These include Crunchyroll and Movieplex Play, but still no HBO Go.

The Xbox One got a new batch of media apps yesterday, which up the ante on its media functionality and integration even more than it already is, in spite of Microsoft’s retreat from its now famous ‘TV! TV! TV!’ tag line; these new apps represent a diverse bunch, including anime streaming service Crunchyroll, and home cideo and cinema options such as Encore Play and Movieplex Play.

It’s a broad range, but unfortunately, one of the leading media apps, HBO Go, is still missing in action. According to reports, it is slated to come to the Xbox One some time before the end of this year, but as we race towards that deadline, it seems increasingly unlikely that it will be met.

HBO Go’s utility is set to compound even further next year, given that it will finally be de-bundled from cable subscriptions and be offered standalone. That said, while its absence is glaring, it’s hard to deny that even without it, the Xbox One is a very capable and efficient media player.

Expect more app functionality on the Xbox platform in the coming days.

The Xbox One will be receiving 46 new apps in the coming days, marking a 25 percent increase in the total apps for the console and providing a total of 225 apps overall for use. You can check out the demo video from Major Nelson above on how one of these apps – Twitter – will work with the Xbox One.

Speaking on Xbox Wire, Corporate VP of Devices and Studios at Microsoft Yusuf Mehdi stated that “Xbox fans are spending more time than ever on the console, spending more than five hours a day on Xbox One.

“Today as we announce new commitments from dozens of our partners, including deep integration with experiences like Twitter and Vine, we hit an important milestone in our journey to deliver unique experiences on Xbox. We’re thrilled to break new ground in social TV experiences like we’re doing with Twitter on Xbox One.”

Other apps include Vine, MLG, HBO GO, Comedy Central and many more. Stay tuned for more details.

Right as the PS4 is introduced. Good job, guys.

The PlayStation 3 finally gets HBO’s companion media streaming app, HBO Go, is finally coming to the PlayStation 3 today in North America, the Official PlayStation Blog announced. This means that you can catch all of HBO’s biggest hits, past and present, such as The Sopranos, The Wire, Game of Thrones, True Detective, and so on, on your PlayStation 3 now.

This marks the first appearance of HBO’s app on PlayStation hardware- previously, it had been limited to the Xbox line, and indeed, the Xbox 360, exclusively. Sony has announced that this is essentially the opening of floodgates though, as they revealed that they are working with HBO ‘diligently to bring HBO Go to the PlayStation 4.’ No word yet on whether they will also bring it to the PS Vita, although that would be much appreciated, guys.

HBO Go is currently not on either the Xbox One or the Wii U, though, so at least its absence on the PlayStation 4 isn’t as urgent a matter.
