The famous director remarks that he has "no clues" about the game and wants to know more himself.

Even though he’s a character in the game and closely associated with director Hideo Kojima since the days of Silent Hills/P.T., film director Guillermo del Toro admits that he has no idea what Death Stranding is about. In fact, in a recent Reddit AMA focused on promoting his film The Shape of Water, Guillermo was asked about Death Stranding and said he himself was “dying to know.”

“Kojima San scanned my body and face for the model over an entire day in Toronto. He needed it for the digital Avatar (and for blackmail, perhaps) and he then sent me the teaser you all saw. That’s it- He send me toys and gifts every few weeks but NO clues. I am dying to know,” said del Toro.

This is in line with a previous answer that del Toro gave many months ago when asked what the game was about. Whether del Toro is teasing fans or genuinely has no clue about Kojima’s game, we know that both will be present at The Game Awards 2017 on December 7th. If new information or even gameplay is to be revealed about Death Stranding, that will be the place to see it.

Death Stranding is currently in development for PS4 and PC. Sony will be publishing the game following Kojima’s split from Konami and establishment of Kojima Productions.

He only plays a character and does what Kojima tells him.

Remember when Mads Mikkelsen, known for his role as Hannibal and the antagonist in Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding, confessed to not understanding Hideo Kojima’s newest title? Guillermo del Toro is sort of in the same boat.

Speaking to IGN, del Toro – who made an appearance in the latest trailer showcased at The Game Awards 2016 – confessed that he has no creative say in the project. “I’m involved as a character. He’s discussed his ideas so I could understand the character, but other than that I’m not involved, creatively, at all.

“This is entirely Kojima-san’s game. I think it’s gonna be a fantastic game, 100%. But this is him and his ideas. I’m just a puppet in his hands. My contribution is limited to being a cheerleader for his ideas and being scanned for long hours at a time. That’s about it.”

Death Stranding is in development for PS4 and PC. It currently doesn’t have a release date.

Aw, thanks man!

Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak director Guillermo del Toro has been fairly vocal about his dislike for Konami. The man was brought on to work with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima for Silent Hills, which was subsequently cancelled when the publisher and Kojima parted ways.

Del Toro took to Twitter before to say, simply put, “F**k Konami”. To celebrate the holidays, he decided to give it another go, in case they didn’t get the message the first time.

“Important Holiday messages that right true today as they always have: Feliz Navidad. Happy Holidays. F**k Konami.”

Del Toro later clarified that he meant “ring” true and not “right” true before noting, “still, F**k ’em.”

Last we spotted del Toro was in The Game Awards trailer for Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding which saw Mads Mikkelsen of Hannibal fame debuting as the antagonist. What are your thoughts on del Toro’s continued disdain for the Metal Gear publisher? Let us know in the comments.

Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro were supposed to come together and develop Silent Hills, a bold, fresh, and promising new take on Konami’s formerly great survival horror series, that promised to breathe new life into the genre. Sadly, it was never to be, and beyond the promising glimpse that we got in P.T., we never got to see what would come of this union- Kojima’s ugly spat and break up with Konami ensured that.

But the two auteurs will be coming together to discuss their creative visions regardless- at DICE, Geoff Keighley will be hosting a Thursday afternoon session, entitled “A Conversation with Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro,” in which both, Kojima and del Toro, will “revisit some of their fondest memories from their own individual careers as well as some of the pivotal moments from each other’s work that remain a constant source of inspiration.”

del Toro will also be awarding Kojima with DICE’s Hall of Fame award at DICE.

"I have faith that we're going to do something."

Silent Hills aka P.T. may have been cancelled, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima may be gone from Konami and Guillermo del Toro has sworn off the games industry but actor Norman Reedus – who was to play the lead in the psychological horror title – has faith that something will happen with the three of them.

Speaking to IGN, Reedus said, “I’m super bummed that that happened back in Japan. But I have faith. I have faith that we, the three of us, can do something else.

“There were so many ideas and cool future happenings that were thrown around. I just can’t see us not picking this up somewhere.” That being said, there was only some photography done and “we never got into the full story stuff.”

As for the reaction to the game’s cancellation, Reedus said it made him think, “‘Holy balls. It has to happen. You need to do this.’

“I have faith that we’re going to do something though because it just seems like it was one of those things that needs to happen. It’s like destiny, it needs to happen.”

But will it? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Guillermo del Toro thinks he's proven "an albatross" for video games.

Guillermo del Toro has recently revealed that will “never again” get involved with video games. The veteran film-maker, who was to work with Hideo Kojima on Konami’s Silent Hills aka P.T. simply believes he’s bad news for video games after it was cancelled.

Speaking to Shack News, del Toro said, “I have proven to be the albatross of video games. I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I have decided I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone and his house will explode, or something.”

Del Toro’s work with THQ included two years on InSane with Volition which never saw the light of day. Thankfully, it seems del Toro had a good experience working with Kojima and looks forward to learning more from him as a friend.

While open to the idea of video games based on his own properties, del Toro won’t be involved with games again. “If I join another video game, World War III will start.”

Guillermo del Toro's studio is apparently working on a trailer for the next Fallout.

Rumours had been running rampant about Bethesda finally revealing Fallout 4 at E3 2015, as evidenced by the developer holding its first ever press conference on June 14th. And while it hasn’t outright confirmed the same, little tidbits of information have begun emerging to suggest the game’s reveal. First, there were insider reports of a 20 to 30 minute demo being shown behind closed doors.

However, it seems that a cinematic trailer is in the works as well. Videogamer discovered the CV of a Miranda Studios 3D artist who’s been working on a “Fallout 4 cinematic trailer” from December 2014 to March 2015. Miranda Studios is better known as film maker Guillermo del Toro’s studio which has worked on numerous projects. The artist in question has helped to create cinematics for Far Cry 4, The Elder Scrolls Online and much more.

While it doesn’t seem like Falluot 4 will be showcased in gameplay form, an announcement trailer of some sort should be expected at this point. Stay sceptical though as anything can happen at E3 2015.

What's scarier than knowing what's coming? What you didn't see the first time.

In the wake of Hideo Kojima’s P.T., which actually turned out to be a teaser for Silent Hills, the discussion of what constitutes true horror has come up. Many people expressed disappointment with the game for having jump scares but it still embodied the psychological horror that Silent Hill is so well known. It’s actually possible that Silent Hills may end up being one of the scariest games of all time. This is due to Kojima’s experience with the Metal Gear Solid series, believe it or not.

When Amnesia: The Dark Descent had released, it signalled a return to true blue horror. None of the action adventure, over the shoulder shooting here – you solved puzzles, confronted an unstoppable monster that could appear anywhere, at any time and tried your level best to survive. In fact, survival was the only base instinct one could revert since there was a complete deprivation of other information. Who are you? Why are you being chased? Will this ever end? Will you find any answers before it does and achieve some form of meaning with your brief existence? Amnesia was smart enough to keep it simple and while it’s an amazing horror experience, it’s still caught within the confines of a linear experience.

"But one of the key elements of horror lays in the unexpected. You can't be surprised if you've played through it once and know what to expect."

The same is the case with Red Barrels’ Outlast, one of the most terrifying things this generation. Rather than take a nuanced approach, the developer went balls to the walls with terror. Escape sequences, peppered with obstacles and running; stealth sequences wherein you had to avoid a specific inmate/monster in order to activate some machinery; and so on. Some sequences were just too bizarre to even categorize – often times, you’d be freaked out by simply walking in on what inmates were doing or in your encounters with the demented cast. The problem? In order to achieve that level of horror, Outlast was a highly linear experience. Make no mistake, you could and should play it multiple times.

But one of the key elements of horror lays in the unexpected. You can’t be surprised if you’ve played through it once and know what to expect. The most you can do is up the difficulty and surprise yourself with how much harder it is the second (or third) time around. And there’s not a lot of horror to be derived from taking one stab to die versus two.

That’s why Silent Hills has us so excited. If you’ve played P.T., you’ll notice that no two people have the exact same scares. Some people see the ghost of Lisa (?) in the bathroom mirror. Others have encountered her up close in the hallways. She may be upstairs, peeking out over the railing and observing you, always with that sick smile on her face. The most unnerving part? When you go to switch off the radio and a dastardly voice tells you to “look behind you”. What’s there? Nothing. Or there most definitely will be something. It’s insane and in a very good way.

"Silent Hills - if it indeed takes place from the first person perspective - subverts this because it's a Silent Hill game. You rightfully don't know what to expect."

Kojima did make sure to stuff a bunch of other non-typical horror elements as well. Some elements of the scenery change as you observe them closer. The lighting will alter. You’ll need to take a non-linear approach at some paints. There are experiments with motion as well as you suddenly speed up in a blur-induced spell, witnessing eyeballs spinning in paintings. While it has been indicated that the gameplay is not representative of the final product, we can only hope that this is indeed Kojima’s approach.

Horror games, for better or worse, need a shake-up. It was novel three years ago to do a first person horror title that had you on the edge of your seat at all times, listening for each little sound to make sure you didn’t get got. Now it’s been done to death. Silent Hills – if it indeed takes place from the first person perspective – subverts this because it’s a Silent Hill game. You rightfully don’t know what to expect. Mix that with Kojima’s own brand of madness (remember Metal Gear Solid 2?) and you have a solution that’s potent enough to appease even the most hardened horror fans.

Because if there’s one thing we need more than anything in the horror genre right now, it’s the unexpected and being completely unprepared each and every time.

Hint: It just translates to "Silent Hills".

Hideo Kojima may not have wowed the world with Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain at this year’s Gamescom but he did have a much different, more terrifying revelation to reveal. This was “P.T.” or to be more precise, it was a playable teaser for Silent Hills, directed by Hideo Kojima with Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reeds playing the protagonist.

Needless to say, it scared everyone senseless but what was up with the “7780s” in the opening title? Kojima explained this at last in a new Konami video and noted that it was another way of saying “Silent Hills”. In Japan, 7780 is the postcode for Shizuoka. It sounds similar to “shizuka” which means quiet or calm and has been used a nickname by Japanese gamers for Silent Hill. So when you add an “s” at the end, it becomes “Shizuokas” or Silent Hills.

We’d say it’s clever by Kojima standards but not overtly cryptic. Silent Hills still has plenty of surprises in store though so stay tuned for more information.

IP rights have been returned to del Toro and it’s unknown exactly how far into development Volition were up until this point.

THQ have also abandoned mobile and casual ambitions for the time being, Jason Rubin, THQ’s President stated, “By canceling these explorations outside of our core business, we feel we can improve focus on our core game portfolio, which remains unchanged.”

Let’s hope Insane gets picked up by someone else as a horror game directed by a bonafide horror director. Please.
