Do you love games that let you go wherever the road takes you, and have a whale of a time in the process? These titles do a lot for that kind of a gameplay loop, and remain among our favorites!

We know that for some of you, kicking back and diving into a single-player experience that has you invested in its world is a great use of your gaming time. And for many of those worlds, it’s how exploration and traversal pans out that makes or breaks the experience.

Thankfully, there’s no dearth of options when it comes to games that just let you loose into their long winding roads that have a lot going on as you travel along vast worlds. We’ve put together titles we think fit that description and are certainly worth getting lost in. Some of your most memorable gaming moments could be waiting just around a corner in their worlds!

Let’s dive in.

1. Days Gone

A vast expanse of map waits for you and your trusty motorbike in this one. It’s a pity that its beautiful landscapes are marred by the presence of vicious zombies and humans desperate enough to forget their moral codes. But a large part of the game involves cruising along the map on your motorcycle, ensuring you have a safe way back to it if your next dangerous plan doesn’t pan out the way you wanted it to.

Play things right and you’re back on the road, albeit having to make a quicker exit than your entrance. But you never know what else you might discover as you blaze a path to safety in such situations. It’s a world that does a good job of keeping its players invested in Deacon’s melancholy tale.

2. Pacific Drive

From its riveting opening to a rather bittersweet ending, this is a journey that’s underlined by a literal bond between your Driver and the station wagon you commandeer at the start of your adventure. It’s a story beat that works well for the narrative while also giving you a reason to travel far and wide in your car.

The game’s premise provides the scope for a journey like no other along roads that want you to discover everything they have to offer. We’re not going to forget some very memorable anomalies during our time in the Olympic Exclusion Zone in a hurry. Especially the ones that messed with our car.

3. Death Stranding 1 & 2

Whether on foot or in a vehicle, Death Stranding’s trek through a very memorable adventure with Sam Porter is all about traversing a beautiful yet hostile world. Guiding Sam to his next delivery destination is all about the different things you can discover, or be forced to work around, that you can find along the way.

It’s a journey like no other, and it’s a road that’s as unpredictable as the many threats you’re likely to find before you make it to safety again. There’s always a sense of anticipation as you travel across America, Mexico, and Australia, and a sense of awe when you discover the next thing they have been hiding. The original Death Stranding and its sequel continue to evoke fond memories.

4. The Crew 2

There’s a case to be made for The Crew 2’s scaled-down take on America that really brings moments where it’s just you and your car to life as you make your way between its various activities. Although it’s meant to be played with your buddies, its persistent open world design means that it’s quite easy to just get to exploring, driving around in your favorite ride, and having some racing fun along the way.

Of course, getting to pilot aircraft and operate boats were welcome additions, but our first sight of the Grand Canyon in this massive world was definitely among the highlights of driving around in it.

5. Jalopy

Splat and Lutfi’s journey in this one was nothing short of a masterpiece as far as memorable road trips go. The Jalopy in question is almost a character on its own, requiring a fairly realistic amount of upkeep to keep players ticking along in the narrative as they discover more about what was waiting for them at the end of it.

The option to keep the adventure going after its rather sad ending just adds more intrigue to an already satisfying journey. This is one that’s all about the journey, although there’s a case to be made for that destination being a very memorable moment.

6. Final Fantasy XV

In another adventure that has its protagonist accompanied by memorable companions, Noctis Lucis, the Regalia, and the chocobos, sure make travel and discovery a very memorable part of Final Fantasy XV. It helps that your posse is right by your side for the most part, their banter and conversations making the adventure come alive as you travel across Eos.

It helps that you can customize the Regalia and chocobos, giving your adventure that personal touch that makes such experiences special. Whether you’re chugging along on the road or soaring across the skies to your next destination, this is a game that makes the journey there a very enjoyable facet of the experience.

7. Read Dead Redemption 2

Arthur’s journey is one that absolutely exemplifies the feeling of being on the road, with endless possibilities and a world where life goes on, even if you’re not a part of it, being baked into the adventure. This is a world that’s alive, and almost thrumming with activities, secrets, discoveries, and content that’s sure to make your time with this one unforgettable.

There’s nothing that beats a conversation by chance that turns into a full-blown series of side quests, or the many quirky characters the road leads you to, in this one. There’s also the fact that you need to care for your horse as you would in the real world, and a host of activities that make your time on the road feel quite authentic and immersive. As far as open worlds that put you on a long and winding road go, this one continues to be a classic.

8. Mad Max

Max Rockatansky’s determination to build the Magnum Opus and the fact that this vehicle is a very crucial part of the adventure are reasons enough to qualify this one for our list. But it’s in the way that the Magnum Opus weaves itself so naturally into the gameplay loop and combat, in particular, and makes itself a star of the show.

It’s narratively valid, and the fact that customizing its parts can force you to make trade-offs in other aspects makes for a layer of immersion and engagement that solidifies the bond between man and machine in this one. The open world is a stage just waiting for you to discover moments where you and your vehicle are given an opportunity to shine.

9. State Of Decay 2

This one’s a constant challenge due to the world around you, a tale that builds a community around the struggle, and one in which the world can get quite unpredictable from moment to moment. From the need to nurture your community and take down the area’s Awakened Heart, every zombie-infested site is a chance to take your story down a path that’s different from the one you began with.

A lot of it comes down to your fellow settlers, and weaving everyone’s journey together into a gameplay loop that’s quite addictive makes each bit of territory you free from the zombies an achievement, and a very satisfying one at that.

10. Snowrunner

This is a title where the simulation of off-roading on rough terrain is accompanied by very flavorful discoveries that spell out the stories of the regions you explore while you witness your own role in fixing them up firsthand. It’s a great way to have you braving its landscapes, taking care of your fleet of vehicles while getting invested in a progression loop that becomes quite interesting the more you make your way through a region.

It connects you to the land you’re exploring while your vehicles carry you through it all, making this a journey that just draws you into the world it presents you with. You’re the focal point of an interesting bridge between the past and the present, and it’s up to you to build it up, one success after another.

11. Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 serves up surreal beats as you roam a world filled with calamity. But it’s the people you meet and the friends you make along the way that make this a worthwhile journey.

The ability to recruit locals who resist the local militia and their rigid control over the land is a great addition to this open-world, and adds a flavor to the entire journey that’s just too great to ignore. It helps that you forge relationships to discover more of the story and side content as you go, along with helping the local resistance, you know, resist the militia’s growing influence. You’re a cornerstone of that struggle, and the journey felt personal and, as a result, memorable.

12. The Long Drive

The road goes on and on in this innovative concept that’s literally all about being on the road and letting the journey continue. With a focus on freedom, immersion, and exploring the vast desert, this one gives its players a lot of freedom to just enjoy the journey.

You’re given a lot of reasons to just hop into your car and drive along, never knowing where the road takes you in this randomly generated desert. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in a game where the adventure takes you down unpredictable paths, look no further.

13. Forza Horizon 5

Mexico proved to be a great location for this instalment to the Horizon series, and driving along to stunning vistas was both entertaining and visually memorable. Getting to drive fancy, fast cars on roads that wound between different elevations, climate patterns, and, of course, new discoveries was a treat.

There’s an active volcano, ancient structures, cities, towns, jungles, and beaches to find and explore, making this title find reasons to put you at the wheel and send you along on your journey.

14. STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl

Survival in The Zone and navigating the complex relationships that govern it while also ensuring that you get enough food and sleep, is quite an immersive loop in GSC Games Studio’s much-awaited return to its popular franchise.

Recruiting people to aid in your journey, while the many discoveries and anomalies that await you in The Zone give this entire world a sense of mystery, and venturing into the unknown can be quite hard to top. With the PlayStation version on its way, now might be a great time to dive into a game whose journey to its current build is as interesting as the one it presents to you.

15. Ghost Recon Wildlands

Operation Kingslayer was a brilliant stage for the adventure that awaits you in this very immersive open world. With so much variety in the terrain along with a lot of freedom with how you approach any mission you find out in cartel-controlled Bolivia, this is a world where every inch of land you capture could be one worth the memories, and even lets you disable your AI companions if you believe in taking single-player literally.

However, there is a case to be made for bringing up to three buddies along for the ride. That immediately makes this one a worthy addition, although the AI companions are always there if you’re going for a suitable middle ground. Either way, dismantling a cartel has never felt so immersive, and entertaining too.

That’s a wrap on our favorite titles that put us on the road and just let us build our best memories of them along the way. Here’s to many more such experiences on the horizon.

These open world games might scratch your Grand Theft Auto itch until GTA 6 comes out.

In the wake of its announcement trailer, Grand Theft Auto 6 is, at long last, finally something tangible, an actual game that we can almost reach out and touch, rather the idea of one that we keep restlessly waiting for the official announcement of. It is, however, still a ways off, which means there’s plenty of antsy waiting in all of our futures. While we wait for GTA 6 then, it’s only natural that we’re going to start looking elsewhere for something that is similar enough to at least come close to scratching that itch. Here, we’re going to take a look at a few such games.

WATCH DOGS 2

The Watch Dogs franchise obviously has its own unique DNA with its pseudo-cyberpunk trappings and its hacking-centric gameplay mechanics, but there’s still a lot of GTA in Ubisoft’s franchise, and no game captures that better than Watch Dogs 2. If what you’re looking for is a large open world sandbox where you can have all kinds of chaotic (and criminal) fun with solidly implemented mechanics, in addition to a healthy dose of GTA-esque missions and side activities, Watch Dogs 2 offers that in spades.

SAINTS ROW 4

By the time the Saints Row franchise got to its fourth instalment, it had moved quite far away from how similar it used to be to the Grand Theft Auto games in its earlier days, and though that’s a stick that’s often used to beat Saints Row 4 with, on its own merits, as an open world crime action game, there’s a lot to love about it. From the bombastic, over-the-top mechanics that the game arms you with to wreak havoc with in the world to just how fun it is to simply explore the sandbox and mess about with its systems, Saints Row 4 offers a solid dose of open world action.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2

Let’s get to some of the painfully obvious picks now, because even though they’re obvious they’re well worth mentioning. Rockstar’s very own Red Dead Redemption 2 is, in fact, by far the best game on this list. Owing to its period setting, its more somber tone, and the added focus on character-driven storytelling, Red Dead 2 is obviously quite different from GTA in some key ways- but it’s a Rockstar open world. The sheer size of the map, the astounding variety and attention to detail it exhibits in spite of how large it is, the spectacularly designed content it’s brimming with, the complex web of systems that make the sandbox an infinitely enjoyable one- all of the hallmark Rockstar qualities you’d want in an open world game, Red Dead Redemption 2 delivers in extreme abundance.

GRAND THEFT AUTO 4

You don’t need us to tell you that you should be playing GTA 5 to scratch your GTA itch. More than a decade on from its launch, people can’t stop buying and playing it. That does mean, however, that some of its predecessors don’t get the retrospective attention that they deserve. Grand Theft Auto 4, for instance, has aged remarkably well. Not only does it have one of the strongest stories in the entire series, its open world is also one of the best-designed and most intricately detailed ones even today, so long after the game first came out. Do yourselves a favour and hop back into GTA 4, because it’s an absolute classic.

YAKUZA 5

Yakuza and Grand Theft Auto games might not be as similar as many often perceive them as, but particularly where Yakuza 5 is concerned, there’s a lot of GTA DNA in it. It is, for starters, one of the series’ larger games where pure real estate is concerned, while similar to GTA, it also offers a smattering of excellently designed side content that you can pour countless hours into. On top of that, you obviously have plenty of opportunities to commit outrageous crimes throughout the game’s world, and there are also multiple protagonists to play as, similar to GTA 5 (though that’s the case in several other Yakuza games as well, to be fair).

MAFIA: DEFINITIVE EDITION

2K’s Mafia franchise doesn’t put as much stock into the open world sandbox aspect of its experience as something like GTA does, instead putting the vast majority of its focus on storytelling. But even so, if you want to run and drive around an intricately crafted real-world (or real-world adjacent) city as a hardened criminal, Mafia: Definitive Edition is a game that’s likely to appeal to you. On top of that, it adds extra flavour of its own with an incredibly authentic and atmospheric period setting, allowing it to stand out in what’s clearly quite a crowded category.

FAR CRY 6

The Far Cry and GTA franchises have often had very similar sensibilities, in spite of how outwardly different they tend to be, and that’s abundantly evident in Far Cry 6 as well. Yes, having an open world that’s mostly wilderness and rural areas does give it a different flavour from Rockstar’s franchise (though Far Cry 6 does have way more urban environments than any of its predecessors), but from the systemic nature of its open world mechanics to the driving to so much more, Far Cry 6 does owe a lot of itself to GTA.

GHOST RECON WILDLANDS

You might stand on the opposite sides of law in Ghost Recon Wildlands and Grand Theft Auto, but the former still borrows liberally from the latter in several respects. On top of offering a massive, systemic open world featuring third person shooter combat, Ghost Recon Wildlands is also a great game for someone who simply wants to get behind the wheel in a vehicle and cruise around the open world. And of course, it becomes doubly enjoyable if you’re doing all of that stuff in co-op.

JUST CAUSE 4

The Just Cause franchise has always been famous for its unique brand of open world chaos, and there’s plenty of that to go around in Just Cause 4 as well. Though the game is not without its issues in some key departments (like its storytelling and many of its bland missions), the actual sandbox itself is an absolute blast to exist in. From the explosive combat to the riotously fun wingsuit and grappling hook loop to the addition of extreme weather, Just Cause 4’s open world is brimming with opportunities to have fun of your own making.

CYBERPUNK 2077

Until quite recently, Cyberpunk 2077’s attempts to inject its open world with elements similar to the Grand Theft Auto games were unsuccessful ones, to say the least, but in the wake of Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty, that’s certainly no longer the case. The open world is alive and buzzing, and the game does an excellent job of immersing you in its dense metropolis. From driving around in your vehicles to engaging in a variety of side activities to committing crimes to your heart’s content and wrangling with the cops, Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty are the closest we’ve ever come to a futuristic take on GTA.

From fantastic takes to authentic recreations to everything in between, these real-world inspired open world settings stand out in memory.

As good as it feels to play a game that can thoroughly transport you to a unique, creative, fictional world with its very own set of rules, just as often, it can be equally entertaining to dive into games where the places you’re visiting are actual, real-world locations. From fantastical takes on real locations to games that attempt to more authentically recreate them to everything in between, these games can come in many different flavours, and here, we’re going to talk about some that stand out.

Before we proceed, keep in mind that we’re limiting this list only to games that are set in actual, real places, which games that are set in fictional places that are based on real locations won’t be included- so you won’t see games like Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption in here. With that out of the way, let’s get started.

SLEEPING DOGS

One of the most criminally underrated open world crime games we’ve ever played, Sleeping Dogs is something of a shoo-in for such a list. Its open world Hong Kong setting was one of its biggest highlights, thanks not only to how detailed and authentic it was, or how vibrant, alive, and dense it felt, but also how perfectly it served as a setting to the game’s bombastic combat and action.

The past few years have seen some excellent open-world titles on top of the existing classics. Here are some of the very best that you should play.

An open-world game is perhaps one of the toughest to develop. Studios need to account for the world’s design and its activities and incorporate features like weather, wildlife, vegetation and the player’s relation to it all. Throw in expansive campaigns and gameplay systems like crafting, spaceship design, loot, boss battles and more, and they can quickly turn into a nightmare. Nevertheless, there are several open-world games that not only succeed but stand out as some of the finest titles in gaming. Let’s look at the top 30 best open-world games of all time that are worth playing.

30. Just Cause 2

Although almost all games in the Just Cause series are fine sandbox experiences, the second game is perhaps the best the franchise has to offer. Featuring over the top bombastic action set pieces along with stellar mission design, Just Cause 2 features a vast playground to do some of the craziest things possible in video games. Although the combat is disappointing, it’s the open world and the crazy amount of destruction one can do in it is the star of the show here.

Ubisoft Paris's open-world shooter was a mess when it launched in 2019, but has seen multiple updates. Is it finally worth picking up?

You really can’t talk about Ghost Recon Breakpoint without first discussing Ghost Recon Wildlands. Developed by Ubisoft Paris (with help from several other Ubisoft studios) and released in 2017, it and Assassin’s Creed Origins were some of the first open-world titles that began to showcase much larger spaces than Ubisoft’s earlier titles.

Wildlands went much further with stuffing its world with bloat and repetitive objectives, and while the story wasn’t anything special, it provided a decent enough set-up for players to hunt down cartel members.

Despite all of the issues, the presence of an AI squad, four-player co-op support, realistic weaponry and an assortment of content helped make it successful at launch. Ubisoft saw this and supported the game for years, adding new features like Ghost Mode and Tier 1, the option to play solo without teammates (remember this one), and paid DLC.

When it announced Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the publisher seemed to be set for success. It simply had to deliver the same compelling gameplay but with new objectives, tactical options, and a new map. Ubisoft Paris revealed a heavier emphasis on survival mechanics, like injuries and stamina management, but the biggest change was it being a solo experience. No AI teammates. The idea was to reinforce a feeling of isolation against overwhelming odds in the new setting of Auroa.

Fan backlash meant the developer had to promise AI teammates post-launch. Even then, the addition of loot elements also caused concern, especially with Ubisoft tossing this into more and more of its franchises over the years without any regard for whether they fit.

Cut to October 2019, and Ghost Recon Breakpoint was released to a disastrous response. Rife with bugs and performance issues, it was a terrible experience from top to bottom for fans and newcomers alike. Instead of an open-world tactical stealth shooter that fans had come to enjoy (even though Wildlands is a distinct step down from previous Ghost Recons), they were given some faux-looter shooter with a social hub.

The gameplay was dumbed down; the survival elements meant almost nothing; the story was horrendous; the enemy AI was a joke when it wasn’t downright atrocious; Auroa as a location felt barren and boring – the list went on. That’s before getting to the microtransactions or, once again, how utterly insignificant the addition of loot and Gear Level was to the overall experience.

But don’t take our word for it. Ubisoft stocks plummeted following its release, and CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that sales for the title were disappointing. Shortly after its release, Ubisoft Paris acknowledged feedback and fan disappointment before announcing plans to revamp the game into something more akin to its predecessor.

Live support for Ghost Recon Breakpoint ended in April 2022. While Ubisoft added NFTs to the title with its ineptly handled Ubisoft Quartz, the development team is working on an unannounced project. Rumors circulated about a new single-player-focused Ghost Recon being in development. However, after Ubisoft Bucharest’s Ghost Recon Frontline was cancelled, there’s been no word on this.

So whether you pointed and laughed at the game’s release in 2019 or spotted the game recently on Steam, the question is: Is Ghost Recon Breakpoint fixed? More importantly, is it even worth playing? The answer to both these questions is actually yes. While it won’t capture the feel of Wildlands’ setting, Ubisoft Paris released several free updates over the years, improving and revamping the experience in several ways.

It first introduced some changes to the Gunsmith, which allowed players to choose different firing modes for their weapons, like single fire, full auto, additional burst, and automatic fire, depending on the weapon type. It also added new scopes, muzzle flashes and attachments like GL M203 Grenade Launcher and Extended Magazines, increasing the amount of customization.

In 2020, the developer followed up on its promise and brought back AI teammates. They could be enabled or disabled (for those who still preferred a solo experience) and issued commands. Due to their patchwork nature, they’re never referred to in the story and don’t provide much by way of banter. But hey, they’re there, and the game is a far better experience than without them.

By now, the game had also seen two Live Events, and while the first is notable for, well, adding Terminators (don’t ask), the second, Resistance, is more significant. It added new mission types like hostage rescue, convoy ambush and so on, as players strengthened the presence of rebels on Auroa through new faction missions.

Over time, the Gunsmith would see further modifications like new Custom Stocks, Shared Stocks, Under-Barrel Grenade Launchers, Barrels, etc. The first and only raid, Project Titan, received some interesting new features. Players could explore its location, Golem Island, to discover settlements and complete missions. Best of all, players could discover raid gear during all this. Those who enjoyed co-op had a new Threat: Critical difficulty with a tougher boss, higher enemy health and weekly modifiers, but with four unique weapons available to earn.

All this would pale next to the biggest and most significant update – the Ghost Experience. It added new gameplay features like cooking grenades, cleaning weapons, picking up mines and C4 placed by Ghosts, deciding whether syringes could heal injuries (or not, thus increasing how punishing they were), and much more. Darkest Night created some of the darkest settings in the series and made NVG so much more important. Players also dealt more damage from stealth, making it much more important, while enemy AI was shored up and improved to feel more realistic.

The sheer range of options and quality-of-life features is also worth noting. You could finally turn off Gear Level, turning this into a much closer experience to Wildlands, and adjust whether previous event elements, like rebels and Terminators, appeared in the world.

Don’t want to deal with drones outside of story missions or when destroying Behemoths? Turn them off, which is also possible with helicopter patrols and Azraels. Suffice it to say that the Ghost Experience is really where the tide started to turn for Breakpoint, though constant updates to address crashes and other bugs shouldn’t be glossed over.

Ubisoft Paris would continue releasing new rewards and a new collaboration event in 2021, this time with Rainbow Six Siege, which introduced three Operators that could act as AI teammates. You had new mission types, like investigating zones with toxic gas and breaching buildings to assail enemies.

However, the next major update arrived a few months later with Teammate Progression, allowing you to unlock new upgrades for each AI teammate, from unique abilities to passives. Completing challenges garnered additional cosmetics while also garnering XP for teammates, and character textures were overhauled to look more appealing.

Of course, many will notice that Auroa, and the story, as a whole, was still the same boring mess that players didn’t enjoy at launch. Operation Motherland addressed this and provided a massive new mode called Conquest that was more in line with Wildlands’ campaign. Instead of following the original game’s story, you now traverse each region and freed them from the Bodarks (who first debuted in the Red Patriot DLC). Even Karen Bowman returned to lend her aid.

Over 60 new missions were added, which players could complete in any order they wished to free each region. It also added Optical Camo for turning invisible for brief periods, with unlockable chests to improve efficiency; a new level cap of 99; weapon mastery; unique weather scenarios daily; and new cosmetic rewards. It’s not quite A Realm Reborn, but it provided an alternative campaign for players to enjoy without being railroaded into any one path.

While Ghost Recon Wildlands is still recommended due to the sheer strength of the overall package, Ghost Recon Breakpoint is no longer the cursed follow-up it was at launch. It still suffers from plenty of bugs and glitches, Auroa still isn’t all that interesting of a location, and it’s always online (Wildlands has an offline option), so you’re at the mercy of servers. Nevertheless, if you ever see it on sale and enjoy Wildlands, it may be worth checking out, even if it did take several years to get to this point. Here’s hoping the next Ghost Recon is a more solid experience out of the gate.

Other games being added to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium are Metro Exodus, Trials of Mana, and more.

Sony has unveiled the lineup of games that it’s adding to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for the month of August, which will be accessible to the service’s Extra and Premium tier subscribers. As was confirmed not too long ago, August 16 will see the addition of Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2, with more games in the series set to arrive later this year.

In addition to that, as was leaked earlier this week, Ubisoft’s open world tactical shooter Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands also joins the service’s catalog on the same day. Subscribers can also expect multiplayer horror title Dead by Daylight, adventure title Bugsnax, and post-apocalyptic first person shooter Metro Exodus. Trials of Mana, UNO, Monopoly Madness, and Monopoly Plus are also included in the lineup.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Sony is adding any legacy titles to the PlayStation Plus Premium tier library this month. As for the Essential tier, it added a solid lineup of games earlier this month as well.
The open-world tactical shooter is reportedly part of the Ubisoft+ catalogue for the month, according to leaker billbill-kun on Dealabs.

Ghost Recon Wildlands is a part of the Game Pass line-up for August for Xbox, cloud and PC subscribers. However, it seems that PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers will get their hands on it soon. According to billbil-kun on Dealabs, who reliably leaks the PlayStation Plus Essential titles each month, the open-world tactical shooter will be part of the Ubisoft+ catalogue for August.

Sony has yet to announce the titles coming to Extra and Premium subscribers this month so stay tuned for more details. However, it seems unlikely that Ubisoft will release a patch for 60 frames per second support on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 as it did with Assassin’s Creed Origins.

As for the future of Ghost Recon, a new game is reportedly in development at Ubisoft Paris. Codenamed “OVER,” it’s apparently targeting a fiscal year 2023 release, so some time by March 31st, 2023. No gameplay details are known, save for it being a mainline title, but there may be an announcement at Ubisoft Forward in September. The publisher also recently announced the cancellation of Ghost Recon Frontline, a battle royale first-person shooter seemingly due to widespread backlash.

Which games best capture the feeling of patience and precision with a sniper rifle? Let's take a look at 15 more such titles.

The first-person shooter genre is fairly old but it’s incredible how popular sniping games have been. While there’s an appeal to running around and mowing down enemies, hanging back and picking off your targets from a distance with terrifying precision can also be fun. Let’s take a look at 15 such demanding sniper titles and what makes them so much fun.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

The guerrilla warfare aspect and lack of a radar in Metal Gear Solid 3 turned sniping into a fairly important mechanic. Rifles could be used to scout ahead and pick off foes from a safe distance, after all though you still had to be careful about leaving bodies. The true test came when facing The End – if you actually tried fighting him, then tracing his position and not getting caught out was key, especially with how incredible his aim could be. This also opened up a number of strategies like capturing and releasing his parrot while using the directional microphone to find his position.
