Remember when Hideo Kojima attempted to tease us last year with the absence of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain during Metal Gear Solid’s 25 Anniversary event last year? One of the things showcased instead was a new social game, titled Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops, which would be made available for the GREE mobile platform in Japan. Now, it seems that the game will be shutting down on December 13th, a little more than a year after it first launched.

Konami has announced the same just recently and considering that it launched on December 4th 2012, it hasn’t had a bad run. The game incorporated aspects such as boss fights, 3D graphics and real time sneaking despite featuring aspects of a collectible card game. For whatever reason though, the game just wasn’t successful enough.

What are your thoughts on Social Ops being shut down? Is it a big loss or should Kojima Productions focus on bigger and better things? Let us know below.

According to Anil Dharni, the iPad played a big role in catalyzing mobile gaming growth.

Senior Vice President of Stdio Operations at GREE Anil Dharni stated that compared to a year ago, lucrative mobile developers are now earning four times as much – and maybe even more.

Speaking to TechCrunch, he stated that, “It’s 4X and beyond in terms of revenue [compared to a year ago].”

And though he credits the iPad for helping to proliferate the growth in the mobile gaming industry – since many popular franchises like Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Infinity Blade and more started out as iOS titles – Dharni is of the belief that Android would “grow faster this year”.

But enough to overtake Apple? That remains to be seen.

Of course the big question is whether mobile developers really are raking it in. This is an industry which, despite the millions of downloads, has seen its fair share of failures and ideas that never really took off. All of this is still relevant today – but it further reminds us that like console gaming industry, those at the top often stay at the top.

The stealth/social GREE game saw a strong launch.

Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops, a social game that Kojima Productions announced during it’s 25th Anniversary event for Metal Gear – also known as, “Where the hell is MGS5?! Argh!” – and which was developed for Japan’s mobile GREE platform saw a pretty good round of downloads when it launched.

The game has been downloaded over 100,000 times. And since its announcement, both Android and iPhone users can play it as well.

The celebrate the success of the game, Konami is giving away a ton of gifts to players. For those with a level 10 or higher character, you’ll receive 2000 bond points, while Level 15 players get two BP rations and level 20+ players receive premium gacha ticket.

MGS: Social Ops is a pretty odd game. It features settings and characters from MGS3, MGS4 and MGS: Peace Walker, but plays very much like the portable Metal Gear Acid series wherein you move characters and utilize items via cards. Check it out below.

Square-Enix's GREE based social game mixes in elements of the real world.

Some one at Square-Enix must have finally wizened up. Not only did we get an adaptation of The World Ends With You for iPad (dubbed “Solo Remix”) but a new GREE game, which will be coming to Android and iOS sooner, has also been announced. More details coming out indicate that the game will incorporate team play more than anything, as a team of 20 players will work together to outscore another team of 20 players by defeating Noise Leaders and racking up the scores. This weekly Reaper Game is only one of the more dynamic parts about the game.

Thankfully, the control scheme will be very much like the Nintendo DS game with players tapping and sliding across the screen, after selecting different pins, to unleash powerful attacks when combating Noise. To cash in on the F2P craze, you’ll be able to obtain more pins by either collecting them within the game or buying compugacha tickets with real money/ A navigator named Koko Atarashi has also been put into place to assist players.

Not the full-blown sequel we expected, but it’s a step in the right direction for quality games from Square-Enix.

Let the Final Fantasy madness begin. If you were a fan of Dissidia, and its sequel, with several villains and heroes coming together to beat the tar out of each other, then good news from Square-Enix.

Final Fantasy X GREE has been announced for the social platform, and will feature characters, enemies, and even summons from a lot (and we mean, a LOT) of Final Fantasy games. You’ll also be able to view event scenes from all of the games, in case you get all misty-eyed and nostalgic.

Now, which Final Fantasy games are being included? Check it out. Final Fantasy I, II, III, IV, IV: The Complete Collection, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XI, XII, XIII, XIII-2 , Dissidia Final Fantasy, Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Advance, The War of the Lions, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Final Fantasy Type 0, and finally, Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates.

Hell yes? Hell yes.

The GREE menace spreads on, as its popular (seriously, are all games for the platform popular?) free-to-play mobile social game Dino Life is now available on the App Store. That means it’s fair game for anyone with an iPhone, iPod and iTouch.

Dino Life is described as a chance “to step into a prehistoric world where dinosaurs and cavemen live in peaceful harmony. Players collect and nurture adorable dinos, while building and decorating their village to create a thriving Stone Age tribe. With the ability to crossbreed dinosaurs, players will delight in hatching unique new varieties of offspring. In the game, players can also visit friends’ tribes, collect resources from friends, and send gifts” (according to the PR release, anyway).

Some of the game’s features include:

● Collecting and nurturing 60+ dinos
● Cross-breeding dinos for new species of genetic horror
● Progressing through quests for building your own personal prehistoric storyline
● Building and decorating a caveman village
● Visiting friends’ tribes, collecting and trading resources, and sending gifts
● Unlocking rare animals and prehistoric treasures

It’s like the Flintstones. Actually, it sounds exactly like the Flintstones. Huh.

Did you think Metal Gear: Social Ops was the only GREE-centric game Konami was hiding? Apparently not, as the company announced Dragon Collection for GREE on iOS devices in North America this Fall. Believe it or not, it’s actually an award-winning mobile social game, besides being one of the biggest card battling games in Japan with 6.5 million+ domestic registered users

Tomoyuki Tsuboi, President of Konami Digital Entertainment stated, “We are pleased to introduce the popular Dragon Collection to the North American market, exemplifying our dedication to providing engaging experiences to the rapidly expanding social and mobile platforms, including the newly announced GREE platform.”

Dragon Collection is essentially Pokemon but with Dragon Cards (or Yu-Gi-Oh, more or less). Game modes include Quest (players explore the Dragon World), Battle (players battle villains and rival players), Gacha (players compete for a random prize), and Fusion (players strengthen by merging favorite monsters). Dragon Collection also has in-game events and campaigns that evolve based on user’s requests and opinions. And lest you think this is just a straight-up port with the core gameplay modes intact, there will be new monsters specifically for the North American version of the game.

Check it out on the App Store when it releases this Fall.

Though most remember it as part of an elaborate troll job by Hideo Kojima, Konami and Kojima Productions, Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops is an actual game. It’s coming soon for Japan’s GREE social networking platform, and a new movie has been released showcasing the gameplay elements. And that’s all we’ve got so far.

From what the trailer shows, Social Ops appears to be part turn-based strategy, part tactical stealth, part collectible card game and part “huh?”. It brings Metal Gear Acid to mind, which wouldn’t be bad. Who thinks it’ll catch on?

GREE has announced its lineup and stage schedule for the upcoming TGS for this year (September 20th- September 23rd).

They will be talking about social gaming during their keynote presentation and announce a new game that’s been in development.

GREE’s exhibit this year, which includes more than 30 titles, is themed on the evolution of social gaming. The increasing technological sophistication of smartphones has driven the diversification of social games across a wide variety of genres, as well as the emergence of new genres, such as action RPGs and third-party shooters, that were once only possible on gaming consoles. The GREE booth will feature playable demos of social games in a range of genres, from GREE’s own in-house games to games by third-party developers. Details of the game lineup are provided below.

The schedules and lineups are given below:

What Metal Gear Solid 5?

Kojima Productions recently announced a new Metal Gear Solid at the MGS 25th Anniversary Meet. But not really. The new “game” has been tailored for Japan’s leading mobile GREE platform and is being called Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops.

That’s right. A Metal Gear Solid social networking game. Created with Unity, it sports some pretty impressive graphics for a game both running on mobiles and utilising that engine.

No word yet on whether this will be coming to other mobile platforms like Android or iOS of even Windows Phone. You know, the very devices that a large amount of the world’s population own?

It’s also been confirmed that the game will be playable at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. Now don’t jump too high in your excitement, you might just hit the fan.

The first question on everyone’s minds is obviously concerning whether Kojima is trolling the internet but we’ll wait till the events ends before deciding on that.

Special thanks to NeoGAF for the live coverage.
