Two legendary RPGs make their way to the Nintendo Switch.

Game Arts’ legendary RPG Grandia, and its follow up Grandia 2, will both be headed over to the Nintendo Switch, publisher Gung Ho announced today (via IGN). The original games are widely regarded as being among the greatest RPGs of all time, praised for their gorgeous art and their innovative battle system (the latter is regarded as being peerless by many genre veterans to this day). Now, they will be made available to play on a modern console for the first time.

The original Grandia was released as a showcase RPG for Sega’s Saturn, and was uniquely optimized for its difficult hardware. It was later ported to the original PlayStation (it was this version that was subsequently localized and released in the west by the now defunct Working Designs). Grandia 2 would follow on the next generation consoles, and while it wasn’t quite as well received as the first, is still pretty beloved overall. Switch fans who have been treated to some fantastic RPGs on the system, such as the just released Octopath Traveler (which has an innovative battle system of its own) are likely to enjoy what Grandia offers.

The best part? The game is due out this Winter, and we will see more of it at PAX West. Plus, there is more good news: Grandia 1 will be coming to Steam (the second game was released for Steam already some years ago). So it’s just RPG goodness all around, it seems.

They're not immediately apparent but video games can teach quite a lot to the average player.

We’ve all had that moment in a video game where it’s felt more real than the code or the graphics governing. Like it’s very essence has influenced us in different ways, both big and small, throughout our lives. There are life lessons to be learned in video games and we may be picking them up without even knowing it. Here are a few.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization

Never Giving Up

As in life, video games can present many frustrations. There may be a boss whose patterns you’ve figured out but still can’t beat. There may be that one mission in every Call of Duty (for us, it’s that damn Nightmares mode in Black Ops 3) which you beat your head against again and again. But at the end of the day, you never give up and never give in. Even when everything seems lost.

Aka the best news you will read all day.

Of the many JRPGs in today’s world, Game Arts’ Grandia 2 still holds a very special place in the hearts of many veterans. Its story, visuals and amazing battle system all combined to make it one of the best RPGs ever and most certainly one of the best the Dreamcast had to offer. Thanks a survey by GungHo Online Entertainment America for properties from Game Arts, Grandia 2 will be returning in remastered form to Steam.

Fan feedback to the survey was apparently “overwhelming” which influenced the decision for a remastered port. The port will not only have remastered visuals but support mouse/keyboard set-ups and game pads. Steam Achievements and Trading Cards will also be added.

GungHo America president Jun Iwasaki stated that, “With the rise of digital downloads, it is especially important that classic games continue to remain available to play in some form. Grandia II was chosen for a PC re-release because it represents both a hallmark of the Grandia series and an example of how great JRPGs can be.”

What are your thoughts on Grandia 2 heading to Steam? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more information.
