A mix of three different games for the streaming service.

The PlayStation Now service is the original gaming streaming service and as that technology advances and more people get in on it, well, Sony already has a pretty solid footing. The service has a good selection of titles, and this month it will potentially add three more, all of different varieties.

First up is Rainbow Six Siege, the very popular ongoing shooter from Ubisoft that has seen continued updates since its launch in 2015. The second title is The Evil Within 2, the follow up to the acclaimed survival horror title, and finally Get Even, a unique first person shooter in a tale of revenge.

As of now there has been no official announcement about these games joining PS Now, but some people are already reporting they are able to access and play them. So, most likely they have gone live a little early, but for now we’ll treat this as a rumor, though it seems a good bet it’ll be made official soon.

So many different shooters, but one reigns supreme.

Shooters remain the most popular genre on the market. And even in a year like 2017, which has seen the slow popularization of RPGs and open world action adventures, as well as many long anticipated shooters underwhelming players, we managed to get multiple superlative entries in the genre that will be talked about for years to come. Now, we recognize the best of them.

NOMINEES

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy:

Naughty Dog’s follow up to Uncharted 4 was better than it had any right to be. Freed from the shackles of following Drake’s increasing emotional baggage, the new game instead follows Nadine and Chloe on their adventures through the Western Ghats in India, delivering a short, snappy, and well paced and fun adventure that took on the best qualities of Uncharted 4’s gameplay to deliver one of the standout games of the year.

Cuphead:

Truly the Dark Souls of shooters—and we don’t mean that as a joke. This side scrolling run and gun game is exacting and brutally difficult, relying on pattern recognition, and all too eager to punish sloppy players. Cuphead is a marvel- the gorgeous art is probably what will catch your eye at first, but it will be the incredible gunplay and the thrill of conquering a hard boss that will keep you playing for days to come.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands:

GTA with friends- that’s the pitch of Wildlands, which puts you in an open world reimagining of Bolivia, and lets you buddy up with friends for all sorts of co-op mayhem. Mechanically, Wildlands is sound, if unremarkable—but it is the life it takes on when played with friends that makes it stand out. Throw in exceptional post launch support, such as the newly added PvP mode, and this is doubtless one game we will be talking about for a while to come.

Call of Duty WW2:

After a few off years, Call of duty roared back into form this year, returning to its World War 2 roots and reminding us all why we fell in love with this franchise to begin with. Featuring a cinematic, thrilling campaign, combined with an excellent multiplayer offering with some truly forward thinking ideas, Call of Duty: WW2 is without a doubt one of the best shooters of 2017.

Destiny 2:

Bungie’s follow up to their troubled shared world shooter is flawed, but its flaws only grate more because of how sound the core offering is. Destiny 2 retains the fun gunplay and addictive systemization of the original game, while also removing a lot of the fluff that plagued the original game, and layering on an actual meaningful campaign. It still has a way to go, and Bungie has recently announced updates to the game to fix it and make it more compelling for series veterans—but that only cements our love for the game even more.

Wolfensien II – The New Colossus:

Bethesda and MachineGames followed up on the 2014’s Wolfenstein with The New Colossus, and the new title lives up to the legacy of the original game. Creating a terrifyingly realized rendition of an alternate history in which the Nazis won, and pairing it with some high octane action, Wolfenstein 2 is a gloriously fun shooter which has something meaningful to say—something that is increasingly rare in today’s day and age.

Splatoon 2:

Nintendo’s follow up to their hit Wii U multiplayer shooter takes everything that was great about the original, and delivers it as is on the Nintendo Switch—but it adds some twists of its own. Whether via way of minor quality of life improvements, or the excellent Salmon Run co-op horde mode, or a great new campaign, or the amazing post launch support which has continued to add hundreds of new weapons, gear pieces, and many new maps—all for free, Splatoon 2 is a compelling, addictive shooter that remains one of the definitive experiences on the Switch.

Metroid: Samus Returns:

Metroid Prime 4 may be a way away, but Nintendo brought back Samus Aran in a big way with the fittingly titled Samus Returns, a remake of Metroid 2: Return of Samus for the Nintendo 3DS. More a reimagining in the framework of the older game than a remake, Samus Returns reminds us of why the Metroid franchise was so great and beloved to begin with, by sidestepping the loss of focus and vision that had plagued the last few entires in the series, and delivering a pure, compelling Metroid adventure—and one of the best shooters of the year.

Sniper Elite 4:

The long running fan favorite Sniper Elite 4 returned for its fourth outing this year, and delivered the best entry in the series yet. Adding in the scope for emergent dynamism from something like The Phantom Pain with the excellent gunplay and stealth the Sniper Elite series has always been known for, this is one game that deserves all the love and recognition that it can get- because warts and all, it is truly unique and compelling.

Nex Machina:

Nex Machina will be HouseMarque’s last arcade twin stick shooter, but what a way it is to sign off. Taking the same formula that made Resogun, Alienation, and Dead Nation so bloody compelling and thrilling, HouseMarque has delivered a frenetic, frantic shooter that demands a kind of mastery of the game’s rhythm that you can only get by relentless practice—truly in the tradition of old arcade games. It is not a stretch to say that New Machina is one of the best games of the year on the PS4—and that really is saying something.

Prey:

Arkane Studios’ incredible reboot of the Prey IP delivers a haunting immersive-sim of the kin that we have not seen in over a decade. Prey is a game with an amazing atmosphere, incredible combat, and oodles of depth and emergence, so that no two players will ever have the same experience. It is Arkane’s masterpiece.

Resident Evil 7:

Capcom revived the Resident Evil franchise in a big way with Resident Evil 7, which, eschewing the third person viewpoint that the series has held, and indeed helped popularize, for years for a first person one, returned to the kind of thrills and horror that made the series os beloved to begin with. Resident Evil 7 delivered psychological horror and gory action in equal measure, and became one of the best games ever in a series that is known for having some of the greatest titles of all time.

Day of Infamy:

Before Call of Duty: WW2 brought World War 2 shooters back into the mainstream, New World Interacitve’s Day of Infamy had already delivered Day of Infamy, a fantastic multiplayer World War 2 shooter that challenges players by taking away their HUD, crosshairs, maps, and in many cases, even respawns—how you do and survive in Day of Infamy will come down to how well you play, and how well your team is coordinated. It’s really different, in a sea of increasingly homogenized shooters.

Get Even:

Get Even is a hugely flawed game- there is no setting around it. And yet, for all of that, there is also no getting around how good it manages to be regardless. Whether it is because of its tense horror or incredible atmosphere, or the highly frantic combat situations that it puts players in, Get Even is an unpolished gem that we really hope gets a follow up so it cane tap into its full potential.

DOOM (Switch):

DOOM gets nominated for this category for the second year straight, thanks to the Nintendo Switch port- which is a technical marvel. To get DOOM running on a 6.2 inch tablet is in and of itself a feat- but to have that compelling, fast paced action with labyrinthine level design that made us all fall in love with DOOM last year to begin with, and pair it with the instant pick up and play nature of the Switch, elevates the experience beyond whatever knocks the degraded graphics have.

And as for the WINNER:

Prey:

Think of Prey as the Breath of the Wild of shooters—it is emergent, dynamic, and reactive to the player and their actions. If you think it, chances are you can do it. This potent gameplay formula, mixed with a haunting atmosphere that is almost second to none, a stunning art style, and a minimalist story that will actively make you uncomfortable, makes Prey the standout shooter of 2017.

“Memories are the key not to the past, but the future.”

Get Even is a frustrating game. Not because of anything to do with the mechanics, presentation or concept, because those all range from serviceable to really very intriguing. Get Even is frustrating to me because it’s a good enough game with a really solid concept that sets off the best thriller I’ve seen in a game in a long time, and then proceeds to squander it all.

Without reservation, the strongest element of Get Even is the story. You are Cole Black, and the only thing you know at the outset is that you’re going to rescue a female hostage and are warned not to follow through. You have your cell phone with a handful of apps to help you navigate, view heat signatures, spot cleaned away blood and scan evidence, as well as a silent pistol and a unique rifle I’ll touch on more in a moment, giving you a taste of the kind of trained killer that Black might be. The rescue goes sideways, and following that you’re suddenly in a completely new environment and onto a new unknown factor.

"Even when outside of the confines of a memory, some fantastic musical backing, sound design and changing environmental details create very real feelings of unease and trepidation."

Ruining as few details as possible, the setup and structure of Get Even is most immediately evocative of PS1 classic, LSD: Dream Emulator. Black was not living those moments as you were playing them, rather they were being run back to him by the Pandora unit. This sci-fi Occulus like headset can viscerally bring people into memories – their own or others’, to be relived. Eventually you are pulled from reliving those pivotal moments to the reality of the Saw-esque, dilapidated psychiatric hospital run by the mysterious Red. The doctor is slow to reveal too much, except for two things. He created the Pandora Unit and Black is supposedly here of his own will, to discover the truth about the girl.

Perspective is the strength of the story, and often it’s not clear whether Black, or his recollection, can entirely be trusted. Memories can twist over themselves and start to glitch out if you don’t stick completely to script, or sections that the brain has glossed over become hugely abstract. Even when outside of the confines of a memory, some fantastic musical backing, sound design and changing environmental details create very real feelings of unease and trepidation. It never actually trips into Silent Hill territory or moves past thriller territory into horror country, but the audio has the kind of polish that gets into your head regardless.

I briefly mentioned the phone earlier, and one of its many functions is scanning disparate pieces of evidence that Black can uncover or naturally finds through exploring his environment. A short way into the game you gain access to an investigation room that both serves as the literal, tropey cork board web of evidence as well as a hub to revisit past stages to search for what you missed the first time. This is where I felt the plot of Get Even is let down a lot by its chosen linear structure.

"The story that they do tell is fine enough, and the twist towards the end is great, but it would be just as great of a movie with little adaption."

The story that they do tell is fine enough, and the twist towards the end is great, but it would be just as great of a movie with little adaption. Black is shuttled from memory to memory and Red helps clarify the major events of the memories as you go through them. However, given the amazing effort gone into the atmosphere, it’s not a huge stretch to see Get Even break away from the hand holding.

If Get Even had the bravery to let off the leash even to a degree, allow the players to use that investigation room to put those pieces together themselves and come to their own conclusions or create theories as they go, the game could easily have elevated itself to the cult status enjoyed by games like Zero Escape, The Witness or Dark Souls. The structure and narrative are there for it, and what is there shows me that this is a team that would really be able to pull it off.

While the plot and presentation surrounding it are by far the most exciting thing to talk about for Get Even, the rest really can be summarized as business as usual, unfortunately. Black has many cool uses for his phone that assist in solving puzzles, but they stop as basic puzzles like turning off all the heated valves to stop steam erupting from a pipe or tracking a wire back to the fuse box. The occasional shooting almost always happens as you would expect it to, with a focus on stealth thanks to the one unique idea in the combat, the corner gun.

"Between your map and the corner gun, you’re almost over aware of your environment."

The Corner gun allows you to pivot a firearm 90 degrees to either side, suggesting a stealth approach to every encounter. Between your map and the corner gun, you’re almost over aware of your environment. It’s less a matter of the usual peek-a-boo game that most shooters are playing these days, and more figuring out the puzzle in how to take out the enemy without alerting them to your presence. Failing just reverts to the box standard cover shooting so it’s not crippling to fail it, but it does sting to lose the one interesting gameplay tidbit in Get Even.

There is something to love about Get Even, and in fact it’s easy to see where it could have moved past just being good and launched into being great, which is a shame to see. The team clearly has talent and whether or not you feel like settling the score, Get Even shows a fantastic premise and realized concept that I would love to see expanded on in the future.

It’s been a long time coming, but Get Even, the psychological horror game by The Farm 51 and Bandai Namco, is now finally here. It’s an interesting title, if nothing else, eschewing an action game format to go for more psychological scares for the player.

If you want to play through the game, but are unsure of what you should be doing, or if you simply want to watch a playthrough before deciding whether or not the game is something that you feel like you should put up money for, the good news is, we have you covered- the full video walkthrough for Get Even is embedded below for you to watch. Of course, be mindful of the fact that the video does have spoilers, so don’t go skipping too far ahead of where you are and ruining the story for yourself.

Get Even is available now on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Uncover the truth on June 23rd.

The Farm 51’s Get Even is nearly upon us, bringing its brand of bizarre first person shooting and horror thrills to the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Check out the launch trailer below which is full of mannequins, paintings and corpses to know what we mean.

The oft-delayed Get Even centres on Cole Black, a man who awakens with only one memory – saving a girl from a bomb on her person. Of course, things aren’t what they seem as Cole learns more about himself and the identity of the girl.

Expect the unexpected, essentially. Along with this intriguing premise, Get Even also features the Cornergun, allowing players to, naturally, shoot around corners.

Get Even will release on June 23rd, though you can currently pick it up on Steam right now. What are your thoughts on the launch trailer? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more information on the game.

The Farm 51 expresses "our deepest condolences to everyone concerned."

The Farm 51’s psychological first person shooter Get Even was originally meant to release on May 25th. However, due to the recent attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England that saw 22 dead, the developer has decided to postpone the game’s release.

“Given recent events and out of respect we have decided to postpone the commercial release of Get Even. We would like to express our deepest condolences to everyone concerned.”

Get Even will now be releasing on June 23rd for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. It’s been in development for sometime and focuses on a psychological motivated plot with horror elements. Despite some hiccups from impressions last year at Gamescom, Get Even seems to be good to go – EDGE recently reviewed it in issue #307 and gave it a 6 out of 10.

As always in the case of such events, our hearts go out to the victims and their families.

The game will also last you a good while, from the sound of things.

The Farm 51’s upcoming intriguing psychological horror game Get Even has everyone’s attention, in part because of how unlike everything else on the market it seems to be. And it sounds like, unlike most horror games, Get Even may last you for a goo while. In an interview with WCCFTech, The Farm 51’s Director Wojciech Pazdur confirmed that the game has quite a bit of content.

While people who are focused on the action should be able to finish it in 9-10 hours, and those on the exploration 12-15 hours, finding everything in the game could take as much as 50 hours.

Pazdur also spoke about the game’s PS4 Pro enhancements, confirming that there won’t be much, mostly owing to The Farm 51 being a smaller developer lacking resources and the capacity to do something more elaborate.

“We are, unfortunately, a too small developer to be able to focus deeply on PS4 Pro so we used “safe enhancements”. The game supports 4K on Playstation 4 Pro while the effects in the game and the framerate stay similar on both consoles,” he said.

He also sounded off on the Switch, admitting to be intrigued by the market, and confirming that for future games by The Farm 51, a Switch version could be a possibility. “We were too busy with Get Even to research this market. Still, we are very intrigued by how this platform is doing. The decision about porting Get Even on specific platforms is in the publisher’s hands, but new games? We will keep our minds open.”

Get Even is due out some time this year on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage and information on the game.

After April delivered with games like Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 3, Outlast, Persona 5 and What Remains of Edith Finch, May will see yet another deluge of big names. From triple-A and indie shooters to fighting games and Jason Vorhees, May 2017 has plenty to look forward. Let’s check out the 10 games you should look forward to next month.

Prey

Arkane Studios didn’t exactly have a great 2016. Despite Dishonored 2 launching to great critical praise, much of it was over-shadowed by PC issues. It’s since reassured players that Prey won’t suffer the same problems. As a re-imagining of sorts for the classic franchise, Prey takes place on-board the Talos I space station with protagonist Morgan Yu. Morgan is trying to figure out why he’s there while also battling the mysterious Typhon. The game presents a System Shock 2-like vibe (which is understandable since it was inspired by the same) and promises a strong narrative. Dishonored players can expect the same open level design but with more guns, shape-shifting and weirdness. Prey releases on May 5th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Strafe

Fancy some old-school, 16-bit Quake-style shooting? Pixel Titans’ Strafe may be just what you need. Delayed to May for additional polish, Strafe mixes the bloody mayhem of Quake with a rogue-lite approach. Upgrades are to be had among four unique zones with randomly generated levels on each play-through There are more than 30 guns to be had and +20 enemies to slaughter and the game is incredibly generous about leaving the fruits of your slaughter all over the walls. Strafe will release on May 9th for PC and will head to PS4 later this year.

Injustice 2

Get ready to choose a side as NetherRealms’ Injustice 2 arrives on May 16th for Xbox One and PS4. Taking place directly after the first game with the despotic Superman’s regime in shambles, Injustice 2 features several new heroes and villains this time around. Gorilla Grodd, Atrocitus, Braniac, Captain Cold and Poison Ivy will tussle with the likes of Supergirl, Robin, Firestorm and Cheetah. There’s also a pretty complex gear system, allowing players to increase their overall base stats, learn new moves and even utilize powerful set bonuses. How this will be balanced in multiplayer remains to be seen but for the most part, there’s tons of possibility for customizing one’s fighting style.

The Surge

Deck13 Interactive already tried its hand at a Dark Souls-style action RPG with Lords of the Fallen. The Surge goes back to the same well but has a dystopian future as its setting. You play as an average worker with a mega-corporation that happens to be having a bad day. Robots go rogue, exo-suit wearing employees vie for your blood and things are generally just terrible. Fortunately, you also have an exo-suit and it can be upgraded by dismembering foes and taking their limbs. This helps encourage a somewhat different play-style from Dark Souls but we’ll see how it pans out when The Surge releases on May 16th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

A remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia will feature the contemporary battle system that’s defined titles like Fire Emblem Awakening. Otherwise, many of the strange (at the time) elements of Fire Emblem Gaiden are intact including an overworld and towns that can be navigated. The romance options are fairly limited (read: not included at all) but this is Fire Emblem. There will be plenty of tactical RPG goodness to embrace when it arrives on May 19th for the Nintendo 3DS.

Friday The 13th: The Game

Jason’s coming to town and he’s more than a little bloodthirsty. Based on the revered horror movie franchise, Friday the 13th: The Game will be an asymmetrical multiplayer title pitting seven Crystal Lake counselors against one Jason Vorhees. The goal of the counselors is to survive while Jason must eliminate them. Brutal execution moves can be used to dispose of the counselors but if escape isn’t an option, the latter can use a special “victory condition” of sorts to beat Jason. Friday the 13th: The Game has made waves for its unrelenting brutality and quite frankly, we can’t wait to see how its multiplayer handles when it’s out on May 26th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Get Even

Part psychological journey, part stylish shooter, Get Even comes from the minds at The Farm 51, who also developed Painkiller: Hell & Damnation. The game itself has you rescuing someone but not everything is so cut and dry. The limits of reality and perception are tested throughout. If you’re not in the mood for philosophy, Get Even’s gameplay revolves around bending bullets and decimating your foes. It’s out on May 26th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Rime

Long in development, controversial and pretty abstract in its own right, Tequila Works’ Rime will finally be out in May for Xbox One, PS4 and PC (the Nintendo Switch version arrives in Q3 2017). There’s not a whole lot we know about the game aside from it centering on a boy who must escape a curse and the island he’s inhabiting. That means lots of puzzle solving and exploring the open world among a wordless narrative. Interestingly, light have some role in the gameplay. We’ll find out how that works when Rime releases on May 26th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Farpoint

Virtual reality games may have somewhat cooled off since PlayStation VR launched last year but Farpoint still looks awfully compelling. As a first-person shooter, Farpoint has traversing an alien environment and battling swarms of ugly aliens. Perhaps the most significant factor that differentiates Farpoint from other VR shooters is your ability to move within the game. With sleek visuals and high octane action, Farpoint looks to deliver the goods when it launches on May 16th for PlayStation VR.

Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2

Though not quite a sequel to Revelator, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 is a pretty meaty update. Along with the customary balance changes, each of the previous 23 characters will be receiving new moves. Two new characters – Baiken from previous games and the brand new Answer – are also being added while Jam, Raven, Dizzy and Haehyun get new episode story scenes. There will also be a new After Story that takes place after the main story. Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 is out for PS3, PS4 and PC on May 26th in North America and Europe so if you haven’t had a chance to play the original, it’ll be worth picking up.

Mad hatting.

Bandai Namco’s upcoming surreal horror game Get Even just got a brand new trailer today, showcasing something completely odd- a tea party that the game’s protagonist Cole Black finds himself visiting. Well, calling it a tea party may be a bit of a stretch, since it seems rather that he is in the company of a fellow recalling the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. Who is incidentally drinking tea.

Of course, the trailer is cryptic, and we don’t get any more to go on than that. What does this mean? How does it contribute to Get Even‘s overall narrative? What is Get Even‘s overall narrative? All of these are questions that the trailer may raise, but it does not answer.

Developed by The Farm 51, Get Even launches on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC later this month, on May 26. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage on the game.

Sorting it out.

Bandai Namco’s upcoming Get Even, a highly unusually surrealist take on horror games by Polish developer The Farm 51, looks to be pretty damn interesting- and today’s new trailer for the game only serves to drive that point home.

The trailer is 52 seconds long, and touches upon the long held philosophical quandary- just what is real? People who loved movies like The Matrix or Inception, or people who are into psychedelic culture, or people who have followed the works of Descartes, will probably greatly appreciate the fact that a game is willing to explore this idea- of course, the hope is that it goes somewhere meaningful with it, too.

For now, you can watch this trailer for yourself below and decide whether or not you think they are on the right track. Get Even will launch on May 26, for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more information and coverage.
