on the other side and you will find ‘The Game Studio’ written on the wall along with a picture of one of the game designers.

Resident Evil 4

Easter Egg: More perverts

If the semi-naked ladies in Metal Gear Solid aren’t enough for you, Resident Evil has some more perversion for you. At any point when Ashley is climbing down a ladder, or waiting on a ledge to be caught, you can aim at an angle up her skirt, to her shocked reaction.

Hitman: Blood Money

Easter Egg: Bizarre

Chock full of easter eggs, Blood Money has a couple that really stand out. On the Till Death Do Us Part level, you will find a fight going on in the front garden. Go round to the left hand side of the house and look on the ground for a little button. Shoot it, and the fighting men will come running over to you wearing only their undershorts and applauding.

Half Life 2

Easter Egg: Backwards makes perfect

On the zombies level, set one of them on fire and record the sound they make. It will probably sound like gibberish, although you may be able to make out the words ‘Hot!’ or similar. However, when you reverse the sounds and play them backwards you can quite clearly hear them saying ‘God help me!’.

God of War

Easter Egg: David Jaffe

Once you have destroyed the Ares and Minotaur statues in The Throne Room, an audio clip will play…it’s David Jaffe himself!

Grand Theft Auto 4

Easter Egg: Mad Cow Disease

In the meat quarter there is a building called ‘Minster Meat Marker’. On the outside wall there are some billboards advertising fake meat brands, one of which is C.J Dees Beef. This is a reference to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, commonly referred to as Mad Cow Disease. It was a widespread disease that prompted the slaughter of thousands of cows in the 90’s around the time GTA 2 was being developed.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Easter Egg: 1337

Even Infinity Ward have souls! On the multiplayer map ‘Derail’ on one of the blue freight trains it has the ref. number 1337.

1337y.

Company of Heroes

Easter Egg: EA suxs!

To continue the theme of 1337- speak, Company of Heroes has a neat little egg you can find on any skirmish or multiplayer mission. Build a jeep and look at the front license plate- you will see it says ‘3A5UX5’, or in leet-speak, ‘EA Suxs’ !

Just Cause 2

Easter Egg: Lost

Remember that TV show that went on for about 10 series too many about a group of people on an island? To obtain this egg, you must first get into any plane, and fly it towards the island in the North-West. Fly for long enough, and your plane will eventually burst into flames, forcing you to parachute down onto an island- an exact replica of the island in Lost.

World of Warcraft

Easter Egg: Fowl

While it’s easy to mistake simple references to pop culture with Eggs in WoW, this one is definitely an Egg. Go up to any chicken, and do the chicken dance for it by using the /chicken command. You will have to do this many, many times, but eventually, the chicken will start following you around- and will never stop!

Legend of Zelda

Easter Egg: Extra quest mode

By far the most ‘extra’ egg on this list, this Egg unlocks a whole second quest mode. Simply type your name in as Zelda when prompted.

Ah the NES, fond memories.

Well I sure hope you’ve enjoyed reading about all the hidden eggs the dev’s did(n’t!) want you to find! From the wacky to the wholesome, they’re all here- and now you had better go off and find them!

Got your own eggs you want to add? Leave them in the comments below.

3D is coming to video games within the next few years whether we like it or not, but is it just a fad? It’s time to find out.

First off, just the term itself is rather confusing. Many of you may remember Duke Nukem 3D, one of the first first-person shooters to contain fully fledged 3D models. It looked rather like this.

However, when people refer to 3D nowadays, they mean stereoscopic 3D. That is, a technique used to give the illusion of actual depth to flat, 2D images. It’s not a new thing- Stereoscopy was invented in 1838 by a Sir Charles Wheatstone. And with the advent of films such as Avatar, we knew it wouldn’t be long until games cottoned on to the idea.

Now I don’t know about you, but I view 3D, in any form of media, as pretty gimmicky. That’s because, it’s never really 3D- half the time, it is just 2 layers of images; the foreground where the characters are, and the background, and this doesn’t really add much depth.

Plus, current 3D viewing requires everyone to wear silly glasses like this;

So far then, 3D gaming isn’t looking so hot. But what about practicalities? Surely stereoscopic 3D can lead to enhanced gameplay?

With the impending releases of Sony’s Move and Microsoft’s Natal, 3D gaming could soon become on of necessity. It would certainly make things easier. Imagine being able to reach into the image in front of you, or squeeze the trigger of a weapon in your hand as waves of minions charge out of your telly.

However,”it will be technically difficult to match up user perceptions of space with what the motion control hardware can capture,” says Cohort Studios’ Peter Walsh.

Dell Product Manager Adam Griffin added, “More generally, there is still a lot of work to be done, with things like first person shooter games, for example. You look at the cross-hairs on some fps games, and it sits right in front of your eyes in 3D, which is really not a comfortable playing position for it to be. But there is definitely an opportunity for PC gaming companies to reinvent some of their key PC games for the 3D experience.”

Not to mention how uncomfortable 3D glasses can be. But with Nintendo’s 3DS, will this change?

The 3DS comes equipped with two screens – one 3D screen and one touchscreen – a motion sensor, a gyro sensor, and analogue pad and a 3D depth slider so players can toggle between 3D and 2D screen settings. Those lucky few who experienced the 3DS for themselves at E3 all claimed afterwards that the 3D slider gave a great effect, which allows you to shift the image anywhere between the awesomeness of no-glasses 3D and a flat 2D image (which might benefit some games).

Sony’s Playstation 3 is also ready to support 3D, with a handful of games already set to jump out of your screens. MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, WipEout HD and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue all support 3D- provided you can fork out $2000 for the TV too. However, unlike Nintendo’s witchcraft technology, the PS3 will require those uncomfortable glasses to be viewed in all it’s multi-dimentional glory.

Microsoft has been somewhat more stubborn when it comes to 3D gaming on their console- but a photo snapped in a South Korean gaming conference suggests the 360 may one day be played with those funny glasses.

All in all, it looks like it’s a toughie to give a verdict on this one. 3D in some games and films can turn out to be an anti-climax, an annoyance, even a distraction. But when Microsoft and Sony bring out their big guns later this year, we could see 3D turning into an incredible, surreal experience.

“The second step that we can all agree on is to invest more in preventive care so that we can avoid illness and disease in the first place. That starts with each of us taking more responsibility for our health and the health of our children. It means quitting smoking, going in for that mammogram or colon cancer screening. It means going for a run or hitting the gym, and raising our children to step away from the video games and spend more time playing outside.”

– Barack Obama

So videogames are a health concern are they? Is anyone else getting positively sick of people constantly bashing video games?

I know I am.

The mass media loves to demonise video games. And while that on it’s own wouldn’t really bother me (more for me, ho ho!), it’s the people that clearly know nothing about games. Take the recent Alan Tichmarsh show, involving a debate about the ethics of videogames and their effect on children.

Update: This video is no longer available.

Wow, what a great opening Alan. Barely 10 seconds in, the host demonstrates quite clearly that he knows nothing about video games. Call of Duty 2 Modern Warfare? At least get the numbers in the right place. He then proceeds to list off a couple of M rated video games to have released in the last 6 months or so.

But guess what Alan- 95% of video games are not rated Mature! Meanwhile, throughout the rest of the show the other members of the panel do their very best to pull imaginary numbers out of their arsehole (don’t listen to the woman, no studies have ever conclusively proved a link between addictive/violent games and behavioural issues in children).

Another example was back in 2006, when shortly after the release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas many US politicians started pointing nasty fingers at video games too.

And naturally, middle class parents are at it too.

Is anyone noticing a trend? All the anti-video game arguments love pulling a couple of trump cards. The first is the hyper-controversial Grand Theft Auto series. ‘You can let prostitutes service you and then kill them to get your money back!’ Oh no, the humanity. Maybe if you took one look at the front cover of any GTA game you would see it is rated M, or 18. For those politicians/hosts/parents that cannot understand the bright red ring with the number 18 printed on it, this symbol means it can only be legally sold to those over the age of 18 (or 17, if it says M for Mature).

And more recently, the major trump card has been the No Russian level in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Yes you shoot civilians. But you can also skip it. This level is less of an exercise in brutality than it is a slightly abstract look on the ethics of war. Innocent people die every day. Just because it’s in a game doesn’t mean it’s an excuse to go batshit crazy, but nor is it an excuse to brush off the horrible things that happen to people in wartime. But it’s not like Modern Warfare 2 is the first media form to demonstrate the killing of civilians on a more simplistic level. Films (The Hurt Locker, Blood Diamond, Hotel Rwanda) have done it countless times before.

And why are we all picking on the gaming industry? Surely even the ability to blow someone’s head off in a colourful mess in an alternate universe where it is clearly not reality is better than this (NSFW).

Update: This video is no longer available.

It’s a funny thing that these videogame bashers never talk about the bonuses of gaming though. For one, gaming is not the lonely habit of some spotty teenager who sits in a basement all day long. Online games can be very social, and give you the ability to be a good sportsman. You will never always win, and you have to deal with this regularly as a gamer.

Competetive games also encourage teamwork. Look at Battlefield: Bad Company 2. No team will ever win without a mixture of classes all working together. Without medics to heal and revive, engineers to repair and snipers to spot, you will quickly be overrun.

Gaming is also a way to relieve stress. It has been shown that a 15 or 20 minute game session can help you relax by taking you to a fictional world where worries are few, and consequences are, frankly, inconsequential. You can read up the study here. But I don’t want to lower myself to the level of our Alan Tichmarsh friends by endlessly pulling studies and statistics out of thin air. Anyone can do that.

Naturally some games are very simple shooters, mindless games with little depth. But others, particularly strategy games such as Company of Heroes, Men of War and the Total War series reward tactical thinking and quick judgement, while a game like Halo rewards fast reactions.

It’s really unfortunate that most of the people in power these days feel that just because they’re surrounded by armed guards that they can sling mud at any topic which takes their fancy. How many politicians have even played a video game before? Oh sure, there are physcos, there are atrocities, and the media loves pointing out that just because someone has been near a videogame in the last ten years it means that’s why they murdered someone- but take a step back. Videogames aren’t evil, they aren’t a health issue- but like everything in this world, they need to be controlled and taken in moderation.

Stencyl, a software platform that allows aspiring individual developers to create their own games simply and easily, has just had it’s first few games emerge.

The tool, which has been in development for a number of years, can be used to create a multitude of games- from platformers, to action, to shooting gallery games. Just take a look at this game, Gourd. In the words of Irock, the game’s creator, “Stencyl seems to follow the idea that everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.” Said Irock.

“Everything, from the point where I start my game to the point where I publish my game, makes sense, and it doesn’t limit what you can do. If I want to do something in StencylWorks, all I need is my own logic; I never had to learn anything that goes against my way of thinking.”

So what’s next for Gourd? “Stencyl has gotten my dream further than it ever would have gotten using any other toolset, and I still have a lot to do with Gourd before I can hang up my hat on this project. My next steps are to work on more graphics, design some fun and unique levels and work on the graphical user interface.”

Not only that, but more graphically complex games can be created with Stencyl too. Put simply, Stencyl is a powerful tool that doesn’t require C++ knowledge or a hugely in-depth understanding of scripting in order to understand.

The aptly named Tower Tank by Trey is one of 4 fully functioning games out there- check them out here. Trey described the process that took him from beta-participant to indie game developer, “I started development on February 24th and ended it one week later on March 3rd. First, I laid the foundation for the graphics.”

“Second, I added simple graphics, like a big yellow block for the tank and a basic sprite for the first enemy helicopter. From there, I continued to add detail until I was happy with the results.”

So if you’re reading this while catching yourself salivating, or even if you aren’t, you can check out Stencyl hands-on if you join the beta. It’s a private beta at the moment though, so no promises.

Some gaming gadget companies love designing new wacky peripherals to snap onto your console. Unfortunately, some of these attempts at deeper immersion, or more flexibility don’t always come out the way they weer planned. In fact, some of them are downright dangerous, and it’s all too possible to envision a old grandma taking a kick to the face, or your little brother getting punched out cold.

6. Wii Boxing Gloves

In an attempt to make your Wii Boxing experience even more intense, Everlast have come of with a unique way of hurting your fellow players using thinly padded gloves with the Wiimote and Nunchuck attached to them. While the results could be hilarious, they could also be extremely painful (moreso when peoplego for the old below-the-belt).

The Wii platform as a whole has introduced a whole new world of hurt to those young ‘uns who least expect it, but I bet you never thought playing the Wii could….

5. Wii Bowl

…get a plastic ball hurled at your $1200, 50″ TV. This Wii-Bowl is designed so that next time you play Wii Bowling you get to actually, well, bowl. It’s not supposed to actually come out of your hand, but then again neither was this dog, which some schmuck dropped off a bridge because he believed dogs could fly. However, while you’re getting punched in the face and chucking your balls around, an even worse gaming peripheral is just around the corner to….

4. Wii Light Sabers

…stab you. These two 12″ swords are not the kind of things you want waving around while playing a hack ‘n slash. When I want 30cm of plastic embedded in my eye socket, I’ll let you know, CTA Digital.

3. Guitar Hero Guitar

I bet you guys never thought about the dangers of that spiky guitar shaped cattle prod in the corner though. Unlike the many Wii peripherals, the Guitar Hero Guitar is not designed to be thrown manically around the room until it makes a firm connection with your brother’s throat; no, the Guitar is simply designed to be held and played. However, 2 teens jamming away on Guitar Hero II were more than a little shocked when they were electrocuted by a bolt of lightning firing at their house, through the guitars and into them.

2. Project Natal

We imagine that you might end up doing this to your mother as she walks into the room to find out why there are broken vases everywhere.

Totally ditching controllers in favour of basically turning your whole body into one, Natal might appear safer than controller-related motion control. But what happens when you want to try and kick someone in the face while playing Virtua Fighter?

1. Gaming Vest

So you’ve managed to punch, kick and stab yourself and others, as well as breaking every fragile object in your living room. Still looking for that masochistic satisfaction that you crave? Look no further than the gaming vest. “The vest includes a multitude of solenoids, eccentric-mass motors, and Peltier elements controlled by custom electronics” in order to simulate, ” the feeling of bullet hit [or] body impact”. Wowzers that sounds like fun. I mean, who doesn’t want the feeling of loads of tiny powerful motors trying to burrow their way inside your skin like something out of the matrix?

Still looking for ways to hurt yourself? Check out some of the wierdest games consoles ever created here.

Gaming has come a long way in the last 10 years. At GB, we were wondering what it might be like in another 10 years.

And by gum has it come a heck of a way. Think about the obvious one, graphics. Take yourself back to the year 2000. Arguably the best looking game of the year was Giants: Citizen Kabuto. It looked like this;

For a decade old game, it actually looks alright. But lets contrast that with a game from 2009;

No contest. Of course, I mean, why should there be?

Now by and large games have improved in just about every concievable way since 2000, but it is difficult to measure anything other than graphics. The issue now is; have we reached our peak in gameplay? Have we actually managed to create a selection of games that are just so darn fun, they can’t get any better?

Whether yes or no, the truth is that game developers are now looking to branch out in other ways than staples of graphics, gameplay, sound and presentation.

The Possibilities…

3D Gaming

It is my firm belief that 3D gaming will become a mainstream part of gaming by 2020. I believe the change will be gradual, yes, and for the majority of the time, optional. For example, I don’t think that 3D gaming will be the compulsory way to game for many years to come, if ever.

However, we have (briefly and occasionally) seen how incredible 3D can be. We have even seen evidence that Sony may be embarking on some 3D escapades in the near future.

So what state will 3D Gaming be in games in 2020?

GB prediction: Mainstream, but optional for the most part.

Mind Control

Mind control I hear you say? Yes, controlling games with your mind. That might seem like something out of a sci-fi magazine, but it is a possibility. One working example is Emotiv’s EPOC headset. By picking up electrical impulses from your brain, the headset translates the brainwaves into movement on screen. It’s really only in its early stages, although the product can be purchased (for approx. $300).

So mind control headsets involved in games are still pretty far off, but they aren’t simply a pipe dream. I reckon that by 2020, the technology will at least have advanced enough for some game developers to be designing products with this kind of thing in mind.

So what state will Mind Control be in games in 2020?

GB prediction: Not mainstream, but definitely being considered by developers.

Motion Control

Motion control is something that is already being used in many modern games. The Wii started it, the PS3 attempted to copy it with the Sixaxis and now Microsoft is attempting to better it with Natal.

Now, it’s my personal opinion that motion control is a pretty lame way to game. Why anyone would want to jump up and down while waving their arms in a variety of disconcerting ways is beyond me. However, motion control in games is becoming bigger, better and more sophisticated. If you look at something like Natal, you can see just how incredible it can be. This is a trend that is not going to end soon.

So what state will motion control be in games in 2020?

GB prediction: Very mainstream, featured in most games, sometimes obligatory

Neverending Games

This is something that we have seen attempted by a few developers now, but it’s never really been perfected. Tom Clancy’s EndWar is probably the best example of a game that attempted to bring about a never-ending online experience, but ultimately it didn’t really work out.

But there is hugely untapped potential here. Maybe in the future massive MAG-esque battles would take place, with thousands of players on one gigantic map, fighting a massive war anyone could jump into, and the fighting never stops…? Who knows what might happen, but this is a feature that could well be in use by 2020.

So what state will neverending games be in 2020?

GB prediction: Probably being used in some games.

The Sillies

Virtual Reality

And by virtual reality, we of course mean a great bloody hampster ball that looks alarming like a giant testicle. Virtual reality is something that has been in the works for some time now, so it’s rather disappointing that our best attempt is running around in a 10-foot sphere where one slipped disc could send you flying.

The idea is, you wear a suit and eyepiece, sometimes accompanied by a weapon or wand, and walk about as if in real life. However, as we can cleary see, this is not yet a domestic device, and probably won’t be by 2020 either.

The Dream Machine

Sounding remarkably like some kind of kinky tripping device, the Dream Machine is a large harness that aims to place gamers right in the action. Instead of using pesky controllers, you can simply roll around in a set of straps that would closely resemble a sex swing if you removed the handlebars…or maybe not.

While the idea looks kind of cool on paper, the possibilities for injuries are numerous and unpleasant, and it looks pretty retarded when sitting in it. Oh yeah, and it’s a pretty epic fail if a girl comes round.

Those are some sweet rigs too by the looks of things, but all the zooming in the world won’t tell us what’s under the hood.
