Easing the player in may work for some games but these 13 titles prefer the sink-or-swim approach with their opening levels.

The first impression is oftentimes the most important. While a game may sometimes have only one chance to wow you with its premise and presentation, many will at least give the first level a shot. But not every game is interested in gently guiding the player along – some will use their opening levels to crush your spirit immediately. Let’s take a look at 13 such opening levels in video games and what made them so rough.

The Village of Cursed Blossoms – Nioh 2

The first main story mission seems innocent enough with a few Gaki to eliminate but eventually, a massive boss-like Gozuki appears. You could deal with it or run away…the latter is pretty much needed since it slaughters you almost instantly. Things only get slightly easier from there as you venture to the Yokai realm with all of its hazards, face off against various other Yokai and humans, and finally battle a Mezuki (which is far from a pushover).

Forget just having difficult bosses - the regular enemies in these titles will give you a hard time, to say nothing of their mechanics.

For as fun and as powerful as some hack and slash games can make us feel, plenty are designed to punish you. Either through stricter mechanical requirements, tougher enemies and boss fights, or higher difficulties, these 15 titles have no qualms piling on the challenge. Let’s take a look at them here.

Nioh 2

The original was tough enough but Nioh 2 dials things up considerably. On top of new mechanics like Burst Counter, which must be timed properly to prevent massive damage from certain attacks and stagger enemies, several new enemy types and bosses will just straight up ruin your day. And this is before venturing into New Game Plus which increases enemy health and damage, adds new moves (and even removes Burst properties from some, meaning they can’t be countered), and even Cursed Enemies with status attacks.

No Elden Ring this year? No problem because these titles still offer some of the toughest bosses in video games. Check out all 14 here.

The year is only halfway done but there have already been a number of brutal boss fights that make you question your sanity. Some are rougher than others but all of them deserve a mention. So let’s take a look at the toughest boss fights of 2021. Spoilers follow so be warned.

Heisenberg (Village of Shadows) – Resident Evil Village

For most players, Village of Shadows difficulty can be somewhat comfortable. Unless you own the Trauma Pack DLC, you’ll likely be going through this on your second playthrough and thus have some nice upgraded weapons to take along. But none of your upgrades, weapons and so on will matter when tackling Heisenberg in the tank section due to the obscene damage he deals. It also doesn’t help that your movement is so limited inside of the tank, making it that much more difficult to survive his attacks and targeting his weak points.

Arthur gets taken down to his undies in this first look.

As is often the case with The Game Awards, we got some pleasant surprise announcements this year. One of those, at least for me, was Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection, a reboot of Capcom’s classic platformer title. We did get a nifty reveal trailer that gave us an idea of what to expect, but now we’ve gotten a gameplay demo for a closer look.

On the latest edition of Capcom TV, the crew demoed the new game. The game has a very different aesthetic than previous titles, going for a more storybook look with almost puppet-like movements. The gameplay should look familiar though as Arthur goes through the level taking out zombies, hostile birds and some evil plants. The titles were always noted for their difficulty, and it’s hard to parse if this will be the case here, but there’s definitely a few close calls as its played and Arthur is taken down to his underwear in iconic fashion.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection will launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch on February 25th, 2021.
