The Nissan PlayStation GT Academy, which, as the name gives away, was formed by Nissan and PlayStation India (co-branded with the Gran Turismo series) to scout out and promote motor racing talent in India, has been a success thus far, seeing aspiring racers from both Mumbai and Delhi. However, it is Mumbai that is currently topping the leaderboards.

Of course, the story isn’t over yet- the award-winning and internationally acclaimed driver discovery program will complete qualifying rounds in Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai by June 2014 before finalizing the quickest 14 lap times that emerge out of all five cities in contention for the first Indian edition of GT Academy.

The program uses Gran Turismo co-branding; Gran Turismo 6 was released on the PlayStation 3 late last year to middled response both from the critics and from the general gaming public, further signifying the series’ downward slide that began with Gran Turismo 5 back in 2010. A new Gran Turismo game for the PlayStation 4 is expected.

Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed while speaking to Autoweek that a sixth installment in the long running racing sim franchise is already under development. When he was asked when the game will be released, Yamauchi was reluctant to answer. Okay, so Gran Turismo 5 is taking ages to release, and they’re already working on a sixth GT? Awesome.

“It’s not something that we can talk that lightly on,” he said. “It took 2,000 days to get all the ideas that went into GT5. It’s just too early to be talking about GT6.”

It’s still good news to hear that if Gran Turismo 6 is in development, it will be released someday, and for that, Gran Turismo 5 will have to release first- it will happen, then.

But Polyphony boss Kaz Yamauchi already has plans for a new GT title. And we won’t even have to wait for Gran Turismo 6 as long as we waited for GT5. “Yes. You won’t have to wait as long as you did for GT5. GT5 was basically the creation of a whole new operating system, and developing GT6 will be like adding new applications that run on that new operating system.”

He has revealed that the kart racer feature that was introduced to GT5 and revealed recently at GamesCom was something they were originally planning to incorporate in the next GT title. “This is something we were actually saving for Gran Turismo 6,” he said, “but the information leaked out so we decided we would just put it in this one.

Just don’t make us wait anymore! Please!

“The main problem is that you need to double the number of FPS and then the machine can do all the work. But to have double the number of FPS is a challenge,” he said.

Head of physics designers Irvin Zonca said: “The technology itself is at an early age. When we try it for video games, something works well, something doesn’t work well. So we don’t think this is the right time to focus on that one, we prefer to focus on the whole game on the physics, on the licence, on the gameplay for this first edition.”

It was in this very interview that these two guys said that they’re not afraid GT5 might eat up many of WRC 2010’s sales. Check it out here.

“We are not scared about Gran Turismo,” Irvin Zonca said.

“No because our game is completely different to Gran Turismo, honestly,” Fabio Paglianti chipped in with his own comment.

“It’s another kind of game. We give the players a completely different experience. It is based on the official license, which has been missing from the market for the last five years for PlayStation users and I don’t remember if there’s been a WRC game on Xbox and never on PC I think so it’s like a new kind of market in this sense.”

“It’s based on a different type of driving style because with a game like[Gran Turismo 5 you drive faster but like a real car in the road. In rally it’s completely different you have to understand; what is the ground, the grip, the speed? And then you can try and do a handbrake manoeuvre, you can try and do a counter-steering manoeuvre so it’s a completely different way of driving.”

They also go on to say that Gran Turismo 5 is far from real rallying.

“In Gran Turismo you don’t have the official 2010 cars. They are not updated,’ Zonca said. The two of them also pointed out that the cars and locations in Gran Turismo 5 are three years old.

“For example, Tuscany is not a real location. If you look at the way the graphics are polished, they’re really beautiful but the fact is that it’s not real because you have this wide circuit covered with dust, it’s a circuit with one type of gravel instead of the tarmac.”

“If we would have done Tuscany we would have had not a circuit but a starting point and an ending point, with a lot of fans, different terrains, different objects in the circuit. With Gran Turismo there are no trees and stones and bushes in the circuit, it’s like racing on a dirty track so it’s really really different.”

Before signing off, Palgianti had one last thing to say- “A fan of WRC can find, finally, a WRC game for the console and for the PC. For someone who doesn’t know anything about WRC can taste the difference, which is the difference between WRC and all the other kind of games, because it’s a rally game – completely different.”

Don’t worry Black Bean, we have a hunch GT5 will be delayed again, and you’ll be saying this same stuff next year, when GT5 will supposedly be releasing a month after WRC 2011.

The game looks top-notch and look very life-like and plays likewise. The animations in the video are particularly good, and the gameplay doesn’t look much different from past GT games.

Gran Tursimo 5 is due for release this November for the PS3. Hopefully.
