The story expansion launches on September 4th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, and sees Indy investigating seemingly undead enemies.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s first story expansion, The Order of Giants, received some new gameplay at Gamescom Opening Night Live. As the archaeologist ventures into the depths of Rome, he encounters the Cult of Mithras and even what seems to be undead enemies. Check it out below.

All of this seemingly culminates in a giant Colosseum where a spear-wielding enemy readies to fight. Fans can still expect plenty of puzzle-solving, exploration, and platforming en route to solving this new mystery. Best of all, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, alongside the expansion, will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.

As for The Order of Giants, it’s out on September 4th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Check out our review for the PS5 version, released this past April, here. Alongside the DLC, PC players can look forward to RTX Hair support in September, which brings even more fidelity to Indy’s hair.
The enhanced hair rendering technology will be released alongside the upcoming The Order of Giants expansion early next month.

Developer MachineGames, along with Nvidia, has announced that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be getting support for Nvidia RTX Hair when the expansion for the title – The Order of Giants – comes out on September 4. When the expansion is out, PC players running the title on an Nvidia graphics card will see key characters throughout the game with improved hair effects.

According to Nvidia, RTX Hair will make use of strand-based hair techniques to render hair effects in games. Through this technology, developers can make hair that looks more geometrically detailed. This hair will also interact with the in-game lighting in more realistic ways, complete with realistic light and shadows.

To achieve this high-computation technique, Nvidia makes use of Linear-Swept Spheres primitives, which allows the game engine to render the hair complete with path traced lighting in more performant ways.

It is worth noting that, since RTX Hair needs an Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series graphics cards, the enhanced hair won’t be available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game. Rather, it will be exclusive to the PC version, and even then only for players that are running on a current-gen Nvidia graphics card.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle – The Order of the Giants was announced back in June during an Xbox Games Showcase. The expansion will take protagonist Indiana Jones to underground catacombs beneath Rome in a quest to “uncover the dark legacy of the Nephilim giants.” The DLC was announced with a trailer.

Back in July, design director Jens Andersson spoke about why MachineGames opted to go with a first-person perspective for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. In a talk at Develop:Brighton, Andersson said that going with a first-person camera for the game “was a given” for the studio.

“If you’re going to be Indiana Jones, you need to look through his eyes, you need to feel like him,” he said.

“How would we make you as a first-person player feel like Indiana Jones? We knew that would be really hard, but actually it was one of the things that we felt we hit,” he said. “It took years, of course, but it wasn’t the hardest part making this game. It was a lot of the other things that I would highlight as ‘we didn’t get this right until at the very end.’”

Interestingly, MachineGames has a history of telling narratively-rich stories in single-player games while never leaving the first-person camera angle. This could be seen in the studio’s Wolfenstein titles – The New Order from 2014 and The New Colossus from 2017. Even the VR-only Wolfenstein spin-off Cyberpilot, as well as co-op spin-off Youngblood never left the first-person camera behind.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was originally released on PC and Xbox Series X/S, ultimately making its way to PS5 back in April. The title quickly became quite successful on Sony’s console, with reports indicating that it was on track to be one of the fastest-selling releases of all versions of the game, with around 117.2 thousand copies sold in its first week.

Attendees can also play Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, Invincible VS, and more at the Xbox booth.

The excitement of players, at least those attending Gamescom 2025, going hands-on with Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight: Silksong is palpable. However, it’s only one of 20 titles that Xbox is bringing to the trade show. According to Xbox Wire, playable demos for Team Ninja’s Ninja Gaiden 4 and Obsidian’s Grounded 2 (which enters early access tomorrow) will also be available.

The third-party line-up is even more jam-packed with Borderlands 4, EA Sports FC 26, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Cronos: The New Dawn, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Aniimo, There Are No Ghosts at the Grand, PowerWash Simulator 2, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, Invincible VS, Super Meat Boy 3D, Cronos: The New Dawn and Mistfall Hunter also playable. You can even go hands-on with Final Fantasy 16, which has been out for months on Xbox Series X/S.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s The Order of Giants DLC will also receive new details, though only the base game is seemingly playable on the show floor. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is also due to debut a new city update and aircraft. Other existing titles that attendees can experience include Age of Mythology: Retold and Age of Empires.

For those who can’t attend, Xbox is hosting its Gamescom 2025 broadcast on August 20th and 21st at 6 AM PT. The former includes the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, Grounded 2, Keeper, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 (which will have a reveal at Opening Night Live), and more.
Design director Jens Andersson also noted that it was "really hard", but it wasn't the most difficult part of making the game.

Developer MachineGames has confirmed that its action adventure title Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was always envisioned as a first-person game. According to GamesRadar, design director Jens Andersson spoke about the decision to make the game first-person at a talk at Develop:Brighton. It “was a given for us,” said Andersson, who continued, “there was no choice for us, we love that perspective. It’s a great way of telling stories.”

“If you’re going to be Indiana Jones, you need to look through his eyes, you need to feel like him,” he said.

Andersson went on to explain how the studio could tap into making players feel like Indiana Jones further in the talk. He also described it as a difficult challenge when the studio was making Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. However, he also clarified that it wasn’t the hardest part.

“How would we make you as a first-person player feel like Indiana Jones? We knew that would be really hard, but actually it was one of the things that we felt we hit,” he said. “It took years, of course, but it wasn’t the hardest part making this game. It was a lot of the other things that I would highlight as ‘we didn’t get this right until at the very end.'”

Going by Andersson’s words, it might just come down to the fact that MachineGames has traditionally preferred telling stories through a first-person perspective. We also saw the studio explore this similarly in its take on the Wolfenstein franchise, all the way from Wolfenstein: The New Order back in 2014, to 2017’s Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. We even saw this in Wolfenstein spin-offs like Youngblood and the VR-only Cyberpilot, both of which were developed by MachineGames alongside Arkane Lyon.

In an interview leading up to the PS5 release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer had also spoken about MachineGames’ decision to make the title a first-person game. He noted that there was some pushback on the studio to make it third-person. However, ultimately, he praised the studio for sticking to its guns, and noted that Microsoft wants to continue giving studios the means to tell their own stories through their own games.

“I was really inspired by MachineGames taking someone else’s IP and doing something so unique, and I’m inspired about what that team can do next,” he said. “Certain people were kind of pushing them on the first person versus third person. And I think once you play it, you realize you are Indy. But going forward, I also want to give the teams the ability to do our own games and our own franchises. We have a lot of room to tell new stories, as well. And I want to make sure that’s an option for us.”

MachineGames is currently working on a post-launch expansion for the title, dubbed The Order of Giants. The expansion is slated for release in September, and will be available at the same time across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. As part of the expansion, players will once more step into the shoes of Indiana Jones as they head to Rome and explore its underground catacombs.
