A film based on Gravity Rush was confirmed to be in the works in 2022, with Anna Mastro attached as director.

Sony has made it abundantly clear that it intends to expand the audience for PlayStation’s biggest properties through TV and film adaptations, and sure enough, plans have accelerated with the likes of The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, and Gran Turismo. Beyond that, several other projects are also confirmed to be in development- including, curiously enough, Gravity Rush, a franchise that was never really among Sony’s biggest, and looks unlikely to get a new game instalment at any point in the foreseeable future.

Interestingly enough, at its recent CES 2024 press conference, Sony showcased a few glimpses of the Gravity Rush movie. In a video showcasing its new visualization facility, Torchlight, the company showed off a couple of shots of the film, first showing a female character (who one might presume is Kat, the protagonist of the games) leaping off a skyscraper, with another shot showing her flying downward through the air towards floating island cities that are being attacked by a massive, winged monstrosity. Sandwiched between the two shots was a brief look at behind-the-scenes performance capture work. Take a look below.

Interestingly, the video showcasing Torchlight also showed glimpses of a mystery Patapon project.

Other PlayStation properties that also have adaptations in the works include Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and Gravity Rush, while season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us is also in the works. Meanwhile, writing is also underway for Amazon Prime’s God of War series and Netflix’s Horizon series.

Even if they've laid dormant for a long time or were known for their massive scale, these franchises could work as more condensed games.

While the triple-A games industry still very much cares about bigger games that last hundreds of hours, it’s also warming up to the idea of shorter experiences. Whether they’re standalone follow-ups expanding on established titles or just small but dense titles, there are several franchises out there which could do with the same treatment. Let’s look at 15 of them here.

Deus Ex

It may sound counter-intuitive considering the scope of Mankind Divided and Human Revolution, but Deus Ex has always thrived on the number of choices it gives players. The different play styles, dialogues and approaches would fit well within the context of a tighter narrative and maybe encourage multiple playthroughs. As for what kind of story it would tell, given all the factions, conspiracies and whatnot, and whether it should feature Adam Jensen or a brand new character remains to be seen.

Gravity Rush has a few more months of online to enjoy.

Following a massive fan push to keep Sony Computer Entertainment from sunsetting the servers for the recent adventure title, Gravity Rush 2, the fans have been vindicated, at least for awhile. The #DontForgetGravityRush campaign saw as many as 20,000 new users check out the title with many more returning to the game.

The title’s online features were originally set to conclude on January 19th, but the movement has convinced Sony to push that back 7 months to now conclude on July 18, or 19th depending on your time zone. The online functions of the game are not critical to the title, mostly offering subtle bonuses such as costumes and community ghosts, and none of the trophies demand interaction with it, so when the servers do shut down, we’re still losing content, which is unfortunate, but the game as a whole will not be crippled.

Sony intends to sunset support for several older titles this year as well, including EyePet, EyePet Move Edition, Eyepet & Friends, Killzone 2, Killzone 3, WipEout HD, WipEout HD Fury, and WipEout 2048.

Bigger aspirations.

Gravity Rush 2 is almost here- the title has performed very well critically, but whether or not it is a commercial success remains to be seen. Regardless of if it is, however, it looks like director Keiichiro Toyama, previously known for his work on Silent Hill and Siren, is already looking ahead to his new project.

His new game, whatever it is, will not be a Gravity Rush sequel, however. Speaking to Famitsu (translated by BlackKite on Twitter), Toyama said that his next game will be something completely new, and that it might end up being something completely different from Gravity Rush. But Gravity Rush fans should not lose hope either, as it sounds like Toyama isn’t done with the franchise- he expressed his desire with the sequel, stating that he is looking at expressing things with the next game that can only be expressed on a new console- which seems to be an indication that if a Gravity Rush 3 were to come, it would come on PS5.

Gravity Rush 2, meanwhile, launches on PS4 later this month.

Looks gorgeous.

Gravity Rush Remastered, the PS4 upport of the PS Vita cult classic, is out already in Hong Kong (and in English too!) although it doesn’t launch in the west until early next year. If you are curious to see how the game looks and performs on the PS4, consider this your lucky day- we have brand new footage for the game that shows off over 20 minutes of gameplay.

I think the game translates well to the PS4, at least visually- which may have quite a bit to do with just how gorgeous the game’s artstyle is. My hope is that Sony also takes this opportunity to patch up the original game’s substantial and numerous gameplay issues.

Gravity Rush 2 is also in development. Unfortunately, it will be launching exclusively on the PlayStation 4, meaning Vita owners are out of luck on that one. Still, hopefully the series can come into its own and achieve the kind of success it otherwise never could on the PS Vita.

Another Vita exclusive jumps the ship.

With each passing day, there remain less and less reasons to buy a Vita- everything that is good on it is either already available on some other platform (more often than not, that other platform plays it better), or gets announced for some other platform.

The latest addition to that long (and growing) list? Gravity Rush. One of the most original and high quality Vita exclusive games released for the system so far, the game was marked for its unique premise, its interesting gameplay mechanics, and its striking art style. And though it did suffer from issues- an atrocious camera, repetition, and a lack of depth to the gameplay, it still remains a flag bearer for the Vita’s beleaguered library.

Well, that may be about to end soon- the Korean software rating board, which has been a reliable source of leaks in the past, has just rated Gravity Rush for the PS4. This means the game is jumping ship to Sony’s console. On the one hand, that’s a good thing- it gets exposed to a larger audience. On the other, it reaffirms that Sony has no more sh*ts to give about the Vita.

Seriously, is there any reason to own it any more? I am just waiting for the inevitable Uncharted: Golden Abyss PS4 port, as well as the digital PS4 remaster of WipEout 2048.

We still don't know its name or what system it is for, however.

Gravity Rush may have been heavily flawed, but it was still a great game, and stands as one of the highlight experiences of the PlayStation Vita. A lot of people, who loved Kat’s first outing, have been clamoring for a sequel, and the teaser unveiled over a year ago, which showed her in an unnamed new game for an unspecified platform, got a lot of people excited.

Unfortunately, we have not seen or heard anything of the game since then, and given the tendency for games on Sony systems to just disappear into oblivion after initial announcement, a lot of people had started to get worried. Particularly given that the game still has no name or even a target platform.

The director of the game recently made a statement that should quell at least some of those worries.

“The team is preparing and the systems are being put in place for the next title, and things are going smoothly. 2014 seems to be a year that will be dedicated to production in earnest, but I’ll work hard to meet everyone’s expectations.”

Alright, that sounds good. We’ll be waiting for more!

Launching this autumn.

In Europe, Sony actually cares about the PlayStation Vita a little more than they do over here in the States. So, from time to time, we see some surprising moves on their part to sell the system- which is, again, more than can be said of SCEA, who seem content to let the system languish and die.

Anyway, SCEE, on the other hand, just announced a new PS Vita Mega Pack, this one themed with adventure games. And it seems like a hell of a deal, packing, as it will, five exceptionally good games.

Here are the games that the Mega Pack will have:

Uncharted: Golden Abyss

Tearaway

Gravity Rush

Escape Plan

TxK

The Mega Pack can be purchased in two ways:

A memory card bundle comes with an 8GB memory card and a PlayStation Store voucher code to download all five games.

The PS Vita + memory card bundle also includes an 8GB memory card and a voucher code for all five games, as well as a PlayStation Vita system to play them on.

The first bundle will set you back only by €39.99 RRP- that’s the cost of one full price game, but instead you get five- while the bundle with the system included is €199.99RRP, or the price of the system itself. Essentially, you get five games free.

Holy shit, Sony. Advertise the hell out of this thing.

Sequel to last year's excellent Vita game teased.

Gravity Rush was one of the most striking, unique, and memorable experiences on the PlayStation Vita when it released last year, in spite of all its problems (and it had a fair few). The title is arguably Sony’s marquee effort for its portable, and was a great example of the unbridled creativity that Sony’s Japan Studio can often exhibit.

This year at their TGS keynote, Sony teased a new game in the franchise- a sequel to the first game. Check out the teaser above for yourself.

If Gravity Rush 2 can fix all that was wrong with the first game while also simultaneously maintaining the feeling of freshness of the original title by introducing new mechanics, it should be a hell of a game to look out for, and along with the original, might provide players with one of the best reasons to buy into Sony’s portable ecosystem. That is, of course, assuming that it is a PS Vita exclusive, and not a PS4/PS4-Vita multiplat game.

We’ll keep an eye out on this and let you know more about it as and when we learn it.

The Vita is a great piece of hardware that has some pretty good games for it, but it's going to need even more to compete moving forward in the new generation.

Sony’s PlayStation Vita is a pretty impressive piece of hardware with a small, but good selection of games. On top of it, this little handheld powerhouse does way more than simply play games too. It’s a true, portable multimedia device that allows gamers to do anything from listen to music, surf the web and even watch Netflix anywhere they are.

Really, the only thing you can’t do with it is make a phone call, which probably doesn’t phase the owners of this device. What the PS Vita needs at this point are more games. While there are some good one’s available now, it’s not enough to really carry the PS Vita into the future. With the option to be able to pair this puppy with Sony’s PS4, there has to be more in store for the device. It deserves more than just being a vestigial extension to Sony’s soon to be released console.

1. God of War:

The God of War series has always done well with Sony’s fans, regardless of it being released on handhelds or consoles. It’s the franchise that most of us picked up our first PlayStation console to begin with.

A new God of War game may help to pull some gamers back to the PS Vita. There has already been an announcement for God of War one and two being released for the Vita, but most have already played those games. It would be great to see them in all their remastered glory, but a new game with updated graphics, new characters and most importantly a new story should do the trick.
