The epic battle arrives on handhelds today.

As if the release of Assassin’s Creed Pirates weren’t enough, EA has announced that Heroes of Dragon Age is now available for iOS and Android via Apple iTunes and Google Play respectively. It will be playable on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and various Android smartphones and tablets (though more powerful handsets will have an advantage).

Heroes of Dragon Age is developed by Inside Mobile Apps and is a free to play title that features strategic combat in which players will be able to collect more than 100 heroes – including dragons, golems and hopefully the Darkspawn as well – and have them fight other players in squads. You can also take part in quests and face bosses. Heroes of Dragon. Combine compatible heroes and runes and you’ll be able to enhance various statistics for your squad.

Will it be intriguing enough, considering that Dragon Age has faced a bit of a slump after the second game and Inquisition is still a ways off? We’ll find out.

EA is quite serious about its free to play push, if Command & Conquer and Plants Vs. Zombies 2 weren’t enough of an indicator. But it’s going the whole hog, as COO Peter Moore recently revealed that there will be F2P versions of every franchise going forward.

Speaking to Engadget at Gamescom, Moore stated that, “The ability for you to be able to interact with those franchises on a free-to-play basis is going to be part-and-parcel with every major franchise we do now.” This is exemplified with titles such as Heroes of Dragon Age and FIFA 14 which will both be free to play and on mobile.

“We don’t ship a game at EA that is offline. It just doesn’t happen. And gamers either want to be connected so their stats and achievements reflect who they are, or you want the full multiplayer experience on top of that. We don’t deliver offline experiences anymore.”

Which is hilarious since the most common complaints with online experiences has been related to the always-online SimCity and the Xbox One’s former DRM policies.
