The contents of the demo have yet to be confirmed, but some content creators will go hands-on with it early, so expect more details in the coming days. Recently appearing at the Tribeca Festival (where it won the Tribeca Games Award), Goodbye Volcano High is about Fang and her struggles to complete high school in the face of an apocalyptic event.

Throughout the game, players can choose what they’d like to do, whether performing with the band Worm Drama (via a rhythm mini-game), chatting with friends or hanging out. There’s a branching narrative based on your choices, but it remains to be seen how the ending is affected.

Goodbye Volcano High releases on August 29th for PS4, PS5 and PC via Steam, retailing for $29.99. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

In an official statement, the developer revealed that it couldn’t “have met our June launch date without significant cuts to the quality and scope of the game.” Since it didn’t want to release “anything less than the best version of the game we have been making throughout our development cycle,” it decided to delay the game.

Of course, it also wants to avoid crunch. “Meeting our original launch date would require our team to work nights, weekends and early mornings to ship and risk burning people out.” Since June has so many games (Street Fighter 6, Final Fantasy 16, Diablo 4 and Layers of Fear at last count), the delay also “opens us up to more incredible opportunities and gives the game a greater chance of success.”

In the meantime, following the positive feedback to its recent demo, KO_OP will release another public demo soon. Stay tuned for more details on when that goes live.

Goodbye Volcano High is about Fang, who attends Volcano High and plays in a band with her friends Trish, Naser and Naomi. Between songwriting and conversing with friends, she also has to figure out how to spend her senior year, given that a meteor is en route to destroy everything.

Sweet Baby Inc has written the narrative, which stars Fang, an anthropomorphic dinosaur that attends Volcano High. With a meteor en route to destroying the world as she knows it, she must decide how to spend her senior year. Whether that involves writing songs, using social media, fixing her family, or just enjoying life, it all depends on the player.

The narrative branches based on one’s choices, and there’s a fairly solid rhythm game component while playing instruments. Other characters include members of the VVorm Drama band like Trish, Naomi and Naser, and you can get to know them as well.

In a press release, the developer said the delay was due to COVID-19 and the “ambitious scope of work.” “We care about this game and the story we’re telling so much and want to deliver something that is in line with what we’ve always envisioned. It’s what you deserve! We understand this delay might be disappointing, but we are confident this is the right decision and that it will be worth the wait.”

A delay was previously announced from August 2021 to 2022 due to the global pandemic. The narrative also saw a reboot, with Sweet Baby Inc. handling it from that point. Goodbye Volcano High is a choice-based adventure game about anthropomorphic dinosaurs approaching their senior year. Unfortunately, the world is about to end, so protagonist Fang needs to get her life sorted.

Along with writing songs, playing instruments, and interacting with different characters, you can also engage in social media. Based on the decisions made, the narrative can branch in various ways. The soundtrack is composed by Dabu of Dwarf Fortress fame, with Common Holly’s Brigitte Naggar providing the vocals. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

“It’s been a really hard year for many reasons, and the mental and physical health of the team has to come first. We don’t want to crunch, and we don’t want to put ourselves in stressful situations to finish the game by 2021 when we can take a little more time.” For more details on the process behind the new narrative, which was rebooted in June 2020, head here. More “fun updates” will be revealed in the coming months.

The previously revealed narrative focused on the members of the VVorm Drama band with Fang, Trish, Naomi and Naser as the central characters. It played out through their final year at Volcano High as graduation drew near. Though the central theme of a high school full of anthropomorphic dinosaurs seems intact, it’s hard to say how much of the old narrative remains.

Horizon Forbidden West

The world, such as it is in Horizon, is coming to an end and it’s up to Aloy to save it. Traveling to the fabled “forbidden west”, exploring the ruins of San Francisco, Utah and other regions, she encounters new tribes, new Machines and new mysteries. Based on what we’ve seen thus far, Horizon Forbidden West looks to be an even bigger and more emotional journey than the first game. It’s currently slated to release next year for PS4 and PS5.

Astro’s Playroom

The adorable robot Astro serve as a mascot of sorts for the PS5 with Astro’s Playroom being bundled with every console at launch. As a sequel to Astro Bot Rescue Mission, this platformer helps familiarize players with the DualSense’s various functions. Thankfully, it’s also a multi-hour game in its own right, full of different environments and platforming challenges.
