Patrick Bach talks form versus function, and keeping visual elements that make the game unique.

DICE’s Patrick Bach spoke about the importance of form over function, practical gameplay over pretty visuals following the reveal of the single-player campaign at this year’s GDC. It is interesting to know whether the frame rate has been improved for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions or if 30 frames per second would be the norm again.

Bach replied that, “Frostbite 3 engine is not only about high-end. It’s also about workflows. So it’s easier for us to optimize and create better experiences on consoles, due to the fact we’re pushing the bar and simplifying and creating easier ways for the developers to build the games in general.

“30 or 60 frames per second on consoles is a discussion on fidelity, still. What is most important right now? Are you willing to cut down on features to get it to run? If you remove destruction and vehicles of course we could increase the frame-rate.

“But that’s a core part of the game experience. We still have 24 players on the Xbox 360 and the PS3, which still is a high number compared to other games. There aren’t that many shooters with a higher number, and those games don’t have destruction and vehicles”, he said in a recent interview with EG.

“It’s a balance. I would never sacrifice the core Battlefield experience to get higher frame-rate. But then again, higher frame-rate is something positive. So, we’ll see what happens.”

Currently, Battlefield 4 is slated to release this Fall for PC while console availability, whether current gen or next gen or both, is yet to be specified.

You can check out more of Battlefield 4 over here. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

President Satoru Iwata had quite a task ahead at Nintendo’s 72nd annual general meeting. This being a chance to address the share-holders, he enunciated on the penetration of the Nintendo 3DS and the nature of the Wii U’s innovation.

According to Iwata, even though it’s been slower to take in Western countries, the Nintendo 3DS has seen great success in Japan.

While the Nintendo 3DS has a certain degree of sales momentum in Japan, the momentum in the US and Europe is currently weak. To be more specific, sales of the Nintendo 3DS are constant in Japan…After the beginning of this calendar year, the average unit sales have been 83,000 units on a weekly basis. This means that about 55% of all gaming hardware sales in Japan consist of the Nintendo 3DS.

On the Wii U, Iwata simply stated:

We would like to create a future so even family members who have never touched any video game systems will consider the Wii U something that is convenient to use so that we can maintain its competitiveness for a long time.

Skeptics still remain, but Nintendo stands firm on it’s future.

According to Sony, even though the Playstation 3 was never actually profitable for them, it seems like it actually makes money for them today.

Shuhei Yoshida, Sony’s president of Worldwide studios has revealed during a recent interview that, “this year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the Playstation 3”

“We aren’t making huge money from hardware, but we aren’t bleeding like we used to” he added.

This all makes sense since Sony’s release of the Slim model, and the recent smaller graphics chip that they put in their consoles.

“When we bring the cost of hardware down, we are looking at opportunities to adjust prices if we believe that will increase demand,” he explained. “At the moment, we are trying to catch up our production.”

“We have lots of great games coming out and innovations with Move and 3DTV, so we don’t believe this is the time for us to think about a price drop,” he said.

Apple has just responded to the many bad feed backs about the iPhone 4 signal problems, saying that its due to the fact that your not holding it correctly.

Just like the older iPhone, there is a a metal band in the back that is both a 3G and wi-fi receiver, and the same goes for the new iPhone, so if you hold it and touch both parts of the antenna, it severely reduces the signal, and maybe even drop your calls.

“Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas,” they said.

“This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”

If you want to avoid this issue, just simply don’t hold your iPhone that way, or you can also buy a case that stops the skin contact with that certain part of the phone.

According to Microsoft, they claim that the 360 can match the PS3’s 3D capabilities.

They said that the Xbox is ready for 3D, but for them it’s too early, they want to wait until people actually have 3D TV’s.

During an interview with CVG, a Microsoft exec was asked if they were concerned about the fact that Sony started with 3D before them, the Microsoft exec replied by saying, “I’m not. We have 3D games – obviously the Avatar game came out last year – and the console fully supports 3D. But for us right now, we’re more on the 3D input take, you know, revolutionising things with Kinect.”

“We’re going to take more of an attitude of seeing what the adoption looks like. Right now, there’s nothing technically that we can’t do on the 3D side – we already have games out there today. ” he said

“For us, it’s more going to be let’s see what the consumers say. Let’s see what happens on the TV side and the sell-through side. It’s something I think we’re going to follow on, and that we’re fine to follow on.” he added.

He was later on asked if the 360 can match the PS3’s 3D capabilities, he replied by saying, “Yeah, that’s true,” he said, “I think that when we decide we want to jump into 3D it’ll be because the consumer’s voted. But from a technical side, there’s nothing about it we can’t do. In fact, we’re already doing it today.”

3D gaming is already starting to grow today on the PS3, and more and more games will support it as well, but I don’t think it matters right now, not many people own 3D TV’s.

Although the new CECH-2100A SKU hasn’t been formally announced by Sony, there’s sayings that Sony updated the Playstation’s Hardware by changing the RSX for a cheaper one, which uses 15% less power, and is less likely to be affected by the YLOD.

According to Engadget, the new RSX is 40nm compared to the older 65nm, and it uses two 128Mb XDR RAM chips instead of the four 64Mb version.

Perhaps Sony planned to announce this at E3? i doubt it, but expect an official word on this very soon.
