Recent reports have heavily suggested that a GoldenEye remaster is in the work, and this trademark renewal is here to pour more oil on that fire.

Trademark filings and renewals are hardly every concrete signs of the things to come, but when you’re talking about games that have already been in the rumour mill for sometime, those filings can seem more significant. We might have another one of those here.

Recently, the trademark for GoldenEye was extended, to use the name for “downloadable game software”. Why is that significant for a game that released for than two and a half decades ago? Well, earlier this year, Xbox Achievement listings for GoldenEye 007 were spotted online, giving way to multiple leaks and rumours claiming that a remastered version of the game is in development.

When it will be announced, if it is indeed real, remains to be seen. Leaks have claimed that GoldenEye 007’s remaster should be announced in the near future– but it hasn’t happened until now, so for now, all we can do is wait and watch.

Some of the greatest fan-made recreations over the years.

Video games can spark a burst of creativity in people every now and then, and often, people choose to channel that creativity into paying homage to those games themselves. Fan remakes are an often overlooked section of the industry, and in this feature, we’ll be talking about 15 of the most impressive fan remakes we’ve ever seen- whether that’s full-on remakes, or smaller recreations of certain segments and sections of games.

So without further ado, let’s get started.

BLACK MESA

Perhaps the most well-known (and also probably one of the very best) fan remakes to have ever been released. Black Mesa, which only recently launched after years of development, is a full-on remake of Half-Life 1– and without the shadow of a doubt, it is the best way to experience that all-time classic. That it not only understands and perfectly encapsulates everything that made Valve’s shooter so good, but also actually makes it better in many ways is a testament to its impeccable quality.

The recently announced GoldenEye 007: Reloaded, the HD re-release of GoldenEye 007, which was released only last year, was planned all along. “This was working in the background the whole time while they were working on the Wii game, but it was very important not to disturb that team as they completed the game,” Producer James Steer told Kotaku.

He said the developers only wanted to concentrate on a Wii remake first to pay tribute to the original game.

Since the game is well recognized for having great multiplayer, Eurocom is making many additions to the HD re-releases. More maps, 16-player support, more characters and new, stealth oriented modes.

The just re-made classic Goldeneye game has been released for the Nintendo Wii and the music has also been revamped. Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger does vocals for some of the music in the game. She sings a song originally done by Tina Turner and really does a fabulous job of it. You will notice a new intro to the game compared to the original Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64. You can listen or download the song right here and she sounds just like Tina Turner. Here are the lyrics to the songs she covers:

See reflections on the water
More than darkness in the depths
See him surface and never a shadow
On the wind I feel his breath

Golden eye, I found his weakness
Golden eye, he’ll do what I please
Golden eye, no time for sweetness
But a bitter kiss will bring him to his knees

You’ll never know how I watched you from the shadows as a child
You’ll never know how it feels to be the one who’s left behind
You’ll never know the days and nights, the tears, the tears I’ve cried
But now my time has come and time, time is not on your side

See him move through smoke and mirrors
Feel his presence in the crowd
Other girls they gather around him
If I had him I wouldn’t let him out

Golden eye, not lace or leather
Golden chain take him to the spot
Golden eye, I’ll show him forever
It’ll take forever to see what I’ve got

You’ll never know how I watched you from the shadows as a child
You’ll never know how it feels to get so close and be denied
It’s a gold and honey trap I’ve got for you tonight
Revenge is a kiss this time I won’t miss
Now I’ve got you in my sight

With a golden eye
Golden, golden eye
With a golden eye, golden eye

“Let’s put it this way I think we would all love to think that GoldenEye may make it onto the 3DS,” Activision’s Julian Widdows told ComputerAndVideoGames. “Today we’re talking about the Wii, but yeah if you were at E3 and you played with the 3DS it’s a great bit of hardware and we’d love to see it on there. But we don’t know, there’re no plans yet.

“I think if Nintendo approached us we’d consider anything.”

Oh yeah? How about Nintendo asks them to make Call od Duty games for the Wii as well, rather than bringing out downsized ports on it a year after the game’s actual release?

GoldenEye 007 is due out for the Wii later this year, it was announced at E3 this June.

Though the price seems very high, it is very likely that this is actually a bundle that comes with the game and the gun, which makes the price much more reasonable.

There are also two possibilities of what it looks like, one of which is just the original Nintendo Classic controller with a gold finish, while the other is the Wii Zapper style controller.

The new GoldenEye will support all possible controllers for the Wii (including the GameCube controller).

With the recent announcement of a GoldenEye remake exclusively for the Wii, talks surrounding the game have been floating around- some say the decision is a brilliant one, and that the Wii is the perfect console to house such a title, not to mention the fact that it’s only fair a remake of GoldenEye is made on Nintendo’s platform, just like it was more than a decade ago. Others say the game would have been better off on a more ‘hardcore’ title, that the Wii is not powerful or mainstream enough to host such an important title.

Activision, the most successful, sadistic and evil publisher in the market replied this way: “It’s a great opportunity,” said senior producer Brian Pass. “This game was originally on the N64, so there’s the nostalgia factor for people that are Nintendo fans. So we wanted to partner with Nintendo for this.

“The opportunity on the Nintendo Wii platform is huge. There’s roughly 12 million Wiis in North America. But it’s not really a console that a lot of shooter fans are playing on. So we wanted to offer them their own first-person shooter, that’s unique and exclusive to that console.”

“Maybe it’s because people don’t like using the Wii Remote and the Nunchuck. They don’t like using the pointing device. Now they’ve got the Classic Pro Controller. This is dual analogue stick. It’s got the exact same layout you find on PS3 or 360,” he added.

What do you think? Will GoldenEye be good on the Wii? Or will it be better off on the HD consoles, with all their online and high-def graphics? Tell us via your comments!

There have been rumblings of an Activision created Wii exclusive Goldeneye remake for quite some time now. Now, on the brink of Nintendo’s E3 showing today, it appears that the secret might have been leaked.

ComputerAndVideoGames.com seem to have leaked what appears to be a very legitimate trailer for the Goldeneye Wii exclusive. It seems to confirm many of the initial rumours- it’s coming this November, it has the likenss of Daniel Craig, and hell, from the trailer, it looks like the developers made a special attempt to retain everything that made the N64 version so great.

You can check out the awesome trailer below:

Most likely, we’ll have confirmation of this later in the day, during Nintendo’s E3 showing. Watch this space.

UPDATE: Nintendo Everything confirms that the video has been deleted from IGN, where it allegedly first appeared. Similarly, no trace of the video is to be found on YouTube. Odd…

Quite a few people have been waiting for a remake to classic N64 title Goldeneye 007 for some time now. The game, for those who didn’t know, was amongst the first to popularise FPS’s on a console, also introducing several unique multiplayer modes. And while the game got a spiritual sequel in Perfect Dark, there are many who want a true return of one of the N64’s best games.

Unfortunately, recent developments have ensured that this remains an elusive fantasy, due to a three way copyright struggle between Rare- who developed the original game-, Nintendo- who owned Rare when the game was made and therefore own the IP-, and Activision- who own the Bond liscence now.

Is a GoldenEye remake indeed headed our way?

It appears that the wait is over, and that all parties involved were able to find a way around these obstacles. As GoNintendo reports, apparently, the remake, developed by Eurocom (The World is Not Enough) and n-Space, is coming to both the DS and the Wii.

Eurogamer confirms this report, and pegs the release of the game for sometime this November. This would not only make it one of the biggest holiday titles this season, this might also lend the Wii with enough hardcore ammunition for the winter- considering that Call of Duty: Black Ops releases in that same timeframe as well.

Activision declined to comment on the story. Expect an announcement this E3.
