GFA Games has released a hotfix to address connection stability, map loading times, and more, with a more extensive update forthcoming.

PIONER, a S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-like MMOFPS from GFA Games, entered early access on PC via Steam after an extensive open beta. Unfortunately, it’s off to a rough start, garnering a “Mixed” rating from 375 user reviews with only 48 percent giving it a thumbs-up.

Its launch numbers are also fairly weak, recently peaking at 1,140 concurrent players (which could increase over the days). While there have been issues, the developer issued the first hotfix fairly quickly, fixing long map loading times and facial animations on Low/Medium graphics settings. Players should also see improved server connectivity and connection stability as a whole.

It also promised a “major patch” with various fixes and improvements soon. PIONER will remain in early access for one year, “approximately,” according to GFA Games, with more content, mechanics, and polish to be added over time. There are currently five Story Acts and numerous regions to explore for over 100 hours of gameplay. As always, stay tuned for further updates and changes, especially with the Holidays rolling around.

The Early Access release of PIONER will be available in standard and Deluxe editions, the latter of which offers several in-game goodies.

Just a few weeks after having its open beta, developer GFA Games has announced that MMO shooter PIONER will be getting its Early Access release on PC (via Steam) on December 16. The announcement was made alongside the release of a brand new trailer which you can check out below.

PIONER will be available in the form of a standard edition and a Deluxe edition. The latter will include a host of in-game items along with the game: the Renegade armour and gear skin, a unique skin for all weapons under the AR classification, the exclusive in-game Founder title, 500 Efritanium Crystals, the Creepy Charm weapon accessory, and the Katana watch inspired by classic 1980s-era Japanese wrist watch designs.

The open beta for PIONER, which was kicked off earlier this month, included quite a bit of content. Among the kinds of content that players can partake in were five acts of the story campaign, as well as the manufacture raid and a training raid dubbed Crash Site. For those who prefer some PvP action, the open beta also featured Deathmatch and the Carnage tournament modes.

Players who might not be too familiar with the kind of gameplay offered by PIONER can check out a gameplay trailer that was released back in March. The trailer gave us a great look at the title’s slow-paced tactical shooter gameplay. Along with this, it also showcased the action and survival mechanics, with players needing to explore dilapidated buildings to get their hands on resources.

Some of the enemies shown off in the trailer included airborne jellyfish, a massive flying leviathan, as well as more human enemies that run the gamut from poorly-equipped bandits to well kitted-out mercenary crews that have access to heavy weaponry and better armour.

PIONER was first announced all the way back in 2021, and GFA Games has described it as trying to strike the perfect balance between offering action gameplay as well as tense horror moments. Underneath all the gameplay is also an RPG system with progression that rewards players with new active and passive abilities that can then be used to take on even more challenging missions.

Since it is an MMO, PIONER will have quite a bit of emphasis on multiplayer gameplay, with players being able to take on missions alongside a group of friends. These missions will also offer greater rewards. Along with this, the title will also feature designated PvP zones where all bets are off.

Among the core features of PIONER will be its crafting system, which has been described by GFA Games as being flexible and in-depth. Using the system, players can craft a variety of powerful weapons and other equipment by making use of artifacts, scavenged materials, and anomaly energy.

The core game modes in PIONER include the Shadowlands mode, which makes use of extraction shooter-styled mechanics, and will offer high-stakes survival and treasure hunting where players have to deal with environmental hazards as well as potentially-hostile players. To take on these multiplayer challenges, the title will also offer a variety of social tools, including a clan system that can be used to form larger communities that can communicate with each other in the game, as well as share resources.

Available until November 11th on PC, players can experience about 30 hours of gameplay, including end-game content and quests.

GFA Games has kicked off PIONER’s open beta on PC, confirming a week-long test window that runs through November 11. Players can jump in via Steam to explore Tartarus Island ahead of the full launch planned for late 2025.

The studio outlines a sizable slice of content for this test including a five-act story campaign (Acts 1–5), the “Manufacture” raid plus a “Crash Site” training raid, three global quests (including a world-boss event), PvP Deathmatch, and the Carnage tournament, an in-game tactical card mode with ranked play and rewards. It all amounts to about 30 hours of gameplay, though progress will be wiped once the beta ends.

On Steam, the team previously teased timing changes as it moved from an October target to a November 4 start, and has been directing players to the app page as the entry point for the current test build.

Bottom line: This is more than a network shake-out, PIONER is letting players trial a broad slice of its MMOFPS loop. If the raids land and the story clicks, GFA Games could exit beta with positive word-of-mouth already doing the heavy lifting.

A new trailer highlights combat and exploration in Mushroom Valley as players fight back against humanoid monstrosities.

The jury is still out on whether GFA Games’ Pioner will launch in 2025, but interested participants can go hands-on with a free demo. It’s available from June 9th to 16th as part of the Steam Next Fest, with a new trailer highlighting one of the supposed locations – Mushroom Valley. Check it out below.

Announced in 2021 and delayed a fair amount, Pioner unfolds on a post-apocalyptic island in an alternative reality. Offering a 50+ square kilometer map with dynamic PvE and PvP, players take on quests and explore the world, working with factions and ultimately attempting to survive.

Though the trailer showcases more methodical shooting with a crossbow, which doubles as a melee weapon, the tail end showcases an assault rifle for laying waste to enemies. Environments are stylishly detailed, but there’s notable pop-in, especially with foliage and shadows.

For those who can’t get enough of the demo, closed betas will be held later for smaller groups. Head here to sign up, and stay tuned for updates.

Along with its action and survival gameplay, the trailer also gives us a look at how inspired Pioner was from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.

During Future Games Show Spring Showcase 2025, developer GFA Games released a new gameplay trailer for its upcoming MMO shooter Pioner. The trailer, which you can check out below, gives a decent idea of what kind players can expect from the shooter when it comes out later this year.

As its trailer indicates, Pioner wears its inspirations on its sleeves. In this case, the inspiration is the GSC Game World’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. The trailer shows off Pioner‘s slow-paced tactical shooter gameplay, while also revealing that players will have to make of various tools to ensure that the environment is safe enough for them to travel through.

Speaking of the environment, Pioner taps into similar post-nuclear apocalyptic vibes as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. does, while also going more fantastical with the idea. Along with dilapidated buildings, the environments in Pioner are also filled with strange creatures, including airborne jellyfish, and even a massive flying leviathan.

Along with fighting strange flora and fauna, players will also have to take on more human enemies that seem to range from run-of-the-mill poorly-equipped bandits to well kitted out mercenary crews that have heavy weapons and armour. There will also be things like irradiated zombies and mutated animals for players to take on.

Pioner was originally announced all the way back in 2021. At the time, GFA Games was aiming for a 2021-2022 launch window. However, things seem to have obviously changed, with the game now being slated for launch on PC some time in 2025.

The game is set to offer a mix between action gameplay as well as tense horror moments. These aspects will be held together through an RPG system that rewards players with more active and passive abilities as they take on the challenges that the game will put before them.

Pioner isn’t a single-player game, however, and players will have to interact with others as they make their way through the game. The title will feature PvE missions that groups of players can take on together for greater rewards, as well as designated PvP zones where all bets are off.

Among the multiplayer game modes in Pioner is the Shadowlands mode which is based on extraction shooter mechanics. GFA Games promises high-stakes survival and treasure hunting in the Shadowlands mode, with players having to deal with not only environmental obstacles, but possibly even other potentially-hostile players as well.

Multiplayer is a big focus for Pioner, which also feature in-game tools that will allow players to organise and take on its many challenges. Among these tools will be a clan system that will allow players to not only communicate with each other, but also to share resources, compete on clan leaderboards, and create their own community dynamics.

Players will also be able to set up their own base camp, since they will need a place to partake in the game’s crafting system. Players will be able to make use of anomaly energy, scavenged materials and artifacts to make powerful weapons and equipment.

Check out our thoughts on why Pioner looks like the perfect hybrid between Fallout and S.T.A.L.K.E.R..

GFA Games' upcoming PIONER is an interesting mix of MMO elements combined with fast-paced action gameplay.

The games industry is experiencing an interesting shift at this point in time, with a litany of new studios being formed by veterans of the industry. This is due in large parts because of an abundance of venture capital money being pumped into the creation of new ventures in the games industry. What happens is that some of these firms essentially poach high-ranking veterans of the industry in order to form a new studio which leads to departures that prove detrimental to other franchises, but the silver lining to it is that fans get to experience more games and new studios can actually develop the game they want to make, instead of pumping more entries into the same franchise.

Furthermore, modern technology has allowed for a more streamlined development process, and those taking advantage of it are now able to craft experiences that rival the best of the best in a fraction of the AAA budget. We have had games like Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and even more coming in the near future such as Black Myth: Wukong, Faith of Danschant: Hereafter among others. However, one game that looks mighty interesting and might have slipped under the radar of many fans is PIONER.

PIONER is an open-world action MMORPG being developed by GFA Games. PIONER is also the studio’s first venture into AAA development, and while budgets for the game aren’t known as of now, it’s certainly looks ambitious. With PIONER, developer GFA Games wishes to combine a single-player campaign, an ever-changing open-world, as well as an MMORPG under one single roof. The game is currently in development for PC, and GFA Games is targeting a Q4 2021 or Q1 2022 release, although hitting store shelves in time for the former seems a highly unlikely prospect.

PIONER will see players taking control of a former operative, who somehow survives a technological disaster following which the open-world has been shredded to ruins and a shadow of its former glory. Of course, it doesn’t take a genius to guess where the inspirations lie, but like STALKER – there’s great attention to detail in the authenticity of its environments which is one of the most crucial parts for nailing the atmosphere of a post-apocalypse. The plot, however, revolves around finding your fallen comrades and investigating a mystical station, which should hold plenty of interesting secrets for players to unfold.

PIONER looks absolutely gorgeous, the environments and character models are highly detailed with a number of subtle details that all add to the realism that the game seems to be pushing for. The overall atmosphere is drab and macabre, which is achieved thanks in large parts to the abundant use of muted themes such as green, brown, and grey. The reflections and lighting are equally fantastic, although it isn’t confirmed whether the game would be using ray-traced reflections or not. The trailer doesn’t show any signs of the game using that technology, but of course, things could definitely change in the future.

While the story could be a promising aspect of the experience although details remain scant for now, PIONER’s biggest attraction is its gameplay. Post-apocalyptic shooters have a reputation of being slow and methodical, with a laid-back pace coupled with guns lacking in feedback and punch. PIONER, however, breaks free from these norms to provide more action and a fast-paced experience. The combat is extremely brutal, and guns feel like they have a satisfying punch to them. The game’s overall pace seems more akin to modern action shooters instead of STALKER, which is of course – a nice change of pace from what players are accustomed to from the genre.

A separate trailer focused entirely on the game’s combat system showcases a plethora of weapons that players can use in the game. These range from a seemingly standard-issue pistol to an assault rifle, alongside a few exotic weapons such as an energy rifle and a dual-pump shotgun that dare you to get up close and personal with your enemies. There’s also a decent amount of progression within the game’s weapons, and players can use a number of skills to upgrade their weapon stats such as fire accuracy, reload speed, and magazine size among others. Weapons can be found both while roaming around the world and through crafting using unique resources.

PIONER also has a bunch of enemy types that players will be fighting in their adventures, and defeating different types of them will require different tactics. For instance, regular ammo will be great against human enemies, and the rarer energy ammo type will be of great use in defeating enemies born from the anomaly which is the disaster that sets up the game’s events. In addition to providing a constant variety of enemies, associated strategies of defeating them will add a more tactical element to the gameplay – and players might need to think twice before engaging a group of hostiles.

PIONER is also a survival game, and of course – there’s going to be a lot of crafting and resource management. Players will be looking out for resources in the game’s world, with varying levels of rarity. Those resources will then be put to use in crafting and upgrading gear. Of course, what ultimately makes PIONER’s concept unique is the fact that the game combines these more survival elements with an MMO-Esque world. While on their travels, players will be meeting other fellow survivors on the island – who can and probably will pose a threat to your existence. There will also be public raids and encounters that wouldn’t be possible while solo, and players will have to stick together during these times in order to survive. During an interview with PCGamer, Aleksandr Nikitin from GFA Games described the game’s concept as, “Pioner is conceived as a unique game containing a single player campaign, an emotional cooperative game and a survival in the struggle between players against each other and the spawn of the island.” He also stated that, “There are goals in the world that you can achieve alone: but I don’t think that an ordinary person can fight back the most dangerous bosses in solo.”

Again, all of this sounds really promising – but it’s certainly a bit difficult to wrap one’s head around how the game could possibly incorporate so many elements without breaking apart. At this point, it’s really difficult to tell how this ambition will ultimately pan out – but one could certainly be hopeful. That being said, GFA Games has taken upon themselves an enormous task for a debut project and hopefully, PIONER manages to carve out a distinct identity for itself in the genre.

GFA Games' mishmash of genres, Pioner, has debuted at the PC Gaming Show, showcasing plenty of gameplay footage.

Fans of games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are definitely being treated to quite a bit. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl is coming out next year, but there are several games taking inspiration from it to look forward to as well. One of them, developed by Russian studio GFA Games, is Pioner, which debuted at the PC Gaming Show at E3 2021.

Featuring a mix of horror elements, first person combat, and role playing mechanics, Pioner is looking like an interesting mix of genres. Players will manage a home base and fight to protect it against all manner of beasts, while plenty of monstrosities will also be roaming the lands outside your home base as well. Meanwhile, with raids PvP mechanics, and co-op missions to engage with as well, there’s plenty of content to dive into as well (or so the developers are promising, at least). Check out its trailer below.

Pioner is in development for PC, and currently has a planned launch window of either late 2021 or early 2022. A more specific release date is yet to be announced, but stay tuned to GamingBolt for more details in the meantime.
