So don't expect it at the May 21st reveal for Microsoft's next gen console.

Microsoft recently unveiled Illuiroom, its “ultra-wide field of view device” that sits “on the user’s coffee table, projecting over a large area surrounding the television” and which would be connected wirelessly to the a next gen console as another display.

And while it announced intentions to fully integrate the technology into its next generation console, allowing for new games to be built from the ground up, don’t expect it to pop up during the May 21st reveal of the next Xbox.

Speaking to Engadget at CHI 2013, Microsoft Research’s Hrvoje Benko and Brett Jones stated that while Illumiroom is working quite well at present, its not ready to demo to the public until July, when they will showcase it at Siggraph.

Given that it runs using Kinect, it’s wholly possible that the device retails separately until Microsoft is able to fully integrate it into the Xbox 720. Well, at least we know what to not expect on May 21st when the company takes the wraps off of its next gen console.

Microsoft wants to ideally integrate it into a next generation console, and design new games.

Microsoft has released a new video for its experimental projector called Illumiroom. The software giant, and manufacturer of the Xbox 360 console describes it as an “ultra-wide field of view device sitting on the user’s coffee table, projecting over a large area surrounding the television. The device would be connected wirelessly to a next generation gaming console as a secondary display.”

What this means, is that you can extend your display beyond what is seen on the normal TV screen. Using Kinect to extend the field of view, as well as projecting images like light sources and particle effects, Illumiroom tries to create the illusion of the world outside of the confines of the display.

Showing off the technology at the CHI 2013 conference in Paris, Microsoft published a paper that said, they ideally want Illumiroom “to be directly integrated into a next generation console and new games would be designed for IllumiRoom from the ground up.”

This is interesting, considering Microsoft will be revealing the next Xbox on May 21st. Maybe Illumiroom will be a future upgrade. For now, the road to E3 2013 just got even more exciting.

Looks cool, doesn't it?

You need a projector and a Kinect sensor to transform your room or at least the space behind your TV into vivid imagery to engross you more into the content you consume. How exactly will that happen? Well Microsoft has shown a demonstration where such a thing is completely possible.

So what is Illumiroom exactly? Well as the name suggests it illuminates your room, duh.

“Our system uses the appearance and the geometry of the room (captured by Kinect) to adapt the projected visuals in real-time without any need to custom pre-process the graphics,” the reasearch team said.

“IllumiRoom is a proof-of-concept Microsoft Research project designed to push the boundary of living room immersive entertainment by blending our virtual and physical worlds with projected visualizations. The effects in the video are rendered in real time and are captured live — not special effects added in post processing,” the official description reads.

IllumiRoom project was designed by: Brett Jones, Hrvoje Benko, Eyal Ofek and Andy Wilson.
