Clovers won't necessarily work on a follow-up to classics like God Hand and Viewtiful Joe after development on the Okami sequel is done.

While Hideki Kamiya is working with studio Clovers on the long-awaited sequel to action/adventure game Okami, he has revealed that the studio will not just be making sequels to old games. Speaking to Japanese publication GameSpark (translation via VGC), Kamiya, along with Kento Koyama, spoke about their work at Clovers.

According to Koyama, Covers “will not close off any possibilities when it comes to making games.” He spoke about how, after the studio is done with its work on Okami 2, its next project might even be a new IP.

“Basically, I don’t think that we limited the methods we use in our approach to our policy of creating interesting games,” said Koyama.

“If we were asked to make a game that uses an existing IP, and if it looked like it would be interesting to ‘Cloverize’ it in our own way, then we would do it,” said Kamiya, following up on Koyama’s statement.

“But of course, if we get a project proposal that we really want to work on, and the desire to go it grows, then we’ll do an original work too. So I think it’s appropriate to say we won’t close off any possibilities – in the end, it all comes down to whether or not we get a ‘wow’ feeling from it.”

Capping off the interview, Kamiya acknowledges the fact that some fans of classic games by Clover Studios during the early-2000s might be disappointed about more IPs from the time not returning.

“We’re only working on one thing at the moment, and it just so happens that it’s an IP I was involved with in the past, so I think it’s inevitable that that impression is strong,” said Kamiya. “The fact that we’re attracting attention because of that expectation is something we’re grateful for, but I want to reiterate that just because this is our first shot, it doesn’t mean that this is all we have to offer.”

The original Clover Studio, founded back in 2004, worked on quite a few critically-acclaimed titles with Capcom acting as its publisher. During its short run up until its closure in 2007, Clover Studio worked on the Viewtiful Joe games, as well as cult-favourite action game God Hand, alongside the seminal Okami. In its time, the studio developed and released six games across a variety of platforms, from the PS2 to the Nintendo DS.

Earlier this month, Kamiya had also expressed interest in some day returning to work on cancelled project Scalebound. Meant to be one of the tentpole releases for the Xbox One, development on Scalebound was ultimately stopped.

“Noticed some excitement around Kamiya’s desk…” posted Clovers on social media while showing a video of Kamiya excitedly watching an old trailer for Scalebound. “He was reminiscing about the development of Scalebound while watching YouTube videos. It never made it to release, but even now, he still feels proud of it.”

The Clovers account capped the post off by quoting Kamiya saying, “I’d love to make it again someday.”

A sequel to Okami was unveiled during The Game Awards 2024. The project is being headed up by Kamiya, with development being handled by new studio Clovers.

Kamiya compares a potential collaboration with other developers to fusion in Dragon Ball, stating that it doesn't work that way in real life.

Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya has revealed in a recent video on his YouTube channel that he believes a collaboration between him and other major Japanese game developers, such as Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima or Nier creator Yoko Taro would be a disaster.

“Look. It would be a DISASTER!” says Kamiya.

Comparing the idea to characters fusing in Dragon Ball, Kamiya says that it doesn’t work like that in real life, since multiple strong personalities working on the same project together would clash quite a bit.

“It doesn’t work like in Dragon Ball, where Goku fuses with other characters,” he says. “Two people with completely different personalities and ideas would clash. There’s no way you’d get a decent game out of that.”

Kamiya brings up a Japanese saying akin to the old adage that too many cooks would spoil the broth, stating that he believes that game development should revolve around a single direction and vision, rather than having competing visions clashing against each other.

“There is a Japanese saying, maybe a proverb? ‘Too many captains will steer the ship up a mountain’… so there should only be ONE CAPTAIN!”

Kamiya talks about the future of the Bayonetta franchise in the same video. Responding to a fan’s question, Kamiya stated that he had a vision for Bayonetta being a franchise with nine distinct games that are now unlikely to ever see development. He does expect the franchise to continue at PlatinumGames without him, however.

Kamiya left PlatinumGames back in September, stating that the departure was not an easy decision to make. Kamiya has had a hand in quite a few major titles over the years, from Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry during his time at Capcom, to Okami as part of Clover Studios.

Kamiya has also revealed that he won't be able to work at another studio for at least a year.

Hideki Kamiya, formerly a vice president at PlatinumGames, has launched his own YouTube channel, where he revealed that he feels “very refreshed” after resigning from the company he co-founded.

Kamiya, having worked at PlatinumGames since it was founded 15 years ago, has stated that he isn’t planning to retire from game development. He did mention, however, that he won’t be able to work at another studio for at least a year.

“I feel very refreshed after leaving [Platinum],” said Kamiya. “I’ve been watching Netflix, Disney Plus, YouTube and stuff like that. I’ve already lost track of what day it is.”

“I haven’t been to work for a while,” Kamiya continued. “I think it’s been about three months since I decided to quit. Once I decided to leave, I had to clean up all these toys and stuff like that. Once I finished cleaning, I was at home with my paid vacation.”

Kamiya announced his departure from PlatinumGames in September. He has worked with the studio on a number of iconic games, including Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101.

Hideki Kamiya promises to "keep delivering fun games".

The cancellation of Platinum Games’ Scalebound has become quite the kerfuffle, especially some of the rumours that have been circulating regarding Microsoft’s harsh milestones for development.

However, one such rumour seems to be thankfully false. Director Hideki Kamiya took to Twitter to apologize for the game’s cancellation. “As you may have already heard, Scalebound has unfortunately been canceled. I’m very sorry to everyone who was looking forward to this game.”

Kamiya isn’t too disheartened though. He added, “Sorry to bring you such bad news at the start of the year. All I can do for you is to promise to keep delivering fun games.”

He further said that, “I’ll work extra hard to never have to let you down like this again, so I hope you will keep watching over us in the future too.”

And finally, Kamiya addressed rumours that he was taking time off for his mental health. “And…I took time off for my mental health? …Me!? No way.”

What’s next for Platinum Games? Aside from NieR: Automata on the PS4, it will also be working on Granblue Fantasy Project Re:Link and Lost Order.

Reputed insider notes that Hideki Kamiya isn't doing well.

Platinum Games’ Scalebound being cancelled is the biggest news of the day and why not? The action RPG was showcased at E3 2016 and was pegged to release last year before being delayed to 2017. When reports began to surface about its trouble development, Microsoft finally confirmed that it had indeed been cancelled.

None of this is good news, especially for members of Platinum Games who have had a taxing time. Director Hideki Kamiya is especially having trouble – as industry insider shinobi602 on NeoGAF, Kamiya “took time off for his mental health.” Again, take things with a grain of salt but it wouldn’t be surprising considering the sudden announcement of this cancellation.

Scalebound was in development for Xbox One and PC. It was to take place in an open world with a controllable dragon, co-op play, Devil May Cry-like hack and slash combat and much more. Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently said that despite the cancellation being a difficult decision, it would be better for gamers in the long run.

Platinum Games is very busy these days. It’s busy working on NieR: Automata for PS4 and Scalebound for Xbox One/Windows 10, both out in 2017, and according to director Hideki Kamiya, there are other ideas in the pipeline.

Speaking to Metro, Kamiya was told conversing about Bayonetta and when told that her first haircut was preferred, he replied, “Then we will take that into account when we design her haircut when we start doing 3, if we ever make 3.”

Much shock followed apparently (including among those in Platinum Games) and Kamiya confirmed that, “Of course we want to make 3. Why should it end at 2?”

He then revealed that while he hadn’t spoken to any publishers about it, “I’ve spent a lot of time thinking in my head what that game would be. I’ve got ideas in my head for Okami 2 as well.”

Furthermore, Kamiya ended up by saying, “We’ve got other Scalebounds in our heads too.”

That’s certainly a way to get everyone’s attention. This isn’t outright confirmation that any of these games are in development, by the way, but Kamiya isn’t one to mince words. What are your thoughts on getting Bayonetta 3, Okami 2 and more Scalebound games? Let us know in the comments.

Platinum Games director talks about the original idea for Scalebound.

Platinum Games’ Scalebound sure looks nice. So nice, in fact, that we were sold on the concept as soon as the gameplay debuted at Gamescom 2015. However, getting there wasn’t an easy task. According to director Hideki Kamiya in conversation with GameSpot, Scalebound was originally meant to release on the Wii and actually went through two prototypes that never saw the light of day.

“When they first started, the idea was for a Wii game and we wanted to use a Wii remote to do the orders for the dinosaurs. You were in control of the dinosaurs, you were ordering the dinosaurs around, and they’d do cool things. Then after we made Bayonetta, we started the prototype. The first thing that I made a change to was making it a dragon game.

“We changed the dinosaurs to dragons, but at that point the lead character was even weaker than [current protagonist] Drew is in the context of Scalebound. She was actually a little girl who was with these dragons.”

Scalebound is currently set to release in Holiday 2016 for the Xbox One. What are your thoughts on it at this point? Let us know in the comments.

Hideki Kamiya wants to make sure you get the most value when playing Scalebound.

Platinum Games’ Scalebound has been one of the biggest topics of Gamescom 2015, which is no easy feat considering all the games that were showcased. While Xbox division boss Phil Spencer promised it would be a true AAA title, director Hideki Kamiya is going a step further and ensuring that the open world action RPG will show off what the Xbox One is capable of.

In conversation with Metro, Kamiya said, “So in terms of, say, Scalebound, which is an exclusive title for Xbox One, my ultimate goal and mission is that this will help appeal to, and also heighten the value, of not just my game but also the console, and show the power of what Xbox One can do.”

And despite the pedigree that Platinum Games has, Kamiya is still working hard to deliver for both the players and Microsoft.

“Towards the players, my commitment and my promise to them is that you’re buying a game that we created and you’re paying for it. I need to make sure that you get the value, and hopefully even more, for the amount that you’ve paid. So I think that very simply fact is what keeps us going, because our partners see the commitment that we put into the games that we’re making.”

Scalebound is currently set to release in Holiday 2016. Thoughts on Kamiya’s statements? Let us know below.

Capcom alum still holds a soft spot for his former employers.

Hideki Kamiya is a legendary game designer- modern gamers might know him best for The Wonderful 101, Scalebound, or Bayonetta, but his real all star output came out while he was working with Capcom, with games such as Viewtiful Joe, Devil May Cry, Okami, and Resident Evil 2 made on his watch.

His parting with Capcom, which came in the wake of his beloved Clover Studios being closed, was acrimonious- having led many to believe that there would be little to no chance of the legendary developer ever getting to work on his most well known properties ever again. However, in a recent interview with The Metro, Kamiya has said that he has no issues working with Capcom again, should the circumstances ever arise.

“However, I can honestly say that if there’s ever an opportunity, that makes sense for me or the studio, to work with Capcom again I would very much welcome that opportunity. Of all the publishers, not just Japanese publishers or partners, I can say with confidence that Capcom still holds a very, very special place in my heart and I love them dearly. It’s one of my favorite companies,” he said. Getting to see Kamiya working on a new Devil May Cry or Viewtiful Joe? Make. This. Happen.

Possible reveal during Nintendo's E3 direct presentation?

It may be a long shot but Platinum Games’ Hideki Kamiya, best known for his work on the Bayonetta series, may have teased a reveal for Bayonetta 3 on Twitter.

When asked by fans what other hairstyle would look good on Jeanne, a central character in both previous games, Kamiya replied, “The answer will be in Bayo 3 ;)”

Obviously this is far from official confirmation from the same. However, it is (a) E3 season where anything can and has happened including The Last Guardian receiving a release date and Xbox One receiving backwards compatibility and (b) Bayonetta 2 was exclusive to the Wii U. Nintendo is still yet to present its line-up for E3. It’s highly possible that Bayonetta 3 is a part of it.

Would you like to see another sequel to Bayonetta especially considering how great the first two games were? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned for more information.
