These shooters may not be the best the genre has to offer, but they definitely deserve more recognition than they get.

Given the popularity of the third-person shooter genre, those on the lookout for another one to play never have any shortage of options to pick from, and though there’s obviously every case to be made for what are regarded as the genre’s best games, there are also plenty of other, less popular third-person shooters out there that perhaps deserve more recognition than they deserve. Here, we’re going to talk about fifteen such third-person shooters that might not be the best of the best the genre has to offer, but do still stand out as some of its more overlooked and underrated offerings.

SHADOWS OF THE DAMNED

The textbook example of a diamond in the rough, Shadows of the Damned is the perfect game to kick this feature off with. Grasshopper Manufacture’s 2011 cult classic is a game that has garnered an increasingly sizeable fan following over the years, and it’s easy to see why, whether that’s because of its stylish action, its sense of humour, or the abundance of character and personality that it’s overflowing with. Hopefully, its upcoming remaster will bring a much larger audience to the game.

Rockstar's vaunted open world series is full of memorable missions.

The Grand Theft Auto series is famous for laying popularizing the open world sandbox genre, allowing players to do whatever and go wherever they want (within limits, of course). However, it’s also incredibly consistent with its mission design, doling out hilarious and tragic moments alike. Let’s take a look at 15 of the best missions throughout the series.

Cop Land – Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City released one year after Grand Theft Auto 3 and while its style and setting distinguished it greatly, the missions were a whole other level of ridiculous. When a bomb fails to go off in North Point Mall, Tommy comes up with a plan to infiltrate the mall and detonate it himself. How? Why, by beating up police officers with Lance and posing as them. The detonation is a success but also results in a 5-star Wanted level, thus facilitating an even crazier escape.

Rockstar Games appears to be re-releasing classic PS2 titles for the PS4 as ports.

Rockstar Games is keeping awfully busy these days and though it’s only really showcased Red Dead Redemption 2 as it’s big new game in development, there’s a lot more that’s going on at the studio.

Take for instance the fact that the Entertainment Software Rating Board has rated Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne and Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition for the PlayStation 4.

Though one of these eventually made its way to the PS3 as a port – namely Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories – the rest are better known for releasing during the PlayStation 2 era. This seems to be the case of Rockstar re-releasing these titles as classic PS2 games for the PS4 rather than full-fledged HD remastered ports.

Rockstar is currently busy working on an HD remastered version of L.A. Noire for the Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch though. It’s out on November 14th for those platforms.
