Even with the odds stacked against them and all alone, these characters fought and sacrificed themselves to ensure a better tomorrow.

Like any medium, video games offer stories about heroes and villains, peace and conflict. While a perfect ending may be the goal, things don’t always work out that way. Sometimes, a character must sacrifice everything, even themselves, because it’s the right thing. Let’s take a look at 10 such characters here. Spoilers follow so be warned.

Arthur Morgan – Red Dead Redemption 2

Arthur Morgan has it pretty rough. With the Wild West simmering down, his leader Dutch Van der Linde taking great risks, and various forces plotting the gang’s downfall, he’s constantly on his guard. Nevertheless, Arthur is a warm presence in the gang, keeping things together even when later discovered to be dying from tuberculosis.

In the end, after finding out that Micah has been an informant for the Pinkertons, Arthur tries to convince Dutch of the betrayal (besides also helping John Marston make his escape). Even when the latter doesn’t believe him and Arthur is riddled with sickness while fighting off Micah, he still works to protect his friends. Eventually, he dies in peace, watching the sunrise, assuming the player has high honor.

Easing the player in may work for some games but these 13 titles prefer the sink-or-swim approach with their opening levels.

The first impression is oftentimes the most important. While a game may sometimes have only one chance to wow you with its premise and presentation, many will at least give the first level a shot. But not every game is interested in gently guiding the player along – some will use their opening levels to crush your spirit immediately. Let’s take a look at 13 such opening levels in video games and what made them so rough.

The Village of Cursed Blossoms – Nioh 2

The first main story mission seems innocent enough with a few Gaki to eliminate but eventually, a massive boss-like Gozuki appears. You could deal with it or run away…the latter is pretty much needed since it slaughters you almost instantly. Things only get slightly easier from there as you venture to the Yokai realm with all of its hazards, face off against various other Yokai and humans, and finally battle a Mezuki (which is far from a pushover).

Just when you thought these fights was over, these bosses unveil other new forms.

What’s worse than a boss that doesn’t know when to quit? How about a boss that doesn’t know when to quit and then changes forms, gaining new attacks in the process? It could be one phase after another or throughout different parts of the game but these 15 transforming bosses made life rough.

Dracula – Castlevania 3

Shapeshifting has always been Dracula’s thing, at least in the Castlevania games, and Castlevania 3 is no exception. Starting out in typical teleporting, fire column-summoning fashion, Dracula eventually transforms into a multi-headed thing that floats around spewing gunk. The final phase is a doozy as he transforms into a large winged beast that fires lasers. Certain sections of the floor disappear and act as floating platforms which you must hop on to hit Dracula in the head and win.

Nintendo's hybrid console is almost two years old and already boasts an awesome line-up.

The Nintendo Switch launched on March 3rd 2017 and has amassed an impressive range of titles despite its short life-cycle. Top-notch exclusives, indie titles, Wii U ports or third party titles that are incredible to play on the go – here are 30 Switch games that you have to play.

Owlboy

D-Pad Studio’s Owlboy first released in 2016 following years and years of development. Its charming art-style and believable characterization meshed well with the quasi-Metroidvania platforming it had to offer. Playing as Otis and flying through the skies to battle pirates and learn the truth about the world may not have been revolutionary but it’s utterly amazing adventure all the same.

The classic SHMUP is finally heading to Nintendo's hybrid platform.

Treasure’s cult classic shoot ’em up Ikaruga is coming to the Nintendo Switch on May 29th. Publisher Nicalis confirmed as much today, and also revealed that it can be played with vertical scrolling. This means removing the Joy-Con controllers and positioning the Switch screen in a vertical fashion.

If you’ve ever wanted that authentic arcade experience, then this is pretty close to the real thing (horizontal support is still present). The Switch version will also have all five stages, local co-op play and three difficulty settings. Arcade and Prototype modes will also be included.

Interestingly enough, a ratings board leak revealed that Ikaruga could be heading to the PlayStation 4 as well. When it will arrive isn’t known so stay tuned for more information. Ikaruga on the Switch will be available digitally through the Nintendo eShop for $15. If you’re really keen on trying the game out, then Ikaruga is also available on Steam for $9.99.

Treasure Games’ Ikaruga has appeared on Steam Greenlight and can be voted for in order to make it to Steam Store. If you haven’t heard of it, then it’s one of the better shoot ’em ups of the previous generation. Having released on the Dreamcast and then for the Nintendo GameCube before making its way Xbox Live Arcade and eventually Android earlier this year. Now you can have it on PC, if you vote now.

Ikaruga may seem like a relatively simple SHMUP, but it’s much more difficult than it seems. You can flip between black and white states to bounce back black and white bullets. You’ll need to play it yourself to see just how it plays out. The Steam version will include gamepad support and two player co-op along with two-player local play using a single controller. Other than that, it’s Ikaruga as you remember it.

Head here to vote for Ikaruga on Steam Greenlight.
