A film based on Gravity Rush was confirmed to be in the works in 2022, with Anna Mastro attached as director.

Sony has made it abundantly clear that it intends to expand the audience for PlayStation’s biggest properties through TV and film adaptations, and sure enough, plans have accelerated with the likes of The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, and Gran Turismo. Beyond that, several other projects are also confirmed to be in development- including, curiously enough, Gravity Rush, a franchise that was never really among Sony’s biggest, and looks unlikely to get a new game instalment at any point in the foreseeable future.

Interestingly enough, at its recent CES 2024 press conference, Sony showcased a few glimpses of the Gravity Rush movie. In a video showcasing its new visualization facility, Torchlight, the company showed off a couple of shots of the film, first showing a female character (who one might presume is Kat, the protagonist of the games) leaping off a skyscraper, with another shot showing her flying downward through the air towards floating island cities that are being attacked by a massive, winged monstrosity. Sandwiched between the two shots was a brief look at behind-the-scenes performance capture work. Take a look below.

Interestingly, the video showcasing Torchlight also showed glimpses of a mystery Patapon project.

Other PlayStation properties that also have adaptations in the works include Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and Gravity Rush, while season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us is also in the works. Meanwhile, writing is also underway for Amazon Prime’s God of War series and Netflix’s Horizon series.

Hair physics can be a tough nut to crack, but these 15 games do a great job of simulating hair and its movements in a realistic fashion.

Hair is one of the toughest body parts to render in any digital medium like animated movies and video games. Hair isn’t a simple texture, but rather an amalgamation of thousands upon thousands of fine strands grouped very closely – and emulating this in a realistic fashion at real-time frame rates can consume exorbitant amounts of computing resources. What’s even more tricky is simulating the movement of these strands, which requires complex physics implementation of its own. Many games fail to hit the mark when it comes to hair physics, but some games do a wonderful job in this regard and this feature will run down 15 such examples

Horizon Forbidden West

Guerrilla Games delivered an excellent sequel with Horizon Forbidden West, a game that corrected almost every criticism with the original all while greatly expanding upon the scope of the original release. Horizon Forbidden West is also a visual powerhouse that presents its gargantuan world with striking attention to detail, and one of the more impressive aspects of that presentation is definitely Aloy’s hair. Sporting dense braided locks, Aloy’s character model has full hair physics for each of these locks that swirl and twirl with each movement. Sure, they are prone to glitching out every now and then which results in some hilarious moments – but by and large, the hair looks and functions in a pretty realistic fashion.

These PS4 titles look good but they can look even better on PS5.

Backwards compatibility for PS4 titles on the PS5 has been an interesting journey thus far. The PS5’s Boost Mode offers performance gains and/or other improvements for existing PS4 titles. On the other hand, some titles will receive dedicated updates that leverage the console’s power in much better ways but there are still plenty of games that are missing out. Let’s take a look at 15 such titles that desperately need these patches.

Bloodborne

It’s been almost six years since the game originally launched but the demand for an official 60 FPS mode in Bloodborne remains strong. 4K resolution support would also be great but it’s the higher frame rate, that too running consistently to combat the frame-pacing issues, that remains unfulfilled. Make it happen Sony. Whether it’s in the rumored PC version or on PS5, just…make it happen already.

They didn't have the best sales or reviews but these action games still stand out.

It’s not easy making an action game. Retaining a player’s interest over the hours is tough enough, forget making an experience that will appeal to as many people as possible. Because of this, a number of titles in the genre tend to fall by the wayside. Let’s take a look at 15 under-appreciated action games throughout the years and what made them so special.

Gravity Rush 2

There’s some insane creativity at SIE Japan Studio, and that’s no more apparent than in Gravity Rush 2. Developed by the Team Gravity division, the world is larger, livelier and more destructible than its predecessor. But it’s the sheer imagination, in gravity-defying encounters to exploring Kat’s mysterious backstory, that lent the game its own unique charm. Despite good reviews and the developer’s pedigree, Gravity Rush 2 averaged roughly 103,000 copies in Japan during its launch month. Its online service was subsequently discontinued in July 2018.

They may not have had the best sales, review scores or exposure but these titles still shine.

Defining an underrated title can be tough, as some games review well without lighting sales charts on fire while others are underappreciated in the critical sense. There are also titles which remain under the radar due to the lack of marketing budgets but survive thanks to word of mouth. Let’s take a look at 15 of these games in the single-player space and what makes them special.

Nex Machina

Housemarque, better known for the arcade shooter Resogun, released an arguably superior follow-up in Nex Machina. The latter is more of a top-down shooter akin to Robotron and Smash TV, and had Eugene Jarvis – who designed both – as a consultant. The result was an intense, action-packed arcade title with heaps of particle effects, great bosses and excellent areas. Unfortunately, Nex Machina and Housemarque’s other arcade title Matterfall reaped so little success that the developer proclaimed the arcade genre dead and focused on more mainstream genres.

Five years later, the PS4 has accumulated an impressive range of titles. Here are the top 30 to play.

Ever since it launched in 2013, the PlayStation 4 has been on a roll. It’s not only shipped over 86 million units but also houses some of the best exclusives out there with some of the best visuals. If you’re keen on hopping aborad the PS4 train, then take a look at 30 of its all-time best titles, from pretty good to outright great.

DriveClub

Evolution Studios’ DriveClub had a pretty rough start with server issues and glitches making a lot of the content inaccessible. Nevertheless, the developer stuck with it, improving the experience, adding more content and branching out into different ideas (like bikes). By now, DriveClub stands as one of the better racing experiences out there, even if it isn’t as hyper-realistic as, say, Gran Turismo Sport.

When rumours came out about CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 being a first-person game, many were sceptical. When it was confirmed, some fans felt outright betrayed and wanted a third-person option to feel that much closer to their character. But if a developer known for primarily third-person experiences can handle a new perspective, then what would other games be like in that regard? Let’s examine 15 games that need the first-person treatment, whether for reals or as twisted experiments.

Tom Clancy’s The Division

Though the essence of Tom Clancy’s The Division is tactical gameplay through the use of cover and abilities, having a first-person perspective would offer some interesting options. The cover system could be implemented in a more nuanced manner, depending on how exposed a player’s POV is (so the longer you have a clear shot, the more accurately enemies could hit you). It would require changes to enemy accuracy, bullet spread, recoil and whatnot but regardless, we could see a first-person loot grinder with more emphasis on cover being interesting. Speaking of which…

Another less popular Sony game has its online services yanked just a few months after launch.

For as great as Sony’s games often are, their strategy of how they handle their online functionality, especially for the less popular titles they puts out, is consistently horrible. Games get their online modes pulled within a few years (if you’re lucky- sometimes it can be just a few months!) after launch, leaving players with a lesser game than what they paid for.

The newest victim of this is Gravity Rush 2, which saw its online functionality be retired yesterday. As of today, you can’t play the game online. The good news here is that the main game story is still entirely playable, and all Trophies are unlockable still- but a very unique and fun part of the game has been rendered unplayable entirely. Gravity Rush 2, as a reminder, launched only a year and a half ago- Sony took down its servers within 18 months of its launch. It’s infuriating, especially since they ask players to pay for online now.

Gravity Rush 2 is still a pretty damn neat game, in spite of the servers going offline, and I encourage you to play it. It’s available only on PS4.

Best PS4 game? You'll never see it coming!

What a year the PS4 has had- it’s as if Sony fired four years of pent up energy all at once, and we got a relentless stream of fantastic games on the system from January all the way until the year’s end. Picking out just one game that stood out over all the others? That was very difficult. But we don’t shy away from difficult tasks, so we did it. Allow us to present to you the nominees for Best PS4 Game of 2017.

NOMINEES

Horizon Zero Dawn:

Freed from the confines of the Killzone franchise, Guerrilla Games spread their wings and delivered Horizon: Zero Dawn, a stunning, memorable open world action RPG in the vein of The Witcher 3 with incredible combat, an amazing story, and some of the best graphics and art we have ever seen. In a year as great as 2017, Horizon is one of the best games we got- that should tell you what an amazing game it was.

Nier Automata:

Platinum Games and Square Enix teamed up to deliver an action RPG unlike any other with Nier Automata, a frankly incredible game that pushes the boundaries of interactive storytelling beyond anything we have seen in the medium, with few exceptions. Throw in a haunting soundtrack, with great gameplay, and an arresting premise, and is it any wonder Nier is as beloved as it is?

Persona 5:

After a nine year long wait, we finally got Persona 5- and it was worth it. Fusing a killer soundtrack, a fantastic story with hugely resonant themes and developments, a fleshed out cast of characters you could’t get but fall in love with, and an overwhelming sense of style, with the same addictive formula that made Persona so popular to begin with, Persona 5 stole everyone’s hearts upon launch, and instantly became the most successful game Atlus has released, ever. Flat out one of the best games of the year, this stands tall as a part of the cream of the crop of the PS4’s offering.

Yakuza 0:

Sega’s Yakuza franchise finally found the success it deserves with Yakuza 0, a game that takes us back to the beginning of Kiryu’s journey, and refines the series’ long running formula to deliver its peak and zenith. If you haven’t played Yakuza 0 already, you’re missing out- it is, without a doubt, one of the best games you will find on the PS4.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy:

In the wake of Uncharted 4 concluding Nathan Drake’s adventures, there were many who wondered where Naughty Dog and Sony’s flagship franchise may go next. The Lost Legacy answers that question, by delivering a high energy, well paced, fun new adventure in the series that reminds us of the spirit of buccaneering swashbuckling that made us fall in love with the franchise to begin with.

Nioh:

After 13 years, Nioh finally released- and it almost justified that wait. An impeccably deep combat system, mixed with the kind of loot drops that have made loot RPGs so popular, and a fusion with the winning Dark Souls formula, all combine to make Nioh the best game Team Ninja has put out since Ninja Gaiden Black, and one of the best PS4 games of all time.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy:

Naughty Dog’s lovable bandicoot returned in a big way this year with the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, a loving remaster of the PS1 platforming classics that so many hold such fond memories and nostalgia for. This remake finally showed us two things- that Crash deserves the fondness that so many read him with, and that, really, a new Crash game would do gangbusters. Get on it Activision!

Gravity Rush 2:

Sony kicked off this year with Gravity Rush 2, and it was a portend of things to come. An utterly fantastic follow up to the PS Vita original, Gravity Rush 2 goes bigger and better in every way, while retaining the strengths of the original and addressing its flaws. A forgotten classic, do play this game if you haven’t already—I guarantee you will find it worth your while.

MLB The Show 17:

Sony San Diego quietly puts out one of the best sports games of the year every year, and this year was no different. Building on the long running franchise’s strengths, and adding new modes and new content to justify veterans returning to it, MLB The Show 17 is a surprisingly compelling proposition, even to those who may not be fans of baseball.

Gran Turismo Sport:

Polyphony Digital decided to do something different with the newest Gran Turismo. Instead of delivering the same game as they always have, but prettier, they delivered a ‘live service’ game that actively ties into FIA events in real life, and lets you engage in them via the video game in a way that has never been done before. This, along with the fact that Sport retains the series’ characteristically strong driving gameplay, makes it an admirable, if flawed, attempt at reinventing a long running franchise.

And the winner is

Horizon: Zero Dawn:

What can we say about Horizon that hasn’t already been said? From the intriguing story and the mystery of the world to the fantastic main character whose journey you want to follow, to the great open world to the thrilling combat with, and say it with me, robot dinosaurs, Guerrilla Games’ action RPG is going to be one for the ages—and years from now, when people talk about the games that defined the PS4, this one will be at the top of everyone’s lists.
