With this feature, we will be taking a look at 20 of the best PS3 games of all time - games that have left a long-lasting impact on the generation of gamers.

The PlayStation 3 generation was a major turning point for Sony, marking an era where technical showcases truly began to define what was possible in gaming. It was a time of great innovation when studios took bigger creative risks and entire genres evolved in meaningful ways. From emotionally driven adventures and sprawling open worlds to tight shooters and innovative racers, the PS3 amassed a library that still holds up remarkably well today. To that end, we are counting down 20 of the best PS3 games of all time.

The Last of Us

The Last of Us stands tall as one of the defining experiences of the PS3 era, known for expertly blending survival horror gameplay with deeply humane storytelling. Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic adventure follows Joel and Ellie across a ruined post-apocalyptic America, and the gameplay balances tense stealth encounters with quiet, character-driven moments that keep you glued to the edge of the screen at all times. Combat feels desperate and grounded, emphasizing judicial use of resources and quick thinking. What truly elevates the game, however, is its writing and performances, which help it be relevant to this date.

We rank every game in Sony's racing sim series from worst to best.

Through all the ups and downs that Sony’s first party output has seen since the early days of the original PlayStation, there’s one franchise that has stuck around as a mainstay and a pillar for the company, enjoying unwavering success with most of its outings. Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo has been a trailblazer for as long as it’s been around, and now that it has made a triumphant return with the recently released Gran Turismo 7, we, and many others, have been thinking back on the celebrated series’ incredible history, and how it has progressed as time has gone on. To that end, here, we’re going to rank every Gran Turismo game till date from worst to best- though even at its worst, this series has had more to offer than most other in the genre.

#9. GRAN TURISMO (PSP)

Gran Turismo’s portable debut (and to date, its only portable outing) didn’t arrive easily, and though those many years of development and delays didn’t result in the stellar quality that this series is generally known for, Gran Turismo for the PSP was by no means a slouch. Offering surprisingly realistic visuals (for its time, and for the hardware, if nothing else), tight simulation and driving mechanics, and a healthy roster of vehicles to choose from, the portable racing sim made a strong impression on most who played it. There were clear issues, of course, with the lack of upgrades and a traditional career mode being chief among them, but even so, it was a solid taste of Polyphony Digital’s series on the go.

#8. GRAN TURISMO 6

Gran Turismo 6 arrived smack dab in the middle of the biggest lull the series has experienced to date- and it showed. It did, of course, excel in all the ways that a GT game is expected to- it had a sizeable roster of vehicles, was brimming with its love for detail, authenticity, and attention to detail, and as always, its driving mechanics were second to none. Some questionable decisions, however, dragged the experience down in unfortunate ways, from its iffy microtransactions to its unnecessary focus on multiplayer gameplay.

#7. GRAN TURISMO 5

Gran Turismo 5 was where the series’ downward trajectory began (and lasted until not that long ago). Arriving after a long and protracted development cycle, GT5 was far, far from a bad game, and like pretty much every other game on this list, it’s still probably one of the best racing sims we’ve ever played, at least where its driving and sim mechanics are concerned, while its incredibly vast offerings in terms of features, tracks, and vehicles were mighty impressive. But with a half-assed damage system, frustrating progression in its career mode, and surprisingly little improvements being made over its direct predecessor, Gran Turismo 5, for all of its excellence, didn’t quite live up to expectations.

#6. GRAN TURISMO SPORT

Gran Turismo Sport remains one of the most controversial and divisive games in Polyphony Digital’s series- and looking back at the state it was in at launch, it’s not surprising to see why. There was no shortage of core issues with the game, its overriding emphasis on online multiplayer being chief among them, especially since it came at the cost of a traditional single player experience. The fact that the game launched with a disappointingly small selections of tracks and vehicles didn’t much help matters either. Sure, Polyphony Digital’s post-launch support did eventually turn GT Sport into a far better game than it was when it launched, but it was still far from the game series fans wanted it to be.

#5. GRAN TURISMO 2

Gran Turismo 2 is, in essence, the prime example of a perfect iterative sequel. Following up on its revolutionary predecessor was by no means an easy task, but Polyphony Digital chose to do it in the best way possible- by expanding on all the biggest strengths of the first game. More cars, more tracks, a better physics engine. There’s an argument to be made that perhaps its unambitious nature as a sequel held it back from being as memorable as the first game was, but if all you’re talking about is execution of ideas, there’s little to dislike here.

#4. GRAN TURISMO

The one that started it all. In pretty much every way, the original Gran Turismo has been thoroughly outdone by its many successors, but given the game’s significance, you can’t help but respect it. For its time, it was an absolutely revelation. It looked amazing, it controlled like a dream, it was brimming with an impressive roster of modes, cars, and tracks, and above all else, it established ideas and mechanics that have by now become staples not only of the series, but an entire genre.

#3. GRAN TURISMO 4

Now that we’re in the top 3, there’s very, very little separating the three games that are left, and there’s a strong case to be made for each of these three being the definitive Gran Turismo experience. Gran Turismo 4 is, for many people, still one of the best racing games out there. It’s the quintessential GT game, with excellent driving and physics, best-in-class visuals, and oodles of content to keep players busy for dozens upon dozens of hours. Not everything in the game was equally fleshed out, but there was more than enough here to impress even the most cynical players.

#2. GRAN TURISMO 7

Gran Turismo had been in a bit of a slump of form since the launch of GT5, with the multiplayer-centric GT Sport being something of a nadir for the series, so there was a great deal riding on Gran Turismo 7. It pretty much had to be a return to form- and boy did it succeed in doing that. For fans of the series, the genre, and car culture in general, this game is a dream come true. Its single player component is densely packed and ingeniously structured, the game looks absolutely gorgeous, and the level of authenticity and realism displayed here just blows you away. It’s also probably the most approachable game in the series in a long, long time, so it may very well bring in a massive audience- even by Gran Turismo standards.

#1. GRAN TURISMO 3: A-SPEC

It’s hard to top Gran Turismo 3. It is, in every sense of the word, an unabashed masterpiece. It may not have been overflowing with content the way something like Gran Turismo 2 was, or Gran Turismo 7 now is, but the game’s biggest strength lay elsewhere- in how focused and tightly designed it was. Its roster of vehicles was full of cars that felt amazing to control, it had some of the best-designed tracks this series has ever had, and for its time, it looked unbelievably amazing. It’s not just the best Gran Turismo game, it may very well even be the best racing game ever made, period.

Polyphony Digital's long-awaited racing sim is almost here. Check out how it stacks up to its predecessors in terms of features, online play and more.

As any fan of the series will tell you, the launch of a new Gran Turismo is a momentous occasion. Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 7 is perhaps its biggest release yet and will launch on March 4th for PS4 and PS5. How does it stack up to Gran Turismo 6 and Gran Turismo Sport in terms of features? What are some of the key differences to be aware of? Let’s take a look at 11 of them here.

Cars

With Gran Turismo, as with many racing franchises, the launch line-up of cars is just the beginning. Gran Turismo 6 released with about 1197 cars – subsequent updates would bring that total to over 1240 cars from manufacturers like Alpine, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini and so on. Gran Turismo Sport would launch with 168 cars, about a fraction of its predecessor, but numerous updates over the years brought that to a staggering 338 cars. It also marked the first time in the series that Porsche cars would be available to drive. This carries over into Gran Turismo 7 which promises over 400 cars at launch.

Tracks

Each Gran Turismo title launches with a selection of tracks across several locations worldwide. Some are based on real-world circuits while others are completely original and much like the number of cars, additional tracks are added through updates. Gran Turismo 6 offers 41 tracks with a total of 86 layouts. Some tracks have alternate versions like Nürburgring’s Nordschleife and 24 hour versions or the International and National versions of Silverstone Circuit.

Gran Turismo Sport features some 32 locations with 82 different tracks to race on including the famous Goodwood Motor Circuit, Red Bull Ring, Brands Hatch GP and Willow Springs. Gran Turismo 7’s full list of tracks has yet to be revealed but Polyphony Digital has promised more than 90 tracks including Tokyo Expressway, Fuji International Speedway, Daytona International Speedway, Goodwood Motor Circuit and of course, Nürburgring along with Nürburgring 24h.

Dynamic Weather and Time of Day

When Gran Turismo Sport first launched, it was missing some features that helped Gran Turismo 6 to stand out. One of these was dynamic weather and time of day. You could no longer see the weather vary during races or experience day/night cycles – these could be selected prior to a race though. In comparison, Gran Turismo 6 not only offered both but also provided accurate positions for stars in the sky, adding that much more to the immersion.

Gran Turismo 7 also features dynamic weather and time of day but on a larger scale with the developer going as far as using meteorological data and conditions specific to each region to accurately simulate cloud formation. As you’d expect, everything from the puddles that evaporate over time to the track’s surface temperature all have an effect on the physics. Producer Kazunori Yamauchi also confirmed in an interview with GTPlanet from September 2021 that time progression could be adjusted for races, meaning that the day could transition that much quicker to night and vice versa.

Interestingly enough, however, dynamic environmental features won’t apply to all tracks in Gran Turismo 7. Nurburgring Nordschleife, Tsukuba Circuit and Circuit de la Sarthe are all confirmed to support it at present.

Arcade Mode

While the Gran Turismo series has been known for a variety of different modes, it’s Arcade Mode that allows for simply jumping in and racing. Gran Turismo 6’s Arcade Mode was fairly bare-bones at launch, offering three types of races – Single Race, Time Trial and Drift Trial along with two-player split-screen support for multiplayer. Gran Turismo Sport expanded on this slightly more with Single Race, Time Trial, Drift Trial and Custom Race along with the VR Tour and two-player split-screen multiplayer. Interestingly enough, Gran Turismo 7’s Arcade Mode hasn’t been completely outlined. Single Race and split-screen multiplayer for two players have been confirmed but more details are still awaited.

Campaign

Of course, it’s all about the campaign in Gran Turismo and each game has offered its own take on the same. Gran Turismo 6’s Career Mode saw players partaking in races across numerous Classes, starting from Novice Class and progressing through different Cups and Championships, completing license tests and other events to progress. There’s also the Red Bull Challenge, which offers driving lessons for formula cars and provides gift cars, and the Ayrton Senna trials added via DLC.

Gran Turismo Sport divided its campaign into several key modes, starting with Driving School which provided a series of challenges with bronze, silver and gold levels assigned based on completion time. This was meant to teach the core concepts of the game, which Mission Challenge expanded on further by offering eight stages with eight challenges each. Circuit Experience involved learning each aspect of a track before fully racing on it but a proper series of Cups would come slightly later with GT League. It offered four different Leagues, each with their own unique events and Cups; leveling up would unlock subsequent leagues. There’s also the Lewis Hamilton Time Trial Challenge that was added via paid DLC.

At the very least, Gran Turismo 7 is going back to basics with GT Simulation Mode being available from launch. It’s fairly straightforward – you purchase cars, participate in races and Cups, and earn credits to unlock new cars. Cars can be tuned to improve their performance along the way. Intertwined with this is GT Cafe, a new mode which doles out Car Collection Menus that are completed through race victories and championship wins. As you fill up the Menus, you’ll learn more about the history of different brands and even speak to the creative minds behind them.

B-Spec Mode

B-Spec Mode has always been an interesting take on race driver management in Gran Turismo, allowing players to raise an AI driver and have them partake in races. You could hire multiple drivers and raise their skills using B-Spec Points earned from different events. Upon reintroducing the same in Gran Turismo 6, Polyphony made several changes. Raising drivers was gone and instead, you could select different paces for the driver (with a quicker pace resulting in more speed but also risk more mistakes). You could also directly interfere with an AI driver’s racing. B-Spec Mode was absent throughout the entirety of Gran Turismo Sport’s lifespan and while Gran Turismo 7 won’t launch with it, there is some hope of its return.

Sophy, an advanced racing AI developed specifically for Gran Turismo, will be added to Gran Turismo 7 in the future. Yamauchi told GT Planet that Sophy could be a teacher for players, act as a student or even serve as a racing companion. However, he “wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a B-Spec mode, where the player is the race director and Sophy is the driver.” This could result in the most realistic version of B-Spec yet, if it ever happens. Never say never.

GT Sport Mode

One of the biggest additions that Gran Turismo Sport brought to the franchise was Sport Mode which presented a more serious competitive racing structure. It essentially offered three daily races, which reset each week, and players were matched on the basis of their Driver Rating and Sportsmanship Rating. The former is more about skill while the latter focuses on racing etiquette (like not smashing into other races or ignoring racing flags). Ratings could range from E (the lowest) to S (the highest) – the S Driver Rating category consisted of the top 200 racers in the world.

Gran Turismo Sport will see the return of Sport Mode though aside from offering “serious racing with players all over the world,” its changes have yet to be detailed.

Offline Play

Offline play has been a point of discussion for years, especially given the amount of content that requires an internet connection. Gran Turismo 6 offered a fairly significant amount of offline content but when servers went offline, features like the Seasonal Events, Community and the Track Path Editor became unavailable. With Gran Turismo Sport, pretty much everything save for Arcade Mode requires being online. Gran Turismo 7 is the same – only Arcade Mode is playable offline – in order to prevent any kind of cheating. While there’s been no danger of Gran Turismo Sport servers going offline, it’s still something to keep in mind for its future (along with that of Gran Turismo 7).

Replays

Replays in Gran Turismo 6 are fairly straightforward – you can rewatch a completed race, choose different views or switch between Full View and Live Timing, and change the camera target. There are also options for pausing, rewinding and fast forwarding. You could also select between regular and Best Lap Replays with the latter only showcasing the fastest lap in a race.

Gran Turismo Sport added onto this with options like rewinding and fast-forwarding 10 seconds at a time, frame by frame advancement and so on. You could also set the Camera Type to Standard for more dynamic movement or Variable for easier viewing and capture Race Photos for key moments.

Replays return in Gran Turismo 7 and feature a new twist – Music Replay, which generates a replay camera based on the background music used. This means that camera positions and cuts are generated dynamically, thus providing a unique viewing experience each time. On top of this, replays also support ray tracing, resulting in even higher fidelity.

Photo Travel and Scapes

If photographing your cars in various real-world locations is the name of the game, then Photo Travel was for you in Gran Turismo. It essentially allowed for taking pictures of vehicles in real-world locations. Gran Turismo 6 was unfortunately limited on this front, only offering a whopping five locations to photograph one’s vehicle.

Gran Turismo Sport overhauled this with the introduction of Scapes. Instead of in-game versions of real-world locations, it offered real-life photos of the same to serve as backgrounds. Odd as it sounded at the time, it offered way more depth and variety to photograph one’s vehicle in (and supported 4K resolution, HDR and Wide Color). GT Sport would eventually have 1,017 locations in Scapes with many added over time in updates.

Scapes in Gran Turismo 7 look to up the ante even further with more than 2,500 different locations to take pictures in. And yes, along with HDR support, ray tracing is also available here along with various effects. It’s also much easier to showcase your work to the world and favorite different pictures from other players.

From obvious treks in galaxy-spanning adventures to unlikely visits in a racing sim, these are video game moon visits that still stand out in our memory.

Humankind has been enamoured by the moon for as long as anyone can remember, and that’s affected our entertainment as well. Games, of course, haven’t been immune to that obsession. More than a few times, games have taken giant leaps and taken us right to the lunar surface, and here, we’re going to talk about a few of them that did exactly that.

NOTE: This feature contains spoilers for every game that is mentioned. If we begin talking about a game you don’t want spoiled, skip ahead to the next entry.

WOLFENSTEIN: THE NEW ORDER

Wolfenstein as a series has never been afraid of flights of fantasy, and The New Order, in typical Wolf fashion, has plenty of that going on as well. To secure lunar launch codes, BJ infiltrates a Nazi base on the moon, killing Nazis, destroying drones, and even donning a spacesuit and walking on the moon’s surface. It’s one of the game’s best missions that serves to exemplify how far-flung the series can get with its stories (in a good way).

Although Gran Turismo Sport has been a commercial success for Sony, we can help but wonder whether the series will ever return to its roots.

When thinking about simulation racing games in this console generation, it’s not unreasonable for your first thought to be “Forza”. Microsoft’s first-party sim-racer series has been wildly successful, and for many of us, it’s been the go-to franchise for quite some time. But simulation racing games weren’t always synonymous with Forza; there was a time when Polyphony Digital’s hardcore series, Gran Turismo, reigned supreme. While the long-time franchise continues to sell exceptionally well, there’s no doubt that it isn’t the young, spry series it used to be.

Back in 1992, producer Kazunori Yamauchi compiled a group of seven developers to create Gran Turismo for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation console. He aimed to bring simulation racing to the mainstream, and he was stopping at nothing to achieve that goal. For him, Gran Turismo’s development was his entire life. Yamauchi once stated to Autoweek: “It took five years. In those five years, we could not see the end. I would wake up at work, go to sleep at work. It was getting cold, so I knew it must be winter. I estimate I was home only four days a year.”

After those grueling five years of development time, its 1997 release was met with widespread critical and commercial success. It still holds the crown as the best-selling original PlayStation game to this day, having shipped over 10.85 million copies in its lifetime. And it’s no secret why; with 140 cars, 11 tracks, and great AI for its time, Gran Turismo was one of the most fleshed-out and impressive racing games ever made at that time in videogames, effectively achieving exactly what Yamauchi had hoped – mainstream appeal.

The unexpected success gave Yamauchi the drive to get to work on a sequel with hopes of improving the formula even further. By 1999, Gran Turismo 2 was hitting store shelves with an unprecedented 650 cars from a variety of manufacturers, making it even more robust and impressive than the original game. Unfortunately, a collection of errors and glitches plagued the game’s release, perhaps due to its rapid development, prompting Sony to issue updated replacements for those experiencing problems.

Luckily for the franchise, these problems didn’t seem to stop the game from receiving universal acclaim again, and Yamauchi was ready to keep things going. With the move to PlayStation 2, Polyphony Digital was able to improve the graphics substantially, allowing Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec to boast some of the system’s most impressively-detailed cars and tracks. This increase in detail meant the team had to reduce the amount of cars available in the game to 180 in order to ensure the quality remained high across the board.

The reduction in cars was a small price to pay for the beautiful graphics and enhanced gameplay. It didn’t take long before critics were singing the game’s praises and falling in love with its improved features and gameplay. It’s still one of gaming’s best-selling titles of all time, and is currently considered the second-best racing game of all time by aggregate site GamingRankings.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Yamauchi once again set out to continue his life’s work. Gran Turismo 4: Prologue teased the upcoming launch of Gran Turismo 4 with a sneak peak at the new and improved features Polyphony Digital were bringing to the full game’s launch. While the title only launched in Japan and Europe, it still went on to sell over a million copies.

When the full release of Gran Turismo 4 finally launched in North America in 2005, gamers and journalists were amazed. With 51 tracks and an unprecedented 700+ cars from 80 manufacturers, it was an awe-inspiring addition to the successful franchise, propelling it even further than before. The addition of pickup trucks, a B-spec mode that allowed players to simulate the job of a racing crew chief, and massively improved physics, all combined to make Gran Turismo 4 one of gaming’s most sought-after titles that year. It went on to once again become one of the best-selling video games of all time.

With the arrival of the PS3, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’s Australian and European launch once again raised the bar for the series with better graphics and new gameplay elements, selling 5.09 million copies and becoming the second-highest grossing PlayStation exclusive. So, what game could have possibly unseated it from first place? None other than the full release of Gran Turismo 5, of course.

The fifth entry introduced gamers to 16-player online racing, a feature that saw players around the world ecstatic at the chance to finally pit their skills against other sim-racing fans. It also added the franchise’s first external and mechanical damage models and the ability to turn cars over during a race. Add that to the fact that the game offered over a thousand cars and plenty more offered through DLC, Gran Turismo 5 was doing what the series was always best known for: Improving beyond everyone’s wildest expectations.

However, the game was criticized for its mixed graphics and the detail of standard cars which lacked cockpit views. Furthermore, many critics and fans were not happy with the game’s damage model and the uneven AI. The game finished up with a rating of 84 on Metacritic which isn’t bad by any means but this when the series started to lose a bit of steam as well. Compared to GT1, GT2 and GT3 which were rated way above 90, and GT 4 coming very close to 90, one could easily see some cracks forming in the series’ quality.

Gran Turismo eventually showed up on Sony’s PSP in 2009, going on to sell nearly 5 million copies and becoming one of the best-selling games for the handheld. The game might’ve been on a portable system, but that didn’t hold it back very much. Running at a solid 60fps with over 800 cars and 45 tracks, Gran Turismo on PSP refused to be thought of as a lesser entry. Still, the game’s critical response was mixed, with many criticizing its lack of career mode and upgradeable vehicles. The game finished off at a rating of 74 over at Metacritic.

With Gran Turismo 6 launching near the end of the PlayStation 3’s lifecycle in 2013, some expected the game to see less success than previous entries. And while it didn’t initially see a slow takeoff in North America, the game went on to be a critical and commercial success. However, despite the fact that it offered a host of improvements to graphics and car customization, Gran Turismo 6 was criticized for its focus on its online component and microtransactions, marking the first time a franchise had seen many of its long-time supporters lose faith in Yamauchi and Polyphony Digital’s integrity. It finished with a Metacritic score of 81.

As new sim-racers like Forza had entered the playing field over the years leading up to Gran Turismo 6, gamers were offered new places to get their fix, leading many to speculate Gran Turismo’s days as the industry king were nearing the end. Forza was growing from strength to strength with its Motorsport and Horizon brands, while Gran Turismo was struggling to keep up.

2017 brought the release of Gran Turismo Sport and it saw a drastic change in direction for the franchise. It placed emphasis on competitive online driving and eSports, lacking a single player campaign when it launched. It also lacked dynamic weather and day/night cycle thanks to its always online requirement. However, it also improved on vehicle design and PvP elements making it a solid entry. But for most of the old fan base, GT Sport came off as a disappointment. Although Polyphony Digital have continuously added updates in the form of single player races, tracks and cars, and have started to gain traction again, many fans haven’t really forgotten its underwhelming launch and its disappointing Metacritic score of 75.

Gran Turismo Sport simply wasn’t Gran Turismo 7 though, and the desire for a core entry in the franchise remains. Yamauchi has gone on record promising that a new game in the series is on the horizon, and there has been speculation that the game may even serve as a massive boon to the PlayStation 5 launch lineup. There is no doubt that quality wise, Gran Turismo has seen a dip since the PlayStation 3 days. Gran Turismo Sport is a shining example of how developers can convert an underwhelming experience at launch to a fantastic one almost two years late.

We just hope that this isn’t the case with the next Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo as a brand has defined each PlayStation era and the next game needs to get it right from day one. We hope it will be beautiful combination of the past, present, and future games. If Yamauchi’s dedication to the series is any indication of its future, we’re hopeful that not only it will be worth the way, but it will stand toe to toe against fellow competitors.

With the release of Gran Turismo Sport, the team will be ending online support for Gran Turismo 6 early next year.

The latest entry in the Gran Turismo series is Gran Turismo Sport and it was released only recently. Now, on the official website for the franchise, Polyphone Digital has announced that they will soon be shutting down the online servers for Gran Turismo 6.

The online servers will be shut down on March 28, 2018 at 12:00 UTC. Additionally, distribution of DLC content will stop by January 31st. While the game can still be played in its single-player mode, the game will no longer support any online functionality. In-game credits will becomes useless after this point so it would be wise to make use of whatever remaining in-game credits you might have before the given date.

The team behind the game expressed their gratitude to the community who supported the game by buying it and stated that they will “continue to further improve the online services for the currently available title Gran Turismo Sport.” Although Gran Turismo Sport is a solid game, it has some issues which we discussed in our review. Hopefully, the team will continue to work hard on the game and we’ll be able to notice improvements soon enough.

There are undeniable visual improvements.

There has been this general idea that the upcoming Gran Turismo Sport isn’t as much of a graphical powerhouse as the previous games in the series have been. And while it is true that it is not as immediately visually striking as the series used to be in its heyday, a simple comparison with older games reveals that there are some impressive visual evolutions that it has seen nonetheless.

Thanks to these screenshots, which you can see for yourself below, we have an idea of not only the evolution of the series’ graphics across GT4, GT6, and GT Sport, but also some really great images of GT Sport in general. These batches come to us courtesy of Yiazmat, dumb, dumb again, and dumb one final time on NeoGAF.

You can check them out for yourself below- it is undeniable that the game does look pretty. Of course, I suppose the larger question we will all be asking is- does it look as good as the upcoming Forza 7, which launches later this year?

Gran Turismo Sport launches exclusively on the PS4 on October 17. It will have PS4 Pro enhancements, and PSVR support as well.

Latest figures as of June 30th.

Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo series continues to climb in terms of unit sales. The developer updated its website to announce that Gran Turismo 6 has sold more than five million units since releasing in 2013 while the series overall has 76.8 million units sold as of June 30th.

That’s not bad considering how old the franchise is (the first game released in December 1997 for PS One in Japan). Earlier, the developer revealed that Gran Turismo 6 had sold 4.96 million units as of March 31st, which equates to 50,000 more copies sold in the three months till its newest milestone.

Polyphony Digital is currently working on Gran Turismo Sport for the PlayStation 4 which will also support PlayStation VR. Along with a more professional racing backdrop, players can even earn a legitimate racing license by completing various tasks and challenges in-game. Gran Turismo Sport releases on November 15th but what do you think of Gran Turismo 6′s continued success? As always, let us know in the comments.

Gran Turismo Sport looks underwhelming graphically- which is shocking, because this is a franchise that has been known to set the standard for graphics for console racers for almost two decades now. With there being only six months left before the game is out, it is hard to see it looking substantially or definitively better than it does right now.

That said, a lot of the hate that the game is getting for its graphics also seems to be exaggerated. The common sentiment seems to be that Gran Turismo Sport looks no better than a PS3 game- whereas a head to head comparison of the PS4 title with Gran Turismo 6, the final PS3 Gran Turismo game, reveals that Sport has, even in its current graphically disappointing state, seen a whole lot of noticeable visual improvements over the PS3 game, including better lighting and shadows, as well as lens flare improvements.

You can check out the comparison video taking the two games head to head for yourself below. Do you think the graphical improvement is acceptable? Or do you want the developers to fix up the graphics before the game’s November 18 release date on PS4?

And other sales figures from the franchise.

Ahead of the launch of Gran Turismo Sport next year, Polyphony Digital have gone ahead and updated their website. Most of the website is just standard stuff, showing off the company, their history, and their products. However, more interestingly for all of us, they also updated the sales numbers for each Gran Turismo title on their website- and we learned some pretty interesting things along the way.

For example, we now know that Gran Turismo 5 was definitely a success for the company, selling nearly 12 million units worldwide. Gran Turismo’s PSP outing was also wildly successful, selling 4.6 million units worldwide (which makes it the highest selling PSP game of all time). However, it appears as though the last outing in the franchise, Gran Turismo 6 on the PS3, fared less well, selling only 4.7 million units across the board, a number which is a dramatic decline from just how well the rest of the numbered games in the series have managed to perform so far.

But if even a game like GT6, generally considered disappointing, and having released only on the PS3 with little marketing after the PS4 had already launched, could move nearly 5 million copies worldwide, it bodes well for the overall health for the series- who knows, Gran Turismo Sport may set the charts on fire next year again. On a related the series has solid a massive 76.5 million copies. Can it reach the 100 million mark? Only time will tell.
