If you can't wait to return to the Valley of the Mines, preordering the remake on consoles could get you there a tad faster.

For those of you looking for a bit of very enjoyable nostalgia, Gothic Remake has finally opened its doors on preorders across its available platforms, announcing the news in style with a fresh trailer.

But that’s not the only good news. If you’re looking to play it on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, preordering it for $59.99 gets you a free copy of the original game, playable immediately. That’s quite a good deal if you haven’t played it and want to familiarize yourself with its systems and mechanics. If you’re a returning veteran, it’s going to work well as a refresher before you get to engage with all of the new additions that are coming your way.

For those of you who missed this one back in the day, it’s an excellent RPG that puts you in control of the Nameless Hero, a protagonist who finds themselves navigating the brutal Colony, a prison housing three factions with volatile relationships. You must find a way to escape with the help of a few allies you make along the way, although your choices may influence how those relationships play out over the course of the story.

It’s a title that has been quite popular over the years, and the remake remains true to its original vibe while making meaningful upgrades for modern audiences. Gothic Remake is available on June 5th, retailing for $49.99 on PC. Pre-orders even get Kai Rosenkranz’s soundtrack, which contains new tracks and reimagined “familiar melodies,” for free.

After a great year of games in 2025, 2026 is already shaping up to be as good if not better with some big hitters and a slew of inventive titles making their way to our screens.

We’re always on the lookout for great games, and we just got a bunch of them courtesy of the most recent State of Play. But what about a few great ideas that weren’t featured at the event? There are quite a few titles that are worthy of attention, standing out with unique value propositions and creative flourishes that deserve a spotlight.

Well, that’s exactly what we’re setting out to do. Here are a few recently announced titles that are sure to make 2026 and the next few years all the more exciting with their presence. Let’s get started!

1. Sons of Sparta

This one was quite a pleasant surprise, being made available right after its reveal at State of Play. If you love hard-hitting action, big set-piece battles, and a setting that goes all-in on spectacle and emotion, this one’s an absolute no-brainer.

It’s a 2D platformer that rewinds the clock, diving into a protagonist’s past as he fights alongside his brother and begins carving out his place on the battlefield. It leans heavily into tight platforming challenges, while its spear-and-shield combat proves surprisingly addictive, rewarding precision, smart parries, and well-timed evasions.

2. The Trilogy Remake

It was a welcome surprise to see the announcement land at the show, especially with a full remake project on the table for players. We’re eager to see how the updated versions modernize the classic gameplay loops, sharpen the pacing, and refine the combat feel while keeping the general flow and feel intact.

Either way, we’ll be jumping in the moment it’s playable, though it sounds like it may be a while, with development still in the early stages.

3. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse

It’s always great to join one of the Belmont’s on a monster hunting adventure, and this one’s setting in Paris has us fascinated by its gothic vibe and buttery smooth combat animations. Of course, the Vampire Killer is making its return to your side along with new weapon types that let you take the fight to whatever monstrosities the game throws at you.

While details about its story are a tad scarce at this time, we’re sure that Konami and the Dead Cells team are up to the task of making it one worthy of the long-standing franchise.

4. Gothic Remake

This is another remake that we’re itching to get our hands on considering just how much work is going into making it a game that stays true to the classic RPG while modernizing it to make it appealing to a new generation of players.

With the most recent in a series of videos about its development showcasing how the team has crafted its NPC character models from the ground up, this one’s shaping up to be a very fine addition to a slew of remakes of classic titles. Even better is the fact that it’s currently scheduled for a 2026 release.

5. Samson

This one’s quite unique in that it features a man in a leather jacket literally taking on the world in order to pay off his debts and save his family. That’s easier said than done, however, as the city of Tyndalston is not an ideal place where one can earn their fair share without a little bit of violence involved.

Miss a day’s payment, and you’re even deeper in the debt trap with both the law and the lawless out to get you. This action brawler is going to keep the pressure on you, but of course, it gives you everything you need to come out on top. Just don’t expect it to give you cash or mercy.

6. Aphelion

While we’ve seen our fair share of sci-fi adventures where humanity needs to move out from the Earth thanks to hostile living conditions, we’re still excited for Aphelion as it does things a little differently. You see, it focuses on two explorers stranded on a potentially new home for their fellow humans, their ship having crashed, and one of them being injured in the process.

With two protagonists with their own abilities and skills, and a story that explores the burden of duty in a dire situation, this one could pull at your heartstrings more than you’d like to admit.

7. John Wick

It’s always going to be great to see Keanu Reeves play another video game badass after his work as Johnny Silverhand. And John Wick’s excellent take on the character’s signature gun-fu style is looking very promising in the reveal trailer at State of Play, February 2026.

Saber Interactive looks like it’s staying true to the character while bringing all of the action and chaos that seems to chase him around to the table in a title we’re excited to play, although that could take a while.

8. Knight’s Path

When life gives you lemons, you pick up a sword and wander the land in search of redemption. At least, that’s what Arlyk, the protagonist of this action-RPG set in ancient Rome, sets out to do in order to rebuild his life as a noble.

With combat that’s looking like you’re going to earn your reputation as a swordsman without comparison, this one is going to have us spending a lot of time with mechanics that are designed to make each swing or slash of your blade count. Add in an immersive world and a potentially memorable cast of characters, and you have yourself a winner.

9. Kena: Scars of Kosmora

Kena is now older, wiser, and more determined to bring her unique blend of empathy and compassion to Kosmora, a brand new location that’s opened its doors to her. She’s more confident in her role as a guide and is determined to help the living as well as the dead as she goes about her duties.

That’s good news for us as it gives us more opportunities to experience a story that hopefully retains the wit and charm of Bridge of Spirits with a combat system that seems fast, fluid, and, most importantly, fun.

10. Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 2

We’re never going to say no to any opportunity to play more Metal Gear Solid, and the chance to replay MGS4 on a modern console without having to boot up our admittedly ancient PS3 is always a reason to celebrate.

And with Peace Walker retaining its online play components, this is a title we’re eager to get our hands on when August 2026 finally comes around. It’s time to round up your friends and take on a Metal Gear title that was built around cooperative play in this second addition to the Master Collection series from Konami.

11. GreedFall 2: The Dying World 1.0

The prequel to Greedfall has been in early access for a while now, but it’s finally ready to face the world this March. We’re stoked to return to Tree Fradee, a place where your choices carry wait and there’s always a bit of danger for those adventurers who care to go looking for it.

If this new title is anything like its predecessor, this one could have us spending more than a few hours finding out that our actions have consequences, and ones that we didn’t expect more often than not.

12. ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies

The spiritual successor to Disco Elysium is definitely up there with the more interesting concepts we’ve seen in recent years. You play as a former secret agent who harbors dark secrets and is now working as a PI after being forced out of the agency in disgrace.

The story is about rebuilding burned bridges as much as it is a mystery, where you need to think carefully about your actions while also paying attention to your crumbling mental state. That’s a lot to take in, but it’s going to be worth it from everything we’ve seen about this one.

13. Road to Vostok

Coming to early access in April 2026, this post-apocalyptic survival title takes you to Vostok, a harsh place in which even a silly error could mean the end of your adventure, with permadeath being a constant threat that hovers over you as you make your way through the story.

With a dynamic world that features a comprehensive weather system, multiple hostile factions all determined to give your character a premature death, and of course, a ton of loot to be gathered, Road to Vostok has us quite enthusiastic for all of it.

14. IKUMA – The Frozen Compass

Any adventure where you’re accompanied by a NPC is one that’s worth it in our book, and this one definitely caught our eye with its unique visuals and art style. You play as Sam, a boy who finds himself alone and stranded on an island in the Arctic with his loyal furry friend Ellie at his side.

Together, they must find a way home, braving all of the challenges in their way in a coming-of-age story that forces Sam to confront his past in order to ensure he has a future.

15. Project Windless

If you liked The Bird That Drinks Tears series of novels, this is a game that’s going to be a treat for you. It’s an open-world RPG set in the same universe as the books, placing you in the shoes (metaphorically, of course) of a giant humanoid bird who is armed with a pretty cool pair of dual blades and out on a mission that has you taking on several enemies who are quite skilled at coming at you from all directions based off what we’ve seen in the trailer.

This is a game that we’re eager to play thanks to its focused, single-player experience.

And that’s a wrap on our most anticipated titles for the rest of this year and perhaps a few that are going into 2027 and beyond. Of course, you can be sure you’re going to hear from us the moment new information on any one of them becomes available.

In this feature, we break down 20 of the biggest open-world games set to make waves in 2026 and beyond.

Open-world games continue to evolve at a rapid pace, and that trend doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon. From dense RPG epics and survival sandboxes to cinematic action adventures and experimental indies, the coming weeks and months are shaping up to be stacked with massive worlds begging to be explored. To that end, we are listing down 20 of the most promising open-worlds of 2026 and beyond.

Grand Theft Auto 6

Rockstar’s upcoming return to Vice City is easily the biggest open-world release on the horizon, and the perfect candidate to start off the list. Grand Theft Auto 6 promises a living, breathing world packed with dynamic NPC routines, reactive law enforcement, and an unprecedented level of environmental detail. The dual protagonists inspired by the adventures of Bonnie and Clyde look to be a promising storyline filled with several emotional moments. Of course, missions, side activities, and emergent mayhem are also important pillars of the experience – so we are definitely looking forward to this one.

The release date for the seminal 2001 RPG's remake was revealed through a trailer showcasing the world and gameplay of Gothic.

Developer Alkimia Interactive and THQ Nordic have announced that Gothic Remake will be coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on June 5. The release date was revealed through a brand new trailer that you can check out below. The studio has also confirmed that digital pre-orders for the RPG will be starting soon.

The trailer clocks in at just over 3 minutes in length, and gives us a look at Gothic Remake‘s primary setting of the Penal Colony of Khorinis and its Valley of Mines. The narrator emphasizes that, much like in any other prison, the colony runs on the simplest of all laws: power, obedience, and hierarchy.

We also get a look at a few of the factions competing for power in the Valley of Mines – the Bandits, the Mages, and the “self-proclaimed rulers”. The final third of the trailer gives us a quick glimpse at the combat, which will allow players to pick from a variety of weapons and tools like magic to take down their foes. Among the enemies waiting for the protagonist are bandits, skeletons, and even mythical creatures like golems and trolls.

Alkimia Interactive had kicked off a video series over the previous year providing a behind-the-scenes look at the development of Gothic Remake. Across various videos, the studio has showcased the differences between the original and the remake, its own artistic vision and changes in the visuals, and most recently, the remake’s improved character models.

August 2025 also saw the release of a gameplay trailer that provided a rough outline of the world through the words of legendary necromancer Xardas. The character spoke about the Khorinis mines and its prisoners, as well as the chaos caused by orcs waging war against the entire kingdom. The trailer also gave us a look at the fast-paced hack-and-slash combat that gives players plenty of freedom when it comes to spell casting.

Gothic was a 2001 RPG that focused on player freedom and immersion as its core pillar. Back when it first came out, the title was praised for its open world and giving players plenty of choices to make throughout its main story. Character progression was also unique at the time, since players would get skill points depending on their actions, but these skill points could only be spent on improving abilities by seeking out various trainers.

The title would go on to get two sequels, each of which would continue the story of the Nameless Hero with events taking place after his escape from the prison colony from the first game. The fourth game in the series—Arcania: A Gothic Tale—would see a radical shift in gameplay structure and story, resulting in poor critical and commercial reception.

In the meantime, players that want to check out the original trilogy can check out Gothic Classic, Gothic 2 Complete Classic and Gothic 3 Classic when they come out on PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S this year. PC players can already pick them up through Steam.

Familiar faces and places return to the fold with makeovers that are a perfect bridge between the RPG's past and modern gaming.

As Gothic Remake inches ever closer to its long-awaited release, the latest video in a series highlights how THQ Nordic and Alkimia Interactive are going all out to usher the classic RPG into a new era of gaming.

While previous showcases highlighted refinements to the plot and NPC scheduling, the new video, which you can check out below, demonstrates how the developers have approached their character models. Much work has gone into ensuring that the looks for key individuals remain true to the original while making them appealing to a modern, more discerning audience.

From the faces you see to the armor that characters wear in-game, there’s a lot of focus on accuracy and authenticity, and the results are looking quite immersive indeed. The changes are more than skin-deep, however, with the game’s armor system receiving a makeover. For instance, a piece of gear with resistance to frost will appear as an item of clothing that one would wear to protect from the real-world cold.

Each of these changes on its own might be written off as creative flourishes with no real impact on the gameplay, but taken as a whole, they begin to paint a picture of a remake that’s pulling out all the stops to bring a beloved title to life in a stylish new way. Launching sometime this year for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, it’s definitely shaping up into something special for long-time fans.

The video features developers and artists discussing the original Gothic's emphasis on a realistic medieval world with magic.

Following up on the teaser trailer for the third episode of its Making Of series from last week, developer Alkimia Entertainment has now released the third video that chronicles the making of its remake of classic RPG Gothic. As the trailer had indicated, the latest Making Of video focuses on the art of the game, and the studio’s vision for it.

As studio art director Daniel Candil put it in the video, “Gothic Remake was this fine line between being realistic and believable and also at the same time having this dark fantasy themed inside, no?” He went on to talk about wanting to ensure that the game felt believable and realistic when it came to its colours and how its textures look.

“Those opposite forces,” said Candil. “One is leaning more into naturalistic, believable, realistic world. The other one is leaning designs of creatures and everything to a more fantastical and dark, grim world. It’s a real world. It tries to be a real medieval simulation, I would say, but with a twist of dark magic and dark, you know, weird stuff happening.”

Head of studio and game director, Reinhard Pollice, spoke about how Alkimia looked at the classic Gothic game to get a good handle on how the remake should look. “We looked at it from the perspective of the full spectrum of Gothic games done by Piranha Bytes, because these are the canon Gothic games, and these are the ones we need to look at,” he said. “And I also feel like these are the ones that the fanbase like the most.”

The trailer also features other members of the development team, including junior 3D artist Ana Gonzalez, who talk about how they had to reinterpret the original RPGs in order to accurately recreate them for the upcoming remake by making use of more modern tools that allow for a higher level of fidelity. A through-line throughout the Making Of video is the fact that, not only does the game need to look realistic while still maintaining its undercurrent of dark, occult elements, it also needs to be believable.

Along with various members of the development talking about figuring out the right blend of inspirations from the original titles while trying to remake it for a modern audience, we also get to see plenty of footage from the game itself. As the video progresses, we get wide, panning shots of a host of different environments from the upcoming Gothic remake, from swamps to castles, and even some dungeons thrown in for good measure.

This is the third part of the Making Of series that Alkimia has been releasing for its Gothic remake, with the second part having come out back in April. The video at the time focused on the differences between the original and the upcoming remake. The first Making Of video, released all the way back in February, revolved around the “essence” of Gothic.

The Gothic remake is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S later this year. While the title doesn’t yet have a release date, check out some gameplay footage in the meantime.

In the trailer, developers from Alkimia spoke about how they didn't want to simply remaster the classic RPG with high-res textures.

Alkimia Interactive, the studio behind the Gothic remake, has released a trailer for the next episode of its Making Of video series for the upcoming game. This time around, the episode will focus on the Valley of Minds, and is slated for release some time next week. Check out the trailer for the Making Of video below.

The short minute-long trailer for the Making Of video gives us a look at the world of the original Gothic, and how the remake is going to reimagine it by making use of modern graphics technology. The trailer also features voice lines from various developers of the game talking about their vision for the remake, and how Alkimia didn’t want it to just be a nicer looking remaster.

Judging by some of the quotes and the gorgeous visuals showcased in the trailer, it looks like the next Making Of video will likely focus more on the graphical aspects of the upcoming remake. The studio will likely talk about some of the graphical technologies that were used in the making of the Gothic remake, as well as how its many beautiful vistas were reimagined with modern sensibilities in mind.

The Making Of series of videos has seen two releases so far, with the first one revolving around the “essence” of Gothic, while the second one focusing on the differences between the original game and the upcoming remake. In the more recent video, director Reinhard Pollice spoke about how the studio decided to expand on some aspects of the original.

“Our job was to find out what elements should stay exactly as they are and what elements should be expanded,” he said, going on to mention that the studio doesn’t want to bring in large, sweeping changes to the title. Rather, it is more interested in patching up plot holes or inconsistencies in its writing. “We’re not just configuring NPCs’ homes or schedules,” said lead game designer Javier Untoria about making the world feel alive. “We are creating a living world with a lot of character.”

In the first Making Of video, several developers from Alkimia Entertainment spoke about what the original Gothic meant to them and their memories of playing it, and how the studio plans on visualising the world for release on modern platforms to a much different audience.

“What was amazing to me the first time that I played Gothic was how you could solve a lot of situations by taking advantage of everyone,” said technical artist Roger Llovera. “Everyone would take advantage of you, of course, but then you have chances where you can take advantage of a character killing a Scavenger for you.”

The Gothic remake currently doesn’t yet have a release date. However, the studio, along with publisher THQ Nordic have confirmed that the game is being developed for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For those of you who might be curious about how the seminal RPG is being remade for modern platforms and audiences, there’s a demo available that gives you access to the Nyras Prologue on Steam.

The digital showcase will feature Titan Quest 2, Gothic Remake, Reanimal and Wreckfest 2 alongside a "few surprises" from the publisher.

Publisher THQ Nordic has announced that it will be hosting a showcase. Dubbed the THQ Nordic Digital Showcase 2025, the event will take place on August 1 and will be live-streamed for free through its official channels. Check out the teaser trailer announcing the showcase below.

The teaser shows off clips from a variety of different games, ranging from big-budget action titles to smaller-scaled 2D indie games. The genres for all these games also span across a wide variety, with the teaser including driving games, what appears to be a survival crafting game, a horror game, and even potentially a Souls-styled action RPG.

While the publisher hasn’t yet revealed the full list of games we can expect to see at this showcase, it has confirmed that some of its already-announced titles, including Gothic Remake, Titan Quest 2, Reanimal, The Eternal Life of Goldman, and Wreckfest 2 will be among the titles showcased at the event.

Gothic Remake is likely to be one of the flagship projects showcased at the event since it appears to be close to finishing off development. The game has been getting quite a few videos for it, including a series of Making Of videos where its developers talk about their experience in remaking a beloved cult-classic RPG.

“Our job was to find out what elements should stay exactly as they are and what elements should be expanded,” said studio director Reinhard Pollice in one of the Making Of videos from back in April. Pollice also spoke about narrative refinements being made in the remake to help patch up inconsistencies, plot holes, and contradictions.

Another Making Of video from back in February featured the developers talking about the “essence” of the seminal RPG. “What was amazing to me the first time that I played Gothic was how you could solve a lot of situations by taking advantage of everyone,” said technical artist Roger Llovera. “Everyone would take advantage of you, of course, but then you have chances where you can take advantage of a character killing a Scavenger for you.”

Titan Quest 2 – an action RPG that was first announced all the way back in 2023, will also be getting a showcase. The original Titan Quest was developed by a team that would go on to found Crate Entertainment and release Grim Dawn. The action RPG featured a unique skill and class system where players had the freedom to choose between two bespoke skill trees that would then make up their class.

The story of the original Titan Quest was a world-spanning one involving ancient Greek, ancient Egyptian, and ancient Chinese mythologies. The game also got an expansion that brought with it the Greek Underworld, where players had to take on Hades, as well as another expansion – Ragnarok – with the player facing off against Gods and other creatures from Norse mythology.

Another expansion – Eternal Embers – brought along even more content to the title in the form of an Act 6.

Among the changes made to Gothic in its remake will be the patching up of narrative inconsistencies, plot holes and contradictions.

Developer Alkimia Entertainment and publisher THQ Nordic have released the second part of the ongoing Making Of series for the Gothic remake. The latest video, which you can check out below, features the game’s developers discussing how they are remaking the title for a modern audience while still respecting the original.

While the remake of Gothic aims to be fairly faithful to the original when it comes to offering depth of gameplay as well as narrative, it will also feature some refinements to its gameplay and narrative that the studio hopes will elevate the classic RPG. This is along with a visual overhaul that makes use of more modern graphics technology and hardware.

“Our job was to find out what elements should stay exactly as they are and what elements should be expanded,” said studio director Reinhard Pollice. In the video, he explains that the narrative refinements being made to Gothic in the remake will mostly work to patch up inconsistencies, plot holes, and contradictions.

The studio is also focused on making sure that the Gothic remake features a believable, breathing open world that the original is known for. This goes beyond just setting up NPC schedules, according to lead game designer Javier Untoria. Rather, the studio wants to make a more in-depth living world.

“We’re not just configuring NPCs’ homes or schedules,” said Untoria. “We are creating a living world with a lot of character.”

The first Making Of video, released back in February, focused on the developers talking about the “essence” of Gothic. Throughout the video, developers spoke about wanting to tap into the key aspects of the original Gothic that have gone on to be beloved by its fans. This includes the lack of any sort of hand-holding, leaving players to figure things out on their own.

“What was amazing to me the first time that I played Gothic was how you could solve a lot of situations by taking advantage of everyone,” said technical artist Roger Llovera. “Everyone would take advantage of you, of course, but then you have chances where you can take advantage of a character killing a Scavenger for you.”

The Gothic remake doesn’t yet have a release date. It will be coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S later this year. In the mean time, PC players can check out the Nyras Prologue demo that was released back in February as part of Steam Next Fest. While originally intended to be a limited-time demo, it is still available for free.

In the mean time, the original Gothic series is also available at discounted prices through the official THQ Nordic store. The discounts also apply to merchandise related to Gothic, including collector’s editions, mugs, glasses, and T-shirts.

For more details about the remake, check out 22 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay that was released back in February. The video showcased early parts of Gothic, and even highlighted one of the key aspects of the game: its brutal combat. We also got to see what early-game sections like the mines and adjoining countryside look like.

The standalone demo follows a new prisoner, Nyras, and lasts for an hour, providing a look at the revamped visuals and "limited" mechanics.

Last week, Alkimia Interactive and THQ Nordic premiered 22 minutes of gameplay from the upcoming Gothic Remake. Today, players can go hands-on courtesy of the free demo, “Nyras Prologue.” It’s an hour-long standalone experience and introduces players to the world and its various mechanics.

Instead of the Nameless Hero, players control Nyras, a new prisoner in the Colony who must fight to survive. Since this is a self-contained experience, the full progression and sense of freedom from the game aren’t available. Instead, players will explore a “small section” of the world and a “limited” set of mechanics.

Nevertheless, you can still experience the gorgeous remade visuals (courtesy of Unreal Engine 5) and the overall attention to detail. There’s also an Achievement to unlock required to collect all the PC version’s Achievements.

Nyras Prologue is available until March 3rd as part of the Steam Next Fest. Gothic Remake is available later this year for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
