Ubisoft has announced the closure of two free to play titles – Ghost Recon Phantoms and The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot – in the coming months.

Ghost Recon Phantoms will be shut down on December 1st with Ubisoft Singapore thanking fans for their support. The developer noted that audience outreach simply wasn’t strong enough. “Unfortunately, GRP was not as successful as we had hoped for, so we had to make the decision to close the game. This decision wasn’t easy for us and we tried to find other ways. But in the end we decided to close the game and focus on other projects.”

As for The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, the reasons were fairly similar – the game wasn’t as popular as the publisher Ubisoft wanted. Subsequently, it will be shutting down in October. “Unfortunately, Mighty Quest for Epic Loot was not as successful as we had hoped for, so we had to make the decision to close the game. This decision wasn’t easy for us and we tried to find other ways. But in the end we decided to close the game and focus on other projects.”

Unfortunately, there don’t seem to be refunds for Ghost Recon Phantoms’ micro-transactions. What are your thoughts on both games’ closures? Let us know in the comments.

Whoever said “there is no such thing as a free lunch” obviously wasn’t a gamer, because he missed a ton of great games that were free of cost. Free to play games have become insanely popular over the past few years, and surprisingly, the bulk of the free to play revolution has come not from the casual iPhone toting masses, but from hardcore, competitive gamers. When you think “free games” you might be inclined to think that the quality of those games may not be great, but you would be wrong- some of the biggest games of the day are all free to play, and everything about them merits a recommendation.

Star Conflict

Those of you who loved the epic space battles in Star Wars ? Star Conflict is your game Star Conflict has players build a starship, equip it with parts that enhance its abilities, and then send it into battle against other spaceships. The dogfights are pretty impressive and it is quite easy on the eyes in terms of graphics.

Fancy demolishing a museum with your friends as target practice just because it’d be cool? Ubisoft has you covered with a bran new map, titled The Gallery, for its online shooter Ghost Recon Phantoms. This coincides with a new map voted feature which lets players decide which maps they want to play on.

Simon Davis, Lead Designer on Ghost Recon Phantoms, talked about The Gallery and said, “This new map is set in a circular museum inspired by the Guggenheim in New York. The difference is a double-helix staircase, similar to the Bramante Staircase in the Vatican Museum.

“To boost the level of challenge in The Gallery, there is only one point to capture, located at the top of the map, so both teams have to make their way to the top using one of the two paths. The Gallery was designed to have very little room to hide, making the map both tactical and fast-paced.”
