Michael Pachter, Wedbush Morgan analyst, has called the UK retail market a joke, and he blames their policies due to all the bankruptcies the market is seeing right now.

GAME, HMV, have all filed for bankruptcies, and Pachter believes it is due to selling games for below market price resulting in them not making money, all for traffic.

“The UK games retail market is a joke, with retailers pricing below cost to drive traffic,” he told Digital Spy.

“That’s great for consumers, but retailers can’t make any money on games, hence the bankruptcies of GAME, HMV and Blockbuster, and the refusal of GameStop to expand into the market.”

He was also in support of used game sales and believed the absence of retailers like Gamestop was one reason why gamers haven’t had the credits to purchase new games.

“The absence of GameStop and the demise of GAME limits the ability of consumers to trade in used games, depriving many of credits that can be used to purchase new games.

“Retail needs to make money to exist, and games retail in the UK doesn’t make money.”

Vouchers cannot be bought and redeemed.

Eurogamer is reporting that HMV.com is now offline and you can’t make any purchases. Well, you could check that out for yourself but yeah, the retailer is now under administration.

They have even suspended the sale and redemption of gift vouchers.

“We don’t see this as a final chapter; we still believe there is a future. It might have to be a slightly different future, but one we can still try to achieve, so we’re working hard to make that happen,” HMV spokesperson Gennaro Castaldo told Eurogamer.

If you are planning to buy DmC there, then you can do that because it is available, Capcom has confirmed. However, future titles look uncertain. This is the same situation GAME went through, and hopefully someone will take over and fix these issues.

Here’s what the message reads when you go to HMV.com.

The image in question has been floating around for a while, photoshopped by a dissatisfied gamer in an attempt at what he thought the original 3DS should look like, so even the general design of the handheld console is inaccurate.

The 3DS XL in fact looks like this, and it seems this error is only specific to the Cardiff outlet as the material was put together by its staff.

Gamestop has finally launched in the UK, although, you can only buy things online for now. It’s good news for UK gamers, who already have plenty of options already available. It’s still a long way to go before we any sort of retail chains in India, as we are still a developing market, but it’s good to know these stores are expanding to new countries.

You can visit them online here – Gamestop UK

HMV Games re/play manager Martin Baxter has said “we’re incredibly proud and excited to be the-first-to-UK-market with a games trade-in app for iPhone and Android. This ground-breaking app will not only become a must-have download for current trade-in users, but will encourage a whole new range of customers who may have previously lacked the confidence or awareness to trade their games in.”

Like it or hate, the pre-owned market seems to expand a little bit more each and every day.
