Zulu and Makva from the Freedom and Duty factions accompany Skif through the expansion's new zones, which arrive this Summer.

GSC Game World’s first expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is still due this Summer, and even without a concrete release date, a new trailer offers a sneak peek into the locations and characters you’ll meet. Say hello to the “root of all evil” in The Zone, and the unsteady companions along for the ride in Cost of Hope.

Zulu and Makva accompany Skif on his journey through the new regions, including what appears to be the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The former is part of Duty and seemingly has a “beast” inside of him, while the latter, a Freedom member, is “looking for something” but “can’t find it.” At the very least, they seem capable of cooperation, however short-lived it may end up being.

As for the various new areas, there’s the ruins of a power station with Anomalies visible; a spooky park with dried-up trees; and even a room where gravity is playing tricks on the player. There’s also a masked figure with a hefty amount of equipment who knocks Skif out.

Regardless, it seems that Cost of Hope will follow the base game’s cue and see you choosing sides. Does that mean forsaking one side in favor of the other? What is the meaning behind “Change always requires sacrifice, but such is the price of freedom?”

Hopefully, we’ll find out sooner rather than later as the expansion nears release. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC – you can check out our review of the PlayStation version here.

Developer GSC Game World promises something "far more significant" than knowledge and gear awaits in the infamous laboratory.

Before you discover the Cost of Hope, it’s back to X-18 Lab in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, courtesy of the new Sealed Truth update. It adds a new quest where Slag Heap’s Diod asks the player to retrieve something from the lower levels.

If you’ll recall, the base game didn’t fully open up the sinister laboratory like Shadow of Chornobyl. As such, it’s lain dormant all this time, or at least it seems so. Regardless, your task for this “high-risk, high-reward” mission is to get in and find out what’s what. While that may include “lost knowledge” and “useful gear” – no word on whether anything new has been added – it seems that “something far more significant” also awaits.

Interestingly, GSC Game World says the update is a “thank you” to “the community for staying with the Zone.” It could be hiding a highly requested addition or a callback to previous games. Time will tell, so get cracking.

Otherwise, don’t expect too much in terms of fixes. Patch notes on Steam note a fix for an excess of strong mutants in long campaigns. The “Dark as a Dungeon” mission should no longer cancel if you’ve hit a critical point in the story (read: the point where you can’t go back and finish other missions), and there are also new loading screens.

As for Cost of Hope, it launches this Summer for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. While pricing remains to be announced, it adds two new regions, a storyline spanning dozens of hours, several new quests, and more.

"And who knows what's hiding there in the darkness…" says GSC Game World as it seemingly preps for Cost of Hope's launch.

The first paid DLC for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is out in the coming months, but GSC Game World has plenty more in store for players. That includes a new content update in April called Sealed Truth, which opens the door to X-18 Lab. “And who knows what’s hiding there in the darkness…” teases the developer.

Of course, fans of Shadow of Chornobyl will recognize the location, though it was called Lab X-18. It served as a testing bed for psychic radiation on various subjects and also designed the Brain Scorcher, a giant radar dish used for mind alteration. If that wasn’t enough, powerful Anomalies can also be discovered. While you can explore parts of it in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, GSC Game World will seemingly reveal much more than players bargained for.

The real question is whether this sets up the events of Cost of Hope, where players explore the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Iron Forest. It promises a new storyline that’s “dozens of hours” long, offering “dozens of smaller locations,” various quests, and even a new hub to explore.

While the DLC doesn’t have a concrete release date, it is available this Summer for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC players. Stay tuned for more details on Sealed Truth in the meantime, and check out our review of the base game on PS5.

In development even before the base game, Cost of Hope also includes the Iron Forest and Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant as new regions.

GSC Game World has finally revealed the first of two major post-launch expansions coming to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl – Cost of Hope. Launching this Summer, it’s billed as a massive experience with a new story that takes “dozens of hours,” even if you’re not seeing everything.

Skif is once again the star, and he’ll receive a call during the campaign that kickstarts the new storyline. This involves venturing to two new regions – the Iron Forest and the now-mythical Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. They each have a dedicated hub, “dozens of smaller locations,” and numerous quests.

The Duty and Freedom factions also play a part, and while they’re bound by the D4 Treaty, the latest trailer reveals that it may be in shambles. While the former is opposed to the Zone, the latter wants to embrace and utilize it. Of course, whatever decisions you make will reverberate through the expansion, including its ending and what greater consequences it has on the Zone.

Somehow in development even before the base game, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope’s events run parallel to the base game’s story. It also supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so you can buy it once on PC or Xbox Series X/S and play on all associated platforms. More details will be revealed in the future, so stay tuned.

After receiving an emergency broadcast from Professor Medulin, players can venture to the Red Forest for hours of new story content.

GSC Game World dropped a pretty sizable update for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl last month to celebrate its PS5 release, but it’s far from one. Tomorrow, it’s adding a new story with eight quests offering hours of new content spread across seven new locations. Check out the trailer for “Stories Untold” below.

The story follows Malachite and a mysterious signal that causes Stalkers to suffer hallucinations, headaches and other such trauma. While Banzi assists Professor Medulin in his investigation, things take a turn, and they require help. You’ll receive their transmission while wandering the Zone and can proceed to the Red Forest Region to learn more.

Of course, there’s also a new hub to visit in the Burnt Forest, complete with a trader, guide, and more. Other new characters abound throughout, but you also get a new weapon – the GP37V2. As the name implies, it’s based on the GP37 with a suppressor, single and burst fire modes, and more, though you can modify it accordingly.

GSC Game World's survival shooter might not have been at its best last year, but things have changed since then. Is STALKER 2 finally the experience we waited so many years for?

The fact that STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl had a bad start when it was released last year is kind of old news at this point. The A-Life system caused more problems than the thrills it was meant to bring, while bugs, glitches, and performance issues marred what should have been a very rewarding experience.

However, developer GSC’s struggles to get the game to its final release were well-documented, earning the studio some goodwill which it has worked hard to retain with seven major patches to its flagship title and a PS5 port that brings some great exclusive additions to the game.

We’ve previously commented on how the first five patches felt like an evolution of the game into a version of itself that not only looked to fix problems, but also improve strengths. Another two updates have since arrived, bringing their own special additions to The Zone. Which begs the question: Is STALKER 2 finally fixed and complete?

Join us and find out!

Unlocking the Night

Things could get very dark in The Zone once the sun sets, and exploring at night was quite a sore point in the game. That was until the Night of the Hunter Update that dropped in September 2025, bringing fixes and improvements while giving players a very valuable tool to aid their nighttime strolls.

The Night Vision Goggles gave any aspiring STALKER the ability to see better at night and even use their weapons quite effectively, thanks to an attached laser pointer and an aiming offset feature that’s quite helpful when you have it running. What’s more, the quest to acquire them sent you back to one of the cast’s more memorable characters.

But the mere addition of the NVGs alone isn’t how GSC managed to make this update count. It was the manner in which they addressed a problem with the world’s design while also bringing an important layer of immersion to the gameplay loop on offer. That’s because going out at night meant more ways to engage with The Zone and its A-Life system, a potent combination made even more unpredictable by the darkness and its dangers.

It’s the perfect showcase of how GSC managed to up the ante with its updates, adding content that brings meaningful innovations to the core experience on offer in STALKER 2. If you thought hunting at night was going to give you an advantage, the fact that other Stalkers could be using night vision to hunt you down should be a good enough reason to be as cautious as you can if you do step out into the Zone’s shadows.

But again, The Zone is meant to be dangerous and not conducive to casual strolls. The Night Vision Goggles only ensure that you’re not tripping over your own feet in the dark. They were a clever way to expand a dangerous playing field by giving it an entirely different and explorable time of day with one simple change.

Should GSC have delayed STALKER 2 a little more and brought all of the features it has added since the game’s release to the table in one go? Perhaps yes, but STALKER 2’s troubled development cycle might not have been entirely under the studio’s control. However, in the year that has passed, has it done enough to bring the game up to scratch? Certainly yes!

The Expedition update is the one that has brought STALKER 2 very close to its final form, and done so with style.

The Definitive STALKER Experience

The seventh major update to STALKER 2, the Expedition update, brought several noteworthy additions to the game. But there was a crucial difference this time around. The new update brought more new content to the game alongside a few fixes, a showcase that STALKER 2 is now as close as it can be to the original vision that GSC had for it.

Let’s start with the titular expeditions. It brings changes to the exploration loop that add a layer of authenticity to exploring The Zone, in our honest opinion. By relegating saving to camps that you need to visit, along with the ability to get a good grip on what the newly added Master difficulty setting would bring on an easier mode, it’s the perfect excuse for a new playthrough with all of the bells and whistles from previous updates.

However, Expedition mode is not the only brilliant addition to the game. There’s also the fact that improved stealth is now an option when you’re out in the Zone, a change that has been very welcome among critics and players alike. GSC hasn’t reinvented the wheel here, merely nerfing your enemies’ ability to see you when you use tall grass or dense vegetation to hide your approach.

Many have since commented that taking enemies on in environments like the swamps or corn fields, where it felt unfair for enemies to fire bullets right into you, despite not being able to see you. It was quite jarring and ruined the immersion, while also serving as an annoying reminder that not everything in The Zone worked as intended.

But now, hunting and well, stalking, your enemies from the shadows is a viable playstyle, allowing players to bring a layer of tactical strategy to the table. It’s a change that was definitely warranted, and GSC’s execution in this regard must be commended. It’s one of the details that’s going to make STALKER 2 feel like a very different game from the one that we played last year. And there’s more.

The A-Life system had its lows, but the January 2025 update did a lot to make The Zone work almost independently of the player. It’s made survival in its post-apocalyptic world quite a challenge every time you venture out, but it’s also a great way to make every time you leave the safety of a hideout as unpredictable as you could possibly want.

However, even as it brought a great version of the game to the PS5, GSC has managed to bring a major change to the A-Life system that could make the game’s open world a very different place. That’s because the many factions vying for control over their little pockets of it will now be in active conflict with each other.

That means the place you just left might not be the place you return to a while later if the faction controlling it failed to defend it from its invaders. The mutants are a major part of the chaos, defending their nests with territorial ferocity. GSC effectively made The Zone a living, breathing entity that’s utterly apathetic to the life within its confines, while its causality sets events in motion whether you’re ready for them or not.

It’s almost like the A-Life system feels complete after its January 2025 revival, and now makes every minute in The Zone feel like things could go in an entirely different direction than what you’re expecting in a matter of moments. It’s a great way to finally achieve a hallmark of some of the best open worlds out there, and a testament to GSC’s commitment to rewarding its players for their support and loyalty over a few troubled years.

Of course, the addition of more anomalies after the fire-based one in the Night Hunter update, along with little details like a tremor affecting your aim after too many energy drinks, and further balancing of the sprint and stamina systems to make the entire experience more authentic and immersive, have also helped. STALKER 2 finally feels like the game it was always meant to be.

Taking Things Further

Of course, all of these fixes and additions might have been more than sufficient to draw new players to the game’s recently released PS5 version. It was a section of STALKER 2’s audience that watched from the sidelines as GSC brought the game back to life from the jaws of obscurity.

But by utilizing the DualSense’s unique feature set, GSC has managed to make each weapon feel distinct thanks to the adaptive triggers, while the controller’s haptics are being put to good use to make each distinct surface and terrain in The Zone stick out. The in-built speaker handles all of your radio communications, while the visuals (especially on the PS5 Pro) shine through.

It’s all a showcase of the effort that GSC has put into bringing STALKER 2 up to scratch. But in the process, it feels like the game is now even more than what it could have been last year. We’d say that this survival shooter is more than merely fixed.

It’s gone beyond mere repairs to make a few modifications that have made its journey more than just a redemption arc. It’s now a success story and a beacon for other titles that do not perform well when they are launched but manage to turn things around in the aftermath.

STALKER 2 now joins the likes of titles like No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 as a redemption story worth knowing, and is now a game that we’d recommend diving into, irrespective of whether you played it before or are an absolute newbie to the franchise.

In a recent interview, the developers behind S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 also confirmed the performance and resolution targets for the PS5.

With the PS5 release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, developer GSC Game World has revealed quite a few details about the upcoming console release. In an interview with WCCFTech, communications director Zakhar Bocharov and technical director Ievgen Kulyk have confirmed that the PS5 Pro version of the open-world shooter targets graphical settings similar to the PC version’s High preset.

While noting that optimising a game for consoles is an entirely different beast than doing so for PC, Bocharov noted that the PS5 Pro version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl isn’t quite 100 percent the same as the PC version’s High settings. Rather, the console release is “leaning towards” the preset.

“Console optimization is a bit more complex and specific than just porting over PC presets,” said Bocharov. “It’s hard to answer the question 100% precisely, but the PS5 Pro version is definitely leaning towards PC High settings. I think comparison videos between platforms are just a matter of time, so you’ll be able to form your own opinion.”

Kulyk also provided more comprehensive details about the kind of resolution and performance targets that the studio is aiming for across the PS5 and PS5 Pro versions of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. He noted that the base PS5 runs the title at 2K / 60 FPS in performance mode, while quality mode aims for 4K / 30 FPS. The PS5 Pro, on the other hand, targets 4K / 60 FPS in performance mode, and 4K / 30 FPS with a higher level of detail in the quality mode. “We don’t use PSSR — only UE5-integrated TSR,” he explained.

Elsewhere in the interview, Bocharov also reflected on the full year since the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl on PC and Xbox Series X/S, and how the title has seen quite a bit of success as well as post-launch support in the form of seven major updates and a host of smaller ones focused on new content and performance improvements. He also noted that the studio plans to keep working on the title for the time being.

“We’ll strive to be as objective as possible,” said Bocharov of GSC Game World’s take on the success of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. “One million copies sold in under three days and several million players through Game Pass on PC and Xbox can undoubtedly be considered successful figures. Over the year, the game received 7 major updates — and far more smaller ones — which not only improved performance but also added new content.

“The game is now significantly different from what it was at launch. Updates are a complex matter. In the world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., they could probably go on forever, much like the pursuit of perfection. Nevertheless, they will continue forward on.”

Earlier today, the studio had also taken to social media to thank Xbox for all the support it had provided for the studio during the title’s first year out. In the post, the developers also noted that, while the game might be coming down from Game Pass, the relationship between GSC Game World and Xbox will remain strong.

GSC Game World noted that the presence of Xbox's "hand of support" could be felt "even in the darkest moments" faced by the studio.

Celebrating the PS5 release of open-world atmospheric shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, developer GSC Game World has taken to social media to thank Microsoft’s Xbox team for its support as well. In its post, the developer noted that Xbox showed “heartfelt care and amazing professionalism” towards the project, and that the company’s support was felt “even in the darkest moments”.

“This one started with a single email and grew into one of the most glowing partnerships we’ve ever had,” wrote GSC Game World on social media. “A match happened that ultimately made millions of players happy.”

“We’ve said this many times, but we are genuinely grateful to the Xbox team for all the collaboration, incredible showcases, heartfelt care, and amazing professionalism. Your hand of support could always be felt, even in the darkest moments. Together, we gave players an unforgettable experience. We are sincerely proud of what we’ve achieved together. This road without you would have been, at the very least, completely different.”

The developer went on to note that, while S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl might be leaving the Game Pass service, the friendship between it and Xbox “will only continue.” This also means that the studio might get further support from Xbox when it comes to making more content for the game, including potential future story DLCs, new stories, and new experiences.

“S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is leaving Game Pass, but our shared journey and friendship will only continue,” wrote the studio. “There’s a lot ahead in our universe, which now includes our new stalkers who discovered the Zone over the year. The world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. awaits new stories and experiences, story DLCs, and many surprises that we’re already preparing.”

Earlier this week, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl got a major new update on PC and Xbox Series X/S which introduced the new Master Difficulty mode to the game. The new difficulty option can only be picked when starting a fresh playthrough of the campaign. Along with this, the update also brought with it Expedition Mode, which adds stricter rules for when you can save your progress – only when exiting.

Other features of the update include changes to how stamina and sprinting work, as well as a new Immersive Mode – a quick way to hide the in-game HUD to grab nice-looking screenshots.

While S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has been available across PC and Xbox Series X/S since the title first came out in November 2024. While the PS5 version – out later today – will likely bring an even larger number of players to the open-world survival shooter, for those of you that are still curious about the new console release, check out the trailer showcasing gameplay.
What is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and Why Should You Care?

As the latest title in the cult classic S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s very existence has been tumultuous, to say the least. Announced in 2010, cancelled in 2012 (with the developer dissolving in 2011), revived in 2018, first gameplay in 2021, and numerous delays to follow due to real-life tragedy – yet the developer persevered and finally released Heart of Chornobyl in 2025.

So why should you care about it? Because the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is a post-apocalyptic sandbox experience of unpredictability, where an ordinary quest could break down into countless unforgettable encounters. It’s realistic and punishing, but discovering new things, be it Mutants devouring human corpses, Anomalies warping the very fabric of reality, or just the gorgeous radiation-soaked landscape of the Exclusion Zone.

Walk Through the Zone

How does a typical day in the Zone unfold? Well, that’s up to you. After selecting which armor, weapons, and items are needed, you’ll venture out and explore. There are quests to track and different vendors to interact with. Other S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s roam the Zone, who can either be friendly or hostile. Avoiding radiation sickness is as important as managing your hunger and getting enough sleep. Maybe you’ll get lucky and find some Artifacts that you can sell. Then again, you may also run into…

Anomalous Behavior

Imagine walking around and suddenly being thrown back, losing a hefty amount of health in the process. If you weren’t paying attention, the shiny spheres that were responsible may have escaped notice. These are one of several Anomalies present through the Zone – unexplained phenomena with different effects. Acid pools, electric orbs, fire jets – these are the most obvious ones, but even seemingly harmless things like bubbles could burst and poison you. You’ll learn to identify each Anomaly, perhaps throwing some bolts around to sense their presence or disrupt them, and maybe even use them against any hostiles.

Factions

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has plenty of threats. Bandits wander around, eager to start trouble; Loners are other S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s, which gives more leeway in dealing with them; various military groups like the Corps, Duty, and Freedom; and more. Several factions differ wildly in terms of ideals, so depending on who you side with, there will be different outcomes (and consequences).

Mutants

You’ll also have to contend with Mutants – monstrosities with different abilities and a unified desire to see you dead. There are the Bloodsuckers, capable of turning invisible and inflicting bleed; Poltergeists, also invisible and who throw environmental objects; mutated versions of boars, rodents, and dogs; and perhaps most terrifying, the Bayun, who can mimic human sounds. Dealing with them can become a huge hassle, but it’s yet another component to surviving in the Zone.

Weapons, New and Old

Thankfully, there’s an extensive range of weapons available to help with that. AKs, ARs, sniper rifles, pistols, SMGs, gauss guns, shotguns, explosives – take your pick, with tons of mods available to tune their performance. New weapons have also been added since launch, including the unique Honta’s “Dahunka”, the Night Stalker pistol, the Three Line Rifle, and the Kora 1911 pistol.

NVGs and Stealth Improvements

The Night Stalker isn’t the only tool for facilitating stealthier players. The latest update also added four types of Night Vision Goggles, allowing you to prowl through the darkness. Couple that with the fact that enemy AI has been improved – meaning fewer chances of being detected immediately – and it makes a stealthier approach far more viable than at launch.

The Zone’s Size

64 square kilometers. 20 different regions. A seamless interconnected map that’s almost completely open from the outset, limited only by your survival skills (and smarts). The Zone is a world unto itself, seemingly existing outside of normal space, with its own ecosystem and ecology. Knowing that balance and how various elements play off of each other is the key to survival, as is understanding arguably the biggest appeal of the series: A-Life.

A-Life 2.0

A-Life has been a staple of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. since Shadow of Chornobyl and contributed hugely to their replay value. It essentially simulates all AI in the Zone independent of the player, though the system further breaks down into everything that you see in proximity versus whatever is happening in the background. With S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, GSC Game World took it to the next level with A-Life 2.0, a system where “countless events and encounters” would happen. There’s only one problem: It didn’t work at launch, to the point where players found the marketing to be highly misleading.

Fortunately, through multiplayer updates, the development team has fully implemented A-Life 2.0. Hostile NPCs will actually initiate battles to capture more territory and fend off mutants, and there’s far more variety in the types of groups encountered. It all contributes to making the Zone feel more alive and interesting.

Upcoming Features

Even with all these features for day one PS5 players, what about those who come after? Fortunately, GSC Game World has an ongoing roadmap with further updates to the UI, new missions, and an extended day/night cycle. Some of those are live now, including Master Difficulty, Expedition Mode (where you can only save at certain points), and much more.

Multiple Endings and Playtime

As you’ve probably guessed from the existence of multiple factions, there are different endings to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s story. We won’t spoil any of them, but reaching them will require about 36 hours for the story alone on average, according to HowLongToBeat. Pursuing side activities bumps that up to about 70 hours, while completing everything could mean over 130 hours of gameplay. Whatever your commitment level may be, it’s a long, arduous journey.

Performance Improvements Since Launch

The first day of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s launch was all over the place in terms of performance, even with a massive day-one patch. Things have improved significantly ever since – heck, the September update fixed numerous freezes and crashes while offering further optimizations. Few ports survive first impact with a new console, though, but at the very least, you shouldn’t see anywhere near as many stutters and drops as launch day.

DualSense Support

As with every former Xbox console exclusive coming to PS5, the question is: What exclusive features can you look forward to? Tempest 3D Audio for directional sounds is great, but DualSense is the main draw with haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support, right down to different trigger resistance depending on the weapon (and their wear and tear). However, the highlight is probably the touchpad for gestures, including playing the guitar – perfect for adding to campfire conversations.

PS5 Pro support

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 offers two modes on the base PS5 – 4K/30 FPS in Quality and 2K/60 FPS in Performance, though it’s aiming for 4K/60 FPS in the latter by launch. However, PS5 Pro players will see improved visuals, as revealed to Tech Radar Gaming by technical producer Yevhenii Kulyk. The shadow quality, VFX shading quality, and volumetrics, including clouds and lighting, have been tweaked. But that’s not all, as the official features trailer confirmed improvements to global illumination, reflections and shadow resolution as well.

Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate Editions

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has three editions to choose from. The Standard retails for $60 and includes only the base game, while the Deluxe Edition is for $80 and includes a bonus side quest, a digital artbook and soundtrack app, and the Deluxe Weapons and Suit Pack (which packs six weapons and three suits). The Ultimate Edition includes everything in the Deluxe Edition but also adds four more weapons and an Exoskeleton alongside the Season Pass for two upcoming story expansions. All this for $109.99.

With this feature, we take a look at S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 on the PS5 and comparing its visual presentation and performance against the Xbox Series X and PC.

GSC Game World’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is considered as one of the best games in its class, thanks to its fantastic depiction of a post-apocalypse, complete with the brutality and chaos that comes with it. Last year’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl was a much-awaited sequel that made fans endure more than a couple of delays, but the end product was nothing short of spectacular.

It’s been a year since the game originally came out, and it stands tall as one of the best-looking games on the market. Keeping in line with originally Xbox-exclusive releases making their way to Sony platforms, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is finally available on PS5. Naturally, that raises the question: how does it perform, and how does it stack up against its direct competitor, the Xbox Series X, as well as a decently powered PC?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is built on Unreal Engine 5, the latest version of Epic’s widely used development tech. It has a competent rendering stack that puts together intelligent world streaming systems, ray-traced GI, robust NPC generation systems, and photogrammetry options together to create a framework that’s truly unparalleled, although many games on it have struggled on the performance front.

Regardless, it’s a cross-platform engine at its core, so porting from one system to another (and to PC) isn’t as demanding as it would be with a platform-specific engine. As a result, there isn’t a stark difference between the different versions of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, just iterative upgrades and improvements from console to PC.

On PS5, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 benefits from a robust rendering pipeline that showcases the game at its best while maintaining stable performance. The same global illumination solution seen in previous versions is used here, ensuring both direct and indirect lighting remain accurate, while additional cinematic lights are introduced during cutscenes to highlight character expressions and add depth to key moments.

Texture quality is also great, with a high average polycount found across all assets in the environment. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 also makes use of photogrammetry to great effect, so the different materials on display look quite realistic. Asset density is also appropriately high, and the visual pop-in is minimal – making the world feel a lot more surreal.

This version closely resembles that of the Xbox Series X, and we can see comparable rendering resolutions across the board. Of course, that shouldn’t come as a surprise since both machines have similar architectures and power budgets. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any differences that you can spot.

Surprisingly, the PS5 can outperform the Xbox Series X by a small margin – and that’s evident in the environments. You can spot some increased foliage density or sharper shadows with lesser artifacting, so the asset density quality seems to be a tad bit higher on the PS5 than what Microsoft’s machine can achieve. But again, both of these versions have the same presentation in broad strokes.

To recap, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 recommends players have at least a Ryzen 7 5800X or equivalent CPU, 32 GB of RAM, and RTX 3070 Ti. For our testing purposes, we ran the game on a system comprising an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti, and 32 GB RAM which is quite a bit over what the game recommends for itself. We also installed the game on a PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD to ensure storage performance wasn’t a limiting factor in our testing.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 on PC presents us with a wide range of sliders that can be used to find the perfect balance between performance and graphical fidelity. The game offers options for upscaling with support for both AMD’s FSR 3, Nvidia’s DLSS, and Intel’s XeSS alongside frame generation options. For our tests, we knocked the settings all the way to Epic at a resolution of native 4K. DLSS upscaling was turned to Quality, which puts the internal rendering scale to 66 percent.

Compared to the PS5, the PC version pulls ahead slightly, with the PS5 release essentially serving as a close approximation of the PC’s High preset. In our tests, texture quality was consistently better on PC, with noticeably sharper assets across the various environments. World streaming also performed a bit better, resulting in fewer visible LOD pop-ins and swapping artifacts than on consoles.

Another noticeable upgrade lies in the game’s volumetric effects. Fog, smoke layers, and atmospheric scattering appear richer and more detailed on PC, particularly at sunrise or during the intense electrical storms that sweep across the Zone. These effects tend to get dialed down on the PS5,, but the Epic settings on PC allow them to shine brighter – resulting in a more solid post-processing pipeline.

When it comes to performance, all three versions have quite a few differences. On the PS5, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 offers both a Quality Mode which runs on a higher native resolution with all the graphical bells and whistles and a cap of 30fps, and secondly, there’s a performance Mode, which tones down a few knobs and bumps the frame rate to 60 FPS.

The 60 FPS mode is obviously the preferred way to play since the responsiveness does help in combat, and we are happy to report that it holds up well for the majority of gameplay scenarios – only showing drops during heavy combat encounters or occasionally sprinting across open fields. Quality Mode provides a more stable image and hovers around its target frame-rate a lot more – but it just doesn’t feel right in comparison to the sheer fluidity of the performance mode.

Comparing it to the Xbox Series X, it’s almost similar, with Microsoft’s machine exhibiting a similar performance profile. However, it does maintain slightly better stability in open regions. Frame dips are less frequent on the Series X, likely due to a combination of its marginally stronger GPU and the many post-launch patches that have improved and stabilized performance.

Back at launch on the PC, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was averaging anywhere between 40fps to 60fps when we turned up the settings to Ultra with 4K resolution and DLSS upscaling, and the major culprit for tanking the frame rate continues to be the post-processing effects like volumetrics and particle effects. It’s a graphically demanding game on the PC, and using an aggressive DLSS option or adaptive VSync might help in achieving a more stable 60fps result.

When comparing load times between the two consoles, starting a new game on PS5 takes roughly 10 seconds. That might not sound especially quick at first glance, but it’s still noticeably snappier than the Xbox Series X, which takes a bit longer to load into the game. As such, the PS5 edges ahead in this regard. This highlights the strengths of Sony’s hardware and its higher SSD I/O throughput, though there’s clearly room for further optimization on the Series X side.

Conclusion

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl stands tall as a technical and artistic showcase across every platform, but each version has its own identity – making it hard to choose one over another. The PS5 and Xbox Series X deliver visually rich experiences that capture the hidden beauty of the Exclusion Zone with minimal compromises.

When it was first released last year, we at GamingBolt absolutely loved it, awarding a superb 9/10. However, the game has been drastically improved over the last several months, with many patches fixing various balance issues, tightening up gameplay mechanics, and, most importantly, addressing A Life. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 now feels great to play regardless of which version you choose, and it easily stands as one of the best shooters of this generation. It delivers an intimidating world that makes every bit of progress feel earned. It’s hard, brutal, and challenging all at once, and that’s exactly why the gameplay loop feels so engaging—it keeps you on edge at all times and never lets up.

The PS5 edges ahead slightly in visuals and load times, and GSC Game World has also made good use of DualSense’s enhanced haptics to make the experience a lot more interactive – but performance isn’t nearly as stable as what Xbox Series X can offer. But both versions of the game remain the same in broad strokes, and are great choices nonetheless. Yet, the PC version remains the definitive way to experience the game on account of higher flexibility for adjusting the balance between fidelity and performance.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 on the PS5 is a great conversion of what is one of the best post-apocalyptic experiences of recent memory. There may still be a few rough edges here and there, but GSC Game World has done a commendable job overall, and those who didn’t get a chance to play it at launch should definitely give it a try now. It’s in a much better state today, thanks to the numerous patches released over the past year.
